00:00I'm the only survivor.
00:02Welcome to Spanish Watchmojo.
00:04Today we will show you 20 people who survived the attacks of some of the most famous murderers in the world.
00:12At the beginning, I did think I was going to die.
00:15Danette Wilt survived Christopher Wyler.
00:18Known as Beauty Queen Killer,
00:23she embarked on a deadly journey through the United States in early 1984.
00:29Kidnapping at least 12 women and killing 8 of them.
00:34Wyler finally made it to the list of the 10 most wanted by the FBI.
00:39And it was while she was in it when she kidnapped Danette Wilt.
00:43When they reached his car, Wyler drew his pistol and forced Danette to get in.
00:47Wilt was in the South Lake and Maryville, Indiana shopping center
00:52when she was kidnapped by Wyler and sexually assaulted.
00:56After arriving in New York, Wyler took Wilt to a remote area.
01:01He stabbed her twice and killed her.
01:10Fortunately, Wilt was ingenious and survived the attack.
01:14She finally got to the highway and asked a truck driver for help,
01:18who took her to a nearby hospital.
01:21And she survived after receiving surgery that saved her life.
01:27The FBI now pinned Wyler in the Northeast,
01:30still driving the Mercury Cougar he had stolen from Terry Walden.
01:34Felicity Nightingale
01:36Fred West survived.
01:38Fred West, one of the most notorious serial killers in England,
01:43killed at least 12 women, including his own daughter, Heather.
01:48You can see that they slowly but surely crafted this
01:52into a refined, scavenging, predatory, stalking, family sort of unit
01:59that could, as it were, take people off the streets very, very efficiently.
02:07In April 1980, after West had already killed most of his victims,
02:13he picked up a woman named Felicity Nightingale.
02:16After making fun of her for asking for a bento,
02:20West invited her to spend the night with his family,
02:23claiming that it would soon get dark.
02:25Fortunately, she refused, but her defensive behavior made West angry.
02:31Despite his explosive temperament, he finally let Felicity out of the car
02:36and she returned home through other means.
02:39Later, when reading about West's crimes in the newspaper,
02:43he realized that he was the man he had met on the road so many years ago.
03:05Cindy Paulson
03:06Robert Hansen
03:09It is believed that Robert Hansen kidnapped women,
03:12took them to the Alaskan desert, and married them with an automatic rifle.
03:17He killed at least 17 women during the 70s and early 80s,
03:23but was eventually captured thanks to Cindy Paulson's efforts.
03:28We found her in handcuffs with very little clothes on.
03:32She was real credible. She was very scared, she was very frightened,
03:36and she told us her story.
03:38Robert had kidnapped Cindy and claimed that he was taking her to his remote cabin,
03:43presumably to hunt her and kill her.
03:46But while Robert was distracted loading his plane with supplies,
03:51Cindy escaped and ran, finally reaching the safety of a passing truck.
03:57She was later questioned by the police and testified against Robert.
04:02With his testimony, the police were able to obtain a court order
04:06and register Robert's property, which eventually led to his arrest.
04:22Dennis Nilsen survived.
04:25Scottish murderer Dennis Nilsen was active between 1978 and 1983,
04:32killing between 12 and 15 young people.
04:35In May 1982, he picked up 21-year-old Carl Stotter at a Camden pub.
04:42But when he crossed paths with Nilsen in May 1982, Nilsen had already murdered 13 young men.
04:48And in fact, Carl would be one of the few to make it out of his flat alive.
04:52Nilsen took Stotter home, where he passed out.
04:56When he woke up, he was drowning in the bathtub.
04:59But Stotter survived and Nilsen took care of him until he recovered.
05:03Nilsen told Stotter that he had suffocated in his sleeping bag
05:08and that he put him in the bathtub to resurrect him.
05:11Then he took Stotter to the train station and just let him go.
05:23Later, after Nilsen was convicted, Stotter asked him why he had let him go.
05:29Nilsen simply replied,
05:31What happened between us was a fine thread of humanity.
05:35Christopher Bryson survived Robert Berdella.
05:39On March 29, 1988, Robert Berdella of Kansas City
05:44kidnapped a 22-year-old man named Christopher Bryson.
05:53And he offers him a beer and they drive around in his car for a while.
05:58Berdella then says, well, come back to my house and you can have a beer there.
06:01So Christopher agrees and they go back.
06:04At that time, Berdella had already killed at least six young people.
06:09Bryson was taken to Berdella's house, tied to a bed
06:13and subjected to sexual abuse for several days.
06:16After four days in captivity,
06:18Bryson was released while Berdella was at work
06:22and fled the house, calling the attention of a nearby man who called the police.
06:27Bryson was rescued and a warrant was issued for Berdella's house.
06:32Unknown to the police, they were about to uncover the shocking crimes
06:37committed by a sadistic serial killer, Robert Berdella.
06:42And with that, his wave of crimes finally came to an end after four long years.
06:48Cynthia Vigilia survived David Parker Ray.
06:53David Parker Ray, who had terrorized the Southwest of the United States for many years,
06:59is also known as the killer of the toy box.
07:05He was a predator and he was a very good one, a very intelligent one.
07:10The name comes from his semi-revolt,
07:12within which Ray would carry out most of his atrocious crimes.
07:17Although Ray was never declared guilty of murder,
07:21it is suspected that he killed more than 60 people.
07:24Cynthia Vigilia was kidnapped by Ray and kept inside the toy box
07:30for three days before she was released and escaped.
07:34Her escape was noticed by Ray's accomplice, Cindy Handy, who chased her.
07:39A fight broke out and Vigilia managed to grab an ice pick and stab Handy in the neck.
07:46She grabbed her head as I just jumped.
07:48I dropped the phone and I jumped from the bed to the living room floor
07:51and just bolted out the door.
07:54For the first time in days, Cynthia is outside and free.
07:59Then she went to a nearby house and called the police,
08:03which caused the man to fall.
08:05Lisa McVeigh survived Bobby Joe Long.
08:09Sometimes people escape from murderers,
08:12other times murderers let them go.
08:15This is the case of the serial killer Bobby Joe Long and Lisa McVeigh,
08:20who would have been their ninth confirmed victim of murder.
08:24Bobby Joe Long killed at least 10 women in Tampa
08:27and on November 3, 1984, he tried adding one more to his macabre list.
08:33On November 3, 1984, Long kidnapped McVeigh while riding a bicycle
08:39and took her home, where he subjected her to sexual assault.
08:43But McVeigh managed to establish a bond with Long
08:46and convinced him to let her go.
08:48At one point, she told him she had to care for her sick father.
08:52Finally, after 26 hours, he dropped her off not far from where the ordeal began.
08:57Seeing her eyes, he took her to the forest and fled.
09:00McVeigh went home and called the police,
09:03who began to watch Long,
09:05which finally led to his arrest.
09:08McVeigh later became a police officer
09:11and was present when Long was executed in 2019.
09:15Jeffrey Rignall survived John Wayne Gacy
09:19Although some people physically survive their attackers,
09:24the pain never completely disappears.
09:27On March 21, 1978,
09:30Jeffrey Rignall, 26, was attacked by John Wayne Gacy.
09:41Who attracted Rignall to his car with the promise of a little marijuana.
09:46They applied chloroform to him and took him to Gacy's house,
09:50where he was subjected to horrible abuse.
09:52After a while, Rignall fell unconscious and woke up in Lincoln Park,
09:58after Gacy let him go.
10:00Gacy never explained why she let Rignall escape.
10:12Independently, the incident had a profound effect on Rignall,
10:17who soon suffered from depression,
10:19became withdrawn and lonely,
10:22and lost a lot of weight.
10:24He wrote some memoirs entitled 29 Below,
10:28before dying in 2000 at the age of 49.
10:32Carol D'Arange survived Ted Bundy
10:36Carol D'Arange was in a concentration camp
10:39Carol D'Arange was in a mall in Murray, Utah,
10:43when an officer approached her and told her
10:46that someone had tried to break into her car.
10:49A man approached me.
10:52He said he was a police officer.
10:55He said, well, we found someone trying to break into your car.
11:00He was polite.
11:02He asked me if I wanted to come out to the car with him
11:05and see if anything was missing.
11:07He offered to take her to the police station
11:09and file a report.
11:11She accepted, but when she told him
11:14that she was driving in the wrong direction,
11:16he stopped, attacked her and tried to handcuff her.
11:20She fought against his attacker and escaped,
11:23but then identified him in a police press wheel.
11:26It was Ted Bundy and he was sentenced to prison.
11:32Unfortunately, later he escaped
11:35and continued his infamous reign of murder.
11:38Another survivor of Bundy is Rhonda Stapley,
11:41a college student who was sexually assaulted
11:45before fleeing to nearby forests.
11:48Tracy Edwards survived Jeffrey Dahmer.
11:51If it weren't for Tracy Edwards,
11:54it is possible that they would never have caught Jeffrey Dahmer.
11:57On July 22, 1991, Dahmer called Edwards' attention
12:02and invited him to return to his apartment.
12:12While he was there, Dahmer showed a horrible behavior.
12:16He pointed at Edwards with a knife
12:18and said he was going to eat his heart.
12:20Edwards finally hit Dahmer in the face
12:23and ran out of the building,
12:25meeting police officers Robert Routh and Rolf Mueller nearby.
12:31They accompanied Edwards back to the apartment
12:34and immediately had evidence of Dahmer's crimes.
12:38After a brief struggle, Dahmer was handcuffed and arrested.
12:42His infamous number of deaths reached 17.
12:45Edwards told police about Dahmer ending Dahmer's killing spree.
12:49Former District Attorney Michael McCann says Edwards deserves the credit
12:52for finally exposing Dahmer and his crimes.
12:55Had that not happened, had Edwards himself been slain,
12:58no one could tell how many more people might have been killed.
13:01Holly Dawn survived Angel Resendiz.
13:04Resendiz was called the railroad killer,
13:08a man who claimed at least 15 lives throughout Mexico and the United States
13:12during the 1980s and 1990s.
13:17On August 29, 1997,
13:20Resendiz attacked both Christopher Mayer and his girlfriend,
13:24Holly Dawn, who were walking together on a train track.
13:28He tied them up and killed Mayer,
13:30dropping a large stone on his head.
13:33I got my hands untied, I held on to my belt behind my back
13:36so it looked like I was still tied up.
13:38He proceeded to stab Dawn in the neck with an ice pick,
13:41hit her on the head with a wooden board
13:44and sexually assault her.
13:46She managed to survive her wounds,
13:49becoming the only known victim of the railroad killer
13:53who managed to do it.
13:55Rose Stewart survived Dean Carter.
13:58In March 1984, Dean Carter murdered five women
14:03and was sentenced to death for his crimes.
14:06However, his first attempt at murder was unsuccessful.
14:10Rose Stewart, a woman whom Carter had known
14:14and with whom he had fallen in love,
14:16woke up and found him in his room,
14:18after which he left with her for five hours.
14:22However, Stewart pretended to enjoy his company.
14:26Due to the compassion she showed him,
14:28he let her live and she promised to call him later.
14:32Stewart quickly went to the authorities,
14:35but Carter was no longer there.
14:37Later, Stewart testified against Carter in court,
14:41which helped put him behind bars.
14:44Teresa Thornhill survived Robert Black.
14:48Throughout the 1980s,
14:51Robert Black kidnapped, assaulted and murdered
14:54numerous girls throughout the United Kingdom.
14:57Teenage Teresa Thornhill almost joined her list
15:01when Black kidnapped her on Nottingham Street.
15:04However, she managed to squeeze her navel during the fight,
15:08which in turn loosened her grip
15:10and allowed her to scream for help.
15:13Her boyfriend who was nearby heard the screams
15:15and ran to help her,
15:17which caused Black to get back in his car
15:20and drive away at full speed.
15:29Another two years passed before Black was arrested in Scotland.
15:33He was sentenced to life in prison where he died in 2016.
15:37Tali Shapiro survived Rodney Alcala.
15:41Nobody knows how many lives Rodney Alcala ended.
15:45Some say it could be 50,
15:48others say it could reach up to 130.
16:00Known as the killer of the dating game,
16:02because he appeared once in the game show
16:05before his crimes were known,
16:08he was sentenced to death in 2010 for 5 murders
16:11and received 25 additional years
16:14after being accused by two other people.
16:17It all started in 1968 with young Tali Shapiro,
16:21who she sexually assaulted and beat in her apartment.
16:25After responding to a 911 call,
16:28a police officer found Shapiro bleeding,
16:32but Alcala had already fled.
16:34Shapiro survived the terrible experience
16:37and now works as a chef.
16:39Why in the world are there so many other victims
16:42when it was a known fact what he did to me?
16:45Larry Flint survived Joseph Paul Franklin.
16:49Larry Flint, president of Larry Flint Publications
16:53and producer of the magazine Hustler,
16:56also had an encounter with a serial killer.
16:59On March 6, 1978, Flint and his lawyer
17:03were shot by a man who was standing in front of them.
17:07Years later, the white supremacist Joseph Paul Franklin,
17:11who had murdered between 7 and 22 people,
17:14at the end of the 70s,
17:16was given the responsibility.
17:19Franklin said he was upset
17:21by the interracial photos that appeared in Hustler.
17:32Although Flint survived the attack,
17:34his spine suffered irreparable damage,
17:37which left him permanently paralyzed
17:40and dependent on medication.
17:42Corazón Amurao survived Richard Speck.
17:46Although Speck's reign of terror lasted only one night,
17:50it is heartbreaking anyway.
17:53On the night of July 13 to 14, 1966,
17:57Speck burst into a dormitory
17:59that housed nursing students
18:01and that's where he attacked and murdered 8 of his occupants.
18:05Amurao could have been the ninth victim,
18:08but he hid under a bed
18:10while Speck killed the other 8 women.
18:14He remained under the bed until 6 in the morning,
18:17when he finally came out between the blood and the bodies.
18:21Later, Amurao identified Speck in court,
18:24which helped sentence him to life imprisonment.
18:28There he died of a heart attack in 1991.
18:37Bundy already appeared on this list.
18:40The man who killed more than 30 people
18:43almost added two more to his list
18:45on the morning of January 15, 1978,
18:49when he broke into the house of a women's brotherhood
18:52of the State University of Florida.
18:54After hitting a woman with a log and strangling another,
18:58he attacked Lainer and Chandler.
19:07Lainer suffered a jaw fracture and a lacerated shoulder,
19:11while Chandler suffered a brain concussion,
19:14a crushed finger, a broken jaw and some lost teeth.
19:18Bundy's attacks on the four women lasted 15 minutes.
19:23If he had stayed longer,
19:25it is not known how many more would have suffered.
19:32Known as the Night Stalker,
19:34this man stole many houses
19:37and murdered at least 13 people in California
19:40between June 1984 and August 1985.
19:45He almost added the teenager Whitney Bennett to his list.
19:49And among the survivors of Ramirez,
19:51his story is perhaps the most disconcerting.
19:54Bennett was hit with a tire
19:56and strangled with a telephone cable.
19:59However, Ramirez saw sparks coming out of the cord
20:02and when Bennett took a deep breath,
20:04he got scared and ran away.
20:07Ramirez was a Satanist and believed
20:09that this was a sign that Jesus Christ had saved his victim.
20:13Hence his fear.
20:15He left Bennett alive,
20:16but with huge lacerations in the scalp
20:19that required 478 stitches to close.
20:28The Zodiac Killer
20:29is one of the most famous serial killers of all time.
20:34And perhaps his best-known attack was that of Lake Berryessa.
20:38On the afternoon of September 27, 1969,
20:41Brian Hartnell and his girlfriend Cecilia Shepard
20:44were on a picnic on Lake Berryessa.
20:47It wasn't long before a man with a executioner's hood appeared,
20:52who tied them up and proceeded to stab them
20:55numerous times while they were on the ground.
21:11Hartnell survived his wounds
21:13and then told his story to the authorities.
21:16However, it was in vain.
21:18The Zodiac Killer was never captured.
21:21We haven't reached the end yet.

21:33Rebecca Garde survived Gary Ridgway.
21:37Known as the Green River Killer,
21:39the 49 confirmed killings of Ridgway
21:43make him the most prolific serial killer
21:46in the history of the United States.
21:48And the unconfirmed killings
21:50could raise the total to more than 90.
21:57Garde almost went to the account
21:59when Ridgway picked her up
22:01while asking for a ride on the Pacific Highway.
22:04After offering to perform an intimate service to Ridgway,
22:08she was taken to the forest where Ridgway attacked her.
22:11She managed to defend herself
22:12and ran to a nearby wheelhouse
22:14where they quickly picked her up and took refuge.
22:17Although she could barely speak after the attack,
22:20she survived and is very fortunate to have achieved it.
