00:00Hey guys I'm Tom the Tech Jap and I'm here at Apple Park and I've elbowed my way to the front
00:04to give you guys a first look at the brand spanking new iPhone 15s. So what's new? Were
00:10the rumors true? And is it actually worth getting excited about? Well here's everything you need to
00:14know about the Pro and Pro Max. And the very first thing you'll notice is how much lighter
00:19these phones are. Apple's very proud of their new titanium housing replacing the glossy stainless
00:24steel and giving us a very sexy new matte brushed metal frame. It has the added benefit of not
00:30showing smudges or fingerprints and it's more durable but really it's the weight that you
00:34notice the most. 221 grams for the 15 Pro Max down from 240 last year. Now all iPhone 15s benefit
00:41from slimmer bezels and a new contoured edge around the screen and it's kind of remarkable
00:45how different these feel from previous iPhones. They've kept the same 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch screen
00:51sizes for the Pro and Pro Max but they have reduced the overall size thanks to those thinner
00:55bezels. So the 15 Pro Max is 0.8 millimeters shorter and I think crucially 0.9 millimeters
01:01narrower which I definitely appreciate for the big Pro Max although it is now 0.4 millimeters
01:06thicker. Of course one of the big rumors was that Apple would be getting rid of the toggle mute
01:10switch and changing it to an action button and that's exactly what happened. Now I'm in two minds
01:15about this because one thing I really like about my iPhones is that in my pocket without looking I
01:19can sort of switch between loud and mute and I don't have to look at it. Now you might have to
01:24look at what you're doing although by default a long press does still mute the phone and you get
01:28a little haptic vibration. I also feel like I might get confused between the power button and the
01:32action mode button when it's in my pocket. Not sure yet we'll have to wait and see but obviously
01:36the advantage is you can do a whole lot more with the action button not just mute the phone. You can
01:40turn on the flashlight, switch to a camera app, do voice recording and you can also toggle on
01:44shortcuts for the accessibility settings which for some people might be a really big deal. However
01:48the more significant change is that Apple has finally embraced USB-C. I mean to be fair the
01:53lightning ports had a great run it was introduced 11 years ago on the iPhone 5 probably because the
01:58European regulations were kind of forcing Apple to do it and also of course with the EU and its
02:02upcoming right to repairability that's coming in a few years it is actually now much easier to fix
02:07and replace the back glass on the back of the new iPhone Pros. Previously on the 14 Pros you had to
02:11go into the front of the screen it was a whole faff so we are on this route to improve repairability
02:16but anyway all iPhone 15s now have USB-C although on the two Pro models it's much faster USB 3
02:22giving us 20 times faster transfer speeds compared to USB 2 that we get on the cheaper 15 and 15 plus.
02:28Now interestingly Apple didn't mention anything about well battery life but also charging speeds
02:33I'd hoped that with the switch to USB-C and potentially you know Thunderbolt or USB 4
02:38that we might get some increase in wired charging speeds but alas no unfortunately. The only real
02:43benefit I can see apart from having the more ubiquitous USB-C which obviously is what the Mac
02:47and the iPad uses is the faster transfer speeds and if you are taking a pro raw or pro res video
02:52off your phone currently it's a bit of a nightmare so this will definitely make it easier and finally
02:57in terms of design it wouldn't be a new iPhone without a couple of new colors with the Pros
03:01coming in natural blue white and black titanium flavors all very muted compared to the fun colors
03:07that we get on the regular iPhone 15s but having a matte black option is very nice and I'm a bit of
03:12a sucker for this deep blue but which would you go for? Now on the inside the Pro models get the
03:17new A17 Pro chip in terms of the processor up to 10% faster, double the number of neural engine
03:23cores, they've also added an AV1 decoder for faster video streaming but I think most significantly
03:28they've fully redesigned the graphics chip which now like flagship Android rivals now supports
03:32hardware ray tracing in games like Diablo 4 which I've got here and maybe a couple of others there's
03:38not a whole lot right now but hopefully devs will implement it in more games now it's on iPhone.
03:42Now this video is mainly about the Pro and Pro Max but I do have to mention the fact that once again
03:48the regular iPhones the 15 and 15 plus still have a 60 hertz display no promotion no high refresh
03:54for a 2023 phone which costs upwards of a thousand pounds it's a little bit unforgivable and I really
04:00don't understand it everything else about the 15s the design the chip the A16 the camera is
04:05actually a pretty significant upgrade but you're just not really going to see much of that extra
04:09performance when you're limited to a 60 hertz screen so now one rumor that did not come true
04:15was around bigger batteries unfortunately there was no mention of this no bigger batteries no new
04:20efficiency claims for the new chip so same as last year it seems but I just hope we see some
04:24improvements to the battery health the longevity of the battery because my 14 Pro Max after a year
04:29is down to 89 percent okay last but not least the camera and the iPhone 15 Pros have an upgraded 48
04:36megapixel main camera with a larger sensor photos are also now 24 megapixels by default rather than
04:4112 they've improved their smart HDR tech and promise much better portraits and low light
04:46and I can't wait to test this properly but the headline has to be this new five times telephoto
04:52lens which is exclusive to the bigger Pro Max and this replaces the three times optical zoom that
04:57the regular 15 Pro still has and Apple are very proud of this new 120 millimeter five times zoom
05:04lens it has a 25 percent larger sensor an impressively wide f 2.8 aperture and also an
05:09upgraded 3D sensor shift OIS so it should be the brightest most stable five times zoom we've seen
05:15on a phone I also like this new ability to tap the one times icon here and it'll crop in slightly
05:21giving us a couple of different focal lengths both 15 pros can now record 4k 60 pro res video
05:27up from 4k 30 previously and you can also save those huge files to an external storage drive
05:33via the usb-c port the 15 pros also support spatial video which is apple's new kind of 3d
05:38video which is coming soon and then can be played back on the upcoming vision pro headset
05:44and to round out the specs the 15 pros also support wi-fi 6e we have a second gen ultra
05:49wideband chip or uwb and of course it will ship running ios 17 now I have only had like an hour
05:55to play with a new iphone so far so lots of questions lots of things I want to test and I
05:59will have my full unboxing and review coming very soon so make sure you've hit that subscribe button
06:02you don't miss that video but first impressions it's a pretty decent upgrade the design refresh
06:07particularly the lighter weight is a very welcome change as is usb-c and I'm glad that all iphone
06:1115s have it would have been good to see high refresh on the regular 15s also would have been
06:15good to see faster charging and I'm also not convinced everyone wants a five times optical
06:19zoom if it were like the galaxy s23 ultra which has four lenses you have the benefit of the three
06:23times and the ten times but with the iphone 15 pros the pro max is still three lenses and they've
06:29just switched out the three to a five and I personally really like the three times for that
06:34field of view particularly for portraits you could just buy the regular 15 pro if you still want that
06:38three times but I'm curious how the quality is going to be on the pro max at sort of three or
06:43four times zoom before you hit that new five times lots of questions still to answer lots of
06:47things to test but finally in terms of pricing it is pretty much the same as before we're talking
06:51999 for the 15 pro and 1199 for the 15 pro max and that's the same in pounds and dollars although
06:58while that is a hundred pounds more than last year for the pro max that does now start 256 gigs of
07:03storage as opposed to 128 so that mitigates it a little bit anyway lots more videos to come make
07:08sure you have subscribed and let me know what you make of the 15 series and whether you're tempted
07:11to upgrade in the comments below thank you so much for watching guys and i'll see you next time
07:15right here well not right here probably back at the studio but right here on the tech chat
