00:00Ever since Samsung announced the S10 devices, I've had my eye on the S10e more than the
00:10other two devices, partially because it's a slightly cheaper device, it's $150 less
00:15than the S10, but I also think that for a lot of people it's actually the better device
00:19of the two.
00:21And having used these two devices, the S10 and the S10e for the past week, and just deliberating
00:26between the two, I'm pretty confident that for me, and I think for a lot of people, the
00:30S10e is more appealing.
00:32And so aside from price, there's two reasons why I like it more than the S10.
00:36The first is actually the fingerprint sensor.
00:38So this is a fingerprint sensor that is mounted on the side, it's a capacitive sensor, it's
00:42kind of like the old school technology.
00:45Usually I find that side-mounted fingerprint sensors aren't great, like I've seen them
00:48on the Razer Phone and other devices as well.
00:51There's some, like, for whatever reason, companies usually do fingerprint sensors on
00:55the side, flush to the bezel, like there's no real tactile feedback as to where it is.
01:00On the S10e, it's like a very obvious spot as to where the fingerprint sensor is, like
01:05you can feel it blindfolded, and it's a great sensor.
01:08It's a high-quality capacitive sensor, and it just works very reliably.
01:11Now it also has this feature where you can roll down on the fingerprint sensor, and it
01:15works in a manner to just pull down the top menu.
01:18It does take some time to get used to, like when I first set it up, I was accidentally
01:22pulling down the top very frequently, like I would just turn on the phone and would pull
01:25down the top menu by accident.
01:27But once you get used to the sensitivity, I found it quite useful.
01:30The other characteristic that I prefer about the S10e over the regular S10 is the ergonomics
01:35of the device.
01:36So, the S10, the regular S10, has the kind of curved edges, and we've seen this kind
01:42of aesthetic on the past few generations of Samsung Galaxy phones, and it's a very nice-looking
01:48design, right?
01:49In the Samsung ads and renders, when they spin this device around in the videos, and
01:52you can see the light kind of reflecting off the surface, it was sexy.
01:56Like it was 2015, they were one of the first companies to bend displays like that.
02:00It was really cool-looking, but in 2019, four years later, this curved edge doesn't really
02:06give any kind of advantage to the screen.
02:08If anything, it actually makes the image look a little bit distorted when you're watching
02:11videos.
02:12I feel like, for most people, a flat display, although it doesn't look as cool in videos
02:16and renders and stuff like that, it's just a better device to hold.
02:19And if you're someone who likes to go caseless on a phone, it's smaller, it's got a more
02:23ergonomic design, throw a skin on it, you're good to go.
02:26The display is really nice.
02:28It's a 1080p panel, super bright, relatively thin bezels, even though there's a little
02:31bit of a chin, and then you have your circular hole punch.
02:33Now, I personally prefer this circular hole instead of that pill-shaped hole on the S10+,
02:38which is one of the reasons why I prefer these smaller phones.
02:40Now, if you compare the displays of the S10 to the S10e side-by-side, there is no doubt
02:45in my mind that the S10 has a better-looking display.
02:47It's higher resolution, and anyone who says that they're identical is a filthy liar.
02:52The S10 does have a better display, but the S10e display is awesome.
02:56It is a pentile display, so at 1080p resolution, it's not, like, as sharp as you might think
03:01based on the numbers, but I really like this screen.
03:04One UI is pretty clean.
03:05I still have my reservations about how quickly and how frequently Samsung's gonna update
03:09the software on these phones, but I think that's something time will tell.
03:13The speakers are pretty clean, and the cameras are great.
03:16The wide angle on the secondary lens is something that I felt like Samsung has always missed
03:19out on, like LG did it on their phones.
03:21I loved it.
03:22I'm glad that they chose a wide angle on the secondary camera instead of a zoom, but just
03:27great images from this camera.
03:29It seems to have a very normal battery life, even though it has a relatively small battery,
03:33I think 31 mAh.
03:34It's a lot smaller than the S10 battery, but because of the lower resolution screen and
03:39probably the lack of other features, they're just very similar in battery lives between
03:43the two phones.
03:44The reverse wireless charging is something that's kind of cool on this phone, but it's
03:47a feature that I probably won't use very often.
03:49I just don't have enough wireless accessories to make use of it, but if you do, it's there.
03:54There are a few things I don't love, Bixby's still here, and the way they've implemented
03:58the whole Bixby button customization doesn't allow you to fully remove it, like you can
04:02set it to a double tap instead of the single tap, which is better than nothing, but I just
04:06like to see it completely gone.
04:07I feel like hardware buttons for assistance shouldn't be a thing.
04:11Other things I don't love about it, I wish the power button was a little bit lower than
04:15it is, like this is relatively high up on the frame.
04:17This is something that affects all the S10 devices, but that's a minor complaint.
04:21Oh, if you're interested or curious, if you're left-handed and you want to use the fingerprint
04:26sensor, I've tested it, so if you're left-handed, you're probably turning on this phone with
04:30kind of like the side of your finger, either your index or middle finger, and it just works
04:34perfectly fine.
04:35You just have to map that part of your finger to the fingerprint sensor, and it works.
04:40Now, for the people that are deciding between the Galaxy S10e and Apple's XR, I gotta be
04:45fair here.
04:46If you're just looking at hardware, there's basically no comparison.
04:49The Samsung S10e is just a way better phone in terms of hardware than Apple's iPhone XR.
04:55However, if you are deeply into that Apple ecosystem, like you have a whole bunch of
04:59Apple devices, like MacBooks, and you're running HomeKit and stuff like that in your house,
05:03the Galaxy S10e is gonna feel out of place in your ecosystem.
05:07There's no way to spin it.
05:08This is still a Samsung device.
05:09It is still an Android device, and as good as the hardware is, I can see why people would
05:14opt for the XR.
05:16Like, as much of a joke of a phone as this is to some people, there still is that software
05:21debate, but if you're not locked into that ecosystem or if you're trying to bust out
05:24of it, the Galaxy S10e should be the choice between the two.
05:28So overall, S10e, such a good phone.
05:30It's small, great hardware, great camera, headphone jack.
05:33There's like so much I like about this phone, and I think for a lot of people, this should
05:37be the pick between the S10s this year.
05:40Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:41Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
05:43See you guys next time.
