00:00Okay, so AMD just launched some new laptop CPUs, the Ryzen 4000 series, and they are very impressive.
00:10Like, legitimately, very powerful CPUs for laptops.
00:15There are, however, a strange number of articles that are like,
00:18this is the end of Intel, Intel's dead, like, it's so not the case.
00:22So I reached out to both my contacts at Intel and AMD just to hear both sides of the story,
00:28and to see what both companies think of each other in terms of the industry,
00:32and where the laptop industry sits right now.
00:35And I thought I would make a video for people that are interested in buying a laptop in 2020,
00:40because it's not as clear-cut as it may seem.
00:42It's not like, dump Intel, everyone should be buying AMD laptops.
00:46That's really not the case.
00:47Okay, but first of all, these new AMD chips are the real deal.
00:52For certain users, for people that can actually take advantage of multicore processing,
00:56these chips are great.
00:57So for some workflows, it really makes so much more sense to purchase one of these new AMD laptops
01:02than what Intel has to offer right now.
01:04Now, in the past, regardless of how much, like, marketing AMD threw into their laptop stuff,
01:10they were never good.
01:11And you can tell from the manufacturer's side.
01:13Like, they never put AMD chips, in the past, into their premium laptops.
01:18Like, they just never did it.
01:19Anytime they used an AMD chip in one of their laptops,
01:22it was usually some kind of, like, plastic, more value-oriented device.
01:25But this all changed a few days ago,
01:27because now we're seeing some very premium devices being made with these Ryzen CPUs.
01:32Now, the reason for this, the reason why this chip is so special and so good,
01:36is because it's the world's first 7-nanometer processor.
01:40And the key here is power efficiency.
01:42They are able to push out a crazy amount of performance per watt.
01:46And it's giving these new chips some very serious legs.
01:48And it's also provided some competition, finally, in the laptop CPU space.
01:53Now, there are a couple things you need to be aware of.
01:55First, these chips are really good for two...
02:01No, I'd say one thing, really.
02:02Content creation.
02:03That's seriously the best, by far the best feature about these new AMD chips.
02:09It doesn't really matter which application you're using,
02:11because 8 cores is almost always going to be better than 4 cores or 6 cores,
02:15when it comes to content creation.
02:17Now, the other thing they drew attention to was gaming.
02:20But we're talking about gaming with the integrated graphics on these new Ryzen chips.
02:24And we're seeing decent performance,
02:26like way better than what Intel offers in their current integrated graphics solutions.
02:30But keep in mind that these are still integrated graphics.
02:33These are not representative of actual gaming laptops.
02:36So the real strength of these new AMD chips
02:39really just lies in their ability to process in multi-core applications,
02:44like actual workflows.
02:46Now, another thing I was interested in was battery life.
02:49So I played with the engineering samples I've had,
02:51just to kind of see what they could do.
02:53And I've spoken to some of the guys from AMD,
02:55just to learn more about this.
02:57So this is my gut feeling on it.
02:59The 7nm chips from AMD are so much better than what they've had in the past.
03:04Because in the past, AMD's laptop chips were really poor with idle state battery consumption.
03:09They are much improved, but Intel stuff is still better.
03:13And the biggest thing comes from just years of optimization.
03:16Intel has spent so much time working with this architecture
03:19and working with laptop manufacturers to be really good at battery consumption.
03:24And the companies out there that are making laptops
03:26that are designed to last as long as possible
03:28are going to stick with Intel chips.
03:30But the thing is, the trade-off for most people seems to be worth it.
03:34Like, you just get so much better performance with 8 cores in a laptop than 4.
03:39For Apple users, if you're someone who's always been interested in an AMD-based MacBook Pro,
03:45it's not going to happen anytime soon.
03:47Apple's software is just way too finely tuned for Intel's hardware that it's...
03:52Yeah, it sounds really cool on paper, but no.
03:56Okay, I'm going to wrap this up with two kind of bigger picture thoughts here.
04:01The first thing is pricing.
04:03AMD in the past has always been cheaper when it comes to their laptop offerings.
04:08But because they know they have something good here,
04:11the pricing from what I've seen of all the devices that have had MSRPs pop up,
04:15it's not cheap.
04:16Not that it's expensive, but because they know they have something that's comparable,
04:20if not better than what Intel has,
04:22they are pricing it at kind of like what you'd expect for a high-performance premium device.
04:28And the second thing is Intel's response to all of this has been Tiger Lake.
04:33And Tiger Lake has one clear advantage to me.
04:36It's the GPU performance.
04:37Like, we've been told that the Tiger Lake CPUs are supposed to have a significantly better GPU
04:43than what even the Ryzen 4000 chips have.
04:45So, I'm looking forward to it.
04:47Here's my take on this whole, like, laptop industry right now.
04:50In the year 2020, we finally have, like, two real competitors.
04:54Companies making compelling devices or compelling components for laptops,
04:59I think it's cool.
05:00If you've been holding off on a laptop upgrade,
05:03I think this is the year to do it.
05:04There's just a lot of cool stuff on the table.
05:06If you're a content creator, the 8-Core stuff from AMD just makes a lot of sense.
05:10If you're a gamer or if you're looking for a more productivity-focused device,
05:13or if you're like a student that just wants a really long battery life in their laptop,
05:17I don't know if AMD's the answer yet.
05:19Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:20Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
05:22See you guys next time.
