00:27Je veux dire, ça a l'air assez violent.

02:25Like I got hands-on time with the new M2 MacBook Air that's about to come out next month, right?
02:29The Air has a larger display with thinner bezels, and in that notch, there's a new 1080p
02:35webcam instead of a six-year-old 720p webcam.
02:38It has MagSafe with a color-matching cable, which enables fast charging and essentially
02:43frees up an extra port, since that's one more USB-C port that you're not plugged into.
02:47And it's all in a package that's thinner, weighs less, and is basically the same price.
02:52So why would you buy this MacBook Pro?
02:55How is it even Pro anymore?
02:56You know what?
02:57That's a good question.
02:58Why would you buy this Pro?
03:01The answer, I think, first of all, is it is the cheapest Pro in the lineup.
03:04Technically, it's true.
03:06But really, the reason you get this over the Air is the thicker chassis supports active
03:10cooling, so it's got a fan and all the benefits that come with that.
03:14I mean, the benchmarks are in, and to the surprise of absolutely no one, it's pretty
03:18clear that this M2 chip is awesome.
03:20It's living up to the 10-20% better multi-core CPU performance, and even more impressively,
03:26the two extra GPU cores over M1 is giving it 30-40% better GPU performance, which is
03:32basically the only area where you could say M1 was lacking.
03:36So this is awesome for any applications that lean on the GPU.
03:40Everything's faster.
03:41Final Cut is faster.
03:42Premiere is faster.
03:43Any games you might play are all faster.
03:45And the cherry on top is it has a dramatically improved media engine, same one from the higher-end
03:50chips, actually.
03:51So you can actually pull off some heavier Final Cut Pro edits.
03:53So for something like that, where you're in a program for hours and things are getting
03:56hot, okay, that's when you'd need the fans to kick in, keep performance high, longer
04:01than the MacBook Air ever could.
04:02No throttling.
04:03So if you've got the sustained workloads and the long performance stuff, you should get
04:07the M2 MacBook Pro.
04:08No, no.
04:09Those people should just go straight to the 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro.
04:14Just go straight to the big brother.
04:15Look, if you know you're going to be doing workloads and things that the MacBook Air can't
04:19handle, then you should just go to the actually pro laptop, the upgraded machine.
04:25If you're going to get a nice laptop and you want to do extra performance stuff on
04:28it, you weren't going to get the baseline MacBook Pro, right?
04:31You were going to bump it up, first of all, because you want at least 16 gigs of memory,
04:35right?
04:36And second of all, because the 256 gigs of baseline pro storage is kind of insulting.
04:41And that version has particularly clipped SSD performance, worse than even the M1 MacBook
04:46Pro.
04:47So if you go to one terabyte and 16 gigs, you're already looking at like $1,900 for
04:53this machine.
04:54At that point, just get the 14-inch Pro because that laptop is on another level of performance.
04:59I mean, don't get me wrong.
05:01It's absolutely awesome to see the jump from M1 to M2, and that's going to enable a ton
05:06more great stuff for the most popular laptop for the everyday baseline users.
05:11But if you zoom out, there's still a big difference in performance when moving up to the higher
05:15end chips, M1 Pro and then M1 Max.
05:19The amount of additional performance you get for the extra $200 to $300 is massive.
05:23If that's what you really want, that's what you should get.
05:26Plus, you get a much better, brighter mini LED high refresh rate screen too.
05:31And the webcam and the notch is way better, much better speakers, and you actually get
05:35some ports while you're at it.
05:36So I just, I don't know, you shouldn't get a literal worst version of all of those things.
05:41I mean, $200 to $300 isn't nothing.
05:44I mean, it's not zero, but like, I don't know, really squeezes this new MacBook Pro
05:50quite a bit.
05:51And plus, you can't get around the fact that it's literally worse at all those things.
05:54I think you're forgetting something.
05:56Oh, really?
05:57The MacBook Pro has studio quality microphones while the MacBook Air does not.
06:02Um, I mean, so technically, they both are listed as having triple microphone arrays
06:08with beamforming.
06:09It's just Apple chose to call the one in the MacBook Pro studio quality.
06:13It might have a slight difference, but really, are you going to pay extra for that and then
06:16sacrifice all this other stuff?
06:18Okay.
06:19I think there is one redeeming factor.
06:22And what is that?
06:23Battery.
06:24The MacBook Pro has surprisingly excellent battery life, better than I think pretty much
06:29all of us expected.
06:30We saw the 20 hours of video playback quoted on stage, but in real world use, this might
06:34be the best battery life in any modern laptop we've ever seen.
06:39There's people out here getting 16 to 20 hours of actual real world use.
06:44The Verge's laptop reviewer, Monica, wrote a hilarious piece about how long it took
06:48her to run down a battery.
06:49And across the board, it's a tremendously long performer.
06:52So if you want the best battery in any laptop, get this one.
06:56Okay.
06:57So that is awesome to see.
06:58Uh, but at the same time, those other laptops already have great battery life too.
07:02So you're not trying to spend just to get a slightly better battery and then sacrifice
07:08all those other things we talked about.
07:10It's really quite a small difference.
07:12Uh, so the ideal customer for this new MacBook Pro M2 is somebody who just needs a slightly
07:20better sustained performance than the new MacBook Air and is willing to sacrifice screen
07:27size, webcam, speakers, ports, thickness, and weight to get it.
07:33Or someone who is literally about to buy the 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro.
07:37Enterprise.
07:38Yep.
07:39Enterprise.
07:40That's it.
