00:00Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail
00:24and Peter.
00:28They lived with their mother in a sandbank, underneath the root of a very big fir tree.
00:37Now, my dears, said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, you may go into the fields or down the lane,
00:46but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden.
00:53Your father had an accident there, he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.
01:01Now run along, and don't get into mischief, I am going out.
01:09Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the woods to the
01:16baker's.
01:19She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.
01:27Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather
01:34blackberries.
01:37But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed
01:47under the gate.
01:51First he ate some lettuces and some French beans, and then he ate some radishes.
02:00And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.
02:09But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor?
02:19Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees, planting out young cabbages.
02:27But he jumped up and ran off to Peter, waving a rake and calling out,
02:35Stop, thief!
02:39Peter was most dreadfully frightened.
02:43He rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.
02:51He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
03:01After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have
03:08got away altogether, if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net and got caught by
03:16the large buttons on his jacket.
03:21It was a blue jacket, with brass buttons, quite new.
03:28Peter gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears.
03:36But his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great excitement,
03:45and implored him to exert himself.
03:50Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop up on the top of Peter.
03:58But Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him, and rushed into the
04:07toolshed and jumped into a can.
04:13It would have been a beautiful thing to hide in, if it had not had so much water in it.
04:23Mr. McGregor was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the toolshed, perhaps hidden
04:32underneath a flowerpot.
04:36He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each.
04:45Presently, Peter sneezed, KACHOO!
04:52Mr. McGregor was after him in no time, and tried to put his foot upon Peter, who jumped
05:00out of a window, upsetting three plants.
05:07The window was too small for Mr. McGregor, and he was tired of running after Peter.
05:15He went back to his work.
05:20Peter sat down to rest.
05:24He was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he had not the least idea which way to go.
05:34Also, he was very damp with sitting in that can.
05:43After a time, he began to wander about, going lippity-lippity, not very fast, and looking
05:52all around.
05:56He found a door in a wall, but it was locked, and there was no room for a fat little rabbit
06:04to squeeze underneath.
06:09An old mouse was running in and out, over the stone doorstep, carrying peas and beans
06:16to her family in the wood.
06:20Peter asked her the way to the gate, but she had such a large pea in her mouth that she
06:28could not answer.
06:30She only shook her head at him.
06:34Peter began to cry.
06:39Then he tried to find his way straight across the garden, but he became more and more puzzled.
06:48Presently, he came to a pond where Mr. McGregor filled his water cans.
06:59A white cat was staring at some goldfish.
07:04She sat very, very still, but now and then, the tip of her tail twitched as if it were
07:15alive.
07:19Peter thought it best to go away without speaking to her.
07:25He had heard about cats from his cousin, Little Benjamin Bunny.
07:33He went back towards the toolshed, but suddenly, quite close to him, he heard the noise of
07:42a hoe.
07:44Scritch, scratch, scratch, scratch.
07:52Peter scuttered underneath the bushes, but presently, as nothing had happened, he came
08:01out and climbed upon a wheelbarrow and peeped over.
08:09The first thing he saw was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions.
08:18His back was turned towards Peter, and beyond him was the gate.
08:27Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow and started running as fast as he could go
08:36along a straight walk behind some blackcurrant bushes.
08:42Mr. McGregor caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did not care.
08:50He slipped underneath the gate and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden.
09:01Mr. McGregor hung up the little jacket and shoes for a scarecrow to frighten the blackbirds.
09:11Peter never stopped running or looked behind him till he got home to the big fir tree.
09:22He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand off the floor of the rabbit
09:30hole and shut his eyes.
09:37His mother was busy cooking.
09:40She wondered what had happened to his clothes.
09:44It was the second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight.
09:52I am sorry to say that Peter was not very well during the evening.
10:00His mother put him to bed and made some chamomile tea, and she gave a dose of it to Peter.
10:10One tablespoon to be taken at bedtime.
10:15But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.
