00:00The President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Bia arrives Cameroon in the company of
00:22First Lady Chantal Bia.
00:24The presidential couple is welcomed at Simaleni International Airport by the Secretary General
00:29of the President of the Republic, Ferdinand Nkongo.
00:32The euphoria at the airport, the effervescence on the streets of Yaoundé and the support
00:36mobilization to say welcome home is the President's come up in this newscast.
00:52Good evening and thanks for joining us.
00:54That was the lone headline on the 7.30 News tonight.
00:57I am Esther Kima.
00:58The President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Bia is back home.
01:03The head of state accompanied by Mrs. Chantal Bia touched down the Simaleni International
01:07Airport about 5 p.m. today after a stay in Europe.
01:12Upon arrival, he was received by his close aide amongst whom was the Secretary General
01:17of the Presidency of the Republic, Minister of State, Ferdinand Nkongo.
01:21Chief Unity Palace Correspondent, Asunyenti, reports on the long-awaited arrival of the
01:26President of the Republic.
01:31This is the expected moment.
01:33At 4.37 p.m. on this October 21st, the presidential aircraft emerges with glamour from the beautiful
01:40and Simaleni Yaoundé skies, executes a skilful approach and lands smoothly on the tarmac
01:46of the Simaleni International Airport.
01:48The plane then taxes majestically to a halt and out comes President Paul Bia in person,
01:55very much alive in a form that speaks for itself and dispelling any rumour about his
02:01absence.
02:02By shaking hands with the Minister of State, Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand
02:06Nkongo, it is clear that Paul Bia has been waiting for a longer than usual period with
02:14this close aide of his to get a sense of the pulse of a nation which he had left over a
02:20month ago.
02:21On September 2nd, Paul Bia left Cameroon to attend the Forum on China and Establish New
02:32Connections with Chinese Business Leaders.
02:35Since then, he has been in Geneva, Switzerland and is now returning to his dear country where
02:41he and his wife Chantal Bia are greeted with enthusiasm by the Cameroonian people.
02:46The first couple gets the first chance to size up their popularity just outside the
02:51Presidential Lodge as the President waves heartily at the crowd of Cameroonians that
02:56had come to cheer them up.
03:00It is now a done deal that the undisputed maestro of the Cameroonian sociopolitical chess
03:05board, the majestic lion man Paul Bia has come back, body and soul.
03:10He returns amid wild guesses about his well-being and like in 2004, the enigmatic Paul Bia,
03:17a mystery man and riddle all wrapped in one has once again defied those who had wished
03:23he doesn't return in one piece.
03:25It seems that each time such rumour is made, the President's popularity and rating grow
03:30in double measures.
03:32In downtown Yaoundé, Cameroonians from all walks of life, some abandoning their businesses
03:37and daily activities, including Dalton Thomas' eager to catch a glimpse of their President,
03:42flock to the Presidential itinerary in the streets and strategic junctions to greet him
03:48with an ecstatic ovation.
03:50It is overwhelming, it is euphoric and triumphant in a way that's better felt than described.
04:04It was to be expected that the people would want to be reassured about the well-being
04:09of their President and that the President will need to be comforted by the extreme of
04:14his people.
04:15The streets of Yaoundé are filled with love and good wishes for Paul Bia, reassuring everyone
04:20that he has always been in charge.
04:22With his return, there is no better way to shut down the speculation as the President
04:27is now expected to focus his attention on the no-short supply of governance challenges
04:33on his desk.
04:36The return of the Presidential couple to the country is a heart-warming event for Cameroonians
04:42across the board who are elated to see their President alive, contrary to the rumours spread
04:46on his ill health.
04:48To witness his arrival, a huge mobilisation was organised by supporters of the Cameroon
04:52People's Democratic Movement, the CPDM.
04:55The comrades from the different sections of the party, from the central region and beyond,
05:00flocked to the Simalen International Airport.
05:02Ayinpele was there and now reports.
05:14Warming and exciting was the atmosphere at the Simalen International Airport where hundreds
05:19of people had gathered.
05:23We are very happy, we are glad.
05:25We had fake news that the President was dead and I was like shocked.
05:31And now, as I see his plane landing now, I am very amazed.
05:37Drumming, dancing and singing, the crowd of Cameroonians from Yawende, Funde Division,
05:42Mefwa and Afamba, as well as other divisions in the centre and from around the country
05:47had all come to welcome their champion, the President of the Republic, Paul Bia.
06:02Among them, members of political parties, notably the Cameroon People's Democratic
06:06Movement, whose members drummed, danced and sang in honour and with pride for the presidential
06:12couple.
06:13It is a joy for us, our mother, she is always with us on this land of Simalen, it is a joy
06:20and we are waiting for her.
06:21To her, I say, we want to be with her for at least another 50 years.
06:27Excitement that peaked as the presidential motorcade slowly drove by with Paul and Chantal
06:33Bia lovingly waving to the crowd.
06:37He is the head of state, he is our national president, that is the CPTM, we are behind
06:44him, we shall continue voting for him.
06:47They had come, seen, waved back and were simply grateful that the President and First Lady,
06:53Mrs Chantal Bia, are back home.
06:59And away from the Yawende Simalen International Airport, the Yawende residents cheered as
07:04the motorcade of the first couple wound its way through the streets of the capital city
07:08from the airport to the unity palace.
07:10Supporters of the ruling CPTM party, just like curious bystanders, lined up the pavements
07:16to welcome their leader.
07:17Bobena Fonkamuta now reports on the effervescence.
07:23Questions and doubts transformed into admiration and acclamation as the presidential motorcade
07:30sped through the arteries of Yawende this Monday evening.
07:34Paul Bia is back, alive and well.
07:47Bystanders gathered along the streets of Yawende came from every corner of the national triangle
07:53to witness this moment.
07:54One southerner expressed that he travelled from his hometown to confirm the president's
08:00return and health, eager to share the good news upon his return.
08:05A joyful Mohamadou from the Adamawa region shared that he saw the president's hand
08:11wave through the tinted window of his Maybach.
08:13The president has come back.
08:15We have seen him and the camaraderie is all happy.
08:18At the Mvan Industrial Zone, workers, commuters and onlookers all paused to take in the moment.
08:25CPDM sympathisers cheered and chanted from one side of the road,
08:29while workers in travel agencies responded from the other side.
08:33The atmosphere magnified the presence of the Cameroonian leader,
08:37who had been rumoured to be critically ill.
08:40However, the events of Monday evening pointed to a different reality.
08:56The unnational president Paul Biya remains their candidate for the 2025 presidential election.
09:02As such, the party bigwigs burnt the candlelight to see supporters line up the streets of Yawende
09:07to say, welcome home, Mr President.
09:10Ebenezer Akanga reports on the popular gathering today.
09:25was swelling up already.
09:27Dance groups, supporters and sympathisers of the CPDM
09:31and the population took up positions to give the presidential couple a rousing welcome.
09:45While waiting, dance groups rivaled each other in animation.
09:49As the hour drew near, the ambience mounted.
09:54Then came the highly awaited moment.
09:56As soon as the presidential convoy was spotted from a distance,
10:00the chingaron about went into total ecstasy.
10:03The population waved the national flag, clapped ceaselessly,
10:07ululated at the top of their voices and chanted.
10:11The convoy of the presidential couple drove past the chingaron about to the unity palace,
10:27leaving those who turned out there in total frenzy.
10:34Meanwhile, a caravan of members of 35 transporters,
10:37syndicates nationwide have expressed their readiness to align with President Paul Bia
10:42in his pursuance of peace in the country.
10:45They crisscrossed the city of Yawende today,
10:47while hailing the president's return home,
10:49stating that it is a confirmation of his grasp of the affairs of the states.
10:54Prince Wilmukwele Aduma reports on the excitement and the messages carried.
11:01From rumours of his death to the formal denial by government,
11:06members of the Association of Transporters for Peace and Development
11:10shared the moment of truth with the rest of the country.
11:13The president is up, doing and is back.
11:28From 35 syndicates of the trucks, inter-urban taxis and commercial motorbikes nationwide,
11:34their catch of the glimpse of the president in this motorcade frenzy
11:39is to them a confirmation of his ability to managing state affairs.
12:05As President Paul Bia and wife Chantal waved at this line of transporters enthusiasts,
12:17the latter then engaged a tour of the city of Yawende with Mvugbi,
12:22education, central town, receiving the call of the transporters for all to join the president
12:29in his pursuance of peace, which peace enables business to thrive.
12:35And that euphoria will definitely continue for the coming days.
12:39With us in the studio is editorialist Dorache.
12:41You're welcome to the 730 News.
12:43Thank you very much, Esther.
12:44You're welcome.
12:45Having anchored the special broadcast on the arrival of President Paul Bia,
12:50how do you assess the reception given to him today?
12:53Well, Esther, I must say that it was really a privilege for me
12:57to anchor that special broadcast today.
12:59And from what we saw, we can say that the mobilization was huge.
13:04At the airport, along the streets of the nation's capital, right up to Unity Palace,
13:09the president is still very much in the hearts of Cameroonians, if we go by what we saw.
13:15And I'm sure that the presidential couple seeing the streets with people,
13:20the young, the old, just trying to get a glimpse of them was happy.
13:26You know that if you're absent from home, when you come back
13:30and you don't receive this very warm welcome, it becomes disturbing.
13:34So from what we saw, we can say that the president of the Republic
13:39is still very much in the hearts of Cameroonians.
13:41You know, there have been rumors circulating, speculations and so on.
13:47Everybody wanted to come out and see whether this was indeed their president.
13:52And if he was in good health, you saw that at one point he stopped
13:56and had to chat with the minister of state, secretary general in the presidency of the
14:02Republic. That was very assuring. And for me, that was the image of the day.
14:06It was the image of the day. Everybody was waiting for President Paul Biya.
14:09But now it came actually to dispel some of these rumors. Some person said he was dead,
14:14others said he was really, really sick and invalid. What's your reaction to that?
14:19Well, rumors, speculations in an era of social media,
14:24are things that we must accept and we must live with them.
14:28But sometimes what I understand is that Cameroonians wanted to see their president.
14:33You know that President Paul Biya has been loved by Cameroonians.
14:37Everybody loved President Paul Biya, especially when he came to power.
14:42And at this point in time, when the president is about 91 years old,
14:46he is still in the hearts of Cameroonians.
14:48So going for one month without seeing your president, it was something that was disturbing.
14:54So Cameroonians wanted to see their president. What they asked for was just to catch a glimpse
14:59of him. And today they saw him. They saw that he was fine. And we can say that social media
15:07or fake news occurs in vibrant societies. You cannot not live with it and we cannot control it.
15:14That we must see. But sometimes it works to the advantage of the victim.
15:18Sometimes it does not work to the advantage of the victim.
15:20But for President Paul Biya, he has been at the center of discussions,
15:25political debates for the past weeks. And I think it worked in his advantage because
15:30today everybody wanted to see him. I wanted to see him. And I saw him.
15:35Absolutely. And you're happy. So tell us about some of the lessons
15:38that we can learn from these issues of misinformation. We are in an evolving world.
15:44There is artificial intelligence and all of that. What lessons do we have to learn
15:49from this incident of today? Well, we have to live with the
15:52social media. We have to live with fake news. In political matters, it will be terrible. It
15:58will not be good for somebody to be forgotten, to be sent to oblivion. It is good that you should
16:04be there. You should be alive. And the second thing I want to say is from demobilization,
16:10we see that the president is still very much loved. He's still in the hearts of Cameroonians
16:15going by what we saw. People came from far and near. They wanted to see him.
16:19So we can say that the second lesson is that President Paul Biya is still there,
16:24he is still governing, and people still love him. And like I said, social media, we have to
16:31live with it. Cameroon cannot be an island. So it depends on the way you use it. Some people
16:37use it to make money. Some people use it for political gains. But I'm sure that these past
16:42weeks, the president of the republic has come back to life. He has fully come back to life.
16:47And we also have realized that we've also learned that Cameroon democracy is vibrant. It is alive.
16:54People say what they like, when they like, and nothing happens to them.
16:59And finally, Esther, I must say that Cameroon is still governed.
17:02Thank you very much, Dorache. Editorialist on CRTV for being our guest on this 730 News. And
17:08we shall be giving you echoes of the president's arrival, how Cameroonians have reacted in the
17:13other 10 regions of Cameroon. But that notwithstanding, the presidential couple has
17:18definitely returned home to the country after an intense diplomatic activity out of the country
17:23from the 2024 Forum on China, Africa Corporation, where President Paul Biya spent days wooing
17:30Chinese investors in Beijing to his outing at the Olympic Games in France. His mission
17:35has been hectic for the benefit of Cameroon. Ayimbele now reports on how active the president
17:41has been out of the country. Governor's challenges on.
17:46The summer of intense diplomacy for the president of the republic started with the July opening
17:51ceremony of the Olympics in Paris, France, honoring an invitation from his French counterpart,
17:57Emmanuel Macron, and accompanied by the first lady, Mrs. Chantal Biya. President Paul Biya
18:03joined world leaders for the momentous opening ceremony in the evening of July 26, a day marked
18:10by a reception offered by the French president in honor of his guest, but also by a meeting between
18:17the president of the republic and his French counterpart in a tête-à-tête that took place at
18:22the Elysee Palace. Hearty moments for both leaders, whose countries have a long history
18:28of very friendly and cordial relations with both bilateral and multilateral aspects that
18:34certainly took center stage during the about one hour one-on-one discussion that unfolded
18:40behind closed doors. Moments of great historical significance that took even more meaning when
18:47after the head of state held the chain of solidarity and fraternity demonstrated by
18:53African riflemen alongside the allied forces that led to the victorious liberation of France
18:59during the Second World War. In a speech delivered at the National Necropolis of
19:05Belarus on August 15 during a special ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the
19:12allied landings in Provence, France, President Paul Biya paid tribute to the fallen heroes and
19:18surviving soldiers for their spirit of bravery, admirable willingness, and ultimate sacrifice,
19:25values he added which ought to be preserved and transferred to future generations. President
19:31Paul Biya also condemned the current trends of proxy wars, terrorism, and lack of trust among
19:38nations who should, he reiterated, maintain all channels of dialogue during crisis to facilitate
19:45the peaceful resolution of conflicts in the world. Invited by French President Emmanuel Macron,
19:51the head of state during the events which was followed around the globe again demonstrated
19:58in his memorable remarks his attachment to peace, liberty, and solidarity. A vision of the world
20:05shared with the French President and French people, including the former French President
20:09Nicolas Sarkozy, to whom the President of the Republic granted an audience while in Paris,
20:15knotting ties for Cameroon's economic prosperity. A permanent quest to make Cameroon a key partner
20:23for development that took the President of the Republic weeks later to China. Elevated in 2018
20:30to the prestigious rank of a great friend of China by his Chinese counterpart, President Paul
20:36Biya and First Lady Mrs. Chantal Biya, who received a deferential treatment upon their arrival at the
20:43Beijing International Airport, had come to attend the Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
20:50On the invitation of President Xi Jinping, President Paul Biya and members of his delegation
20:55took part in the opening ceremony of FOCAC, participated in several high-level meetings
21:01and engagements, including a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping. During the meeting,
21:09both heads of state announced their readiness to elevate Sino-Cameroon ties to a comprehensive
21:15strategic partnership. President Paul Biya also commended the floor of direct investments from
21:21China that have resulted in the execution of important development-oriented infrastructural
21:26projects in the energy, transport, telecommunications, agriculture, mining and sports
21:33sectors, as he highlighted the ongoing construction by China of a new edifice to host Cameroon's
21:39parliament in Yaoundé. Cooperation ties which took centre stage again during a welcome banquet
21:46by President Xi and his wife, and a state dinner offered by Zuo Lianjie,
21:52Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China
21:56at the Great Hall of the People, in honour of the President and his wife, Mrs. Chantal Biya,
22:03the First Lady who joined the First Lady of China, Mrs. Penlunia, and her peers from the continent
22:08to promote the education and empowerment of women. Tireless, the President of the Republic,
22:15assisted by his close aides, also received five major Chinese business groups in audience.
22:22The business people specialised in the logistics, telecommunications and energy sectors
22:27spent not less than 30 minutes with the Head of State who reiterated Cameroon's readiness to
22:34expand its scope of business deals with Chinese investors. Fulfilling and promising moments for
22:40the Head of State, encouraged and warmly supported by members of the Cameroon diaspora who recognise
22:47that the time spent abroad by the President always yields for Cameroon significant benefits.
23:00And away from our special report on the return of His Excellency Paul Biya to Cameroon,
23:05the Government of Cameroon and the diaspora in Germany have ended a series of meetings aimed
23:09at ensuring collaboration and participation in nation building. The annual meeting chaired
23:14by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Monona Futsu, led to the adoption
23:19of 13 recommendations. Jyoti Kalilisonge reports that putting in place of a sub-volunteering
23:25programme to share expertise is one of the resolutions.
23:30Moral, civic and entrepreneurial rearmament, even for Cameroonians in the diaspora. This is amongst
23:36the 13 new recommendations agreed upon at the Hellborn III conclave in Germany.
23:41For the effective participation of youth to the development of their fatherland,
23:45another proposal is to have sub-voluntary programmes through which expertise can be
23:50shared and the young mentored. Incentives such as the award of prizes to outstanding
23:56Very welcoming from the government that they organise such events and looking for those of
24:02us in the diaspora to actually dialogue with us and looking for methods on how to accompany
24:08any developments that we want to do back at home. Cameroonians at this third annual meeting have
24:13also been assured that the technical secretariat of the government's diaspora dialogue platform
24:19will be restructured to enable the participation of youth to the development of their fatherland.
24:24Will be restructured to enhance communication. I was also very impressed regarding the quality
24:29of the projects that have been submitted to the diaspora. Rich exchanges as such are a motivation
24:35for them to keep promoting Cameroon's cultural and patriotic values wherever they are in the world.
24:43Back in the country, producers of gas products and distilled
24:47liqueur have warned against manufacturing items that threaten the health of the population.
24:52The Interim Minister of Mines, Industries and Technological Development,
24:56Professor Fou Kalistou Gentry, was speaking in Douala today during a working visit.
25:01Mado Nkwele has the details from CRTV Litura.
25:05The first stop of the working visit of the acting Minister of Mines, Industries and
25:09Technological Development, Professor Fou Kalistou Gentry, in the economic capital,
25:14was at this gas production factory at the Bonaberi Industrial Zone. After a tour of the site,
25:19the minister expressed satisfaction given the structure's alignment
25:23with the government's import substitution dynamic. Professor Fou Kalistou,
25:27accompanied by Litoral's Governor Samo Diodone Iwaha Dibowa and his Etat Major,
25:32proceeded to a whiskey production industry to ensure the quality of the products distributed
25:36for sale in the markets. We will continue to insist on quality, to see that rots,
25:43whiskey or anything that we are producing follows the norms. The minister also revealed
25:49other projects to be realised in the Litoral and South West regions. We will visit the new
25:54tiles factory we are trying to develop, the place where we are developing and building new gas
25:59bottles. I want to assure the South West that they have the Transfrontalia gas project between
26:07Equatorial Guinea and the South West, which will be one of the largest industrial concerns in
26:13Africa. This visit aimed at improving the living conditions of Cameroonians continues Tuesday,
26:19October 22 to two other industries in the Douala Bassa and Bonaberi industrial zones.
26:27Non-profit organisations and non-governmental organisations will henceforth have to produce
26:32annual reports on their sources of funding and how they use money from funders. These conditions
26:38expected to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing were outlined by the Minister of
26:43Territorial Administration Paul Atanganji today during a workshop in Yaoundé. Beatrice
26:48Losamba reports that these annual reports are already being awaited at the ministry.
26:55Details of their funders and how they use the funds received are top secret,
27:00shared only between non-profit organisations or NGOs and their sponsors. Most NGOs render
27:07accounts to their headquarters. Most of the reports go through that channel. From now hence,
27:13they should be sending reports to the Ministry of Territorial Administration. The National Agency
27:19for Financial Investigation, that's ANIF, suspects these funds could be used to finance
27:24terrorism activities or for the purpose of money laundering. You should have a clear picture
27:31of all your activities on the field. It's vital for us, it's good for you, you are protected,
27:37we are protected and we live in a very safe environment, void of money laundering and
27:46financial assistance to any kind of terrorist activities. At this workshop, they learned
27:52that the law demands transparency. The Ministry of Territorial Administration will hold them
27:57accountable. They are expected to produce yearly reports on their activities and finances.
28:04In security news, 100 police staff will in the next two weeks undergo training
28:09on public security maintenance with the support of the Spanish Embassy in Cameroon.
28:13The programme was presented today to the Delegate General for National Security,
28:18Martin Bangangile, by the Spanish Ambassador Ignacio Garcia Lombrera. Beatrice Ngoum reports
28:24on the events which took place at the National Advanced Police School in Yaoundé.
28:30The National Advanced Police School in Yaoundé Monday welcomes the Spanish Ambassador to Cameroon
28:35and the Cameroon Police Force. On the other hand, Spain and Cameroon are cooperating
28:41to reinforce the skills of some staff in public security management.
28:45The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing training in public security maintenance
28:50is crucial. The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing training in public security
28:56maintenance is crucial. The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing training in public
29:02security maintenance is crucial. The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing training in public
29:07security maintenance is crucial. The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing training in public
29:15security maintenance is crucial. The 100 police staff retained for the ongoing two weeks training
29:20will receive practical lessons on modern techniques to contain situations of riots.
29:26They will also be trained on the Spanish police methods in tackling terrorism scenes.
29:33As a key actor in internal security, police staff have to master the techniques and practices of
29:40that is also the problem.
29:47Ignacio Gracia Lombreras, Spain's Ambassador to Cameroon, says
29:52through this partnership his country will also tap from the Cameroonian experience.
29:59In this developing story, the assassination case of the radio talk show journalist Martinez Zucco
30:04has been adjourned. The hearing, which is set for three weeks, was moved by the Chief Judge
30:09of the Yaoundé Military Courts, Kenelme Saint-Jean-et-Jacques, today. This came after
30:13debates on the rejection of exceptions on the violation of the law in the legal procedure.
30:19Kelly and Dan Diffons are through the hearing and our reports for the 730 News.
30:2517 accused persons in connection with the assassination of Martinez Zucco
30:30taken back to custody after the Yaoundé Military Court
30:33had exceptions from the Defense Council a second time.
30:37If you are arrested, searched and detained without a warrant or other legal process,
30:44does the State Council have the right to create them? We have 17 acts of violation of the law
30:50and the court cannot contradict this.
30:53The civil party holds that the law permits the hearings to continue as programmed.
30:58Normally, all those exceptions have to be joined to the main file, the main case.
31:08At the end of the day, when the judge will be passing his judgment, he will now first of all
31:13rule on the preliminary objections and then now go to the substance or the merit of the case.
31:21The defense again visited the disputed ordinance of December 1, 2023,
31:25purportedly according temporal freedom to their clients.
31:31The public prosecutor who wanted to deny the existence of a document
