00:00So I've spent some time trying, trying to understand this iPad.
00:06I've never been so confused by so many choices in one new product.
00:11So this is the new 10th generation baseline iPad, and it's in one of those bright new
00:16colors too.
00:17And this thing has a slightly new design, which is overall improved.
00:20The home button is gone.
00:22It's a pretty familiar rectangular shape now with flatter sides.
00:25The new colors are actually kind of saturated, which is neat.
00:28This one here is yellow, but there's also a pink and a blue on top of the safe bet
00:33silver.
00:34It's slightly less saturated than it looks on Apple's website though.
00:37There's a touch ID button up top.
00:39So you do get biometric unlocking, even though there's no home button, thinner bezels, thinner
00:43anyway, and a slightly larger 11 inch LCD screen up front, landscape stereo speakers,
00:50a bump from an eight to a 12 megapixel camera on the back and an A14 bionic chip inside.
00:56Not their newest, but it's a step up from the A13 bionic that's in the ninth gen iPad.
01:00So none of that is confusing.
01:01They're modernizing the baseline iPad.
01:04Great.
01:05But then that's, that's where some of the weirdness starts.
01:07So first of all, upgrades to USB type C. Finally, now it's not Thunderbolt speeds or anything,
01:13but Hey, you can now finally plug in USB-C flash drives.
01:17You can charge fast.
01:18You can even plug in an external display up to 4k 30 Hertz or 1080P 60 Hertz, which you
01:24were definitely not doing with a lightning port before.
01:28I'd been asking for USB-C, getting it in the base iPad now is great.
01:32It's confusing though, because they also announced that this iPad will support the first generation
01:39Apple pencil, which if you remember, uh, it's, it's lightning.
01:45This was the pencil that infamously hilariously plugged into the bottom of the old iPads to
01:50charge via that lightning port.
01:52But if we're USB-C now, then that means, Oh God, Oh no, it's, it's happening.
01:58This needs a USB-C to lightning adapter to charge the pencil.
02:04I'm sure no one will ever lose this.
02:06Uh, it also comes in this separate piece of packaging.
02:09It doesn't come in the iPad box or in the Apple pencil box.
02:12It's more packaging, which is a little more wasteful, but also, yeah, if you ever do lose
02:15it and need another one, nine bucks, but I'm still just thinking like Apple, you made a
02:20new pencil, a second gen pencil.
02:22That's way better.
02:23The second generation pencil snaps onto the side of the iPad air or the iPad pro with
02:27magnets and charges wirelessly.
02:31Where is that one here?
02:32I feel like I've been through every version of this in my head, but basically what I've
02:35come up with is some people would probably say that Apple knows that there are going
02:40to be groups of people, businesses, schools that have the older ninth generation iPad
02:47and they have pencils and they're going to want to continue using those pencils when
02:51they upgrade to this new iPad.
02:53That's why they kept support for the old Apple pencil.
02:58And to those people, I would say, but you make both, por que no los dos?
03:02Why not both?
03:03So honestly, the real answer is most likely because this is the first ever iPad to move
03:07the webcam to that long side, the long bezel, low key, that might be the best change in
03:13this whole piece of hardware.
03:14So now when you're on video calls or doing anything while looking at the camera, it'll
03:18actually look like you're looking at the camera instead of way off to the side, like in every
03:23other iPad.
03:24So this is a welcome change.
03:26But now that means the spot that you'd normally slap on the second generation Apple pencil
03:30with magnets and a cutout, well, that's now populated by webcam housing.
03:35And the other side has the smart pins, which I'll get to in a second.
03:38And then the top and the bottom are speakers.
03:40And apparently it would be too un-Apple like to put it like off to the side, you know,
03:43asymmetrical like that or something just to, just to have space for the cutouts.
03:47Basically, Apple also came out with their new M2 iPad pro at the same time as this,
03:52that also has a 12 megapixel ultra wide webcam with center stage, just like this one, but
03:57it's not moved to the long side.
04:00It's still on that side spot, which leads me to believe that Apple views this as a direct
04:04compromise.
04:05You can either have the new Apple pencil and that'll charge at the top, or you can have
04:10the webcam on the long side one or the other, but not both.
04:15And I guess we'll never see an iPad pro with the webcam in the right spot.
04:19So for those who want a little bit more out of the baseline iPad, Apple has also dropped
04:23a brand new, completely redesigned two piece magic keyboard folio for the iPad.
04:28I actually really liked most of it.
04:30This first piece is just like a back plate that attaches to the iPad with magnets and
04:34then acts as just a kickstand, basically very surface, very useful.
04:38And then with the second piece, it's just a new keyboard with a new full function row
04:43up at the top.
04:44So now that the smart connector pins are on the side edge, instead of the back, you can
04:48just slap on or remove the keyboard at any time and just go straight to the iPad.
04:53So this two piece setup has its benefits and drawbacks.
04:55The main drawback really being that it's not as lappable, it's much more suited for working
04:59on a desk or a more stable surface because of the weight distribution.
05:03But the benefit is it's two pieces, it's modular.
05:05So now you can just go straight kickstand if you want to just watch a movie or a show
05:09with no hands, or you can add a keyboard anytime you want to type.
05:13Or if you want, if you want to be mobile, but take the keyboard with you, you can flip
05:16the keyboard around so that you're not feeling those buttons on the back all the time, every
05:20time you're holding the thing.
05:22So that's nice.
05:23I like the idea.
05:24But there are still a couple of head scratchers.
05:25First of all, this new two piece setup is not coming to the new iPad Pro for some reason.
05:31I would think if you like those function keys, that you'd want that for the iPad Pro.
05:35But this is only for this iPad.
05:36But then also this iPad does not get stage manager.
05:40Not that stage manager is, you know, that amazing or anything.
05:43But this would have been nice for people who want to use that USB-C, plug it into an external
05:48monitor and get a little bit more window management, a little bit more of that multitasking going
05:53on.
05:54But this one won't do that.
05:55Weird.
05:56But then the biggest head scratcher of them all has got to be the prices, right?
06:00So this is still a $250 keyboard and case accessory.
06:07And then this new iPad here is starting at $450, which is a pretty big price bump from
06:13the 9th gen iPad we just upgraded from, which stays in Apple's lineup at $330 unchanged.
06:21This might be kind of a hot take, but I don't really understand why this one exists.
06:25Like, I'm not even saying it's a bad product.
06:26It's a perfectly good iPad.
06:28It works.
06:29It's got a couple of things.
06:30It's got the new chip.
06:31It's got the little things.
06:32It's got Wi-Fi 6 now.
06:33It's got a perfectly fine display.
06:35It's got USB-C, the new colors.
06:37It's thin.
06:38It's a tablet.
06:39It's fine.
06:40I just...
06:41It's weird.
06:42Like, if you just want a basic iPad, this person still exists, right?
06:45Oh, I just want to get a basic iPad.
06:47That's the schools, the businesses.
06:49That's the moms getting it to like put it in a giant foam case and like hand it to their
06:53kid to watch videos.
06:54Like, I just need an iPad.
06:57That's still the $329 ninth-gen iPad.
07:00It's a hundred something dollars cheaper.
07:01It's a better deal.
07:03That's still the one I would recommend for those people.
07:05But then the second you think like, ooh, I might want a little bit more from my iPad.
07:10I want to do a little more, right?
07:11Maybe I want to like use it as a pseudo computer a little bit.
07:15The second you think, oh, I want it to be a real computer.
07:18This is 64 gigs at the baseline in 2022, not real computer storage.
07:23So you bump up to real computer storage.
07:25And then this plus this is $850.
07:29What?
07:30I mean, you could get an iPad air for that price.
07:35You could get an iPad pro for that price.
07:38You could also just get a computer for that price.
07:41So this is a strange combination of things to exist together for that amount of money.
07:47Like even without the keyboard, this iPad 64 gigs in 2022 for $450 is just, it's just
07:54weird.
07:55So in conclusion, this is a slightly strange set of stuff slotted between sweet and simple.
08:04Sufficient for some, but pretty silly for most.
08:09Thanks for watching.
