Flags, insignia and symbols in Derry ‘driving really poor relations’

00:00Beyond the direct influence of paramilitaries in communities, it's also hard to ignore

00:05that driving through some areas of Derry and lots of other areas across the north, you

00:10can also see their insignias and their symbols dotted around the landscape and on our lampposts.

00:16And I would agree with Paula Bradshaw that these symbols and flags create an intimidating

00:21and menacing culture of fear in communities across Northern Ireland.

00:25They drive really poor relations and create an environment which nobody in Northern Ireland

00:31wants to live in, nor should they.

00:34That's a failure of this place to get serious about regulating the flying of flags and today

00:39should be another opportunity to reiterate our calls for that to take place without delay

00:46through binding legislation.
