00:00With record attendance and record sponsorship, the 2023-2024 season was a banner year for the NBA, producing some $13 billion in league-wide revenue.
00:12But that number is about to make a major leap, part of a relentless financial climb that is sending the value of the league's 30 franchises skyward.
00:21NBA teams are now worth an average of $4.4 billion, up 15% from last year.
00:29No team would sell for less than $3 billion, according to Forbes estimates, and three clubs are worth at least $7 billion, the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
00:43Only five other teams in any sport currently reach that lofty threshold.
00:49Investors' appetite to buy into basketball starts with the new media deals the NBA signed this summer for a reported $76 billion over 11 years, or an average annual value of $6.9 billion.
01:05The contracts begin next season and will offer a roughly $4 billion annual raise over the current agreements.
01:13Another source of optimism around NBA teams? New or upgraded sports arenas.
01:19After 25 years sharing Crypto.com Arena with the Lakers in downtown Los Angeles, the Clippers are settling into their new $2 billion home, the Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
01:31That should come with a massive surge in premium seating and sponsorship revenue.
01:37Meanwhile, the Toronto Raptors' Scotiabank Arena is in the midst of a $350 million renovation, and Oklahoma City has approved more than $800 million in funding toward a new home for the funder.
01:51And Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., recently unveiled the financing agreement for the redevelopment of the Wizards' Capital One Arena.
02:01Here are the five most valuable NBA teams for 2024.
02:075. Los Angeles Clippers
02:13Intuit is paying a reported $500 million over 23 years for the naming rights to the Clippers' new arena.
02:21That $21.7 million annual average is more than $7 million beyond what any other NBA team collected for arena naming rights last season, according to Forbes estimates.
02:344. Boston Celtics
02:39The Celtics' lead owner, Wick Grousbeck, is hoping to remain in control until 2028, even as he looks to sell the team.
02:48Sports bankers agree that the setup could mean the bidding starts at a little over $5 billion.
02:54Ultimately, though, many in the industry think the sale price will come in at $6 billion or even higher.
03:013. Los Angeles Lakers
03:06The Lakers made a bit of league history in their season opener when LeBron James took the court with Bronny James, a second-round draft pick this year.
03:15They are the NBA's first father-son duo to play together.
03:202. New York Knicks
03:26James Dolan was one of the few public critics of the NBA's new media deals, calling out the league's shift towards a more centralized model that de-emphasizes the local market.
03:37That makes sense for the owner of the Knicks, who contributed a league-high $45 million towards revenue sharing last season, according to Forbes estimates.
03:471. Golden State Warriors
03:52The Warriors lead the ranking for the third straight year after hauling in an estimated $800 million in revenue last season.
04:00Only four other sports teams in the world have reached that milestone, the Dallas Cowboys, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Barcelona.
