Tory leadership candidate Robert Jenrick has said that firearms officer Martyn Blake who shot Chris Kaba is a "hero" who "should never have been prosecuted." Mr Blake was acquitted on Monday after shooting dead 24-year-old Mr Kaba, but has been forced to go into hiding after gangsters put a £10,000 bounty on his head. When reporting restrictions were lifted after the case concluded, it emerged Mr Kaba was a “core member” of one of London’s most dangerous criminal gangs and was allegedly directly linked to shootings in the days before he was killed.

00:00Well Chris Cabot was on a one-man crime spree, stabbing and shooting and harming people across
00:06London. London is safer without him. I won't mourn his death. What we need to do now is end the farce
00:12for Sergeant Blake. This man is a hero. He needs to be able to get on with his life and return to
00:17service if that's what he needs to do. We need to ensure that he is not dragged through the mud
00:22anymore and any suggestion of now having him charged with gross misconduct is put to bed.
00:29I think firearms officers do an immensely difficult job. Dangerous. Having to make
00:34split-second decisions on our behalf. The highest bar should be applied before they
00:39are prosecuted and in this case it seems clear to me given the jury reached its
00:43judgment so quickly that he should not have been prosecuted.
