Part 5 of 6 of the 1985 thriller. When a severed finger comes through the post to the police station, the authorities realize that koney will have to be found quickly in order to stop the kidnappers from losing patience. But hostage negotiator Simon fears what will happen if the IRA group sees the police there and arranges a different drop off plan with Geoffrey, Margaret and Andrew behind their back. But when the day comes the police begin to smell a rat, and the resulting chaos sees the situation end very badly indeed...

Starring Peter Barkworth, Harriet Walter, David Lyon, Nicholas Jones, Derek Thompson, Adrian Dunbar, Aingeal Grehan, John Kavanagh, Linda Spurrier and a young Susanna Reid. This episode sees the chance for the release of Frances and Clare Carr (though quite why they'd want to is anyone's guess), but the drop off goes very badly wrong. This is an exciting episode in what has continued to grip throughout it's 6 episodes. By the way, if you are wondering about the boring or odd picture stills for the videos, it seems I am now unable to edit my own video pictures, so these are Dailymotion's scren choices. Just in case you were wondering).

02:02How was Belfast?
02:03Eh, not a lead.
02:05What's going on?
02:07The car has rented a little office
02:09where the kidnappers can phone them in secret.
02:11Well, that's the idea.
02:13Hang on.
02:14Have you heard from them?
02:16Well, I keep it to myself.
02:18I've heard from nobody.
02:23I always think I'm being followed here.
02:25Ah, they couldn't follow a paper chase.
02:30Did you get Brook?
02:31Yes.
02:35Those safe phone isn't safe anymore.
02:37Are you afraid?
02:38Followed Andrew Paget.
02:40The bug's in the ventilation shaft.
02:43Here it is.
02:45Tom Ring Diamond.
02:48This is the third time you've asked them to ring us.
02:50Still, we did get three insertions for the price of two.
02:54Andrew, the deadline is at 12 o'clock.
02:57I hadn't forgotten.
03:00Tea or coffee?
03:02Tea, please.
03:04This cloak and dagger stuff.
03:06It's bloody uncomfortable.
03:09Hello?
03:11Any news, Margaret?
03:14No, Geoffrey, I'm sorry.
03:16Yeah, it's in the paper.
03:18I've seen it.
03:20I'll be over in an hour.
03:29He can't pay what he hasn't got.
03:31He had it.
03:32He had the two million they asked for.
03:38Is that coffee?
03:39I said I'll have a look.
03:52Mrs. Healy told me to have a clear eye.
03:54Yes, quite right.
03:56Moira, weren't Francis and Claire collecting pills?
04:00Claire's asthma pills, I doubt that.
04:03I don't remember, sir.
04:05Yes, that's right, because Francis asked me to remind her.
04:09And there were some things found in the car.
04:12Shopping and parcels. What happened to them?
04:14The police kept them.
04:27Good morning, Simon.
04:28Morning.
04:29Tom hasn't rung down.
04:32I don't know who can.
04:38Trying to find Francis and Claire
04:41is a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
04:43It's very difficult.
04:45But if you can identify where you were
04:49applying your needle
04:51and use a magnet,
04:53it may not be very difficult at all.
04:56Thank you, Moira.
04:59The police are banking on us leading them to the kidnappers.
05:04Don't open that.
05:09No metal.
05:10No explosives.
05:38Okay.
06:08Give me a sterile dish.
06:36It was severed, not very skilfully, above the second joint.
06:40It's from a mature female.
06:42Unaccustomed to rough work.
06:44About five feet eight, judging by the bone length.
06:47Was she alive?
06:49She was alive when this was done.
06:51There was also this ring.
06:56Anything under the fingernail?
06:58Blood, tissue, hairs.
07:01She certainly scratched someone.
07:03Particles of whitewash, brick dust.
07:06Is there a postal address under there, Mr McLachlan?
07:10Analysis might suggest an area.
07:12We're doing that now.
07:21It's hers.
07:24We'll need to keep it for the moment.
07:27PHONE RINGS
07:33Is she alive?
07:35We don't know.
07:38Can't you tell from the...?
07:41We think it was done when she was alive.
07:45Oh, thank God.
07:48Thank God. I thought I'd killed her.
07:50Oh?
07:52Why did you think that, Mr McLachlan?
07:58CLEARS THROAT
08:00You've been negotiating with the criminals?
08:03You'd know if I was. You're tapping my phone.
08:07Geoffrey, we must work together.
08:10You've got precisely nowhere.
08:12No, because you won't tell us what you're up to.
08:16Mr Kerr, supposing...
08:19Supposing you're dead hand over the money,
08:22you've no guarantee these animals are going to keep their part of the bargain.
08:26And judging by what we've seen so far, they'll not.
08:29You're from the North?
08:32That's right.
08:37Well, if you don't require me any further.
08:42Personally, someone had done that to my wife.
08:46I'd want justice.
08:48Justice? I want them found. I want them shot.
08:51Then help us.
08:53We've got to stay in the steel age.
08:56How the hell do you expect to find them with a card index system?
09:01If I thought you were at all competent, I...
09:04If you thought we were at all competent, what, Mr Kerr?
09:07Please, we've been through all this before.
09:24It's my fault.
09:27My fault.
09:29What are you talking about?
09:31If I hadn't told you about Francis and Andrew, this wouldn't have happened.
09:35Nonsense.
09:37The day after, you went back on your word.
09:42I sold the company.
09:44For less, so you could buy it back.
09:47It made no difference.
09:49It did.
09:51It did.
09:53They cut off her finger.
09:58All right, it did.
10:07Mess, mess, mess.
10:09What?
10:12I wish I could sleep. I wish I could work.
10:17I wish I could just get back to normal.
10:21I wish I could just get back to normal.
10:51No! No! No!
10:55Someone's got to change the dressing.
10:57No! No!
11:00No!
11:02No!
11:05No!
11:22What are you screaming at her for?
11:24She never touched you.
11:26I'm hot.
11:29I'm so hot, I'm on fire.
11:32Where's Claire?
11:33Sit still, will you? Sit still.
11:35What's the point? What's the point?
11:37Come on, you've got a bloody fever. You'll be really ill.
11:40You're worried about me, aren't you? I might be ill.
11:45Now, shut it.
11:48Let me get on with it.
11:52Are you a Catholic?
11:54What?
11:57Are you a Catholic?
12:01Can I have a priest?
12:04You won't need a priest.
12:06He's agreed to pay.
12:08Oh.
12:10He's agreed to pay.
12:12He's agreed to pay.
12:14He's agreed to pay.
12:16He's agreed to pay.
12:18He's agreed to pay.
12:21Again.
12:24He'll pay.
12:26This time.
12:29Don't give me hope.
12:34You should have let her do it.
12:36You're not cruel.
12:43Jesus!
12:46What do I have to do?
12:48You do cruel things, but you're not cruel.
12:51You're a bloody case.
12:53I've never met a woman like you.
12:55You should be smashed.
12:57Broken.
12:59You're contemptible.
13:02It doesn't hurt me to hurt people like you.
13:04Let me tell you that.
13:06I watched you.
13:09I watched you at that house.
13:11I watched you fill it up with junk.
13:14As if there'd been no bloody Sunday.
13:17From 1916.
13:19I watched you at that party.
13:21In your black dress.
13:23And your jewels.
13:25And I said,
13:27I'll have all that.
13:30Can I touch your breast?
13:34You didn't have to ask.
13:37I'm bloody well asking.
13:59Fuck.
14:29Fuck.
14:59Fuck.
15:18I'm sorry about all this teacher stuff.
15:20But we must all be clear what happens when.
15:25Now, the treasure trail starts here, at Longford.
15:28Where you, Geoffrey, collect the money from the bank.
15:32A million and a half weighs just over 600 weight.
15:35It will take around ten minutes to load.
15:40I imagine the kidnappers will be somewhere near the border.
15:44This sort of area.
15:47They've told us to go here.
15:49To a phone box outside Ballinanar.
15:51To get instructions.
15:53You must be at this box, Margaret.
15:55No later than.
15:57But I'm delivering the money.
15:59You should only expect Margaret to do it.
16:01Why me?
16:02Well, you've spoken to the kidnappers so much, you have their confidence.
16:05It can make a vital difference.
16:09It's up to you, of course.
16:12I'll step forward one volunteer.
16:28Where the hell is our company commander taking us to now?
16:36Right.
16:37Should be safe enough here.
16:39See?
16:40The route was bugged.
16:42How do you know that?
16:45What's that?
16:47A bugging detector.
16:50I'm sorry, Margaret.
16:51That was all a pretense.
16:53It's not a pretense.
16:55I'm sorry, Margaret.
16:56That was all a pretense.
16:58We need the guard to think that you're delivering the money.
17:04Margaret Healy will have the money.
17:06She'll be travelling in a white Passat estate.
17:11Geoffrey Carr will probably be with her.
17:15So.
17:16There'll be two white Passats.
17:18And you're the decoy.
17:19That's a relief.
17:20You will have the money, Andrew.
17:21Drawn by me from Kells.
17:22Not long for it.
17:25So what do Margaret and I draw from the Longford Bank?
17:28Newspapers.
17:31Now, just a minute.
17:32Now, I have the money.
17:34How do the kidnappers tell me where to take it?
17:36Margaret goes to the telephone box at Ballinanar as arranged.
17:40But she tells the kidnappers to phone another box near Kells.
17:43Now, you must be there spot on time, Andrew, to take that call.
17:46Yes, sir.
17:54Nice day for a picnic.
18:11Oh, no, no, no.
18:13How would you know?
18:15Your accent.
18:16Can't usually tell.
18:19What was it like when you killed somebody for the first time?
18:29I'll tell you what he's done.
18:31You need that.
18:34That's like your first woman.
18:37You want to get it over and get in that pub.
18:41Jesus.
18:43The bang.
18:45The bang.
18:47The jump.
18:51His wife came running out.
18:54I wasn't sure he was dead.
18:57I had to fire twice more.
19:01It was hard.
19:08I'll do that.
19:09Leave it.
19:15Are you going to pick up the money?
19:19Why?
19:20You and the other man.
19:29Please don't leave us alone with her.
19:34She won't touch you.
19:36Please.
19:45Well?
19:47Well?
19:48What are you staring at?
19:54What else can I do?
19:57It's what you always do.
19:59What?
20:01It's what you always do.
20:04What?
20:06What did you say?
20:08What did you say?
20:10What did you say?
20:12What did you say?
20:14You're hurting me.
20:15I will hurt you.
20:17If you believe I want to touch that...
20:19You do.
20:24I am trying to save our lives.
20:26And even if I have to sleep with that scum, I will do so.
20:29But don't you ever dare say that to me again.
20:37What about the heavy side?
20:38The heavy side?
20:40Like loading the money?
20:42Don't argue.
20:44You stay.
20:46Here it goes.
21:08It won't be long.
21:17Alpha 2 to Control.
21:19Alpha 2 to Control.
21:212, go ahead.
21:23Taking over from Alpha 4.
21:25Repeat.

21:32Taking over from Alpha 4.
21:34Repeat.
21:35Alpha 2 to Control.
21:36Repeat.
21:37Alpha 2 taking over from Alpha 4.
21:41Car has entered the Longford Bank.
21:43The cassette is a white estate.
21:46Registration number,
21:47YZN 385.
21:52Roger, Alpha 2.
21:54Here we go then, Jack.
21:56I can't even be sure the bastard's still in this area.
22:01We're covering every major road to the north.
22:03I know that, but you can't cover every reside, Liam.
22:05Look, one helicopter...
22:06And scare them off.
22:18Mr. Mitchell.
22:20That's all in order.
22:21If you sign this form, the money's ready.
22:25Transport will be on in a few minutes.
22:28In Wicklow, we call that brown.
22:30The white one's still been serviced.
22:33Jesus!
22:35When I came to collect it yesterday,
22:36you swore it would be ready.
22:38This is the same wheels, the same engine,
22:40and less than a clock.
22:41It's brown!
22:48Dermot!
22:52Dermot!
22:54Dermot!
22:55Dermot!
23:22Bloody garage!
23:23I'm going to be in that phone box in ten minutes.
23:25It'll take us twenty to get there.
23:54This is Healy leaving Lampford at the end of 55,
23:57direction Tavern, over.
23:59Roger.
24:05It must be significant that Murphy's Law
24:07was discovered by an Irishman.
24:09What?
24:10Anything can go wrong.
24:11It will.
24:15This is Healy on way to Balina Yard.
24:17Roger.
24:23Shit!
24:54Shit!
25:08This is Margaret.
25:09Ring Kingscourt 483.
25:13Hang on, Margaret.
25:14I tell you...
25:23Shit!
25:53Hello, Tom.
25:54Who's that?
25:55Andrew.
25:56What the hell's going on?
25:58I'm delivering.
25:59Quick, before this is tapped.
26:01Tapped?
26:02Listen, if the police are around,
26:03you forget the whole bloody thing.
26:05I try to avoid them.
26:06Tell me where to go.
26:07I'm sorry.
26:08I'm sorry.
26:09I'm sorry.
26:10I'm sorry.
26:11I'm sorry.
26:12I'm sorry.
26:13I'm sorry.
26:14I'm sorry.
26:15I'm sorry.
26:16I'm sorry.
26:17I'm sorry.
26:18I'm sorry.
26:19I'm sorry.
26:20I'm sorry.
26:21I'm sorry.
26:23Go to Clunis.
26:24Take the Monaghan Road and tell your...
26:40Is that a mural round the houses?
26:42I'll observe you, see if I was following.
26:44That's all right.
26:52She told...
26:53She told him to ring another number.
26:55King's Court 483.
26:57Do we tap it?
26:58There wasn't time.
27:03Two, go ahead.
27:08Stop her.
27:09And blow the whole thing.
27:20Come on.
27:22We're going to be released.
27:25I'll never be released.
27:28Don't be silly.
27:31That's silly.
27:53What are you worrying about?
27:55There was nobody following them.
28:04That's the way home.
28:06How far is it?
28:08Three, four miles.
28:09And we're in the middle of nowhere.
28:11It's not far.
28:12It's not far.
28:13It's not far.
28:14It's not far.
28:15It's not far.
28:16It's not far.
28:17It's not far.
28:18It's not far.
28:19It's not far.
28:20It's not far.
28:21Three, four miles.
28:22And we're in the north.
28:28Oh, no, not the jigsaw again.
28:31Anything but the jigsaw.
28:35Oh, come on, Clare.
28:37You know how hopeless I am.
28:42Whee!
28:51A million and a half.
28:54That's a lot of rustle.
29:03I should listen to that up in the north.
29:07If they get to hear it.
29:10What do you mean?
29:16I'd keep it for myself.
29:19And her.
29:24Don't put ideas into my head.
29:38You're screwing her.
29:42I haven't touched her.
29:49Not now, Kate.
29:50Not on a job.
29:57I'm raising her political conscience.
30:04Consciousness.
30:08You're jealous.
30:09Oh, Christ.
30:11I could see that coming a mile off.
30:13Christ.
30:14I could see that coming a mile off.
30:18Frank, not every woman wants you to fuck her.
30:23Not only most of them.
30:24That really worries me.
30:27Jesus.
30:39A kid.
30:41You're worth 20,000 of the one who are.
30:46Come on.
30:48We'll be millionaires in half an hour.
30:57That would be the big laugh, wouldn't it?
31:00If I took his money and his wife.
31:10I'm sorry.
31:41This is as far as I go.
31:44Lloyd's never deals with criminals.
31:47I don't even work for Lloyd's.
31:50Sure of your route?
31:52No.
31:57The gate must be about there.
32:01Hmm.
32:02What's the marker?
32:03Warning, poison, red letters.
32:06You've got half an hour.
32:08You've got half an hour.
32:09They'll wait 20 minutes, but no more.
32:13Good luck.
32:16Mine's a large, Jamison.
32:18No ice.
32:32Control.
32:33Alpha 4, go ahead.
32:34We've stopped the lady at Ballycon.
32:36She's carrying a number of parcels.
32:38Parcels?
32:40What's in them?
32:41Well, newspapers.
33:06Oh, my God.
33:36Oh, my God.
34:06Oh, my God.
34:36Oh, my God.
35:06Oh, yeah.
35:36Oh, my God.
36:01Oh, my God.
36:06Oh, my God.
36:37Oh, my God.
36:55All units.
36:59Andrew Padgett is six foot in height,
37:02has fair hair, pale complexion,
37:05blue eyes, slim build, age 34.
37:35Tom!
37:43What the hell, Capgee?
37:49Look how clever I'm being.
37:51This must be a record.
37:53How can it be a record, stupid?
37:54You don't know the time.
37:58Let me go!
38:00You've always had to be best.
38:02Have what you want.
38:03You've ruined my life!
38:06Oh, Claire.
38:09Ruined your life.
38:13Look, darling, stop this silly behaviour.
38:16This will all be over soon.
38:19Leave me alone.
38:20Just leave me alone.
38:24Smash it.
38:28The money was found at Oak's Farm Crossroads.
38:32What the hell is that?
38:37Where's it at?
38:39Old Hanlon's nearest.
38:45Here.
39:01Oh, my God.
39:32Come on, back!
39:33All right, I'm coming.
39:34Back!
39:37Give me that.
40:01Oh, my God.
40:32Oh, my God.
40:55Carson!
40:58This is a last warning.
41:01Come out without your weapons.
41:31Carson!
42:02Oh, my God.
42:19Well, at least we can move some of the money back, can't we?
42:28I do not want a receipt.
42:30£1,010,005.
42:32It's an odd number, sir, but that's exactly what we accounted for.
42:35Look, it is my money.
42:36It is my money, and I want it.
42:38I'm afraid, sir, it's going to have to be held for evidence.
42:42Evidence for what?
42:45Well, there's the inquest to begin with, and then...
42:47You shot an innocent man.
42:49It was an accident, Margaret.
42:51An accident.
42:52He was doing nothing criminal.
42:53He was trying to rescue my sister.
42:56Evidence.
42:57Evidence.
42:59You're keeping the money so we can't get her back.
43:01You're going to kill her and our little girl, too.
43:05I'll take her to the High Court. You can't hold that money.
43:09Another five minutes.
43:19I may have been seen getting back.
43:22He'll find us.
43:23Not before Willie gets us another safe house.
43:26How much did you give him?
43:27Ten thousand.
43:28Ten?
43:30You have to fix people.
43:37I don't trust him.
43:40He wouldn't drop me in it.
43:42He knows what he'd get.
43:45Don't you, Willie?
43:48But you've simply pursued us.
43:50You've given up all hope of finding them.
43:52That's not true.
43:53All right, then.
43:54Then tell me what you know, how far you've got.
43:57You know we can't do that.
43:58I mean, that might prejudice things for the future.
44:00Look, for God's sake, you want me to cooperate with you,
44:03but you've no intention of cooperating with me.
44:08All right, all right, I've had enough.
44:11I'll find them.
44:13All right, all right, I've had enough.
44:16I'll find them.
44:17Just like that, Mr Carr?
44:18Just like that, yes.
44:25How many reports have you filed on this case?
44:28Over 2,000, and there's still...
44:29All on cards, on little bits of paper.
44:33We have a procedure, Mr Carr.
44:35Are you using a computer? No, of course you're not.
44:37The Yorkshire Ripper inquiry was drowned in a sea of paper.
44:40Four lives could have been saved if a computer had been used.
44:45See, you've got the answer.
44:47Somewhere among all those little bits of paper, you've got the answer.
44:51We don't have the resources yet.
44:53No, but I do.
44:55My company has.
44:57And God knows why I didn't do this before.
45:00Do what?
45:02Yes, that's what I'll do. It must work.
45:05Yes, and I'll do the programme myself.
45:07So, you'll have to throw open all your information files to me.
45:13Now, that's impossible.
45:15Then I'll pay.
45:17And next time, it will all get through.
45:21But you can't ask us to open confidential police files, Jeffrey,
45:25to a member of the public.
45:27But I'm not a member of the public.
45:29It's my wife they've mutilated.
45:32Yeah.
45:33Yeah.
45:35But too much like taking the law into your own hands.
45:38Well, what's wrong with that? You have the information, I have the key to unlock it.
45:41We don't know that.
45:43Well, it's a gamble, but I'm prepared to gamble.
45:47Agree.
45:49And I'll tell the kidnappers that I can't deliver
45:52until after my High Court application succeeds.
45:55Now, that gives us maybe a week.
45:58If we haven't found them in that time,
46:00then I'll fix a drop at which you can lay a trap.
46:05Jeffrey.
46:12Can we...
46:14Discuss it? Yes, of course you can.
46:24You're deserting her.
46:26On the contrary.
46:27If the police trap them, Francis will be shot.
46:30They'll find them. Or rather, I'll find them.
46:33And then what happens?
46:35Those clods, bog idiots.
46:38If the kidnappers don't kill them, the police will.
46:41Look what's just happened.
46:43See, there are techniques, there are siege techniques.
46:47I've been reading and thinking what I should have been doing at the beginning.
46:51When you cared about Francis.
46:54What on earth are you talking about?
46:55I'll pay.
46:57I'll pay the world.
46:59Now look at you.
47:01Full of yourself.
47:03As if finding her is a business problem.
47:08You're a grand man.
47:11Don't let the businessman in you take over.
47:15Get the money back.
47:18Pay.
47:20Please.
47:22Mr. Carr.
47:23Mr. Carr.
47:26We'll refer it upstairs.
47:29Please.
47:39A court fight for a million pounds.
47:42Radio 2 News with Brian Byrne.
47:47Speculation that the shooting of Andrew Padgett
47:50is connected with the kidnap of Francis Carr
47:52increased today when her husband began a court fight
47:55to regain possession of the million pounds
47:57which he claims is his money.
48:03Just release Clare.
48:05Give them what they want for Clare.
48:07She's been so ill, she nearly died.
48:11I see Clare's a healthy girl apart from asthma.
48:14Now she had nothing with her for it.
48:16No tablets, no inhaler.
48:18Francis said Clare nearly died.
48:19You don't die of asthma.
48:21You do.
48:23She must have got medication from somewhere.
48:25Semper Fidelis.
48:27All over your break-in.
48:29Yes.
48:31Now you must have a break-in and entering on your police computer.
48:33Oh, I've missed a testicle.
48:35What they took wouldn't have been recorded.
48:37There can't have been that many chemist break-ins
48:39the week before that tape was made.
48:41Exactly.
48:43And the other area where the computer can help
48:45is holiday homes, cottages.
48:46Come with me.
48:55Excuse me.
49:01Now, I assume...
49:16Hello.
49:39Hello.
49:41Could you book me on a flight to New York today?
49:43Sure.
50:16Oh!
50:46Oh!
51:17Oh!
51:19Oh!
51:21Oh!
51:23Oh!
51:25Oh!
51:27Oh!
51:29Oh!
