00:00Gemma Integrated News visited Pag-asa Island in West Philippine Sea
00:04to find out the situation of some of our fellow Filipinos there.
00:08Our team saw the sacrifices of the teachers who are teaching the children there.
00:13The first news is from Darlene Cai.
00:25After class, the students of Pag-asa Island went home.
00:29But some of the students of Pag-asa Island are not on vacation here.
00:35Teacher Michelle is still working hard to prepare for tomorrow's class.
00:40After that, she will prepare her bed.
00:44Here in the classroom, Teacher Michelle has been living for 44 years.
00:49Behind the blackboard is a tent where she sleeps at night.
00:54Teacher Michelle is from Quezon, Palawan.
00:56She did not expect that this would be their situation when they arrived at Pag-asa Island.
01:02I was dismayed.
01:04But at that time, I had no choice.
01:08I had to adapt to what's here on the island because it's far from the mainland.
01:15Even with the boat, we were having a hard time.
01:18I wanted to get off the boat.
01:20But you can't because you're already in the middle.
01:23So I just had to go.
01:25It didn't take long for Teacher Michelle to adjust.
01:28Somehow, she became comfortable in the bed inside her tent.
01:32It's hard because I used to sleep on the bed.
01:35Now, I just sleep on the bed.
01:37But later on, after a month, I got used to it.
01:45Teacher Ayan is 34 years old.
01:48She also set up her bed in the supply room of their classroom.
01:52When we arrived here, we were provided a place to stay.
01:57But we were crowded because at that time, there were six of us in one house.
02:02So we just adjusted until we arrived here.
02:08It's hard for them whenever it rains because the water enters the room.
02:12When it rains, the wind is strong and the water enters the window.
02:17So that's our experience.
02:20We use water to dry our clothes.
02:25The local government of Kalayaan, Palawan admitted that
02:29the teachers in Isla Nang Pag-asa do not have sufficient accommodation.
02:33The comfort that they don't have now
02:40because of the sudden increase in the number of teachers,
02:45the LGU did not prepare their accommodation.
02:51At present, there are 14 teachers teaching in Pag-asa Island.
02:56Despite everything,
02:58Teacher Michelle, Teacher Ayan, and all the teachers in Pag-asa continue to strive and teach.
03:04When I see that they are okay, that they are learning,
03:09my family also hopes that I am okay here.
03:16So I need to be strong inside.
03:19I just hope that we will have a comfortable staff house.
03:25I also hope that we will have transportation because it's hard for us.
03:33GMA Integrated News is still waiting for the statement of the Department of Education about this.
03:38Although the situation is not perfect for the teachers we talked to here,
03:42they still have the heart to help the students of Pag-asa Island.
