00:00It looks like somebody's desperately seeking Xena. Here's your spooky spot on
00:04the Playmates, the Simpsons interactive playset of The Collector's Lair.
00:30Welcome to Springfield, USA, the town that put fun in dysfunctional. Whether enjoying
00:49the shotgun sociability of Most Havern, the creamed cornsicle at Springfield Retirement
00:54Castle, the gene-altering radiance of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, or the warm
00:58perspiration of Quickie Mart heat lamp dog, you'll always feel special in Springfield,
01:03the town America calls shabby. So please visit us here in Springfield where compared to us,
01:09you're royalty. I think perhaps the radiation is starting to affect yours truly as well.
01:15I had a memory lapse thinking I had already opened up the set a few years ago when the
01:18fact that I had to cut the twist ties, we all know otherwise. While I should be checking
01:22my brain, let's check first the tape measure and see how tall each of the individual's
01:26figures stand. And then of course, I'll be bringing in some of the other examples
01:29from earlier Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors so you can see how they all mingle with one
01:33another. First, let's go to The Collector who doesn't mingle all that well with others.
01:38The Collector is going to stand at five inches in height, or he's going to be about 12 and
01:43a half centimeters tall. Then to Lucy Lawless, who is the only celebrity that's made an appearance
01:47in the Treehouse of Horror interactive world. She actually is going to stand at about four
01:52and three quarters of an inch, or about 12 centimeters tall. Then on to Stretch Boy.
01:57He's going to be three and a half inches in height, or about, I would say, eight and a
02:01half centimeters tall. And then to Clobber Girl, she is going to be three inches and
02:06about seven and a half centimeters tall. Speaking of memory lapses, I call Bart Stretch Boy instead
02:12of Stretch Dude. I'm going to look into that a little bit later. First, let's bring in
02:16some characters to compare. First, let's maybe bring in some bad guys to go along with The
02:20Collector. So next to The Collector, you've got, of course, Devil Flanders. Here's also what he
02:24looks like with Freddy Willy, and also as well, Dracula Burns. I really should have also done
02:29this as well when we were looking at... Well, hold on a second. Hold on. Let's not get ahead
02:32of ourselves. Who else could perhaps we bring in? How about maybe Homer Kong? And maybe as well,
02:38let's bring in Bart the Fly. Because, of course, we do have a couple of Barts this time around.
02:42Bart now evens things out with Homer, because Homer, of course, got three figures of the last
02:46three sets. Now, because, of course, this is the fourth set, we now finally have three Barts. A Hugo,
02:51if you really would consider that a Bart, and, of course, Bart the Fly. I didn't do this, though.
02:55This was something I was talking about earlier. I didn't do this, though, when we looked at Willy
02:58as Freddy. I didn't want to bring in the Willy that we did get from Jax Pacific. And, of course,
03:02considering, as well, we don't have a Bartman from the Jax, or at least I don't have one from
03:07Playmate Stories, but I do have one at least from Jax, here's what the figures, as well,
03:11looks like with Bartman. While I would admit The Collector's Lair is my least favorite of
03:15the Simpsons trios of horror sets, I will say it's the most elaborate. It's also the tallest,
03:20as well. Going back a few steps to the earliest one that we looked at, Cemetery from Springfield,
03:25you can see, like, The Collector's Lair is almost even, in fact, like twice the height. If we were
03:29to take the top balcony off, it's, I would say, about almost the same size as Springfield's
03:34Cemetery. There's a lot more plastic, as well, that's being used for The Collector's Lair. When
03:38we had looked, for example, at Cemetery, you remember, like, there was that cardboard backer
03:42that went behind everything else. There's, like, all plastic-er when you're dealing with The
03:46Collector's Lair. Let's just move this all out of the way. As for the figures themselves that come
03:51included with this, of course, we get ourselves The Collector comic book guy. We'll say, as well,
03:55have Lucy Lawless as Xena, or at least dressed as Xena, and then, of course, memory lapsed the sides.
04:00We also have Stretch Dude and Clobber Girl. The only accessory, really, that comes included with
04:05these is, of course, a reference to the episode, Oh, It's No Longer Mint. He gets himself, of course,
04:10the phaser. The phaser itself kind of gives the suggested idea that it looks like the old, like,
04:14the old 50s or 60s Star Trek series, although they've added a little fin on the back here, so
04:19it looks like it's part bird. It does fit into his hands. It does also somewhat fit into Lucy's hands,
04:26as well, but in order for her to hold it, you kind of have to put it on the side. I mean, obviously,
04:30she's only gonna be shooting the side. That doesn't really make the most sense, but if you
04:33really want to put it in the proper place, you're gonna obviously want to store it in comic book
04:36guy's hands, and that's just the case. Again, you can't really do much with this hand, but at least
04:40you can do a lot more with this one. You just plug into his hand, and he's ready to use it. One thing
04:46you may already notice is, for the comic book guy, unfortunately, that the collector has a big stain
04:50right there. Oh, no! Right there. There's a line, and I thought for a second getting this out that it
04:55was supposed to be there, and yet nowhere to be found is it on the other side. There's a big C
05:00there on the front that's been sculpted in. The head sculpt is actually really good on this guy.
05:03I would almost even say that the comic book guy collector is the most interesting character of the
05:09four that we get in this set. He has himself, of course, the little... very little in the way of a
05:14beard. It sort of just like scribbles in there. He's also got, as well, some sculpted teeth and a
05:19painted in tongue. Of course, wears the mask. He's also got himself the cape there on the back that
05:23also has the C that matches on the front. It's a softer plastic that they use. One thing I did do,
05:27and I'm still gonna probably end up leaving this on there. If I lift up the cape, see there's a
05:31little plastic sheet. Now they had probably put that there with the idea in mind that like this
05:36is a darker green cape. This is a lighter green. Can you probably already see where I'm gonna be
05:40connecting the dots? Unfortunately, I think that that's gonna, over time, leave a stain on the
05:45costume. So that's one of the reasons why I've left this on here. I took this out of the packaging.
05:49I noticed it right away, and I thought, you know what? I might just leave it. I might just leave it
05:53just because I don't want that stain to develop. I mean, it's on a place that you'd never see
05:56anyways unless you looked under the hood. You'd never be any wiser. The fact that maybe there
06:01would have been a stain that would have developed onto his costume. But you know, I'm just gonna
06:04leave it the way it is just to try to ensure that this looks as good as it does years from now. Now
06:10the figure's articulation. Comic book guy does have a head that rotates back and forth. It's really
06:14tight, and you're not gonna be able to move it much like the real thing. The arms move back
06:18and forth as well. There's no hand articulation. There is surprisingly no waist articulation either,
06:23which I was really thinking, but I guess it makes sense because they've sculpted all of this
06:27anyways. How would you really put a waist swivel in there? I mean, it does feel like it would want
06:31to give, but I think the giving would only end up breaking. Of course, he does have the connecting
06:35port on the bottom of his boots. That's gonna plug into, well, two sections here on the front,
06:40and then there's nothing really on the top of the balcony, but we'll kind of talk more about
06:44that in a moment. Then on to Lucy Lawless. Now for all intents and purposes, I liked Xena. I
06:49loved watching it when I was a kid. I don't really have much interest really in the idea that they
06:53would have thrown in a Xena. I think, if anything, this is one of those specific sets where, unlike
06:59the others, they sort of just randomly selected characters that had something to do with Treehouse
07:04of Horror, but they didn't have to always have some connection with one another. I mean, Dracula
07:07Burns has really nothing to do with Kong Homer, for example, but at least for that, this set at
07:13least has all the characters that are specific to this episode, but if you're not a fan of this
07:18episode, you may not be a fan of the idea that they included Lucy Lawless. I think this is from
07:23Simpsons Treehouse of Horror 10, which happens to have also I Know What You Diddly Did Last Summer,
07:28or I think it was I Just Know What You Diddly Did, which does have Flanders
07:33dressed up as the fisherman. I would have rather, honestly, a fisherman, but the thing about it
07:38though is because this set is so specific to this one episode, this one story, I think probably that's
07:44one of the reasons why we get all the characters from this. Ideally, I would have liked instead
07:49had they included more randomly selected characters, but again, for this being the
07:53what it is, it makes the most sense. I put down Lucy Lawless. I don't really know why I put her down,
07:57but you can see she's just well painted. I mean, she looks a lot like she does in the
08:01cartoon. I don't think necessarily she looked a lot like Lucy Lawless in the cartoon. Her eyes are
08:05looking up. Of course, she does have the painted on there armor that she has in the Xena series,
08:10boots there also as well, and there's the little connecting point on the bottom. So again, these
08:14will all plug into the diorama. You'll see that all in a second. Again, very limited articulation.
08:19Can't really do anything at all with the head. There's so much space that's being occupied by
08:24hair and shoulder pads, even just to move it back and forth. It only really gives you the suggestion
08:28that you can, but it's kind of giving the nudge that you probably shouldn't. The arms do hinge
08:33forward and back, and there is no waist swivel. You can at least rotate the legs under the waist,
08:38so I suppose that does count, and there's no foot articulation either as well. On to Clobber Guy.
08:45On to Stretch Dude. Why am I... I'm just falling apart here. Probably because the candle hasn't
08:50joined us. You may know so already that the candle hasn't joined us at all in this review. The candle
08:54is off doing other things right now. He's probably going in the same place as that Socrates. Remember
08:58Socrates my crow? If anybody was wondering where Socrates was from the earlier Spooky Spots,
09:04he met a family. Well, he actually has started a family. He met somebody and then he sort of
09:09just settled down, and I didn't want to keep writing him because I just felt like I was
09:12bothering the guy. So Socrates has gone on to better things. He's got himself a life. He's got
09:17himself a career. The guy's making good money. Yeah, Socrates. Wherever you may be, my friend,
09:21I don't know if you've been watching these videos, but thank you for all the years of laughter. On to
09:26now, though, like going back to this. On to Stretch Dude. Now, Stretch Dude's an interesting looking
09:31Bart because for all intents and purposes, you'd be able to rotate his head back and forth, but he
09:35also has a workable gimmick. Like in the cartoon, he has stretchable limbs. Now, this is something
09:41I'm only doing right now for this review. I won't be doing this, though, moving forward when it comes
09:45to displaying these because this is using a soft plastic rubber or soft rubbery material. I don't
09:50feel like this is gonna have longevity, especially if you're pulling it like this. If you've had a
09:54Stretch Armstrong, it would have been similar to that. The neck is by far the thinnest. Look at the
09:59thin strand of licorice that we have only connecting Bart's head to the rest of his body. Yes, you can
10:05pull it, but keeping in mind as well, like this set came out. When did this set came out? Like,
10:09I'm gonna look at the date. I'll come back to you guys. It's been out for a while, let's just say,
10:13and the material that they're using for this, I think, would degrade over time. The fact that I'm
10:17even doing that right now is probably a big no-no. Of course, he does have there the markings on the
10:22front of his chest. It does kind of look like a Lego spaceman, although I think with the Lego
10:26spaceman, it was like a little triangular rocket ship that was flying around the planet. Very
10:30similar, though. He has no waist articulation. Well, he does have a little bit of a waist
10:34articulation point, and he's also got like a really kind of weird looking leg that jets out
10:38like this. It's funny enough, though, it is the closest thing that we have to a regular Bart,
10:43and I guess because of that, we could bring in the Jack-specific Bart so you guys can see.
10:47Similar style of heads. This version of Bart has the lower jaw a little bit smaller than this one.
10:54Size-wise, I suppose you probably could still have these guys on display together because they're
10:59similar in size to one another. So there's Clobber... I keep calling him Clobber Girl. Stop
11:04that. Stretch dude. On to Clobber Girl. Of course, this is Lisa. She's bigger and bulkier. Much
11:09stronger than Bart. She was really stronger than Bart anyways before they got the radiation waves.
11:14She does have, again, like the most realistic, closest thing we have to a Lisa Simpson, at least
11:19from the Treehouse of Horror sets. We have gotten, of course, regular Lisas. Most of my Simpsons sets
11:25was my Simpsons figures as a whole from Playmates. The ones I had years ago, I just sold. I just
11:30thought to myself, you know what? I have so much of this collection anyways that's building up.
11:33At one point, I was kind of storing them away in totes and just after a while, I'm like, what am I
11:37doing with my life? What am I doing with my life? I need to move on and do other things like Socrates.
11:41The man started a family. He's got a good job, good living. I need to be something like that. I don't
11:46need to be this. I don't need to be this. I sold off all my Simpsons Playmates. The only stuff I
11:51really then kept was the Treehouse of Horror and eventually I sold those. Then I bought them back.
11:55Well, that's where we are now. We got Clobber Girl there featured on the front. Now,
12:00this is actually just painted in place, similar though to Stretch Dude. She's got gloves on there
12:06as well. Bare feet, but the feet do connect together and then of course you've got the
12:09connecting peg there as well. Again, I don't really have as much interest in this set. I
12:14think only out of being the completionist did I actually want to pick up this set. Admittedly,
12:18it has one of the better looking dioramas, but even then, I think I would have preferred if
12:25they had used different characters instead of the ones we get here. The collector's fine,
12:28but maybe like Lucy Lawless. I think I could have just been fine to do without.
12:31So let's move those guys all out of the way. We got to make up a good bit of space because
12:37obviously we're gonna be dealing a lot with the collector's lair. Okay, so the collector's lair,
12:41first of all, is all plastic. There's no cardboard at all. This is all plastic on the back. The thing
12:47that I think is kind of neat is that they actually did do the cutout here for a Clobber Girl and
12:51Stretch Dude. So it looks like they actually smashed through. There's all this rubber all
12:55around this. Now there are three connecting points. There's three here. So always again,
13:00you have one character that has to sit this one out. But you could connect Bart here, Lisa,
13:05or Lucy Lawless. There really isn't as much space. If you want to put the collector, clearly there's
13:10no way that you can be able to put him on the edge. You'd have to put him probably over here,
13:14for example, or maybe even over here. Lucy Lawless may have to go over there. But the way that they
13:21put this so far over here by the vat, it just doesn't give many quarters available. Even if
13:27you want to take Lisa, Lisa probably could be the closest one that fits onto that. And again,
13:31she just connects in place. We'll talk a little bit more about the way that these connect in a
13:35second. Further though, adding to the idea of what I had to add. So this whole back section,
13:40this entire piece had to be attached to the bottom of the base. This post had to be also added as
13:47well. Then I added the balcony. Then I added the railing. By the way, Gilligan in the back there,
13:53and the robot from Space Family Robinson, lost in space, lost in space. See, it's my memory. It's
14:00all this radiation around me. I think that this is neat, at least, that they've actually got these
14:04guys pinned up in baggies. Again, he's a collector, so he's collecting all these things.
14:09It's a soft plastic, which is probably not something you're going to expect to see when
14:12you get this out of the packaging. If you are one that likes to collect things on mint,
14:16you're probably never going to open this up, and you'd never know that you could do this.
14:22Stop that. So again, a little bit of assembly that's required. Oh, let's not trigger the
14:26button in the process. The one thing I also didn't do here as well, keeping the whole idea
14:30that this is actually a mint, I didn't take that little cardboard piece off. As it is right now,
14:36this is still set for demo. And demo, really, I still think is the best way to have these things
14:41displayed. Unless you're successful enough to get them all attached onto their connecting ports,
14:46demo is the easiest way to cycle through all the audio clips without having to worry about fussing
14:51with this every time. I'm still going to try to attach these, but I'll show you guys that more
14:55in a second. The bottom, you do have your battery compartment. This still uses the original
14:58batteries. I haven't changed these out at all. Then you've got demo, then you've got off,
15:04then you've got display above that. So off, obviously, is what you'd expect off to be. It's
15:09not going to do anything. If you set it to demo, demo would be then so you could cycle through
15:13any of the characters on the display base that come included with this. So you could get the
15:17audio clips from Xena, you could get the audio clips from, again, Stretch Dude and Clobber Girl,
15:21and you could get it from the collector without even having to worry about where those things
15:24go on the display base. But if you want to have it correct, you would switch it to display.
15:30Display, though, if you default it without actually adding any character to it,
15:35it's going to make this sound, which sort of does sound like Spider-Man shooting a web.
15:40I would say it's probably one of the least annoying things between this and the crow
15:43from the Springfield Cemetery. I think they're probably the most likable things that you have
15:48to listen to because you can probably listen to it a lot. The space, the spaceship set, and also,
15:54as well, the other one, the ironic punishment, were things that you really don't want to have
15:58to hear again and again and again. So if you want to take these characters, for example, now there
16:03aren't any connecting points on the top here. They're all localized down below here. So you
16:08can see that there's a slot and a slot, and then there's a little circuit pin there in the middle.
16:14That's going to plug into here. Now, with these clips, these clips are supposed to,
16:18for all intents and purposes, snap into these holes and keep everything secure in place.
16:22You will always have a hard time getting these guys.
16:28And even when you do attach them, oh, there goes that plastic sheet. I'm going to have to
16:32come back to that. I don't want to be interrupted, obviously, by the audio here, but you can see,
16:38one of the problems that this set has, and this happened with me earlier,
16:42is that it just started and it would not stop talking. It would, I mean, you take like, this
16:48is the, probably I've done this three or four times, but it would not stop talking.

16:57It would, I mean, you take like, this is the, probably I've done this three or four times,
17:01but before hitting record, attaching these onto these ports should right away only cycle through
17:07any of the collector's speeds, and it would only then give you one of them. But yet there's
17:11something about this port right here, that the moment I attach it, it seems to do a lot more
17:19than what it's being asked to do. The little button here is on the back, and you can see,
17:25like again, even though it should be attached on there, it's not attaching properly.
17:35Okay, so let's hope that we've actually got this securely attached. Press the button.
17:39So that's the collector. At least we got him in place. Let's try Lucy Lawless. So again,
17:57she's just going to attach onto here. Okay, now I don't think I've got her all the way attached.
18:06Let's try over here. There we go. Funny enough, it happened to be the one that's
18:12leaning off to the side, but let's...

18:56It's interesting that this port right here, this connector, was giving me problems earlier,
19:02and it still doesn't seem to be working correctly. Now also with this set, one of the
19:08advertisements, and I haven't yet tried this, is that you can use also characters from other
19:12interactive worlds. I'm going to take this off for a second here, and this is the first time
19:17I'm trying this with Mr. Burns. Now maybe Burns probably is... you know what? Burns probably isn't
19:21the best one because he's got that long robe. Let's try Devil Flanders. So Flanders would
19:26just attach onto that, and I don't think he's going to work either.
19:37I always noticed this when I had these sets before. It's trial and error.
19:40You may get one character, for example, like Homer. You know what? Let's try Homer.
19:44Homer is a generic enough character that maybe he might actually work.
19:48No, he's not going to work either. So again, it is a trial and error for you to figure out
19:54which characters work over others. The thing about it though is, while again, this is the
19:58more elaborate of all the sets we've gotten from Playmates and the Treehouse of Horrors,
20:03it is honestly though my least favorite for all the stuff that it has going for it, and yet it
20:08just doesn't have the appeal to me that the other sets would have had. So again, I'll just kind of
20:13bring back in the other sets we've already had a look at. Bringing in the Kang and Kodos. Oh,
20:18I just gotta... there we just kind of move everything out of the way here. I put some
20:22of the sets over to the side here. Bringing in the Kang and Kodos. I know clearly we're
20:26not going to have enough space to fit all of these in frame. And then where's the other one?
20:31Where did I... where did I... oh, the other one's right over here. So let's bring these all in.
20:37I want to show you at least, guys, even though they're not going to be able to fit all in frame,
20:41I want to show you at least all the interactive Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors sets that we've
20:46had a look at. Admittingly though, I mean, now that we've looked at all four sets,
20:50I still think my favorites are probably like the Cemetery, honestly. Even though
20:54the Cemetery is a little bit more simple in design and the fact it had cardboard construction,
20:59I think it's probably... maybe, again, it just has more sentimental value to me because that
21:03was one of the first sets... it was the first interactive world I got of Springfield long
21:08before I even got the regular city sets. Then I probably would say like Kang and Kodos,
21:13then Ironic Punishment, and then like a distant last would honestly be the Collector's Lair.
21:18Not so much for the fact that it's not as good of a lair. I think it just doesn't have... there's
21:24like certain Springfield interactive worlds mean more to me. For the Treehouse of Horror,
21:31for example, like there's certain Treehouse of Horrors I like over others. The Collector didn't
21:34necessarily feel as much like a Treehouse of Horror and maybe that's one of the reasons why
21:39I don't love this set as much as the others. I mean, praise certainly could be given at least
21:44to Playmates that at least they gave us a really large diorama sort of to make up for the fact that
21:50it's the least Halloween-ish set that we've actually gotten. The fact it's all made of
21:55plastic, the fact it has the little easter eggs like, for example, Gilligan and the robot in the
21:59top corner from Lost in Space are nice sets. But, you know, again, looking for how much they've done
22:04here and looking how more simpler this set is, I still always would gravitate back to the cemetery
22:09long before I'd go to the Collector's Lair. 2003. Sorry, what? 2003. That's the date that was on the
22:17bottom of the box. So if anyone doing simple math on that, that's 21 years ago that this was first
22:22released in Toys R Us. Based on the fact that that's 21 years, I'm surprised actually that the
22:26OG batteries haven't leaked at all because I haven't changed the batteries at all on these.
22:31Those batteries though will be removed on all the four sets when these eventually go back in boxes.
22:35Much more deconstruction will be required on this one than all the others because
22:39the Collector, unlike the others, is actually a two-level diorama.
22:44The back wall is all one piece, as you probably see on the back of this, but then you have to
22:48add the balcony, you have to add the railing, and then you have to add as well the little supporting
22:52beam on the side. So again, everything stores, but if you're looking to put this on the
22:56shelf, you're going to have to accommodate the fact that this one is a little higher than others
23:00and space those shelves accordingly. Now as a Collector, I would only honestly suggest getting
23:06this set if you're looking to get all four. There's nothing really to this that resonates
23:10for me like Halloween. I know it's from a Treehouse of Horror, Treehouse of Horror X or 10 if you
23:15prefer, but again like other than them just dressed in costumes, if I was looking this on
23:20the shelf, I would just think it's part of the Springfield world and not necessarily one specific
23:25to Treehouse of Horror. The other three would be definitely ones I would recommend if you want to
23:29go back and collect those all now. I think honestly the Collector's Lair, if I've looked at
23:34the prices lately, the Collector's Lair was the cheapest of the four to get. Kang & Kota's is still
23:39the most expensive set, still topping well over $200, and then all the other sets usually set
23:44around $80 to $100. The Collector's Lair tends to be the cheaper of the sets, probably because I
23:50don't think as many people are interested to get these. Now the Collector wasn't a fun episode, I
23:55suppose. One of the things that was cool was all the easter eggs of things that the Collector was
23:58collecting, like the fourth doctor from Doctor Who. He was in one of those bags as well. I don't
24:03know how much breathing holes they actually put in there. Hopefully the Collector is concerned a
24:07little bit about someone, you know, again choking inside those bags, but it was kind of cool to have
24:13all those little easter eggs referenced in the cartoon. Don't love really the episodes. I think
24:17like I Know What You Diddly Did is a much more, certainly first of all, a better Halloween episode
24:23of The Simpsons, but it also was more fun than The Collector. Now with all the characters here as
24:27well, I mean you have one thing that's different with this set. Not only the fact with a celebrity
24:32cameo, but the fact that also Bart has rubbery pieces in his arms and his neck. Now realizing
24:37that this was 20 years old, I probably should have not maybe pulled Bart's neck as much as I did.
24:42The neck is a very thin bit of rubber plastic, so you really want to make sure don't be pulling it
24:47because the years aren't going to be too kind to that kind of material. That rubber is probably
24:51going to be splitting over time. What do you guys think of The Collector's Lair? Let me know down
24:55below in the comment section. Still it's a bummer that you know the connecting ports didn't work the
25:00way that I was hoping that they were going to be working. I think I fared a little bit better though
25:03when we looked at the cemetery. It just seems to have worsened and my luck just seems to get worse
25:09and worse with each of the sets that we looked at afterwards. The Collector's Lair does connect.
25:13Some of the ports though do end up cycling through more audio clips than really what was asked of it.
25:18If I'm only plugging really just The Collector, The Collector is the only thing I really
25:23want to be hearing. But sometimes this does cycle through more than one. Speaking of cycling through
