Sweltering conditions on the streets of Katherine, residents taking this week's heatwave in their stride. “It’s a beautiful hot day but I don't care” “It’s getting to the stage you can just drop from the heat from a couple of steps you know?” “It can get a lot hotter but you know we've seen 40 or 42, you know like c'mon, it’s just not that bad” “We could see some showers and storms across the Top End. As we go into the weekend unfortunately, we're going to see those really decrease, maybe a little bit around the coast, but they're going to be few and far between. With the showers decreasing we are going to see those temperatures rise again” Meanwhile emergency services are attempting to control a number of blazes, including a large fire burning for the past two weeks near Wycliffe Well. The scars of a devastating season last year providing some fire breaks, but the risk remaining for much of Central Australia “Any area that wasn't affected last year is an area of concern, and generally we're seeing the fire season continue to progress South and obviously now going to be impacting, as it has the last couple of weeks, in and around the Central Australia area.” Severe heatwaves are particularly dangerous for older people and children, and libraries in Darwin are offering a number of activities where young and old can escape the heat.
