00:00Good morning if you're joining us in the middle of the night. Welcome to Australia for round 17 of the MotoGP World Championships.
00:07Just four rounds to go, 148 points up for grabs and the stakes sky-high as we head into today's 13-lap sprint.
00:16Jorge Martin here, starting on pole position for the third year running in Australia.
00:20The first ever sprint race though, and Jorge Martin pulled out a stunning lap in tricky conditions earlier today.
00:28The track was still a little bit damp, but he was leads ahead of his rivals, and particularly ahead of his tighter rival,
00:34Feko Bagnaia, 10 behind in the standings. Bagnaia starts his worst qualifying since Jerez at round 4.
00:43So which way will that 10-point gap go today with 12 up for grabs?
00:47In between them on the grid, Marc Marquez lands up second. He's looked sharp in the wet and the dry.
00:52A few seagulls. Feko Bagnaia having second base of action already down towards Turn 1.
00:57And rounding out the front row alongside Marquez is the enigmatic Maverick Vinales.
01:02Who knows what he'll give today? It has, Neil, been a weekend of challenges from wild winds to even wilder rain.
01:09And of course the local wildlife, which we've already seen down there at Turn 1.
01:13What do you reckon we're going to get in these next 13 laps?
01:15Well, it's going to depend if this man can convert his pole position into a good start,
01:19because Plan A will be to attack straight away.
01:23The only thing I think that's going to be positive for everybody is the fact that,
01:28you know, with that hard front tyre, it's going to take a couple of laps
01:31before it's really, really in perfect conditions, especially for the right-hand corners.
01:36Look at that, they are spots of rain.
01:37They're in the air.
01:38We felt them earlier when we were down on the grid, then it stopped.
01:42So riders will be seeing that on their visors.
01:45That is a fact. It's mental rain, so it will be evaporating as soon as it hits the track.
01:50But not to feel in those kinds of conditions, though.
01:53You like to Martin and Pagnaia.
01:55How many risks are you willing to take?
01:57Yeah, not many.
01:58Look how fast they're going on this warm-up lap.
02:00It's one of the fastest warm-up laps I've seen,
02:01because they're trying to generate heat in that front tyre.
02:05They are pushing hard.
02:06Only two riders not gone with a hard front.
02:08Juanmi and Alex Rins.
02:10Three riders have gone with the medium rear, which I am baffled by.
02:14John Anzacco, Marco Bisecchi and Lorenzo Salvadori.
02:17They were said it's a safety tyre, in theory,
02:19with a treated edge to deal with this track, which is so rigorous on the tyres.
02:24Yeah, this is the hardest track of all,
02:27and especially with the new asphalt for this year.
02:30So it's going to be super abrasive.
02:34Here we go.
02:3513 laps of Phillip Island.
02:37Wow.
02:38A sprint race around most racetracks are exciting.
02:40Put them around the best racetrack in the world.
02:44Wind them up and let them go.
02:45We are ready to get racing there.
02:47What have we got to come over the next 20 minutes?
02:4913 laps.
02:51I suggest that you hang on tight for this one.
02:54It should be a wild ride.
02:56They've had very little dry track time
02:59as they crouch down and get ready to race here.
03:02They've been held a long time.
03:04The lights are on.
03:05They go out and we are underway.
03:07They look like a solid start from everyone,
03:08but Marquez just weaving a little bit.
03:10Pekka van Jaar had to avoid Maverick Vinales,
03:13who was just standing still off the start there.
03:15Oh, but Marquez has gone really wide in turn one.
03:18He's going to lose tons of positions there.
03:20Marquez dropping right down the order.
03:22So it's Martín who's leading,
03:24from Bisecchi in second place,
03:26and then Maverick Vinales recovered so well
03:28into the first corner.
03:29Yes, Maverick got a terrible start,
03:30got swallowed up by the whole pack really.
03:33He was down to about six or seven,
03:34but had a fantastic turn two.
03:36A lot of people misjudged that turn one,
03:39that first run down there is so tough,
03:41especially with the sidewind.
03:42Oh, Binder, that's aggressive.
03:43And he's really aggressive on Maverick Vinales,
03:46and that's going to allow as well
03:47Enea Bastianini to come through on Vinales.
03:50So it's Martín leading.
03:51Is Vinales going to fight back? No.
03:53That was so aggressive from Brad Binder,
03:55but that's what happens.
03:55It's lap one into turn four.
03:57You know someone's going to have a go.
03:59Martín's checking out.
04:00More often than not,
04:00it's Brad Binder having a go as well, isn't it?
04:02He was in that kind of position last year,
04:04if you remember,
04:05running second for much of this race.
04:07Finished just off the podium in the main race a year ago.
04:11Marquez, he just was wide at turn one.
04:13It was like he had second evasive action in some way.
04:15I really want to see that again
04:17as he drops inside down into FG corner.
04:19No way through on Morbidelli.
04:21No, there was a half a gap there.
04:22If he'd have gone for it,
04:23that would have been contact
04:24and that wouldn't have ended well.
04:25So is he going to try and dive up the inside
04:28into the last corner?
04:28It's optimistic, of course.
04:30Does it need a second invitation?
04:32But will that affect his exit?
04:33It normally does here.
04:35Yeah, I think, yeah.
04:37The only question, Mark,
04:38is how good he is coming out of that final corner.
04:40He seems to always find a couple of tenths of a second
04:42and he's even attacking Marik Mijanovic.
04:44They're having to lean into the windmill
04:46as they drop down into Doohan's corner.
04:48They're leaning before they even get on the brakes down there.
04:51Tarkov's gone wide.
04:52It's so tricky into turn one with the wind.
04:55Jack Miller's made up five positions off the start,
04:56but it's his teammate, Brad Binder,
04:58the big mover from 11th on the grid.
05:00He's up into fourth
05:01as Jorge Martín is checking out at the front,
05:04just like he did in the only race we had last year,
05:07the main race, which was on the Saturday.
05:09Yeah, and now, already,
05:10Martín will relax a little bit.
05:12He'll see his body.
05:13Lucini's got 0.6 of a second.
05:15Also, he's done the first lap.
05:16That front tyre temperature's perfect now.
05:19He can really attack.
05:20Now it's a case of doing two qualifying laps,
05:23trying to get a gap and see if he can control it.
05:25Let's not forget, in theory,
05:27I haven't seen quite yet,
05:27Marko Vizekli's got the medium rear tyre in,
05:30the one that's, I don't know,
05:31it's got harder treated edge
05:33to deal with the rigours of this circuit.
05:35You'd think that would take some time
05:37to get going.
05:38You'd think that the riders on the soft behind him
05:41should be able to power past easily,
05:42but he is.
05:43The stop gap on his teammate,
05:44he's out of shape there into MG,
05:47and he gets it dropped down to the apex,
05:49and Bagnaia needs to get through quickly.
05:51Yeah, he does.
05:52Well, the gap's growing.
05:52It's 0.8 of a second in the lead now
05:55for Jorge Martín,
05:56and like I said,
05:58once he gets across that line,
05:59he'll see his pit board, 0.8 of a second.
06:01He can use those flowing lines.
06:02He can really attack.
06:03Look at the slingshot Brad Binder was trying to get
06:06compared to the turning of that Ducati,
06:08just turning almost underneath Binder
06:10as they come down the line now.
06:12It's Martín leading.
06:13Marc Márquez has gone through on Fastidini.
06:15He's having to work really hard,
06:17but he's picking him off one by one, Neil.
06:19Yeah, he is.
06:20Márquez is about half a second slower
06:23than Jorge Martín, who's leading,
06:24but he's faster than all the other riders
06:26in front of him.
06:27He's on a mission.
06:28He's got a fast race pace.
06:29We know that.
06:30It's just that mistake in the first corner
06:32could potentially have cost him the win.
06:34Yeah, we need to see it again, don't we?
06:35Here goes Peco Bagnaia lining up a move now.
06:38He knows he's got to go.
06:39Oh, it was a risk from Bagnaia,
06:42and Bezzecchi, I have to say,
06:44just closes the door on him.
06:47Yeah, and a little bit further back,
06:48I just saw it.
06:49Is that Momodelli?
06:49He's passed off Vignale.
06:51Vignale's got bullied out of the way yet again.
06:53And then Márquez bullied Binder,
06:55and that's not something you say that often,
06:57is it, about Brad Binder?
06:58But as he went through,
06:59opened the door,
07:00and Fastidini came past also.
07:03Track limits warning, Neil,
07:04for our race leader.
07:05Yeah, that's not ideal.
07:06It's a narrow race,
07:07so I can tell you what,
07:08when you come out of that last corner,
07:09you use a lot of kerb.
07:10It's really easy to touch the green there.
07:12You'd think now,
07:13as Bastidini looks for a way through on Marc Márquez,
07:16you would think now
07:17that these tyres have got a lot in them.
07:19This is a tyre that lasted the race distance last year.
07:22It's his half race distance.
07:24However, on the flip side,
07:26we've got a brand new track surface,
07:27and no one's done enough laps to know.
07:29No, no, and it is abrasive.
07:31We know that the World Superbikes were here
07:33earlier in the year.
07:34They had to do a mandatory pit stop
07:36because the tyre wouldn't do full race distance.
07:40Here we go with Bagnaglia, finally gets through.
07:42He's going to go straight though
07:43because the bike's moving and wobbling.
07:45The wind, you can see how much the wind's pushing
07:47as well from the inside.
07:48Absolutely, he lunged, didn't he, down there,
07:50just almost as if to say to Marco Bisecchi,
07:52I am coming through, mate.
07:54You've got to know that I am here,
07:56and he's done well to bring it back down.
07:57So Bagnaglia now up into second place.
07:59He said, Neil, before the weekend,
08:01two second places might be my best bet,
08:03knowing how strong Martine is here.
08:05Yeah, this is Martine's track.
08:07Actually, if you think though,
08:08we're in Buriram in Thailand next weekend,
08:11and Martine was fast there as well.
08:13It was a great race last year, wasn't it,
08:15between himself, Bagnaglia, and Brad Binder.
08:18There is Binder now, just losing touch with Bastinini,
08:21who I have to say has done really well
08:22from tenth on the grid.
08:24Marquez is on the front row,
08:25and they are now together in track.
08:27They are battling themselves
08:29for third in the championship.
08:30Bastinini ahead of Marquez by two points
08:33in that particular battle.
08:34So the gap at the front is sitting at one second.
08:37Can Bagnaglia put a couple of good laps together
08:41to try and claw down Jorge Martine,
08:43force him into a mistake?
08:44It's been a season of mistakes, hasn't it, Gareth?
08:48Absolutely, yeah.
08:48They've all made them.
08:50Six in races for Pekka Bagnaglia throughout the season,
08:56four for Martine in races,
08:58but then you add in the qualifying crashes
08:59and things like that,
09:01it seems like no one's wanted to win it.
09:03No one's wanted to take an advantage.
09:05Here comes Marc Marquez now.
09:06He's got a lovely run, hasn't he, on Verzecki.
09:09Not going to be enough.
09:09Verzecki running really deep down into Duhiggs,
09:13but Marc Marquez, Neil,
09:14is the fastest rider on track by a margin.
09:17Yeah, that doesn't surprise me at all.
09:19And I'll tell you what, he's going to risk everything.
09:22The passing maneuver at this track,
09:24he's into turn four.
09:25Marc's really good into it.
09:26This is out of two.
09:27We're going to go down through the stoner corner,
09:29turn three, and he's going to set to the right-hand side.
09:33Actually, Verzecki's made a mistake there, gone wide.
09:36Marquez around the outside is never going to work.
09:38It isn't, not with Verzecki on the inside of him,
09:40because there is no love lost between the pair of them.
09:43And Verzecki, just as soon as he saw that
09:46lilac bike on his outside,
09:47made sure that he just blocked his way through.
09:50But Marquez is all over the back of Verzecki now.
09:52No love lost is the biggest understatement.
09:54It's a hatred.
09:55These two have come together on track on so many occasions,
09:58and nine times out of ten, it's Marco Verzecki who's unfortunately
10:02ended up running off the track.
10:04So Verzecki is going to leave no room now.
10:06He'll probably even go defensive down here into MG.
10:10Yep, middle of the track.
10:11That's defensive.
10:14Yeah, Marc Marquez is racing though.
10:16I will say he's just a lap which would have put him third on the grid.
10:20And that's here in this sprint race.
10:22The clouds loom overhead.
10:23We're okay for now.
10:24We're on board with an Airbastinini now.
10:26Looking at the rear of...
10:28Look at Marquez just turning it underneath.
10:30Marco Verzecki, incredible!
10:31He's alongside him before he even gets to the line.
10:33Yep, that is incredible.
10:36You wonder if it's going to use a lot of tyre by doing that.
10:38But you'd think so.
10:39But then again, as we know, it's a tyre that should last the race.
10:44Last year's winner, Johan Zarco, has crashed out.
10:47And also, we know how good Marc Marquez is around left-handers.
10:50And he's shown it, hasn't he, this weekend,
10:52through that corner and through the likes of Stoner Corner.
10:56He was the strongest rider in the second sector of the racetrack.
11:00Through here.
11:01Bastinini's man on track.
11:02He's the leader.
11:0327.8, and the gap is up to 1.4 seconds.
11:07Bastinini's really wide there.
11:08Yeah, that was another one.
11:09He was looking, lining up a move on Verzecki.
11:12But Verzecki's having this, you said it,
11:13riding in the middle of the racetrack, doing everything he can.
11:15Oh, someone crashed in the background coming out of Turn 4.
11:18I don't know who it was.
11:19It might have been Acosta.
11:20It was Pedro.
11:21It was Alex Marquez, by the looks of things.
11:22Right.
11:23Pedro Acosta, meanwhile, is down in 12th.
11:25Not got it working here.
11:28So Alex Marquez has crashed out.
11:30He started in 8th.
11:34There he is.
11:34I'm not sure whether that was a coming together or what,
11:36but it was a bit chaotic back there.
11:41Between Brad Binder and Raul Fernandez, not much to choose.
11:45Marquez is going to have Bagnaia here.
11:47Look at that.
11:47Look how much he makes up in Turn 11.
11:50And that's a left-hander.
11:51That's, I mean, it's an anti-clockwise track anyway,
11:52so there's plenty of them.
11:53But that's his skill.
11:54Watch him here.
11:55Can he pull it tight here?
11:56No, he's going to try and get the run.
11:58He's going to try and get a bit of a slipstream.
12:00He's not quite close enough.
12:01He's going to get a slipstream about now,
12:02but he certainly won't be able to do anything in the braking zone.
12:06We also know that's the one place on this circuit
12:09that the GT24, with that extra travel that it has
12:13on its rear ride height device,
12:14just seems to get that bit more purchase.
12:17Yeah, look at that.
12:180.3 of a second.
12:19He's going to, if he wants to win this race,
12:21he's going to have to attack straight away on this lap.
12:24There's still seven laps to go.
12:26I thought he was going to go at the southern loop there
12:28through Stoners.
12:29Yeah, he thought about it.
12:30Oh!
12:31Got him sideways there,
12:32but a little bit too sideways.
12:33He snapped on him.
12:35That was trust then, wasn't it?
12:38Dropping right in on the brakes.
12:39He is like a rash on the rear on Feko Bagnaia.
12:46And again, just look at the ground made up
12:49just through the middle of the left-hand corners.
12:52It's like Bagnaia's stopping it a bit in the corners,
12:55sort of firing it into his rear on the brakes.
12:56No corner speed, but Mark can't get past.
12:59Is he going to line something up down to NG here now?
13:02It's a classic.
13:03Oh, again, Bagnaia right in the middle of the racetrack.
13:06All the while, Bagnaia is settling for second here.
13:08He's not thinking about getting after Jorge Martín.
13:11He's keeping tyres and bike underneath him
13:14so that he can take second and minimize the damage.
13:18Mark Marcus has to find a way through.
13:20He's had a lap trying to do so and still not managed it.
13:27Okay, look at that initial drive out of the corner.
13:33Surely not going to be close enough.
13:34No.
13:36Great shot from the helicopter down at Dillard's corner.
13:38And again, you can be a little bit wide down there
13:40into what looks right,
13:42because then you've got the line down into the southern loop.
13:44He's so right, though.
13:45Bagnaia is set up for second
13:47and he's trying to save his tyre.
13:48You can see the way he's riding.
13:49He's trying to be as smooth as possible.
13:51Meanwhile, the man at the front, he's pulled the pin.
13:53Another fastest lap.
13:54The gap's up to 2.6 seconds.
13:56You do feel like they are trying to prepare for the races.
14:02But Marcus has lunged down into middle.
14:04Actually, actually gets it perfect.
14:07He actually brought it down.
14:08You thought it was a lunge, but he had set that up.
14:11He watched Bagnaia pull across on the track in front of him,
14:14but he takes another couple of points out of Bagnaia's account.
14:18What would Gigi think about that one?
14:20When does the point come in the championship
14:22where Marcus has to run Taylor and Charlie for Feco Bagnaia?
14:26Never.
14:28He doesn't.
14:28He won't, and he won't do, obviously.
14:30Yeah, I know, you know.
14:33You did ask me.
14:34True, true.
14:35Here comes Bastinini.
14:36He doesn't do it either.
14:37Mathematically, they've still got a shot at the championship.
14:41And through you go.
14:42Both Marcus and Bastinini.
14:44Feco Bagnaia is struggling.
14:45Really struggling.
14:48I mean, if you think Marcus was behind him at the start of this lap.
14:52Navarrete had obviously watching on as more points go the way of Jorge Martins.
14:5716 the gap as things stand.
14:59Jack Millar, I'm afraid to say, has crashed out of the race.
15:03We're told he's okay.
15:04Five laps to go in the Australian Grand Prix.
15:07And the Aussie, unfortunately, has gone out.
15:11We haven't seen any of these crashes further back.
15:13I don't know whether it's people coming together or mistakes all made alone.
15:20Zarco, Marcus.
15:22That's Alex Marquez and Jack Millar all taking an early back.
15:27I'll tell you who's having a good race coming forward.
15:29It's Fabio Di Giano Antonio.
15:30He's currently in seventh place, closing in fast on Maverick Mignoli.
15:34He's, just say, his fastest lap of the race.
15:37He had a huge crash at Turn 1, by all accounts, earlier.
15:40We just never saw it.
15:42We were saying earlier, Dorner and the camera work.
15:45This weekend, in particular, has been second to none.
15:49But, like, there's been a couple, haven't we, that we haven't seen around here.
15:52Because it's just, things are happening all the time in every single corner.
15:56Hey, what about this man?
15:57Five laps to go, he's got a three-second lead.
16:00I mean, he's just been on another planet.
16:02Well, he was last year.
16:03Yeah, got the start, attacked straight away.
16:05Did that first lap, let the front tyre get up to temperature, settled,
16:09then put his head down.
16:10And it was literally two, three, four, five qualifying laps, all in the 27s,
16:15whilst everybody else was doing 28s.
16:17They weren't even thinking about saving his tyre.
16:19Only rider in the 27s, apart from Martine at the moment, is Fabio Di Giano Antonio.
16:27Down into Turn 1, a little wobble there from Martine.
16:31Comfortable gap for him, 3.333 seconds.
16:35Between himself and Marc Marquez.
16:39Vinales has just done a personal best lap,
16:42but finding it hard to get through on Marco Bisecchi.
16:46Yeah, make sure Bisecchi's tyre choice is holding him up now at this point in the race.
16:51I thought it would have come better, not worse.
16:54But still, they will be having a really close look at Bisecchi,
16:57as Maverick Vinales now, who's looking to find a way through.
17:01But we've seen Bisecchi is a nuisance to get through.
17:04Yeah, he's hard to pass.
17:06I tell you what, Maverick has lined that up quite nicely.
17:10Where can Maverick get past?
17:12Or is Di Giano going to get past him whilst he's trying to work out that puzzle?
17:16Bisecchi's data is going to be what they're all looking at
17:19at the Ducati later on today, isn't it?
17:21How that medium tyre has worked.
17:23Because Jorge Martins setting laps with the soft tyre
17:29that are clearly a second quicker, more than a second quicker than Bisecchi.
17:34Okay, so what do we say the natural gap between them is?
17:37Half a second perhaps this year, 4 tenths?
17:40And the calculations will have to be done like they were done,
17:42I'm just thinking about last year, Neil,
17:44where Jorge Martins went with a soft tyre,
17:46and in the end, the medium was the option.
17:49I just wonder, those calculations will mean it's a bit of a head-scratcher tomorrow.
17:54Yeah, you can see there, Besecchi's got no exit speed,
17:56so obviously it's a harder compound.
17:59It must be spinning a little bit more.
18:01Maverick's in a perfect position there, lovely pass.
18:04Great pass up the inside, got sucked in a little bit.
18:07It can happen into Turn 1 with a wind.
18:10That's going to encourage Fabio Di Gianantonio just to...
18:14I mean, the gap's only half a second.
18:16First and best lap for Marc Marquez on that last one.
18:18The gap's gone from 3.3 down to 2.8 now between Martin and Marquez.
18:23Martin obviously rolling off, but what it just says to me, Neil,
18:26is that there's still pace in that tyre at mid-race distance,
18:30and for Marc Marquez.
18:31Yeah, absolutely.
18:32And I think you're right, though, Martin's controlling it.
18:34Once you get a lead of three seconds with three laps to go,
18:37it's such a good feeling.
18:39The race is done.
18:40It's just then about just being precise.
18:41I know what you're thinking about last year.
18:43He had two seconds.
18:44He had one and a half seconds with three laps to go into last year,
18:48and got beat.
18:49So, but yeah, three seconds with three laps to go, job done.
18:53I want to ask the question, though,
18:54without that first corner, whatever it was for Marc Marquez,
18:58would he have been in the mix as Pedro Acosta goes down here?
19:02I think, yeah, Marquez would have been in the mix.
19:04Marquez had the pace to go with Jorge and Martin.
19:07Is he okay?
19:08Bike's still running.
19:09They need to hit that kill switch quickly,
19:11or they'll be peppering all their pals with gravel down there, the marshals.
19:16Ooh, another attempt from Maverick Vinales.
19:23Oh, he's got the perfect up.
19:24He'll be able to pass him, actually, before the braking's on.
19:26He'll be able to level him so he doesn't have to outbrake him now.
19:29Oh, no!
19:31Oh, that's horrific.
19:32Marco Pesecchi just got dragged into the back of Maverick Vinales' bike,
19:36and they both go down.
19:38Maverick's up on his feet.
19:40Marco Pesecchi, he was just so close between them,
19:43and as he went through, he dragged Pesecchi.
19:46He dragged him into it.
19:47It's your worst nightmare, over 200 miles an hour,
19:50and literally, that's what's happened.
19:52Marco Pesecchi ends up being a passenger, watch this.
19:54So, Vinales passes him.
19:56He's done nothing wrong.
19:57Vinales passes him.
19:58He's done nothing wrong,
19:59but then he just gets sucked into the braking zone,
20:01and there's nowhere to go.
20:03I mean, that impact at, I'm going to say, 180 miles an hour.
20:08Horrific.
20:09We've seen it before.
20:09It's your worst nightmare, look how quick that is.
20:11Oh, and it was onto a front lock, wasn't it, for Marco Pesecchi?
20:15Oh, I'll tell you what,
20:18Vez had his arms tucked in as well,
20:20and that's meant he's absolutely been put through a washing machine there.
20:23Oh, Brad Binder's now gone down at the Miller hairpin.
20:26They are dropping like flies with Acosta also going out.
20:30Here's the move.
20:33Just a little bit wider because Morbidelli was coming through,
20:35and Brad Binder.
20:38Well, that is awful to see.
20:40Yeah, that was a horrible crash.
20:41Good to hear.
20:42It looks like at least Vez is conscious down there
20:46as Jorge Martín crosses the line with one to go.
20:49The yellow flag in the first corner.
20:51He's got 2.1 seconds.
20:53The advantage, he's really rolled up, 28.8.
20:56I don't think it's tyre problems or anything like that.
20:59It's control, isn't it?
21:00Total control, total dominance.
21:03I mean, pole position by half a second around this really tight track.
21:07Everyone knows it.
21:07It's a short lap.
21:09Normally, if you get put, like, a half a second round here
21:11is like one and a half seconds at Silverstone.
21:15Oh, that's good to see.
21:16Like, that's obviously Marco's conscience,
21:19but it's the worst crash imaginable.
21:21You hit the back of another rider, you take him out,
21:23but Pesecchi went over the top.
21:25It's like a high side.
21:27It's such a violent crash.
21:29You never want to see that.
21:33Jorge Martín, meanwhile, has controlled this race from the front.
21:37He was superb in qualifying,
21:39and it's the qualifying lap,
21:41dancing through damp patches, Neil, that has set up this win.
21:44Yeah, you saw right.
21:45Sat on pole position.
21:47He looked confident.
21:47I actually saw him with his girlfriend on the grid,
21:50and he looked probably the most relaxed I've seen him.
21:52It's quite...
21:53Do you know what it's like?
21:54He's an incredibly intense individual,
21:55so he knew if he could get the start, he'd got the pace,
21:58and that's exactly what happened.
21:59The best thing for him was Mark Marquez making that mistake in Turn 1.
22:02That meant he could break away from the rest,
22:05and there you go, job done.
22:06Marquez is going to be the challenge tomorrow.
22:08There's a few spots of rain out there as well,
22:10I just saw on the camera lens,
22:12as they come through the final corner for the final time,
22:15and Jorge Martín, just a little twitch on the grass
22:18as he comes to the line.
22:19Mark Webber waving the flag for a Grand Prix winner.
22:23Or a sprint winner, should I say,
22:24in Jorge Martín here in Australia.
22:27Mark Marquez is second,
22:28Enea Bastidini is third,
22:30and well, Peko Banyai are only able to take fourth place today.
22:37And that means the gap has opened up once more, Neil.
22:40Another six points into Martín's account.
22:43It's 16 with three and a half to go.
22:46Yeah, it's 16 points,
22:48and you have to say, of course,
22:50Jorge Martín, his favorite for tomorrow's race.
22:54But what we learned over the years,
22:55well, the Frank Giudicati team do their homework on Saturday night
23:00and usually find something.
23:01The issue with that, Neil,
23:03is nobody's done enough running on the harder option tyres.
23:08Nobody knows how the soft tyre is going to fare in a long race distance,
23:12and there hasn't been enough running to pull through that much data.
23:16No, that's true.
23:17That is true.
23:18That's going to make it difficult.
23:20But Banyai is against it.
23:23Six seconds behind.
23:24That's half a second of lap time more, isn't it?
23:27But he looked, he had nothing.
23:29He looked uncomfortable, didn't he?
23:31Remarkable.
23:33Well, Marc Marquez was excellent, wasn't he,
23:35after he had that mistake at Turn 1.
23:38I still, we haven't seen a replay of it.
23:39We'll have to have a really good look at it,
23:41but that's definitely something to see the overhead,
23:45see what happened.
23:46Turn 1, as we've just seen in that incident with Verzecki,
23:49Maverick Vinales, was so treacherous today.
23:52Yeah.
23:53You could see them leaning at the end of the straight into the corner
23:56before they've even got there.
23:57Yeah, in the braking zone, they already had a lot of lean angle.
24:02Oh, how good is that to see?
24:04So good to see, because I've got to say,
24:05when Verzecki was lying there, I thought he was unconscious.
24:09There's no-one at blame, no-one at fault here.
24:11No, Maverick slipstreamed past him.
24:13There's room to cut across.
24:14He's not cut across violently in front of him, which is dangerous.
24:17Maverick's done absolutely nothing wrong there.
24:20And we've heard...
24:21How many riders have we heard being told,
24:24when a rider's in front of you in a braking zone,
24:26what happens is, basically, there's no force,
24:30there's no G-force on all the wings,
24:32and it just sucks you into the rider.
24:34Well, do you know what we'd seen on the previous lap, Neil?
24:37Maverick ran it a little...
24:38They had different braking markers.
24:40They had a different braking zone themselves, didn't they,
24:42between the Aprilia, which carries a bit more corner speed.
24:45Verzecki was almost braking deeper in.
24:48And it was just...
24:50Just one of those things.
24:51But you end up in that dirty air, don't you?
24:58Well, it looks like both riders have got away with it, anyway.
25:01Let's hope so, let's hope so.
25:02I saw Maverick was rushing to take his glove off,
25:05as if he was in some serious pain with his left hand.
25:09So let's hope...
25:10I mean, if they're unscathed from that,
25:11that just is testament to all the safety equipment.
25:14Delight for Jorge Martín.
25:16Back on the top step in a sprint race.
25:20What a season it's been.
25:23Older Gian Antonio's got a tyre pressure problem.
25:26In these conditions, in these temperatures,
25:28on not-hard-braking circuit.
25:31Yeah, that's a big surprise.
25:34Do you know what I'm thinking?
25:35For the first time, he's gone backward and forward,
25:38and I've swung from one rider to the next.
25:41Having seen that performance,
25:43it's the first time I'm thinking,
25:45I'll tell you what,
25:46I actually genuinely think Jorge Martín's got this.
25:52Shake hands between them.
25:59Another podium for Marc Marquez.
26:05I couldn't quite hear what they were talking about.
26:08Jorge Martín and Eneo Bastanini, Marc Marquez.
26:13That is his sixth sprint.
