00:00Hmm new iPhones. What do we think? Well, I'll tell you what I think. This is the 16 Pro
00:05This is the Pro Max and I must admit when I came out of the Apple press conference when they unveiled these and got hands-on
00:10I was a little bit underwhelmed
00:12I think a lot of us were and I think realistically this should be considered like an S
00:17Series phone like they used to do it's like the tick rather than the tock of upgrade cycles
00:21But having spent a bit of time with this now while all the headlines were talking about this new camera control button and this
00:29Desert color. I don't care about all that. What I do care about is the incredible battery life
00:33This is significantly better than before
00:35Also the photography modes which actually make these cameras a whole lot better if you're happy to tinker and play around and get used to
00:41It to give you a quick overview of what is new with these 16 pros
00:45We have bigger screens both are 0.2 inches bigger. So 6.3 and 6.9. We have tougher more shatter resistant glass
00:52They've changed up the chemistry of this ceramic shield as they call it for the glass on the screen
00:56We have the new camera control button
00:58We have new camera hardware including the 48 megapixel ultra-wide lens as well as a faster sensor on the main camera new camera features
01:06Such as photography styles, which we'll definitely dive into in a second. We can now shoot 4k 120 for super sexy high-res slow-mo
01:16We have the new audio mix tool and combined with the studio mics which are exclusively on the new pro series
01:22You can actually get quite significantly better audio from your iPhone. Of course. We have a new chip
01:27This is powered by the a18 Pro. We also have better internal cooling. Thanks to a new aluminium graphite
01:34Substructure thing which basically means less throttling great for gamers
01:38We have Wi-Fi 7 and a new modem for faster mobile data speeds
01:42Then there is Apple intelligence, although you're not gonna get it straight away
01:46You would probably know that if you've bought one
01:48But this is actually running on the beta software so I can play around with it
01:52But all the writing tools and supercharged Siri and image playground and genmojis and that stuff officially will be launching in October
02:00But only in US English, although you can change your language to US English and get it then although
02:05I don't think that will work in the EU or in China for British English and other varieties of English
02:10It'll be December with more countries coming next year
02:13So Apple is definitely playing catch-up here versus Galaxy AI and Gemini and it is a bit frustrating that one of the key
02:20Headline upgrades of the new 16 series because only the 16 series and the 15 pros will support Apple intelligence
02:26that is not ready yet, but it will be coming soon and
02:30Most important of all a new color. This is desert the color du jour if you will
02:35I've also got the 16 pro here in natural titanium
02:38What I did think though if I bring in my iPhone 11 pro max from five years ago four years ago
02:45This is gold. This is desert and
02:48In the right lighting it's not too far apart
02:52It's like a slightly more muted version and actually while I was looking at the 11 pro max
02:56It did kind of strike me at least on the face of it
02:58How not a whole lot has changed over the past four or five years
03:02Obviously, we have better cameras faster chips faster screens thinner bezels, but holding the two side-by-side, you know
03:08We're putting apps just swapping around doing everyday stuff
03:11It does kind of put into context why some people are feeling a little bit frustrated by the lack of innovation
03:17But then again, there's only so much you can do with a black rectangular slab of glass unless you're gonna make it flip or fold
03:23And well, I do enjoy reviewing those Android flip phones and different form factors and in the day
03:29I think most of us still want to go for one of these especially as it doesn't make it stupidly expensive
03:33It is still very expensive though
03:34But actually the good news is no price change the 16 pro starts at 999
03:38That's in pounds and dollars with the pro max if I cannot scratch the screens starts at 200 more than that 1199
03:45However, this only gets 128 base storage this gets 256 and given the fact that you can shoot 4k
03:52120 and pro res and play around with photography modes and maybe shoot in pro raw to really take advantage of that
03:5848 megapixel ultra wide then I would definitely recommend up in the storage to 256 cost 100 quid to do so
04:03Which means then it's only a hundred between them really it's gonna come down to what size you want
04:08So let's talk about the design because actually for the first time in a while
04:12Actually, there is no difference between these guys in terms of specs exactly the same camera exactly the same processor
04:19except for as I say a lower base storage amount the main differences between these guys are of course the size 6.3 versus
04:256.9 inches and I actually think that little bump from 6.1 to 6.3 on the 16 pro makes this the best size phone for I
04:34Would say most people the downside is the battery doesn't last quite as long and I'll show you my full battery comparison in just a
04:40Second, but the 16 pro max is a really big phone
04:43It's about six grams heavier than last year and a tiniest bit wider
04:47But mostly a little bit taller so it can result in a little bit of finger gymnastics
04:51Which actually I'm doing more so than ever because of this new camera control button
04:54But you can also do this and just swipe down at the bottom so you can reach the top there for me
05:00I'm a pro max kind of guy. I want the longest battery possible
05:03I want the biggest screen possible because I also watch TV shows and movies on here
05:07Especially when I'm traveling and also doing bits of editing so photos and I'm used to it, but I would still recommend the 16 pro
05:12It's just much more comfortable to hold and use one-handed
05:15It fits in your pocket more easily and I must admit it is still a bit frustrating that for a pro
05:20Max phone with all the features and bells and whistles including iOS 18 as you can see I've customized my home screen here on a
05:266.9 inch screen you still can't have two apps side-by-side. There is no split screen multitasking
05:32How are we in 2024 with this size phone?
05:34That's called a pro max and you can't have two apps side-by-side and there's not the end of the world
05:39Just a bit frustrating on quick side note
05:42I will be doing a separate review video for the regular 16 and the 16 plus I actually think spoiler alert
05:48These are the most significant upgrades still held back a little bit by 60 Hertz, but for 799
05:53I think the 16 especially in this ultramarine color, although I really like the pink as well
05:57Make sure you hit that subscribe button and it'll be coming in a few days
06:00Or maybe it'll be already up by the time you watch this who knows I'll tell you what though
06:04The most impressive thing about this whole new generation of iPhones the battery life
06:08Let's just dive right in and actually made an entire battery comparison video
06:12Which took me forever to make now sadly as you can see there is one iPhone missing the 16 plus
06:17Didn't actually arrive in time for this video
06:19But of the three new iPhones I do have versus the three predecessors and most of the Android competition
06:24We are actually seeing a marked improvement in battery
06:27So bigger batteries, but also with this second generation 3 nanometer a 18 pro chip try saying that three times fast
06:34It's more efficient as well because last year's 15 pro actually came last in my test here
06:39But the new 16 pro lasted almost an hour longer
06:42But even better the 16 pro max lasted over two hours longer than the 15 pro max
06:49Like I'm telling you the 15 pro max was already pretty good for battery life
06:52But this is just next level up for example
06:55I would normally finish the day with about maybe 25% of my battery left on the 15 pro max now
07:01It's more like 35 36 percent obviously a ton of variables there
07:04But just to give you an idea you coming from your phone
07:07You've been using for two three four years to a new phone with a fresh battery
07:11You're immediately gonna get a much better battery life because of the condition of this new battery, but in my battery test
07:16I'm using a fresh 15 pro max with a hundred percent battery health
07:19They all have a hundred percent and it still lasted significantly longer as a two hours longer, but wait
07:25There's more because if you fancy spending even more money
07:27You can buy Apple's new 30 watt charging brick as well as their new wireless charging pad or is it puck?
07:34I figure what they call it
07:35But either way if you do combine the new
07:37Adapter with a new wireless charger it can now support 25 watt wireless charging getting you to 50% of your battery in around 30
07:44To 35 minutes in terms of wired charging the wattage hasn't changed
07:48However, it will charge faster than last year in previous iPhones while you're doing something like gaming
07:52So basically the new iPhones can charge at the same normal speed, but now while you're using it as well
07:59Now speaking of speed that's very loud, but this is Assassin's Creed Mirage
08:03The new 16 pros use the new a 18 pro chip
08:07Whereas the regular 16s use the a 18 which actually is a two generation jump for these guys
08:1216 to the 18 whereas we've gone from the 17 pro to the 18 pro on these
08:17Now performance has never been an issue with iPhones
08:20They've been incredibly fast for a few years in fact, and if we have a quick look at a couple of benchmarks in Geekbench 6
08:26We're looking at about an 18% faster CPU for the pros versus last year although about
08:3127% faster for the 16 versus the 15 and in this quite demanding 3d mark solar bay test
08:37We're looking at a 13% optic for the graphics although a whopping 60% optic for the regular 16 versus last year
08:44All new iPhones have improved the cooling and the thermals and specifically on the pro models
08:48We have this new graphite aluminium structure internally
08:51So we are getting slightly less throttling and also it did stay a touch cooler on the outside around one to one and a half degrees
08:58Celsius cooler
08:59Funnily enough though this Assassin's Creed Mirage does still start to get frame drops, but aside from that
09:05Everything you play on this as you expect and also basically on last year's phone as well
09:09Will run flawlessly Genshin never drops below 60 war thunders are the 119 or 120 with ray tracing so versus the 15 pros
09:17It's maybe not a significant upgrade in terms of graphics and performance
09:20But certainly if you're coming from an older iPhone and just for some gigs
09:24I thought I'd run a couple of the tests on the 11 Pro Max as well
09:26And the new one is three four times faster
09:31One more thing about speed though because all iPhone 16s the regulars and the pros now support Wi-Fi 7
09:37You probably don't have a Wi-Fi 7 router
09:39I actually do and I probably one of the five people in the world who actually has one right now
09:43But you know over time you probably upgrade and you'll get better smoother more consistent Wi-Fi going forward
09:49But also we have a new modem. I believe it's the Qualcomm x75 and last year on the 15s. We have the x70
09:55It doesn't really matter what it's called because I went around my local city of Bristol
09:58Ran a bunch of speed tests on last year's 15 Pro Max and the new one and it was consistently faster particularly the download speeds
10:07Can
10:10We talk about this it's the new camera control button Apple's just adding buttons left right and center. We've got five now
10:17we've got the action button two volumes the power and
10:20The camera control and this actually is also on the regular phones
10:24In fact, the 16s have both the action and the camera control and essentially it's another shortcut for the camera
10:30So I can either press once or double press as I've changed it to because I kept
10:34Accidentally turning on and switching to the camera. So with a double press it opens the camera
10:38I can press again take a picture or I can hold it down to start shooting a video now generally the camera control
10:45it's a bit meh, honestly
10:46sometimes it's been kind of cool to play around with and
10:49Double press and then enjoy the haptic feedback and the little swish animations that they've added other times. It's just got in the way
10:56I've accidentally pressed it and maybe like change the depth or the exposure of an image and it's just been
11:01Distracting or I'm trying to figure out what I actually want to use it for. I think I've settled on the cameras options
11:07So I can switch between the different zoom levels
11:09But if I'm honest, it just feels like Apple's running out of ideas a bit
11:12They thought or what can we do to make the 16 series stand out?
11:15Or let's add another button that does what you could already do on the screen or indeed what you could already do with the action
11:21Button, which would start the camera or even the volume down which also acts as a shutter
11:26There's so many different ways opening the camera
11:28I appreciate this goes a step further and you can swipe around change the styles and the depth and some of you may absolutely love
11:35It and think it's the best thing since sliced bread for me. I could take it or leave it to be honest
11:39I suppose one thing it does do is free up the action button because I think Apple said that three quarters of people
11:44Had the action button set to the camera now I can free it up and put it back to
11:49Silent so basically back to the toggle switch that it's always been but to free up the action button for maybe
11:54Accessibility features or a shortcut for an app that is useful to have back and it doesn't get in the way
11:58You can just turn it off if you want
12:00You don't have to use the camera control but it's there and it's worth having a play around with but it's not a reason to
12:06Rush out and buy an iPhone 16
12:08Although when Apple intelligence does finally launch it will also have this visualization feature
12:14Kind of like a Google lens so you can just press the camera control and it will scan what's in the scene and then tell
12:19You more about it. It's still three lenses
12:21We have the main the ultra-wide and the telephoto the 5x telephoto is the same regardless of which size phone you go for
12:27Last year, we had the 3x now they both share the same 5x no change there
12:31Actually, we also have a new main sensor
12:34It's basically the same sensor but a little bit faster
12:36And so if you're shooting at full resolution, you know pro raw shots
12:40Then the shot-to-shot speed is notably faster as less shutter lag, but in everyday use you're not really gonna see any difference
12:47We do also have a new ultra wide camera
12:50This is 48 megapixels off from 12 megapixels last year. So quite a bump there lovely macro shot
12:55I've got here or shot at 48 megapixels pro raw also because of the high resolution
13:00They can now use their quad pixel binning for pixels into one basically to slightly improve low-light performance
13:05For example, if you look at the sand lines in my little table there
13:09But then also the new iPhone 16's generally are over sharpening a bit more than last year
13:13So that could just be down to the processing in the ISP. I don't think the new ultra-wide is a significant upgrade
13:21All
13:22iPhone 16's also have a new lens coating to help reduce lens flare
13:26Which I feel like they say this every year, but in my little side-by-side test versus a 15 pro max
13:31I can't see a significant difference that little green ghost is still following me around
13:36Perhaps it's been reduced a little bit
13:39But it's not significant and I have to say overall
13:42I'm not that impressed with the improvements the upgrades with the pros camera system
13:48If I show you a couple of photos versus last year's 15 pro max
13:51They look very similar what we're basically seeing are slightly more muted colors perhaps
13:56But they've also made their smart HDR even more aggressive. I mean look at my purple lights in the corner
14:01They're just completely flat now
14:03We've lost some of that texture that we do see on the iPhone 15's and also just genuinely across all the lenses
14:08It feels like they've upped the sharpness by out of 20% or something and it photos while still very good
14:14Just aren't significantly better in some cases because of this extra over sharpening. I feel like perhaps it's even a slight downgrade
14:21Don't get me wrong. The iPhone 16 pros camera is still very good, but it's all relative compared to the competition
14:27I think we're seeing more innovation with one-inch sensors from Xiaomi and Oppo and other brands my camera comparison
14:33most people thought the Samsung came on top of though you have to be careful of a
14:37Fanboy ism. I suppose it's more that we just perhaps expected more from a new generation of iPhones and really it's more of the same
14:44Just with extra features on top
14:47But I have saved the best till last because we're the new iPhone 16's you can now
14:53shoot in spatial video and photo so you can get your Apple Vision Pro and
14:57No, you're not doing that. What you probably will use though and play around with are these new photography styles?
15:02I've seen you this actually launched a year or two ago, but I never actually ended up using the photography styles
15:07However with the new iPhone 16's and this is the same for the base ones and also the pros
15:12They've massively revamped it and this is probably the most significant upgrade with the iPhone 16's
15:18It really is because essentially it allows you to get away from the iPhone look of a photo
15:23You can bring the shadows back in you can change the skin tones the moods
15:28Now unlike a regular filter that you may apply an Instagram or in Lightroom afterwards that just sits on top of the photo
15:34This is a much more advanced kind of smart filter. It is as they would say non-destructive
15:38So you can add remove edit and your original standard iPhone looking photo will always still be there
15:44Now if I get right in closer and try a little live demo, so this is the regular camera
15:48Nothing's changed here, but up here. You've got this little symbol
15:52This is very hard to do in reverse
15:54Which brings up the photography styles and you've got this little D pad control panel there now if I swipe up
15:59You can see there's a selection of these undertones
16:01It says undertones up there which kind of changes my skin tone a little bit
16:04You can change the intensity of it there
16:06but then if you go the other way you have a selection of moods which changes more substantially the
16:13Overall aesthetic of the photo including some black and white options there
16:16and then you can fine-tune it with this little two axis control panel which adjusts the shadows and the intensity of the colors and
16:22You can also reduce the overall intensity of I'm still gonna call it a filter even if it is an advanced filter
16:29Now the first thing that'll happen when you open the camera with your shiny new iPhone 16 is that it will introduce you to these
16:34Photography styles and it'll also ask you to pick four of your favorite photos
16:38It doesn't really matter what they are
16:39but essentially photos that you like
16:41But it's so it can then give you a preview of the different undertones and moods to try and figure out what you want
16:46And then when you've chosen it, that will be your default photo style
16:49But as I say this can be edited added removed at any point in the process of taking the photo or editing afterwards
16:56Essentially Apple are giving us more control to take the photos that we like which as I say feels very un Apple like but it
17:02is nice and it unlocks what is very good camera hardware and allows you to make it more more personal and this also applies
17:10To the selfie camera, which is good because otherwise there is absolutely no change to this 12 megapixel true-depth selfie camera
17:17And to be honest in my camera comparison
17:19I think the iPhone comes last out of these guys in terms of the selfie camera
17:23Although having these photo styles for the selfie is quite nice
17:26Although I don't find myself playing around with it as much simply because I just don't think the selfie camera is that good
17:32What else is new?
17:33Well, we can now shoot 4k 120, which actually is quite nice to play with although I think this is mostly aimed at creators
17:39I don't think the average person is going to want to shoot 120 FPS very often
17:43But it does allow you to slow it down to half or a quarter speed and get some really high quality
17:47Sexy slow motion and they've made it incredibly easy to adjust this playback speed in the edit
17:53Let's do a little test of audio mix, so I'm in market day here. We've got a little burger stand behind me
17:58This is the standard audio, but then if I switch to in-frame it should start blocking out
18:05What's basically not in the frame?
18:07We've also got studio mode which does a lot more noise reduction
18:10And it's basically to try and make it sound like you're in a studio like you're recording a podcast
18:15And then you've got cinematic mode, which does bring in a bit more of the ambient sound
18:19The best bit though is you don't have to think about it because it will just automatically capture in this new spatial audio
18:25Although you can turn that off if you want
18:27But only if you actually want to go in the edit afterwards tinker with audio mix switch between standard in-frame
18:33Studio or cinematic and then apply it and then save your video again
18:37And the overall quality is also improved because we have these new studio mics on the pro series of phones
18:42Although audio mix will be coming to the regular 16s
18:45But putting everything else to the side the quality of the video the stabilization the cinematic video as well also being able to shoot 4k
18:52120 pro res log although you're going to require an external hard drive at that point
18:56I still maintain this is the best phone for video and also just the quality of uploading to social media from your phone
19:02So for a creator's device, I still think this is the one to go for but in terms of pure
19:07Photography and video quality, I think this is the one to go for
19:10For a creator's device, I still think this is the one to go for but in terms of pure photographic image quality
19:16I think there are better options out there
19:18And if you haven't already checked out my big iphone versus samsung versus pixel camera comparison
19:22Definitely gonna have a watch of that after this for me
19:25The biggest upgrades are the battery life and the photography modes for the camera
19:29But I still very much maintain
19:30This is a 15s pro max rather than the 16 pro max in terms of overall upgrades will that change with apple intelligence?
19:37Maybe we're gonna have to revisit this when uh, ios 18.1 or two perhaps come out to be honest with you, though
19:43I think i'm more excited about ios 18 than I am apple intelligence
19:46It's actually a pretty big upgrade for the software. You have customizable home screens
19:51You can move apps around and change the colors. There's a pause button for filming for recording video like this, which is fantastic
19:57You can mirror your iphone to your macbook assuming it's running mac os or koya. There's a vehicle in motion
20:02Detection thing which helps reduce, uh, your motion sickness while driving
20:06Well, not while you're driving while you're presumably in the passenger seat. There's the new control panel
20:10There's the new flash light tool, which is kind of fun to play around with
20:13There's a ton of upgrades with ios 18, but obviously that's not
20:17Exclusive to the new models. In fact, it will come all the way back to I think the 10s and 10r
20:23So everyone's going to enjoy all those improvements, but it will only be the 15 pros and the 16s that get apple intelligence
20:29Eventually, so yes
20:30They will come back with a longer time review of these guys
20:33a little bit later in the year and also make sure you stay tuned for my full review of the regular 16s because
20:38For my money, these are the most significant upgrade. I know they're still stuck with a 60 hertz screen
20:42Which is infuriating for an 800
20:452024 slash 5 phone, but if you can look past that we're getting a two-generational leap in processor
20:51We're getting an improved 48 megapixel main camera. Although the difference is still quite significant between them
20:56There's bigger sensors on here. So the pros will take better photos
21:00But we also get the action button camera control. We get the audio mix
21:03We also have improved cooling with a redesigned internal structure
21:06And I know it's silly but I just think the colors are fantastic as well
21:09I really like this ultramarine
21:10But let me know what you make of these new 16 pros
21:12And if you are going to go for one
21:13Would you go for the pro or the pro max if you've got any questions drop a comment below if you enjoy the video
21:18A like and subscribe would be fantastic and i'll see you next time right here on the tech chat
