There’s a growing optimism amongst Liberals that they can win back federal seats in Western Australia at the next election, as a key step to regaining government. Former prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott have joined opposition leader Peter Dutton in travelling west to add heavyweight support to both their federal and state teams.

00:00heralding the new guard with a touch of the old.
00:05Nice day, typical Western Australian weather.
00:08Welcome to Bullwinkle.
00:10Hi, hello.
00:11A standing ovation in the new seat of Bullwinkle
00:14for Australia's second longest serving Prime Minister.
00:16I'm here of course to try and influence the Australians who live here
00:21to vote for Matt.
00:23Matt is a genuine local.
00:25Liberal candidate Matt Moran needs to beat not only the Labor candidate
00:29but also former State Nationals leader Mia Davies in the critical seat.
00:34Because as Mr Dutton said, if we don't win Bullwinkle, we don't win government.
00:38From the Perth Hills to the start of the Wheatbelt,
00:41the new electorate of Bullwinkle is notionally Labor.
00:43But the Liberals hope the star power of former Prime Minister John Howard
00:47will lift the profile of their candidate Matt Moran
00:50and help get him over the line.
00:52John Howard was Prime Minister a long time ago.
00:55I don't think...
00:57If he's the answer for the Liberals when it comes to any election outcome,
01:02they're asking the wrong question.
01:04The Liberals aiming to win back the four WA federal seats they lost in 2022.
01:09The odds are against it, but gee, they're changing.
01:13They're changing almost on a daily basis.
01:16An even tougher challenge for the Liberals at the state level
01:19after being almost wiped out at the last WA election.
01:22It is climbing Mount Everest to try and win back, but it can be done.
01:29We absolutely can win it. We're focused on the right priorities.
01:33Banking on the tide turning,
01:35just as it did for the Liberals in the recent Queensland election.
01:38The public will punish a bad government.
01:40They did it in Queensland.
01:42I think they'll do it at the federal election as well.
01:44Unlikely to be the last time Liberal heavyweights hit the campaign trail in WA.
