00:00to talk to our Celtics writer our Celtic do you want to be an insider or do you like what
00:07mega is here i don't think i gained insider yet i think you have no i i appreciate that hi everybody
00:13thanks for having me um yeah writer's fine that's what i do i write i podcast if you haven't listened
00:17to my podcast slammed it's all about the Celtics so great content last night with uh the guys
00:22arriving jaylen brown arriving uh with uh sneaks in hand and uh sweet jacket oh my god the jacket
00:29was they're like where do i get it from i don't know it looked like snake it looked like it was
00:34snake i think it's kind of crocodile well either way it had a sec yeah we need it we need to find
00:39out who makes that so see if we can get one of those i thought the warm-up what do you what did
00:43you think well yeah i thought the warm-ups were nice i like the warm-ups yeah i like those jackets
00:47they're selling them on the website they just popped up but i can't find the actual price for
00:51them it just says that they're coming courtney if you have to ask i can't afford it i know but 25
00:56off site wide right now okay yeah thanks for the promo yeah a buck 50 it was a great night last
01:01night i i you know i and from a celebrity perspective wiggy was asking you who was there
01:07there were definitely some of the new england patriots who were there last night drake may was
01:11there i i didn't get to see him they didn't show him at least while i was paying attention
01:17uh which i thought was odd but maybe uh maybe they didn't want to show i don't know um but it
01:23was cool to see those guys out there in support as they always are yeah the drake may thing's really
01:28interesting to me overall there wasn't a big light on the patriots maybe part of it was just hey it's
01:33banner night like yeah let's give the spotlight over to everything celtics be it celtics of the
01:39past with bob koozie you know coming out there uh cedric maxwell and the big three of course
01:45so maybe that was it but i think maybe that's thinking kindly like maybe those guys show drake
01:50don't need the spotlight right now yeah yeah i i i rather than like the these real celebrities
01:55the entertainers i know kodak black are they well kodak black was there i'm 21 savage that i didn't
02:02know he i didn't know 21 savage was there donnie was up you know our guy donnie walberg was there
02:07repping so i was like i mentioned like those type of people you you brought up uh kai
02:13cyan i always get his name that's what i thought yeah i love kai yeah benson boone is big yeah i
02:22didn't i didn't he was i think he ended up at straga last night but i had no clue what was this
02:27party at straga yeah it wasn't really a party it was just it sounds like a party no it was just
02:31free food for wiggies no no also curtis i believe i believe that sanat was the issue that aaron
02:36rogers had i actually have i have a sanat infection he tried to eat those sanats
02:43shout out to nicky and nico and all that's okay let me ask you i mean that's all right seven
02:48basketball basketball wise at least last night this team is right back where they left off
02:53um gerard mayo on this show this week said that a win fixes everything for the new england
03:00patriots did winning a championship fix uh if there was anything between jason tatum and jaylen
03:08brown did did winning this championship fix that or was that or were there no issues they just seem
03:14to me to be so comfortable with each other and both have accepted what their roles are it seems
03:20yeah you know it's kind of silly but i i wonder what you think greg like one of the things that
03:25i thought was interesting last night was the order of getting the rings and jason tatum gets
03:30the final spot of the last guy to go get the rings he gets to be the guy on the microphone who's up
03:36there and saying let's go do it again and so and even though jaylen brown was the one who was the
03:42finals mvp yeah jason tatum still holds that role and i i think it's kind of like everybody's just
03:48agreed yes jason tatum is the cornerstone of the franchise and that's how it is you know i think b
03:56can't comes before t so they said you know we're gonna go alphabetical order when it comes to the
04:01jays yeah that's what they told jaylen anyway okay i don't know i i i don't know how much there was
04:08there before about like any true animosity i think a lot of that stuff has really been overblown
04:13but yeah winning definitely fixes everything i also think that it helps to have jason tatum
04:18have something to go for in terms of being the finals mvp because i don't think he's got a shot
04:24at being regular season mvp anytime soon while while the roster is this stacked and the style
04:30of basketball that they play where everybody gets a touch you're not going to get the jason tatum
04:35stat line that you got last night which was spectacular that doesn't doesn't seem right
04:40like what do you mean like i think jason tatum i he'll finish top five for mvp but is he going to
04:46be even top three you just like look at the other guys who are out there and they're in these
04:50offenses that completely revolve around them that's not the celtic yeah but then you if you
04:55really look at that mego the guy that's how it should be but but the guy but it's really not
04:59because the guy who's been winning it consecutively for like the past three years never leads the
05:05league in scoring never you know sometimes he's neck and neck when it comes to him and jamal
05:12mario when leading his team and scoring it which is the joker but he's got you know he's he's always
05:18like damn they're averaging a triple double so he averages about 20 points and and if tatum can
05:24do that and still get his 20 25 average points per night but he's averaging eight assist and maybe
05:34seven rebounds that's the mvp and then your team being good because that's how the joker was able
05:41to win it so i think it's kind of flipped from just the guy who is the leading scorer you know
05:46i agree but i still think that okay if you look at the depth of of the nuggets it's still not
05:53comparable to i wouldn't even say like the starting five but the six or seven that the
05:57celtics are rolling out there and i think that hurts tatum's case the only thing that i think
06:01might help is like if there gets to be some kind of voter fatigue with yokich but honestly the
06:07voters love yokich so much it seems like everybody hates everybody just wants him back up there so
06:13we'll see and the criticism the celtics have gotten might hurt tatum in the end for that as
06:17well but everybody's talking about the threes i was more impressed with the lack of turnovers in
06:21this one because that was something that they struggled with at times last season is that a
06:25joe mizula is that a a tip to joe mizula where he's been able to fix that i'm sure it is but
06:31honestly like the thing that jumps out to me with this team and it's a hat tip to your guy wick is
06:36the continuity these guys have been playing together you run it back but a lot of these guys
06:41have been playing together as a core for so many years now that it's almost just looks instinctual
06:48out there in terms of having your back when the offense gets a little squirrelly when somebody
06:53gets a little trapped up in a way that it definitely wasn't a couple years ago and you
06:58have to give credit to individuals like jaylen brown who i used to clown on all the time for he
07:03can't go left and the handle had got so exposed in the 2022 finals like he's definitely put into
07:10work but i think a lot of it has to do with the continuity of the roster these guys know each
07:15other so well that you go up against a team like the knicks that made major changes in the final
07:21weeks of the offseason there's just no comparison there where they are right now it's hard not to
07:27watch that team last night and and think that they could go undefeated like i like who's gonna
07:33be like undefeated i'm just kidding you curtis who who do you see beating them this season
07:40look if they don't get back to the finals to me that's a major disappointment and i'm sure
07:45i am sure that's the way that everybody feels over there because of what they've invested
07:52monetarily in this team because of what the changes are that are coming on the horizon and
07:57the uncertainty that's what it is once you're back there it's so obviously it's so early in the
08:02season we just had the first game last night but like looking out in the west there are these teams
08:07coming up okc is one to watch the nuggets again still have murray and yokich and that's a talented
08:15team that underperformed last year but yeah the celtics should win again this should be a repeat
08:21scenario that was well the thing that i liked last night you know you you were able to see it
08:26more glaringly being there is it looks like tatum got a whole new bag like just his you know the
08:33ability to to be able to pull up off the jumper and have a quick release there was a couple times
08:38i'm getting to the hole playing with his back to the basket he has that little like kobe bryant
08:44half fake and fade away i i think that's what takes this team over is you start to see him
08:51take that next step with his on the on the court play absolutely like tatum so he's been dancing
08:59around it a lot in the preseason and in training camp he was clearly working on his shooting
09:04mechanics with his personal coach drew hamlin who i've had the opportunity to talk to a couple times
09:10in the offseason and that quick release i think is a big part of it the shot looks so much better
09:16so so much better i don't know what was altered in the second half of last season or in the
09:21playoffs but it obviously wasn't coming out right and i don't think it was an injury thing
09:26i thought that what he's been like very coy about it when you ask about the specifics because i
09:31think he doesn't want to give away he doesn't he doesn't want people to know but i agree
09:36like i i do think that that's a real change that he's made he also got the monkey off his back too
09:40he's playing much looser all of them are you know to not have that constant comfort conversation
09:45around the celtics team of they they can't get it done they can they can have a great regular
09:49season but you get to the the postseason and things fall apart they looked like they were
09:54you know kids playing pickup basketball last night and having fun with it which is so much
10:00better probably for tatum and if there's one thing for tatum that i will say that's when he plays
10:05best and he's admitted that when the score is up when everything's clicking tatum takes off like
10:11he soars and we've seen that at times in fourth quarters of games where it's kind of close but
10:17they're already ahead i think the next step of growth for tatum is to be the guy who really
10:22really turns the momentum of the game so when you find yourselves if it's possible for this team to
10:28this year if they find themselves down 20 is he the guy who picks up the shovel and starts digging
10:34them out of that hole because his shot is falling and he's that guy but also what do they do if the
10:40threes aren't going in like that's the only issue like they don't have that low post game or they
10:45haven't focused on that and i yeah you know i i think it's it's they're in an interesting spot
10:51right now because even with their bigs it's such a focus on spreading the floor and porzingis isn't
10:57out there right now and that's the guy who who really does that for you who can stretch it
11:02but honestly the i wrote about this last night the the three game is where it's at for them
11:08they're gonna be a make or miss team they're gonna live and die by it and that's statistically
11:14analytically like all the nerd stuff that people hate to hear that's where they're at and it won
11:20them a championship last year and so you just gotta accept it they're they're gonna still run
11:25downhill like we see jaylen brown and jason tatum doing that and getting to the rim it's not like
11:31that aspect of their game isn't there but if you're looking for some kind of like early 90s
11:36inside out physical think you're watching the bad boy pistons that's not this team
11:46no one plays like that flip a switch all of a sudden and be like bodying guys up at the rim
11:51that's just not who they're gonna be no one does that um weigh in or settle this debate maybe if
11:56can on this program between chris and wiggy is joe mizula the best coach in the nba yeah
12:04sorry who's better than him i who's better i'm i mean i i don't you could probably name like three
12:10or four guys who are better than him i don't i don't think that there's i don't think that's
12:15what i want to know eric's full straw i don't think i would say he's not but go ahead that's
12:22one i'd still i'm not saying like i would put this gets into like a belichick type territory
12:27i'm not saying that i would take him as my coach now but i still think popovich is definitely a
12:32more accomplished coach he's more accomplished pop i'll give you that but overall a better coach
12:37but right now if you put if you put mizula and put him on milwaukee i think milwaukee's winning
12:47over this celtics team huh you heard what i said yeah i spoke english
12:53very clearly has proven himself to be a really great coach you think the box
13:08like blood yeah no that was a that was a uh i didn't i heard him say that that was a little
13:12unique but he is a unique guy he is a unique everybody stop how many games does it take the
13:18bucks to beat the celtics with mizula as their head coach i think it's a seven game series okay
13:22i think it's a hard fought series that is unbelievable yeah oh yeah but mizula wins it
13:27in the end a guy that you wanted out of here 18 months ago because what mizula does is what we've
13:32seen him do with tatum and brown this is called an overcorrect no it's not an overcorrection
13:38he unlocks and gets everybody he gets dame lillard and yannis to buy into the roles that
13:45they need to have to win a championship that's what mizula does i don't know if yannis would
13:50be about that like some of you don't know because yannis has never been coached like that this is
13:55also just a very like i think that this is the the personalities on this team the way that they're
14:03comprised right now are very coachable team personalities who he's an unbelievable manager
14:10of personalities who's one of the greatest coaches in basketball that we talk about
14:15there's many like that we that we talk about consistently jj jackson right yeah phil jackson
14:23unbelievable manager of personality phil jackson knew how to do it he did it with jordan and pippen
14:28he did it with kobe and shack and that's also a very unique person right and that's
14:35phil was very unique and that's what he would bring to if mizula's coach in phoenix with devon
14:42booker bradley bill and durant he's able to unlock them i don't know if they're talented enough great
14:49able to unlock them at a point in their careers where their egos are probably at their highest
14:54if greg let me ask you a question if jj reddick is the coach of the celtics tomorrow who's the
14:58favorite to win the championship uh i would say it's probably the boston right do they win it
15:03though yes they do not they don't with jj reddick stop talking about stop it wait he actually
15:10believes that joe mizula he thinks that joe mizula could coach kobe bryant to an mvp award winning
15:15season this year too soon i mean maybe but if kobe was alive i think mizula has that ability
15:23that was my that was my point i know that he's no longer with us i know that rest in peace so
15:31say what you want because everybody goes to spolstra spole what is spolstra done when he
15:35didn't have lebron and d wade at their their peak right and chris bosch and ray allen what has he
15:43done i hate celebrating i hate celebrating that makes it sound like mizula's team that he's
15:48coaching right now isn't the most talented team in the league as we sit here they added they added
15:53pausing us are the celtics the most they added they added pausing us and they were always
15:58talented they had kairi they had brown they had tatum they couldn't win a chip they had emay who
16:04couldn't win a chip and i wasn't even a mizula fan if but mizula has swag to boston and mizula
16:09took that team to and won the championship i would say hands down he can handle that
16:16i hate when we celebrate coaches that win titles with the most talented here's what here's what i
16:20would say mizula is a great coach i think he's he's really the coaches developed into someone
16:25special but is he the best coach in the league i think it's flip the coaches jason kidd because
16:31you brought up kairi jason kidd and mizula flip them put mizula on dallas i think that's a problem
16:36for mizula no i think mizula i think mizula has enough where luca kairi all those guys by oh my
16:44god i wonder though what kind of like diet and exercise plan he'd get luca on what if what a good
16:50one greg what if you replace mayo with mizula look at jalen brown jalen brown says he treats
16:56them like navy seals but he loves it i don't think jalen's been a navy seal i thought he
17:00said killer whales oh no but i think you or maybe wick said they train like navy seals
17:06yes wick did say that then he said it was a while ago away from actual navy seals no no no but he
17:11but even um uh jalen brown talked about how difficult training camp was i agree again it's
17:18not navy seal training yes well i mean you know what i'm saying we know that like when we say
17:22we're going to war on a football field we don't actually mean like we're going to war like real
17:26soldiers we just play along with us like if you're like you're not a real soldier you know
17:31there's actually people now we understand that what if it was a hurricane mizu he just trains
17:35them very hard as well i mean did you know what you were getting into when you agreed to do this
17:39with us honestly i feel like it took wiki a couple minutes to warm up here where was this
17:46in the first two minutes okay what did you think of who was in attendance i wanted to hear what
17:53you had to say as a celtics writer i wanted to see what you were seeing when are we going to
17:59talk about my guy jayden daniels daniels oh man i cannot say anything wrong about your washington
18:08commanders because the go-go remixes oh man he's held to the commander he's got to be loving it
18:14down there money but it is of interest that they were in a very similar situation actually
18:19a worse situation than new england patriots were last season and i think we need to acknowledge
18:25the come up over there by your commanders yeah i i wouldn't say that it was exactly the same
18:30but i it's an interesting dichotomy let's leave it at that yeah it started in week one that was
18:36the difference starting week one and when as soon as he got there they said you're our guy
18:41rather than playing drake may like he's some you know scrabines off the street like well we don't
18:46know what we're gonna do we got you kobe brissett that i'll give the commander's credit for dan
18:50quinn wasn't playing any games that's what mayo should have been doing from day one they also
18:55drafted an offensive lineman one spot ahead of kate and wallace and he's playing left tackle for
19:04jayden daniels now all right yeah i ain't saying nothing about uh washington we'll
19:08get that right next time so we hope so come this off season all right mego great to see you
19:14we can read you at wei.com so i hear and listen to the podcast yes slammed slammed wherever you
19:21get your podcasts all right
