Protégé of the Black Rose, also known as Black Rose Academy , is a 2004 Hong Kong action comedy film co-directed by Wong Chun-chun (黃真真) and Donnie Yen Chi-tan (甄子丹). It follows Jeffrey Lau Chun-Wai (劉鎮偉)'s 1997 film Black Rose II as the last in a series of updated Black Rose films but features a different plot and no returning cast members. All of these films are ultimately inspired by Chor Yuen's 1965 film Black Rose and its sequels.
Gill (鍾欣潼 Gillian Chung Ka-lai) and Sandy (蔡卓妍 Charlene Choi Cheuk-yin) are two young girls looking for an apartment. They find a mysterious house whose owner is none other than the legendary heroine Black Rose. Black Rose (毛舜筠 Teresa Mo Shun-kwan) decides to train the girls much to their chagrin. When the girls try to escape, they learn that Poison Ivy (Anika Jennie Ji), a former protégé of Black Rose's, has been causing trouble. With no other option, the girls, along with taxi driver Jim Lo (who Black Rose thinks is her ex-lover), train and Gill and Sandy become the new Black Roses.
