00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here, and you might not know this, but the OnePlus 10 Pro is out.
00:09Kinda.
00:10OnePlus has been on a kind of a weird trajectory lately, and I've kind of already talked about
00:14it, but this is the latest, weirdest step.
00:18So I say it's kinda out because, well, you're watching this video on YouTube, which is not
00:22in China, but this phone is officially landed and launched only in China.
00:26So it's not out where you're watching this, but we'll likely see an international launch
00:30at some point this year for this phone.
00:32So I was able to get my hands on this one thanks to our friends at dbrand, but if you
00:35wanted to get one, you have to import it from a site like 28mobile or something like that.
00:40But even so, the software that this phone is running is not the Oxygen OS that OnePlus
00:45fans have come to know and love in many regions.
00:48So basically, this phone might have a OnePlus box, and the OnePlus logo, and a OnePlus Red
00:54cable, but this OnePlus 10 Pro is more like an Oppo phone than ever before.
01:00Now, you might have seen all the specs and teasers and stuff about this phone as they
01:03were coming up to their launch, and I'll get to all that in a second.
01:06But the biggest thing to note really is that this phone, this one right here, is literally
01:11running Oppo software.
01:13So it has ColorOS, the same ColorOS that an Oppo phone would have.
01:17This is ColorOS 12.1, so the Oxygen OS that's been so important to OnePlus for years, that
01:24they've really liked in the past, is not here.
01:26So you've got some Oppo-built stock apps, and it's got a bunch of incomplete menus
01:30that don't have English translations.
01:32There's a bunch of pre-installed Chinese apps that can't be disabled.
01:35This is clearly not meant to be exported to other regions.
01:38The default browser's pretty rough.
01:40I mean, it's mostly fine, and it does have a lot of customization features.
01:43I think the wallpaper color picker is super cool, and I've gotten Google Apps to work
01:49other than the Assistant, so I can make my way around, but it's not ideal.
01:52So sort of overhanging all of this is, okay, will this phone have Oxygen OS or not when
01:58it eventually probably launches internationally?
02:01I don't know.
02:02It's unconfirmed.
02:03We don't have an answer yet.
02:04And even though it's not perfect, and honestly, Oxygen OS is more like ColorOS than ever
02:09before in its latest version, I still am kind of hoping for it, because it's more complete.
02:13Anyway, the one thing that will be the same no matter where you get this phone in any
02:17region is this new design, this slightly controversial new design.
02:24It's kind of a mixed bag for me.
02:25I like parts of it.
02:26I don't like some other parts of it.
02:27So there's always a difference between seeing it in the renders and the teasers versus actually
02:30holding it and feeling it in person.
02:32And I got to say, in person, it's a pretty solid design.
02:34It's a nice size, roughly the same size as the last year's OnePlus 9 Pro, big, but not
02:39too big.
02:40It's got the same smooth satin black finish in this volcanic black color, and the other
02:44version is this sort of emerald green type of satin finish, and it's still got all the
02:48classic OnePlus shapes and cues, the centered logo on the middle of the back, the speaker
02:54and SIM card tray at the bottom, the alert slider, which has just moved up a little bit
02:58higher on the phone.
02:59Really, the biggest change with this new design is the camera layout.
03:04So clearly, there's a bit of inspiration from what Samsung did with the S21 series, a little
03:09bit of a copy my homework, but don't make it too obvious going on here.
03:13But I do still like Samsung's version more because it still feels more intentional.
03:16One, because it goes all the way up to the corner and it feels like a more integrated
03:20part of the design.
03:22And two, because of this seam here.
03:24So OnePlus has this awesome satin black and the whole back and all the rails around the
03:29phone are satin, but then it cuts at this seam to do a glossy camera array.
03:33And I know we've done the stovetop joke about other phones before, but I mean, this one,
03:37this one looks more like a stovetop than any I've ever seen.
03:40It's actually only three cameras though.
03:42The fourth in the corner is a bi-color LED flash with some text in the middle that says
03:48P2D 50T.
03:49Now, if you're wondering what P2D 50T actually stands for, I asked OnePlus because, I mean,
03:56there's not a whole lot of other text on the phone.
03:58Why did they put this here?
03:59Apparently, P stands for phone, 2D stands for second generation Hasselblad mobile camera
04:07system.
04:0850T stands for 50 megapixel triple camera setup.
04:15So P2D 50T, which is printed.
04:20Okay.
04:22I don't see a specific IP rating anywhere for this phone, but it does have the rubber
04:25seals around things like the SIM card tray, which the IP68 certified OnePlus 9 Pro also
04:31had.
04:32So I'm thinking it'll also survive normal splashes and stuff.
04:34But the only other update on the outside is a small one.
04:37It's the new display, same size at 6.7 inches with the top left corner, selfie camera cutout
04:43and an optical fingerprint sensor that's nicely higher up on the phone.
04:47I was wondering why last year's is so low and I never really got an answer, but this
04:50one is in a nicer spot for sure.
04:52Anyway, it's the same resolution, 1440p, same max frame rate, 120 Hertz, but this is an
04:59LTPO 2 panel, meaning it can modulate all the way down to 1 Hertz instead of 10 Hertz.
05:05So it can save even more power than earlier LTPO displays.
05:10Definitely looking forward to seeing pretty much every high-end phone make this same upgrade
05:14this year.
05:15Then inside this phone does have pretty much all of the high-end specs that you'd expect
05:18from a OnePlus flagship phone.
05:22Now this isn't the full review.
05:23I'm not daily driving this phone because half the software is in Chinese and it's kind of
05:27hard for me to do that.
05:28But this does give us a pretty good idea of how it'll perform.
05:30And I mean, with high-end specs, there aren't really any surprises here.
05:34It's got the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, new naming scheme for the new generation of 4
05:39nanometer chips.
05:41First phone I've tested with it.
05:42It's very similar in performance to the Snapdragon 888 with a bump in the GPU department and
05:47most significantly better AI and ML performance.
05:50So you can imagine as the highest end non-custom silicon chip you can get in a phone combined
05:55with the high refresh rate display, UFS 3.1 storage, LPDDR5 RAM.
06:01It's going to perform very well.
06:02There's even a RAM extender feature that you can use so you can sort of carve out some
06:07of that fast storage to act like extra RAM if you want to.
06:11Basically, I have thought for a few years actually that Oppo's Color OS has some of
06:15the better animations of any Android skin.
06:18And that's still true.
06:19So things are very smooth and responsive here across the board.
06:21And then the bonus is some slightly better gaming performance and a new image signal
06:25processor which should improve the cameras.
06:28Which speaking of the cameras, how are they, right?
06:31This is a new, I mean the design very much highlights these new cameras and the Hasselblad
06:36logo is right there.
06:37So does it deliver?
06:38Well, basically the camera housing might've gotten a redesign, but the actual camera system
06:43is almost the same as last year.
06:45So it's the same 48 megapixel main camera, the same 8 megapixel 3.3X telephoto camera
06:51as last year, and a new 150 degree ultra wide.
06:56So the new second generation Hasselblad mobile camera system is, as far as we can tell, the
07:02same mobile camera system plus a new ultra wide.
07:05Unclear if there's any new lenses or anything going into the hardware, but that's what we
07:10get.
07:11Okay, got it.
07:12So my initial impression shooting with it are the actual quality of the images is still
07:15pretty good.
07:16I mean, we know what this main camera is capable of, which is some pretty nice shots and daytime
07:20lighting, plus the larger sensor giving real shallow depth of field, plus a little fringing
07:24with some closeup subjects, but that's not a surprise here.
07:27But whatever is in focus in the middle of the frame or near the middle of the frame
07:31gets pretty good detail and sharpness and it looks fine.
07:33I was looking for some new like color science maybe, maybe the second generation Hasselblad
07:38stuff has more to do with image processing and colors and dynamic range I think are
07:43still good, not too over-processed, but nothing dramatically better than expected here.
07:48The colors from the ultra wide are definitely a bit different from the primary camera and
07:51it's definitely not as sharp, but that can improve a bit with software updates.
07:56I just found the shutter speed not very fast.
07:59So you got to really hold still and take photos of still subjects, but hey, not all subjects
08:05stay still.
08:06So in my initial testing, like object photos and still scenes are no problem, but people
08:10and pets get a little more blurred sometimes, especially in lower light.
08:14The selfie camera though is actually new, 32 megapixels, not super wide and not really
08:20noteworthy in the quality department in my opinion, but hey, y'all want to know about
08:23the selfie camera, so there you go.
08:25This Hasselblad partnership is more than just image quality though.
08:28It's also about features.
08:30And so the new ultra wide is a new feature and you know, if you just open the camera
08:34and just switch to the ultra wide, it'll look exactly the same as any other, but buried
08:39in the settings.
08:40There is a 150 degree ultra wide mode that lets you get really, really wide and take
08:46advantage of that new sensor and lenses.
08:48It does a pretty good job, not distorting things too much considering how wide it is,
08:52which is very impressive at this angle.
08:54So even if the photos aren't super sharp, they're still unique and pretty impressive.
08:59And then you can hit this button and get in that full on all the way fisheye circle image
09:03mode to capture everything.
09:05No video capture in this mode.
09:07I think that would have been cool, like sort of reminiscent of old skate videos, but yeah,
09:11this is pretty sweet.
09:12There's also the Hasselblad X-Pan mode to shoot in that 65 by 24 aspect ratio, reminiscent
09:17of a classic Hasselblad camera.
09:19And there's a new pro mode with some raw formats, which is great and a new long exposure mode.
09:24Cool.
09:25But overall, as you can tell, you know, not a huge difference in the camera department.
09:28Basically, if you weren't sold on last year's phone, then this one's not going to change
09:32your mind.
09:33But I think I can wrap this up with one thing that did improve dramatically.
09:36And that is the battery.
09:38So without getting much thicker or bigger, this phone is now packing a 5,000 milliamp
09:43hour battery and upgrades to 80 watt wired charging plus 50 watt wireless charging,
09:50which is sick.
09:51So usually you get, you know, a huge battery, but not so fast charging or a medium sized
09:57battery, but with ultra fast charging, it's sort of like pick and choose.
10:00This is really impressive.
10:01This is basically combining the best of both worlds.
10:04So from a low battery, you can add about 60% charge in 15 minutes, which on such a
10:09big battery can last you an entire new day.
10:11And even if you don't have a heavy day of use, you know, I haven't really used this
10:14phone for very long, but you can already tell this bigger battery combined with the LTPO2
10:20display is going to reward lighter usage days with a much longer screen on time.
10:25I feel like there's something different about this charger though.
10:27I mean, this is the old one.
10:29It's a little more squared off.
10:32It's still got the red cable.
10:33It's still the same size.
10:35Oh, right.
10:37It's an Oppo charger.
10:38So as part of the melting of the Oppo and OnePlus brands, the Oppofication of OnePlus,
10:46as we've talked about, yeah, they switched literally to a SuperVOOC charger.
10:50It says it on their site.
10:51That's the name of Oppo's fast charging tech.
10:54It's no longer a warp charger that OnePlus used to ship with everything.
10:57Now, honestly, the name of the charging tech doesn't really bother me that much, but the
11:00most annoying part is it's switched back to USB-A.
11:04This is a USB-A charger now.
11:05All of these warp chargers were USB-C.
11:09And so now we've gone back.
11:10So I can't use USB-C to USB-C cables anymore.
11:13I have to use this cable.
11:15So this is annoyingly backwards.
11:16I mean, the fact that the phone does come with a charger in the box is sadly like bonus
11:21points for this phone.
11:22That's what you have to do when 80 watt charging is one of your features is nobody has an 80
11:25watt charger.
11:26So you have to throw it in.
11:27But yeah, here you go.
11:29It's a USB-A charger.
11:30Also, if you want to do that 50 watt Air VOOC wireless charging, that is a separate extra
11:36Oppo wireless charger.
11:38Still a super impressive battery though.
11:39And you know what else is super impressive?
11:42Channel sponsor Cash App.
11:43So Cash App is impressive, not just because it's the best way to send, spend and save
11:47money, but also it comes with a debit card that you can fully customize.
11:51And then Cash App will laser print and mail it to you, whatever your fancy design.
11:57And the card comes with free discounts to places you love called Boosts.
12:00So you're definitely going to want to check out Cash App if you haven't already.
12:02The link is below.
12:03You can use code Marques for $15 and $10 will go to Girls Who Code.
12:08Appreciate you Cash App.
12:09So almost exactly one year ago today, it was January last year, I did a what happened to
12:15OnePlus video.
12:17And I was basically talking, I'll link it below.
12:18It's just talking about how they went from a very enthusiast focused company to a very
12:25normal company making normal phones.
12:27It didn't really stand out in quite the same way.
12:30And this is their most normal phone yet.
12:33Now that doesn't mean it's a bad phone at all.
12:36It's actually quite good.
12:37And lots of the stuff that I've always liked about OnePlus phones are still here.
12:41It's got the fast and smooth stuff.
12:43It's got the high refresh rate display, great performance and high-end specs, really, really
12:48fast charging on a massive new battery.
12:50And of course, decent cameras.
12:52It's still got the alert slider, great haptics.
12:55So it's got a lot of good stuff, but we don't have an international launch.
12:58So therefore, we don't have a real price for this phone yet.
13:01So I got to withhold any of my official review type judgment until then, like if it ends
13:07up being seven, eight, $900, which is probably about where it'll land, I could see it being
13:12pretty reasonable, but anything higher than that, it's competing with the big dogs.
13:17And I think anything lower than that would be a surprise.
13:19So let me know, would you want a phone like this, the OnePlus 10 Pro?
13:23Thanks for watching.
13:24Catch you guys in the next one.
13:25Peace.
