The Battle Arena Toshinden OVA (Original Video Animation) is a two-part series released in 1996, based on the popular 3D fighting game by Takara. Directed by Masami Ōbari, the anime adaptation follows the story of Eiji Shinjo, a master swordsman haunted by his interrupted battle against the mysterious Gaia during the previous year's secret martial arts tournament, which was disrupted by an enigmatic organization. A year later, Eiji and other participants find themselves targeted by a powerful foe, forcing them to band together to uncover the true identity of this new adversary who bears a striking resemblance to Eiji’s long-lost brother, Sho.

The OVA is characterized by martial arts action, showcasing intense battles with energy-based attacks reminiscent of the original game’s style. However, the series has been criticized for its lack of cohesive storytelling and poor character development, assuming viewers are already familiar with the source material. The visuals and voice acting, particularly in the English dub, have also been noted for their lack of quality compared to other contemporary anime.

While some fans of the original game may appreciate seeing characters like Eiji and Gaia brought to life, general reviews highlight its shortcomings in animation, plot coherence, and overall execution, making it less appealing outside of nostalgic or camp value. The series was available in both edited and uncut versions in North America, with the uncut version showcasing more mature content, such as scenes involving blood and brief suggestive imagery.
