00:00What's up everybody, Griffy here.
00:02Got a taste for terror?
00:03Can't get enough of things that go bump in the night?
00:05Fear not, Shudder's got you covered
00:08with these upcoming original movies.
00:11Ever since Late Night with the Devil shattered expectations
00:14at the box office, IFC Films and Shudder
00:16have been releasing new horror films
00:18into theaters on a near monthly basis.
00:21Oddity, Skin Care, and Azrael all immediately launched
00:24into wide release in the six months after Devil,
00:27while Getaway currently stands as IFC
00:30and Shudder's final theatrical release for 2024.
00:33And there are already plans to keep this hot streak alive
00:36as 2025 rolls around.
00:38Grafted, a horror film about a skin grafting operation
00:41gone wrong, is set for a January 24th, 2025
00:45theatrical launch.
00:47Hailing from indie filmmaker Sasha Rainbow,
00:49several news outlets have already begun comparing
00:51Grafted to another indie horror flick,
00:542024's The Substance.
00:56So, will Shudder's first big screen title of 2025
00:59emerge from the shadow of the previous year's body horror hit?
01:02For now, that remains to be seen.
01:05Nothing screams nightmare like a family vacation,
01:08and nobody knows that better than the family
01:10at the heart of Getaway.
01:12This upcoming film sees its lead characters
01:14embark on a journey to a remote Swedish island
01:17that just so happens to be the home
01:19of a prolific serial killer.
01:21Getaway comes courtesy of director Stefan Harz
01:24and writer Nick Frost, who also stars in the film.
01:27Previously, Frost's only credit as a feature writer
01:30was on 2011's so-so sci-fi flick Paul.
01:33So, Getaway sees the Shaun of the Dead star
01:35venturing into relatively new creative territory.
01:39How's that for a slice of fried gold?
01:41Yeah, boy!
01:43And while it's hard to say whether or not
01:45the movie will live up to the promise of past horror
01:47comedies anchored by Frost, diehard horror fans
01:50won't have to wait long to find out.
01:52Shudder has set an early December domestic theatrical
01:55release for the movie just in time for the holidays.
01:58A historic first-time collaboration
02:00between Guatemalan and American studios,
02:03Rita follows a 13-year-old girl who,
02:05in an attempt to escape from her abusive father,
02:08winds up in an institution populated by fantasy creatures.
02:12These inhabitants are attempting to defeat
02:14the nefarious forces that rule the world,
02:17and Rita lies at the heart of their plans.
02:19Rita reportedly dovetails real-life horrors
02:21with the tears of classic fantasy literature.
02:24It's a bold concept involving children in peril
02:26that won't be for everyone,
02:28but these provocative qualities could also make Rita
02:31stand out among the new horror movies coming in late 2024.
02:35It's also commendable that Shudder is making
02:38its big Thanksgiving original horror movie
02:40an international title from a filmmaker
02:42unknown to domestic audiences,
02:44rather than a movie tied into a preexisting franchise.
02:47With Rita, the streamer is demonstrating
02:49that there will always be room for ambition and creativity
02:53on its tentpole release slate.
02:55It's probably fair to say that Shudder
02:57isn't really big on franchises.
02:59Given that it specializes in artsy
03:01festival-acquisition titles such as
03:03Skin of Merink and Saloom,
03:05it's not often that sequels, prequels, or spinoffs
03:08wind up on the streamer's original release slate.
03:11But one exception to this emerged in 2024,
03:14when In a Violent Nature, a Sundance feature
03:17acquired by IFC Films slash Shudder,
03:19became a decent box office performer at the end of May.
03:22In the wake of the film's success,
03:24Shudder announced at 2024's San Diego Comic-Con
03:27that In a Violent Nature 2 was on the way.
03:30Picking this feature for the franchise treatment
03:32makes sense, too.
03:33Violent Nature killer Johnny is very much a slasher foe
03:36in the vein of Jason, Michael Myers, Chucky,
03:39and countless other iconic horror franchise villains.
03:42And his potential arguably reaches far beyond that
03:46of a one-and-done movie appearance.
03:48Whether it's the ventriloquist Dummy in Magic,
03:51possessed Chucky toys, or the childlike robot in Megan,
03:54dolls in horror movies are a match made in hell.
03:58You should probably run.
03:59The Rule of Ginny Pin, an upcoming indie feature
04:02written and directed by James Ashcroft,
04:04is set to continue that tradition.
04:07Geoffrey Rush stars as a partially paralyzed
04:09retirement home resident who discovers
04:11that a fellow resident, played by John Lithgow,
04:14has been using a dementia therapy doll
04:16for malicious purposes.
04:18It's a kooky-sounding premise, sure,
04:19like a cross between Rear Window and Goosebumps'
04:22Night of the Living Dummy,
04:23but that combo could prove irresistible to horror fans.
04:27Shudder picked up the distribution rights
04:29to The Rule of Ginny Pin just before its premiere
04:32at 2024's Fantastic Fest.
04:34No concrete theatrical release date
04:36has been announced for the film yet,
04:38but you can bet that Shudder plans
04:40on giving this high-profile project
04:42a launch worthy of its A-list stars.
04:46Much like dolls, Satan is a go-to baddie
04:48in plenty of horror movies,
04:50and Old Beelzebub made one hell of a splash
04:52in the 2017 Indonesian fright-fest Satan's Slaves,
04:56a remake of a classic 1980 Indonesian horror film
05:00of the same name.
05:01Forget the original, though.
05:03By the time Satan's Slaves 2 Communion came out,
05:05this franchise had taken on a life of its own.
05:08No wonder Shudder snapped up the distribution rights
05:11to the follow-up across multiple major territories.
05:14Few horror franchises end after the second installment,
05:17and as Communion hit theaters in Indonesia,
05:19director Joko Anwar became well aware
05:22of the potential of future Satan's Slaves stories.
05:25In fact, he openly discussed plans
05:27to direct a third Satan's Slaves feature
05:29if the second one did well.
05:31Given the enormous success of Communion,
05:33a threequel now looks inevitable.
05:36While no concrete information
05:37on the third modern Satan's Slaves movie has come to light,
05:40this lucrative brand name surely won't lay dormant for long,
05:45and when it does come back,
05:45it's bound to reaffirm Satan's indomitable presence
05:48in the world of horror cinema.
05:51After bringing the Irish horror movie Oddity
05:53to movie theaters everywhere in July 2024,
05:56Shudder plans to once again turn to the Emerald Isle
05:59for one of its 2025 horror titles.
06:02The streamer has recently acquired distribution rights
06:04to Frewaka after its successful film festival run.
06:08Notably, Frewaka will also join the growing list
06:11of movies released in the 2020s
06:13that are told largely in Gaelic, Ireland's native language.
06:17The movie follows a woman who,
06:18while struggling to deal with a personal tragedy,
06:20finds herself face-to-face
06:22with mythical Irish beings known as Nashi.
06:25It also doesn't hurt that the movie hails
06:27from director Aisling Clarke,
06:29who garnered largely positive reviews
06:30for her 2018 feature The Devil's Doorway.
06:35Do you see her?
06:37Thomas?
06:39With a mix of horror and fantasy,
06:41there's a lot to be excited about
06:42when it comes to Frewaka,
06:44which is set to terrorize Shudder subscribers
06:46sometime in 2025.
06:49Normally, Shudder purchases the domestic rights
06:51to titles after their film festival premieres.
06:54Some of the best movies on Shudder
06:56have followed this process,
06:57including recent hits like Late Night with the Devil
07:00and In a Violent Nature,
07:01both of which were finished long before Shudder
07:04picked up their distribution rights.
07:05But the company's penchant
07:07for acquiring completed motion pictures
07:09was upended with the acquisition of The Cycle,
07:12months before it began shooting.
07:14Starring Escape Room's Deborah Ann Wohl,
07:16as a woman who unearths horrific truths
07:18about her late father's past,
07:20The Cycle's unorthodox acquisition suggests
07:23that Shudder is now getting in
07:24on the ground floor of horror titles
07:27based on concept alone,
07:28rather than festival hype.
07:30If all goes well,
07:31this could be the kind of star-driven horror flick
07:34that continues Shudder's recent hot streak.
07:36And it could forever change the way
07:38that the streamer acquires its movies.
07:41Director Randall Okito
07:42makes his feature debut with Menace,
07:45the tale of a psychologically tormented young lady
07:47who relocates to a small town
07:50where people begin disappearing.
07:52No release date has yet been confirmed
07:54for this sci-fi horror hybrid,
07:56which stars 1883's Isabel May in the lead role.
08:00The movie's genre-bending premise
08:02makes it an interesting departure
08:04from Shudder's other releases,
08:05which typically focus on either supernatural scares
08:08or slasher baddies.
08:11Notably, Menace hasn't been screened
08:12at any film festivals to date.
08:14Shudder acquired the movie back in May 2024,
08:17but all we currently know for sure
08:19is that it will almost certainly be coming in 2025.
08:23Will it pave the road for a boom
08:24in sci-fi features at Shudder?
08:26Only time will tell.
