00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann and today we're going to be talking about
00:04the viral trend on social media called cortisol phase. Cortisol phase is not an
00:10official medical diagnosis. The phrase has become popular on social media with
00:16influencers and content creators using it as a name to describe when someone
00:21experiences a puffy, inflamed or round face. Through videos on social media they
00:28suggest that these symptoms are caused by high levels of the stress hormone
00:33called cortisol. According to WebMD cortisol is a hormone that is made by
00:40the adrenal glands which are located at the top of your kidneys. Cortisol plays
00:45an important role in helping to regulate some of your bodily functions including
00:50your mood. Experts have debunked the claims made by social media influencers
00:56explaining that high levels of stress is unlikely to cause facial puffiness
01:00with National World's professor Robert Thomas explaining that there is no
01:05direct link between the two.
