00:00My name is Fred Armisen, and I'm a comedian.
00:02Are you a big podcast fan?
00:04Uh, no.
00:05F***ing podcasting, what a s*** name that is.
00:09This story will change the way you think about podcasts.
00:13Morning everybody, it's Adam Curry here with you and...
00:15Adam Curry from MTV?
00:17The technology of podcasting was invented in 2000.
00:20It's really simple syndication.
00:22Before anyone was podcasting, before there was an iPod.
00:25I got a call from Apple.
00:26Here's another one, Adam Curry is one of the guys that invented podcasting.
00:30Steve wants to meet with you and he says,
00:31I want to put podcasting into iTunes, is that okay?
00:34I'm like, yeah.
00:36Long before, you know, television, film, radio, the printed word,
00:42we've been communicating with each other in sound.
00:45When you make a radio documentary or you make a podcast,
00:48I feel like we're playing with fire.
00:50It's elemental to who we are.
00:52I'm a podcast host, and this is a film about audio storytelling.
00:57I know that the world is waiting to find out how cool this is.
01:0138% of the U.S. population, 12 plus, listened to a podcast in the last month.
01:05That ain't nothing, right? That's bigger than Twitter.
01:08But there have been some growing pains.
01:11The podcast is moving to Spotify.
01:13When a company with money is interested in you,
01:15they're not interested in you.
01:17And they're not even interested in what you create.
01:19They're interested in your audience.
01:21And you can sell that audience exactly once.
01:24That's when things got complicated.
01:26Businesses finally found what's going on with our little secret world.
01:30I hope that while the money floods the space,
01:32that the integrity of the medium is able to stay.
01:36It's really hard to keep humanity at the center of it, I think, when you scale.
01:42I feel like we've been in a bit of a wild podcast bubble.
01:45I think the bubble is popping, yeah?
01:47Companies that fund shows are de-risking.
01:52I think podcasting is the medium.
01:55It's sitting around a fire telling stories.
01:58It's what we've always done.
01:59And the thing that was magical to me is that with a voice and nothing else,
02:04you can create anything.
