00:00Listen to the chef talk after last night's game about the locker room and the rotation.
00:09I want everybody, whatever you're doing, listen closely.
00:14This is a very important premise, I think, that affects not last night's game, all the
00:20games.
00:22Everything that we're going to talk about with Warrior Basketball for the whole year,
00:28I think, is tucked into this comment from Steph Curry.
00:32Take a listen.
00:33Energy's been great from day one of training camp.
00:34It's a beautiful locker room.
00:35Guys that are happy to be here, happy to play the way that we do.
00:36I understand everybody's here to get the opportunity.
00:37Coach has done a pretty good job of explaining the situation we're all in, like, in a positive
00:38way.
00:39Again, how many guys he would like to play and how many guys can't play.
00:40To your point, you have to have, again, a commitment.
00:41No agendas, no egos, or healthy egos.
00:42When you're out there, like, you know you're supposed to be out there, but if it's not
00:43your night, you can't bring the team down with your energy.
00:44I haven't seen any red flags with that.
00:45It's a beautiful locker room.
00:46I understand everybody's here to get the opportunity.
00:47Coach has done a pretty good job of explaining the situation we're all in, like, in a positive
00:48way.
00:49Again, how many guys he would like to play and how many guys can't play.
00:50To your point, you have to have, again, a commitment.
00:51No agendas, no egos, or healthy egos.
00:52When you're out there, like, you know you're supposed to be out there, but if it's not
00:53your night, you can't bring the team down with your energy.
00:54I haven't seen any red flags with that.
00:55You can't bring everybody down.
01:24That for me is the most pointed at Clay, because last year there was five or six other
01:30things that were distractible, and they became distractions.
01:34You know what I'm starting to learn in listening to a lot of others who are really, really
01:38close to this team, and then also just using my own eyes and ears, this wasn't just last
01:43year.
01:44It was the year before that, too.
01:45Agreed.
01:46Agreed.
01:47So, now it's, when it's not your night, don't bring everyone down.
01:51No egos, healthy egos.
01:54Right.
01:55It's a beautiful locker room, he said.
01:58It's a beautiful locker room with people who want to be here.
02:04Now, listen, I get it.
02:05On the first day of school, you almost always like your teacher, and then things happen,
02:11and sometimes by January, you're like, I don't like this person anymore.
02:14Not my third grade teacher, Ms. McIntyre, rest in peace.
02:17Right out the gate, you didn't like her?
02:18She was awful.
02:19And she was probably 70 then.
02:23If she's still alive, she's at least a buck ten.
02:25Just mean.
02:26Like, old school, mean.
02:29And fish, like an old tuna fish sandwich.
02:31Ew.
02:32Ew.
02:33The worst, but anyway.
02:34Anyway.
02:35But for the most part, yes.
02:36Love your teacher, first day of school.
02:37And it's the first day of school, although they've played one game, they've been together
02:41now for six weeks.
02:43That first day of school was all recess yesterday, no learning.
02:46Sure, I mean, they played the Portland Blazers, so it was kind of dodgeball with the fourth
02:50graders playing the second graders.
02:51That's fine, I get it.
02:54But there are some very key phrases in there.
02:59And while there's zero part of me that thinks Steph Curry woke up yesterday, won a basketball
03:07game and then went, cool, next on my to-do list is, let's go rip Klay Thompson to the
03:12media.
03:13I don't think it's like that.
03:16I don't think it's like that at all.
03:19But good Lord, it feels that way.
03:23I can't escape the feel of all these comments, and he's not alone.
03:29Steve Kerse made some of them to us the other day.
03:32Buddy Heald sounded like it, and he didn't even play with Klay Thompson.
03:37But everything I'm hearing and feeling from this team when they tell us what matters to
03:44them and what's going on behind the scenes feels like they're all saying, thank God
03:51he's gone.
03:52I think it's more than just, he's gone.
03:54And that is, I think, the headline of what's different last year to this year.
03:58But there's a lot more to it than that, and I'm just remembering when it all happened
04:03and Draymond Green was inactive for two, he played six, was inactive for another, played
04:07three, and then he got suspended on November 16th.
04:10His first of two suspensions.
04:12So as far as things that hung over the team last year, that was a month into it, and you
04:17started the year with a lot of losses.
04:19The Klay situation, Chris Paul came in and he fit for the most part, but he knew that
04:25he was going to be there for one year and gone, and he probably was already getting
04:28ready for the next thing in his world.
04:32And you had other parts of the team, I think, that were more unsettled than just Klay Thompson
04:37and his negative energy.
04:39Listen, I don't think anything in a locker room or a season, nothing is ever one person's
04:45fault.
04:46Like, that's too simplistic.
04:49There's just so many things going on in a season.
04:53But it doesn't change for me the feeling that they feel, thank God he's gone.
05:01Again, I don't know, and I don't even think, I'm sure if any one of them were on the phone
05:07with us right now or sitting next to us, they'd be like, no, no, that's not how it
05:11feels.
05:12I'm just here to tell them it sounds like that.
05:16Thank God he's gone is a little too strong for me, but it reminds me of, for example,
05:21when you have a kid who graduates high school in June and they don't get to start college
05:26until September and they just cannot wait to be independent and they cannot wait to
05:30get out on their own.
05:31And so from June to September, that last summer when they're home and they have to live under
05:36mom and dad's roof and mom and dad's rules, it can be awkward and they can't wait to
05:40leave.
05:41And deep down, the parents are also eager for you to go.
05:44When do the dorms open?
05:45Because I can't wait to drop you off.
05:47And so it's a little bit of that, not thank God you're gone, but it was time for him to
05:52go somewhere else.
05:53It was time for them to have him be somewhere else.
05:56And yet you had to play a whole season of this cat and mouse game where he turns down
06:01a contract and then there's no other contract and he's playing poorly and he's not happy
06:06and if he's not happy, you're not happy because the three of them, Steph, Clay, and Dre, they've
06:11been Steph, Clay, and Dre for the better part of a decade.
06:13And so to see your brother go through it and kind of put you through it too, it makes it
06:19so yeah, it's not thank God he's gone, but thank God we can all turn the page.
06:24For sure.
06:25You know, it feels like a teen movie.
06:28Every teen movie has the exact same premise, right?
06:31The guy has the crush on the, like the captain of the cheer squad type of a girl, the unreachable,
06:38just absolute visual perfection and he's chasing the entire time and chasing and chasing and
06:45it turns out that that friend of his, the one that's just kind of cute, who's been sitting
06:50next to him all along and at some point we'll get a makeover about 90 minutes into the film
06:54and you realize that she's actually drop dead gorgeous too and that's the one that you should
07:00have been with all along.
07:01This is some kind of wonderful.
07:04Stop.
07:05Eric Stoltz.
07:06Perfect.
07:07Stop chasing this name value of Clay.
07:10Is the team much happier to have, for example, happy-go-lucky Buddy Buckets, who the Sacramento
07:19Kings fans hate because apparently he doesn't understand basketball or something like that,
07:25but my God, he can shoot it and he smiles.
07:28So listen to Buddy Heald.
07:31Ask what it takes to be a part of a rotation so big.
07:35First of all, you gotta start off liking each other.
07:37I feel like I think everybody has the right personalities.
07:40Everybody comes in and there's no egos and plus me coming here, there's a standard that
07:47these guys go by in this championship.
07:50They've done the work.
07:52So no matter what you say is wrong because whatever they say is right and you just go
07:55by that and you learn and you listen and you try to observe everything and you just
08:00try to figure out how to imply myself into their uniqueness and how I can be effective.
08:08All I can say is if everything I've ever heard from the last two years of Clay Thompson had
08:12an opposite, that was it.
08:15Like listen to him.
08:17The first thing we got to do is like each other and then the next thing you do is do
08:21whatever the hell Steve, Steph and Draymond tell you to because they're right.
08:26Yeah, they've done it.
08:27They've won and they have a culture and they have a system and it's that's what you do
08:30when you're a new player coming in.
08:31And I also think that if you look at the roster contract wise, there's almost no uncertainty
08:37about the future.
08:38Yes.
08:39Jonathan coming as the big one.
08:40Sure.
08:41Is he going to get Golden State Warriors extension money?
08:43Is he going to have to go somewhere else?
08:45That is the big one.
08:46DeAnthony Melton's on a one year deal.
08:48But if he does Melton things, he's going to get a contract similar to the one he got
08:52this year.
08:53And virtually everyone else is either from here, loved here, or they have a long term
08:58deal.
08:59So there isn't that, you know, overarching.
09:02I need to get mine.
09:03Part of this coming is going to be the interesting one to watch for sure, for sure.
09:09Like it took one night for us to be like, is Jonathan going to like this?
09:13I didn't know.
09:14There's nothing bad that happened last night other than the fact that he didn't look really
09:17good.
09:18And and that's not going to get under my skin yet.
09:21Maybe I had questions about Jonathan coming before this year.
09:25So they carry over.
09:27I'm certainly not going to write him off after after one night.
09:30But there are there are concerns there or questions there, no doubt.
09:35But yes, we're talking about someone who had his agent make a phone call to NBA reporters
09:41so that they could tweet that he's lost faith in Steve Kerr to be the person that that oversees
09:49his development going forward.
09:51That happened.
09:52That happened less than a year ago.
09:54And then apparently they all made nice.
09:56And then Jonathan got minutes.
09:58And so now apparently it's OK.
10:01But I think all of us are fair to have that thought that you just put out there in our
10:05bellies.
10:06Wait a minute.
10:07Now you're going to do a 12 man rotation.
10:09And no one's going to do more than 25 minutes.
10:12And Jonathan's going to score 10 and look woefully outplayed by Mr. I don't know where
10:19he is, Mr. Let's give up on him.
10:21Andrew Wiggins looked way better than Jonathan coming last night.
10:26How many more games like this before Jonathan starts feeling some type of way again?
10:32Well, there's going to be measures that are taken if he has games like last night on the
10:37regular.
10:38And then he won't be starting and he'll be getting back to where he was a couple of post
10:41seasons ago where his minutes were really reduced.
10:44And Steve's going to have to coach him up.
10:46And we all have to remember how young Jonathan coming is still is not only chronologically,
10:51but basketball wise, a guy who never played in college.
10:54He played one year of G League and then now he's with the championship team.
10:59He's a very young basketball player.
