However, she achieved fame with the character of Mary Ann Summers, the characterization of the girl next door in the CBS TV series Gilligan's Island between 1964 and '67, based on the adventures of a group of castaways lost on an island in the Pacific Ocean. After more than ten years, she returned to play Mary Ann for the animated spin-offs and in television films dedicated to the original series. She wrote the book "A Guide to Life. What would Mary Ann do?" with Steve Stinson (2014). She acted in the theater in different comedies and musicals. Dawn Wells died at the age of 82 on December 30, 2020 due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
