00:00All right, what's up? MKBHD here, and today was Google's I.O., their annual developer conference.
00:07And usually we don't see a ton of hardware at events like this, but this one, for whatever reason,
00:13we got a ton of hardware, or at least hardware announcements.
00:17So there's kind of three levels of announcements going on here.
00:20So first of all, there's the right around the corner, coming up next stuff.
00:24That's two things, and they're going to be going on sale in the next month or so.
00:28Then there's the later this year section.
00:31So we did get a bit of a sneak preview at some more fall hardware,
00:35some stuff that we're actually going to get fully unveiled later this year.
00:38And then there's the on the horizon section, which is,
00:42they went ahead and pre-announced a piece of 2023 hardware for some reason.
00:49But we'll get to that.
00:50But first of all, in the next up section, Pixel 6a and Pixel Buds Pro.
00:55These are both things that we kind of knew were coming,
00:57but now we're finally getting all the details of these announcements.
01:00So for the Pixel 6a, it is essentially a slightly smaller, slightly bumped down Pixel 6,
01:06and it will retail for $449.
01:09So honestly, from what we can tell here, the 6a will be very similar to the Pixel 6.
01:14You can see the design, same camera bar, same glass, same software,
01:18with all the material you and live captions and speech recognition and camera features.
01:23And it's powered by the same exact tensor chip from the flagship Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.
01:28But, you know, those phones are going on past six months old now,
01:31so you can imagine the price of manufacturing some of those parts is starting to go down.
01:34But the real main difference between the Pixel 6a and the Pixel 6, which is $599,
01:41is the display and cameras, which is really interesting.
01:45So for the display, it is smaller a little bit.
01:48The more premium pixels are both pretty big.
01:50This will have a 6.1 inch, 1080p, 60 hertz, G OLED display,
01:56which is still big, but it's now the smallest pixel.
01:59So then cameras are the other interesting thing.
02:01So now Google telling us that cameras are one of the areas where they saved costs from the Pixel 6
02:07means that, yeah, okay, this a is going to have cheaper cameras than the Pixel 6,
02:12which worried me at first.
02:14So it is still a standard and an ultra-wide,
02:17and you can kind of see a slightly new visual design in the camera bar,
02:20which I'll touch on more in a second.
02:22But on the spec sheet, it actually tells us it is the Sony IMX363.
02:26That's the sensor for the main camera,
02:29which is actually the same 12 megapixel sensor that we've seen in some of those older pixels,
02:34Pixel 4, Pixel 3, Pixel 2.
02:37This is a tried and true older sensor.
02:40So cheaper, yes, but also probably not bad.
02:44But other things like materials and battery appear to be about the same,
02:48although do definitely have to test that stuff.
02:50I would suggest getting subscribed to see that review video when it comes out here.
02:54Battery could be an interesting one
02:56because this is the smallest lowest refresh rate display in any pixel,
03:00but it still has the same tensor chip.
03:03So we'll see how that gets handled.
03:04Could be amazing.
03:05But the other specs I can confirm are 6 gigs of RAM and 128 gigs of storage,
03:10IP67 water resistance.
03:12It does have an in-display fingerprint reader.
03:14There's a 4,400 milliamp hour battery with 18 watt charging,
03:18but there is no mention of wireless charging.
03:20And then sub-6 5G and millimeter wave 5G with specific models
03:24and five years of Android security updates.
03:27So that's the Pixel 6a and that's the new budget smartphone,
03:31but it's launching alongside a new high-end set of earbuds from Google,
03:35Pixel Buds Pro.
03:36So if we have Pixel Buds A series,
03:39I looked on Google store.
03:40That's actually the only one they're selling right now.
03:42So the A series for a hundred bucks is like regular AirPods basically.
03:46And then Pixel Buds Pro for 200 bucks would be sort of equivalent to AirPods Pro.
03:51So this is a $199 noise canceling pair of wireless earbuds.
03:56They do have a transparency mode.
03:58They'll have multi-device connectivity compatible with Android,
04:01iOS and computers, Google assistance built-in.
04:04They have IPX4 sweat resistance.
04:07And overall the design, I'm going to say it looks pretty tame.
04:10You know, you can see the mics.
04:12Each earbud has three microphones.
04:13You've got the silicon tips in front of an 11 millimeter driver.
04:17And the case looks basically the same as the original Pixel Buds
04:21with the black and white design and the magnet and wireless charging.
04:24The quoted battery life is 11 hours of listening
04:27or seven hours with active noise cancellation turned on.
04:30Basically, I feel like the differentiating factor with these,
04:33especially when we get them and listen to how they sound
04:35is going to come from the six core audio chip on board,
04:38which also apparently will have a lot to do with the noise cancellation,
04:41the transparency mode and just overall the way they sound.
04:44Now I've been waiting a long time for a pair of earbuds
04:47with noise cancellation and a transparency mode that rivals AirPods.
04:51AirPods still to this day have far and away the best transparency mode
04:56I've ever heard in any pair of headphones.
04:58So I'm looking forward to maybe Pixel Buds
05:00stepping their game up in that dimension.
05:02It's just one part of headphones.
05:05But yeah, the competition has a lot of other things going for them.
05:08So we'll see how the Pixel Buds stack up.
05:10But yeah, that's what's up next.
05:11That's the stuff that'll be on sale this summer.
05:13But then Google went ahead and gave us a little bit of a preview
05:16of some stuff that's coming up this fall,
05:18including a full design reveal of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
05:23and a new Pixel Watch, finally.
05:27So this is our limited first look at the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.
05:33So the details, of course, are way more confined with this stuff,
05:36but you can see the new colors here
05:38and you can also see a bit more of that camera design
05:41and super bold big camera circles and the camera bar.
05:45And an extra detail is we also know that that glass is soft touch,
05:49which I am very excited about.
05:50So it's sort of gone back and forth on soft touch,
05:52but if you remember the Pixel 3s with the soft touch glass,
05:55I remember I really liked that back of a phone finish.
05:59If it's anything like that, I'm very excited about it.
06:02And seeing as there is a black 7 Pro at the bottom,
06:05I'm thinking that's probably going to end up being the one I prefer.
06:09Although Matt White typically does a great job hiding fingerprints,
06:13so we'll see.
06:14This phone will have the next generation Tensor chip
06:17and it will launch with Android 13,
06:19but that's pretty much all we know at this point.
06:22So yeah, new phone coming out this fall,
06:24Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, new chip, new colors, new matte finish.
06:29And then, yeah.
06:31I guess we can also technically see it still has a port at the bottom
06:34and it definitely has speakers.
06:35All the classic stuff.
06:36Some new colors.
06:37I'm not sure how I feel about this gray with the green undertone,
06:42but it does contrast well with the gold.
06:44But probably the more interesting preview we got
06:46is the one of the new Pixel Watch.
06:50They're finally doing it.
06:51This fall, we're going to have, I mean,
06:53theoretically maybe a competitor to the Apple Watch,
06:56but sort of in the Android world.
06:58I've been waiting for this for a long time.
07:00It's a sort of a result of their collaboration,
07:03or I guess purchase of Fitbit.
07:05And this is it.
07:07This is the Pixel Watch.
07:10So, okay.
07:11It's a circular stainless steel design
07:13and it is a very simple silhouette, as you can see.
07:16Not a whole lot to set it apart on the outside,
07:18but I do like that it is simple
07:20and it has what they're calling a tactile crown for input,
07:23though it's also a touchscreen.
07:25And it has interchangeable bands and it runs Wear OS.
07:29This is the Pixel Watch that we've been,
07:32I mean, hearing so much about for so long and waiting for.
07:35It's clearly got some solid bezels all the way around.
07:38I mean, that's the first thing I noticed when the screen is on.
07:41And I guess I'm judging just by eyeballing these lifestyle photos,
07:44but it looks like it's about the same size
07:47as the smaller Apple Watch.
07:50I'm thinking maybe around 40 millimeters.
07:52There isn't any mention of two different sizes,
07:54like a small and a large.
07:56I think it would make sense, but they didn't say.
07:58Basically, that's all we really know know about the new Pixel Watch.
08:01Again, this is something that we're going to get way more details on
08:04when it actually does get fully unveiled in October,
08:07whenever their event is.
08:09But there are a bunch of things that I'm also hoping for.
08:12Like I'm hoping it has a bright, efficient, crispy OLED display.
08:16You know, this UI they're showing has a lot of black
08:19and the black bezel clearly goes all the way around.
08:22So I'm hoping that it's an OLED
08:24so it can sort of seamlessly blend into the bezel
08:26instead of being really obvious and ugly like a cheaper LCD.
08:30I'm also, of course, hoping for good battery life,
08:34at least a full day.
08:36And if it's going to be a premium price,
08:38I'm also hoping it has things like good haptics and good performance.
08:41These animations of the UI showing smart home controls
08:44and checking notifications, like, it's cool.
08:46But again, I definitely want to play with it myself.
08:49One thing to note, though, is this is basically going to act like a Fitbit.
08:52Like it seems like most of the fitness tracking
08:54and sleep tracking and stuff like that,
08:56you need the Fitbit app to work for.
08:59So it's going to act just like a Fitbit in that way.
09:02And then Wear OS is going to work the way you typically expect it to,
09:06paired with an Android phone.
09:07And then they've said there will be a cellular option.
09:09So the watch can work without the phone
09:12and it'll do activity and sleep tracking and stuff like that through Fitbit.
09:16And also it appears this will just be working specifically with Android phones,
09:19probably best with the Pixel, but with Android phones and not the iPhone.
09:23Because in classic Apple fashion,
09:25lots of the stuff that the Apple watch can do,
09:27no other smartwatch has access to.
09:29So this is very much an Android smartwatch.
09:32So yeah, stay tuned for more details on that later.
09:34But yeah, then last but not least,
09:36this was the announcement we got basically zero information on,
09:39but Google did officially say
09:41that they're going to be dropping a Pixel tablet in 2023.
09:47That's what they've told us.
09:49That's kind of all we know.
09:50We don't know any of the specs.
09:51We don't know what time of year it'll come out.
09:53We don't know what it'll even really be called.
09:55Technically, we do know it will be on the larger side and on the premium side.
10:00So I'm thinking like iPad Air to iPad Pro type price range and equivalent,
10:06but it feels like they're not really committing to anything else yet
10:10as far as the tablet goes.
10:11I guess visually, basically,
10:12we just have this shot of the Pixel portfolio
10:14where we can see that there is a tablet
10:16and it'll definitely have a camera and speakers
10:20and presumably a screen on the other side.
10:22But yeah, that's it.
10:23It's really interesting that they're deciding to show off some of this stuff so early.
10:27It kind of reminds me on one hand of Sony
10:30who will announce a phone early in the year
10:33and then six months later,
10:34it'll finally come out and all the hype is gone and everybody forgot about it.
10:37But on the other hand,
10:38this is Google we're talking about
10:40and they've always been leaking things constantly.
10:43I mean, they try to get ahead of the leaks.
10:45This feels like them just going,
10:46hey, you know what?
10:47Instead of the phone leaking for the next six months,
10:49we'll just tell people about it and take advantage of that
10:52because otherwise you just lose the hype and your own messaging.
10:56So yeah, let me know what you think is the most exciting
10:58or what you're looking forward to the most of this new Google stuff.
11:01I'm definitely interested in the watch actually.
11:04I want to see what that's like on the wrist and to actually use,
11:07but let me know in the comment section below.
11:09We'll talk about it.
11:10But yeah, that's been it.
11:11Thanks for watching.
11:12Also random shout out,
11:13but the iPod was officially discontinued this week.
11:18Probably one of the products everyone watching this video
11:21has at some point owned some version of.
11:23So RIP.
11:25Press F in the chat to pay respects.
11:28All right.
11:29Catch you guys in the next one.
11:30Peace.
