00:00All right, let's talk about one of Samsung's new A-series phones.
00:04This one in particular, I think will be their bestseller.
00:07This is the A52 5G and I think it just boils down to the best value.
00:12This has a strangely attractive price point for the feature set that you get with it.
00:17And yeah, let's dig in.
00:18So this lineup, like the A-series phones, normally they cut corners just to make it
00:24fit into the whole category of Samsung Galaxy smartphones properly.
00:29But this year, it just, it's weirdly well equipped and well featured.
00:33Okay, so this thing starts at $400 or $500 US.
00:36It's got 120Hz display, IP certified water resistance, it's got a headphone jack, dual
00:41speakers, micro SD card slot, a very solid camera system, and four years of security
00:47updates promised from Samsung.
00:49And because it's a Samsung Galaxy A-series phone, this is going to see some really aggressive
00:54carrier discounts in terms of its pricing.
00:56So there's a lot going on.
00:58It's great on this phone.
01:00So the design of it is pretty simple, right?
01:03This is a black colored phone, obviously comes in various colors, but they all look
01:07pretty plain.
01:08And this is a plastic phone, plastic backed, plastic frame, but they own the plastic material,
01:13right?
01:14They don't try to pretend like it's glastic or they don't try to pretend like it's metal.
01:17It's just plain plastic, but it feels durable.
01:20I will say though, if you're looking for imperfections in the build, some of the seams are a little
01:24rough where some of the plastic components meet up, but otherwise great looking phone,
01:30great built phone, and I'm assuming solid durability.
01:32It just feels tanky all around.
01:35Now the display up front, I like a lot.
01:38So this is a flat edge display, unlike a lot of the premium Samsung phones that have curved
01:42edges.
01:43It's six and a half inches, 1080p, Super AMOLED display, and 120 Hertz.
01:47So very fast and fluid if you're scrolling through stuff.
01:51It's also 800 nits.
01:53And I think for a lot of people looking at that number, at that brightness measurement,
01:57it doesn't seem particularly bright, right?
01:58Because there are displays out there that are like 1200, even 1500 nits and beyond,
02:02but it doesn't scale linearly.
02:05It's a logarithmic thing, right?
02:06So when you go from, let's say 500 nits to a thousand nits, it's not actually double
02:11the perceived brightness.
02:12It's double the nit count, but you have to go probably like 4X to be able to get double
02:17the brightness.
02:18All sweaty stuff, but the point I'm trying to make is that an 800 nits screen, even though
02:22it doesn't seem super bright on paper, is very bright.
02:26Like 800 nits is more than enough for most people.
02:29This isn't even at full brightness.
02:30This is like, I don't know, three quarters?
02:35That's full brightness.
02:37It's a bright screen.
02:38The bezels are reasonably thin.
02:40The top one's a little bit thicker and the bottom bezel even more so, but overall I think
02:44the bezels look clean.
02:45There is that silver ring on the front facing camera that Samsung loves to do on their
02:50more inexpensive phones.
02:51I think they do it on purpose, right?
02:52So that that front facing camera is more obvious and more visually distracting in
02:57their less expensive phones, but I don't care enough for this price point.
03:01Now the display is supposedly 120 Hertz that is dynamically refreshed.
03:04So instead of just maintaining a high refresh rate all the time, when it's capable of it
03:09and it's able to lower the clock speed, it'll down clock it to preserve battery life.
03:13It's not mentioned though in the software and stuff looks good on the screen.
03:17If you're playing games, watching movies or just browsing the web, it's bright, colorful.
03:21I can't complain with this screen.
03:23Now there are stereo speakers, but the left one or like the top one, left one, if you're
03:28holding it in landscape orientation, it's noticeably less quiet than the bottom firing
03:34speaker.
03:35There's also a SIM card tray at the top with a micro SD, which is a huge win, but the
03:39biggest win of all, headphone jack.
03:43That's the good stuff, right?
03:45Because it's a Samsung phone, you get one UI and you have a bunch of Samsung apps pre-installed.
03:50Some of those are useful.
03:51Most of it, I find superfluous and I just remove as much as I can.
03:54The face unlock is fast.
03:56The fingerprint sensor isn't as fast, but it is available for the people that prefer it.
04:00But the overall performance on the device is really good.
04:03It's running a Snapdragon 750G and you would expect it to be quick and it is, but the thing
04:08that surprised me was gaming performance.
04:11Even stuff like Genshin Impact is very playable on this device.
04:15I will say though that there are some slowdowns, not just in games, but occasionally you'll
04:19see some stuttering in the UI and I don't know if it's because I'm looking for it and
04:22I'm trying to compare it to like a Snapdragon 888 and I'm trying to see the differences.
04:27I think though that most people that are purchasing this and spending real money on it and using
04:31it as a regular phone, not only will you not be bothered by the occasional stutter, but
04:35I don't think you'll even notice it.
04:37Now in terms of battery life, this has a 4500mAh battery.
04:40It's not particularly big or small.
04:42It's kind of to be expected for a Samsung phone of this size and I'm getting a screen
04:46on time of seven and a half hours and this is at 120Hz, dynamically refreshed, but this
04:51is with the smooth screen option.
04:54There is also a 15W charger in the box, but there is no support for wireless charging,
04:59unfortunately.
05:00Okay, let's talk about the camera system because this is an important part of this device.
05:05So this camera system has a main camera with optical image stabilization and there's also
05:10an ultra-wide, but there is no optical zoom.
05:13It's a purely digital zoom if you want to do it, but we'll get into that in a second.
05:17It's actually better than you'd expect and there's also a 5MP macro.
05:22Now the presence of this OIS on the main camera is awesome.
05:25It helps a ton, especially for tough shots like low-light photos and shots where your
05:29hands weren't perfectly steady.
05:31Look at the dark area inside the hut.
05:34The A52 5G is doing some pretty aggressive processing.
05:37It's a tough shot though, right?
05:38It's bright outside and quite dark inside the hut, but the camera is still able to do
05:42a good job.
05:44The ultra-wide isn't as good at it though.
05:46It still tries, but the details tend to get super grainy in the process.
05:50And I'd say in general, the ultra-wide lens struggles with the tougher shots.
05:55Now in good lighting, the images look clean, proper coloring, nothing too saturated.
05:59If anything, I feel like some of the warmer tones could be a little more amped up, which
06:03is kind of surprising coming from a Samsung phone.
06:06But overall, I think the camera system is really good, but the zoom is what surprised
06:09me the most, I'd say.
06:11So this does not have any kind of optical zoom capabilities, but it's all digital.
06:15But even at 10x, the images look reasonably clean.
06:18So I think they did a great job on the camera system.
06:20And I think for people that are concerned that at this price point, Samsung skimped
06:25on the camera, because that's a very reasonable suspicion.
06:29I don't think they did.
06:30I think that this year they have packed a very well-rounded camera system on the A52 5G.
06:36Now, my favorite thing about this phone has nothing to do with any of the hardware.
06:40It really is that four-year security update guarantee from the company.
06:46And that's not common.
06:47Like, if you look at Chinese-branded phones that can deliver hardware like this for even
06:51less money, they don't give you three years of feature support and four years of security
06:56support.
06:57This is special.
06:58And I appreciate it, but obviously not everyone cares about it.
07:02But I think for a phone that you're trying to hold on to for four or five years sometimes,
07:07that software support is very valuable over time, right?
07:12Okay, great phone.
07:14The one biggest weakness I would say it has, and this is, I would say, a minor thing,
07:18but in case you care, the haptics on it are very weak.
07:22The motor feels insignificant, and it seems to stem from the top or middle of the phone.
07:27It's not a great haptic feedback, but otherwise, fantastic phone if you ask me.
07:34Okay.
07:35Hope you guys enjoyed this video.
07:36Thumbs if you liked it.
07:37See you guys next time.
