00:00RVing is a way of life that's bigger than ever.
00:11More and more Americans are hitting the open road.
00:13Forty-six million Americans are expected to climb aboard.
00:18Recreational vehicle sales are higher than normal.
00:21Nearly half of new sales are to first-time campers.
00:25RVs like these are more popular than ever, but they're also big and slow, which leaves
00:31the world wondering, when will someone build a motorcycle motorhome?
00:55This is a 1989 Honda GL 1500 Goldwing.
01:17And this is a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R 1000.
01:22And these are our motorcycle motorhomes.
01:26Zach and I are tired of bikes being left out of the hashtag van life, hashtag RV living
01:31conversation.
01:32So we're setting about fixing that with these two incredible contraptions.
01:36Why choose between being able to do sick wheelies and being comfortable while you sleep when
01:41you could have both?
01:42Exhibit A, Dave the Gixxer, already established here on CTXP as one of the highest performing
01:48showroom superbikes of all time, now outfitted with a stunt cage tow hitch and behind, a
01:54tent trailer, which folds out into 75 square feet, queen size bed, standing room, and full
01:59bathroom facilities, provided you don't need to wash your hands, but who does that anyway,
02:02right?
02:03Oh man, speak to yourself.
02:04Also, how is this a motorcycle motorhome?
02:06You've got a motorcycle pulling a home, which I guess kind of works.
02:10It's a motor and a home, right?
02:12Well, the true way to do it, the correct way to do it, is over here.
02:15Let me introduce you to the wing-a-bago.
02:18Perched atop this 34-year-old icon of luxury touring is a tiny home made out of wood.
02:23It's got windows.
02:24It is wired into the motorcycle's electrical system, so you've got USB power and interior
02:28and exterior lights and a skylight.
02:30It is only nine square feet, on account of it being a tiny home, but it has a pop-out
02:35that doubles it to 18 for sleeping.
02:37So we're looking at a perfectly engineered, well-balanced, all-in-one motorcycle motorhome
02:43ready for a cross-country trip.
02:45I mean, you're making memories of the whole family with this thing.
02:49The whole family?
02:50Are you doing an apostrophe?
02:51Well, you're like texting pictures from the road, I guess, I don't know.
02:54Or you like don't have a family, maybe.
02:57Anywho, whether it's Dave the trailer towing queen or 1,100 pounds of aubergine Amish here,
03:02the goal with this trip is to go from here in Los Angeles to the grandest of canyons
03:07in Arizona.
03:08And with the scenic route we have planned out, that means 600 miles of all-American
03:13touring and camping to prove that these motorcycles should not be on the back of RVs, Ari.
03:19They should...
03:20Be the RV correctamundo.
03:22I mean, come on, like, look at these things.
03:25They're cool to look at.
03:26Yeah, they look better than they're probably going to be to ride.
03:27Take your bets right now.
03:28Do you guys think it's going to work?
03:29Is it going to work?
03:30Do you think it's going to work?
03:31I really don't want to fall over on this thing.
03:33We don't know if it's going to work.
03:39As usual, safety was our top priority.
03:43We did a final systems check on our rigs, found absolutely no issues whatsoever, and
03:49were finally ready to hit the road.
03:52Let's go.
03:53No.
03:54Keep rocking.
03:55Keep rocking.
03:56Go.
03:57You got it.
03:58You got it.
03:59I'm going to break something.
04:00Go.
04:01Go.
04:02Go.
04:03I got it.
04:12It's so heavy, dude.
04:14There's so much weight up high.
04:15I had to remove the handy passenger handles.
04:19You ready for this adventure to commence?
04:22Oh, I stalled it.
04:24You just stalled, Dave.
04:27I forgot that Dave is GP shift.
04:29I got to go up for one.
04:30It's pure sport bike, man.
04:32That's right.
04:33Let's go.
04:34All right.
04:35We are leaving Carson, California, where our shop and office is.
04:50Oh, my God.
04:51Oh, my God.
04:52Those bumps are terrifying.
04:53I think the front wheel just came off the ground.
04:54We're heading east.
04:57Grand Canyon is our final destination.
05:00Wherever we end up, there we shall sleep.
05:02Okay.
05:03Here we go.
05:05Cross this minefield of bad pavement.
05:07Look out.
05:08Your trailer's got some bounce to it.
05:13Yeah.
05:14I also see what I believe is toilet paper flailing around like a ribbon behind your
05:19rig.
05:20Oh, no.
05:21Really?
05:22Is my toilet paper coming undid?
05:23Oh, yeah.
05:24Big bump.
05:25Big bump.
05:27I'm pulling over.
05:28I got to fix my toilet paper situation.
05:29I don't want it to go out onto Mother Earth.
05:30Put it in the toilet for now, maybe?
05:31Yeah.
05:32The toilet has a nice little storage area underneath it.
05:33Luckily.
05:34I thought of everything.
05:35So far, anyway.
05:36Now, to merge onto a Los Angeles freeway.
05:37Baptism by fire.
05:38Oh, my God.
05:39Oh, my God.
05:40Oh, my God.
05:41Oh, my God.
05:42Oh, my God.
05:43Oh, my God.
05:44Oh, my God.
05:45Oh, my God.
05:46Oh, my God.
05:47Oh, my God.
05:48Oh, my God.
05:49Oh, my God.
05:50Oh, my God.
05:51Oh, my God.
05:52Oh, my God.
05:53Oh, my God.
05:54Oh, my God.
05:55Baptism by fire, dude.
05:56This is where the average pace for those who haven't traveled in southern California when
06:03it's open freeway is about 80 miles an hour, which is well beyond the speed that I think
06:09is really safe when you've got a barn on the back your Goldwing.
06:13Well, actually, there's a lot of suspense involved for me because I actually know how
06:17fast we're going since Dave's speedometer doesn't work.
06:20Currently going 45.
06:21Wow.
06:22This is scary.
06:23Yes, this is plenty fast.
06:25Oh, my God.
06:26Crosswind.
06:29Traffic. Holy.
06:31I'm sorry about the swearing, but I'm actually fearful for my life right now.
06:35Oh, this is very bouncy and scary.
06:38The wind is vicious on this giant sail
06:44of a billboard I've got in the back here.
06:48You know, your bike doesn't look that ridiculous from up here.
06:51Well, I'm glad to hear that.
06:52I'm putting my chin bar down so that people can see less of my face
06:56because I'm embarrassed.
06:58I think you should be quite proud of what you've created, man.
07:01You may just change the world of motorcycle touring forever.
07:09The foundation of my motorcycle motor home
07:12was a 35 year old Goldwing with 114,000 miles.
07:16And by all accounts, it was in pretty good shape.
07:20That is, until I ruined it by adding a 250 pound house on the back,
07:24which brought the curb weight to more than 1100 pounds.
07:29My GSX-R, on the other hand, was the exact bike
07:33that once famously beat a Ducati Panigale V4 around a racetrack.
07:39I had added USB charging ports, an integrated heated gear controller
07:44and bar risers for added comfort.
07:49It was essentially perfect.
07:55I've got fluid puking out of somewhere.
07:58Fluid? Yeah, what's that coming from?
08:12Oh, it fell off.
08:14Oh, no.
08:17What do you got?
08:18Well, the three inch bar risers that I affixed to Dave
08:23in the hopes of
08:25relieving some pressure on my wrists during this road trip
08:29put the brake reservoir right up near the fairing.
08:31And when it pushed on the fairing, it popped the hose
08:35off the little nipple on the bottom of the reservoir.
08:38Oh, no. So it's literally just been pouring out of there. Yeah.
08:42And I don't think there's air in the line yet, but there's going to be
08:45if I don't fix this pretty soon.
08:48A reservoir hose coming loose isn't the end of the world.
08:51But considering we were only 20 miles into our trip, it wasn't a great start.
08:57We're working out all the kinks.
08:58Like we said, we haven't ridden these vehicles before today, so
09:02there's bound to be some bugs.
09:06Haven't found mine yet.
09:19Back on the road, it seemed like all was well with Project Moto Home.
09:24My bike was no longer leaking fluid, and Ari seemed to be getting
09:27more comfortable at the helm of his plywood pleasure cruiser.
09:33There were the occasional teething problems,
09:36but for the most part, the sailing was smooth.
09:40As long as we didn't get stuck in any nasty crosswinds,
09:44everything would be fine.
09:48Oh, my God.
09:55Oh, my God. It's so freaking terrifying.
09:59I don't think I've ever ridden in a crosswind like this,
10:02and certainly not on such a massive motorcycle.
10:05Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, my goodness.
10:10Oh, this is this is sketch, man.
10:12This better die down.
10:14It's quite a scene back here watching it dance around.
10:17You're doing great.
10:18We got a lot of cars back, but you're OK.
10:21Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
10:25Yeah, I've never seen a motorcycle like that before.
10:30Yeah, I'm doing everything I can to just freaking keep it on course.
10:35I wonder, are you still going to be laughing
10:36when you see me get blown off into the desert?
10:38No, I'm not. I don't want you to get hurt or anything, but it is
10:42an incredible scene.
10:44Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
10:48After fighting our way through the wind for the better part of an hour,
10:54we finally rolled into town.
11:00This area around Joshua Tree National Park
11:03has some of the finest camping in the world.
11:06But Ari and I agreed that there was only one place that made sense
11:10for a couple of ragged motorhome vagabonds such as ourselves.
11:15Look at all these spots, buddy.
11:16We're going to be just fine.
11:25First night out on the road, and we are going to deploy
11:27our motorcycle motorhomes for the very first time in a parking lot
11:32because this is what RVers do.
11:35And we are RVers now.
11:36So we have set up in the vast ambient light
11:39and many empty parking spaces of a Walmart.
11:42And I guess we'll just hope not to get shooed away
11:44in the middle of the night, right?
11:45Yeah. And, you know, if it's 24 hours, then there's a bathroom right there.
11:48And, you know, if we need bulk cookies or cereal bars or beef jerky,
11:53we know where to go, which knowing us, we will.
12:01So this just pops right off of here,
12:04and then this guy
12:07folds off.
12:07This is my floor of my standing room.
12:13This thing folding out, man, it's a lot of space.
12:15Heck yeah.
12:16Nothing but the best for Dave the Jigster.
12:19Yeah, you're going to have plenty of space.
12:22Yeah. Would you like to
12:25step into this musty old sack of canvas?
12:29Yeah, I think I can smell it from here.
12:31Yeah.
12:32It definitely reminds me of my Boy Scout days, the old old canvas material.
12:36Oh, very nice.
12:38So you got this full size bed here, as you can see.
12:40And then what's really nifty is I can access the storage
12:44underneath my trailer whilst I'm inside my cabin.
12:47So I've got my clothes, I've got a cooler.
12:49This is my sleeping bag and pillow, which I need to take out, actually.
12:53Hey, Zach, can you help me lift this half ton machine under the center stand?
12:59It's the first step.
13:00Oh, chink in the armor of the of the wing of Bego needing,
13:04you know, a friend to help you get on the center stand.
13:07But, you know, that's what friends are for.
13:09OK, we got to level the wing of Bego just like a proper RV.
13:22Rise. Little on the left.
13:28This is a little jacked up.
13:31Oh, yeah, look, it's all bent.
13:32Oh, no. Yeah, I heard it dragging when we got on the
13:37605.
13:40Yeah, that looks real stable, doesn't it?
13:45Yikes.
13:47This is the magic of the wing of Bego, folks.
13:50Nice and compact while you're riding around.
13:53And then you pull these levers and there we go.
13:57There we go.
14:00Oh, what? Oh, baby.
14:05Now, when I sleep, I like to have my arms above my head,
14:07so I made sure I had a full 80 inches in there from stem to stern.
14:12The barn door opens to the right, you see.
14:17I already have my phone in there charging.
14:19We got power, nice wood interior.
14:24It is insulated.
14:25I've got my little granny's attic, the shelf up there so I can keep my bottle of water.
14:30What's the fun? What's the fun about?
14:31Oh, that that's.
14:34Yeah, that's my bathroom.
14:37It's a it's a pro funnel.
14:39It's got a valve on the bottom and a lid.
14:40And I figure I can feed the funnel out the hole.
14:44I like the hole in the floor.
14:45Yeah, it was kind of a desperate thing that I did last minute.
14:49Fine construction, my friend.
14:50Thanks. Yeah. And I'm like, it feels like it's pretty sturdy.
14:53It's not like ultra sturdy.
14:55There's really only one way to find out.
15:02Hopefully, see you in the morning, dude.
15:04Another fine day of riding awaits.
15:06If I hear you screaming, I'll get out as quick as I can and try and help you.
15:10Likewise.
15:12Nighty night.
15:17It smells really bad in here.
15:19It's quite cozy and calm inside this this massive tent.
15:25It's honestly too much.
15:29It's too big to even know what to do with as a motorcyclist, to be honest.
15:37I think I'm looking forward to this night's sleep on this motorcycle camping trip.
15:59Good morning from the warm, cozy confines of the Wing of Bago.
16:03We've got a beautiful morning out there in the high desert of Yucca Valley.
16:08And first night out on the road of success is pretty comfortable.
16:13It was a little breezy, a little cold last night, but I was warm.
16:16It was calm in here.
16:17I got plenty of leg room.
16:21I got my motorcycle helmet,
16:23kept my phone charged in the shelf right up here, kept it powered up
16:27and I was pretty good.
16:28So all things considered, a great night of camping.
16:36While Eri made coffee,
16:38I caught up on the latest MotoGP race in the comfort of my full sized bed.
16:45Soon, the Wing of Bago received the ultimate camper compliment.
16:49Interest from real live Europeans.
16:53Morning.
16:56You need to keep it closed like that.
16:58It's kind of agonizing.
16:59Do you see it?
17:00Yeah, it slides out.
17:01Yeah.
17:02It's good.
17:07Where are you going?
17:08Grand Canyon.
17:10Grand Canyon.
17:11We know there's a Grand Canyon.
17:12See?
17:13Yeah, it's a couple of days east.
17:15Yeah?
17:16Eri's rig is very impressive.
17:17I think this is much less impressive when it's set up,
17:20because it just looks like a pop-up tent with a motorcycle next to it.
17:24It's just another homeless guy who doesn't know what he's doing with his life.
17:27But when they see it hooked up,
17:28and they realize that I have all the performance in the world on tap,
17:32plus a pavilion,
17:35I feel like then they would understand.
17:36I wish I could say that in Italian.
17:37Now they're leaving.
17:38Bye.
17:40Bye-bye.
17:45Okay.
17:46Our campers are packed.
17:49Woo!
17:50We're ready to go.
17:51The sun's shining.
17:53Arizona or bust, yeah?
17:55Yeah, hopefully we get over the state line.
17:56I don't think we're going to make it to the Grand Canyon today,
17:58but it doesn't matter,
17:59because we can sleep wherever we want.
18:02We now know that Walmart parking lots are very safe and welcoming,
18:05and you meet lots of interesting people.
18:11Oh, look at that.
18:13Gotta love a Honda.
18:17Away we go.
18:24Uh-oh.
18:27My bike died.
18:38Does it smell like gas back there?
18:40That's what I'm trying to figure out.
18:42Smells like gas, yeah.
18:47Yeah, I know.
18:48It sounds like there's no spark.
18:54Yeah, I don't know what to do.
18:59We added gas to the tank,
19:01and crossing our fingers that this is why the motorcycle won't start.
19:14I guess we just live at Walmart now.
19:17We have our houses with us.
19:21We have our houses with us.
19:24I think our families will understand.
19:27We weren't sure what was worse,
19:30being stuck in that parking lot forever
19:32or taking apart a 1989 Goldwing.
19:36We did our best to motivate
19:38and see what was going on beneath Vader's helmet.
19:41It's a disassembly by numbers.
19:44Literally.
19:45Disassembly by numbers in the ye olde Goldwing owner's manual.
19:51We have access to some spark plugs.
19:55All right, give it a little crank, see if we see some spark,
19:58or if I get shocked.
19:59It's always exciting.
20:02It's got spark.
20:04Running out of ideas,
20:06we plugged the Wingabago battery into the camera crew's van
20:09and kept looking for reasons that the bike wouldn't fire.
20:13We're trying to track down potential problems
20:15because it seems as though it's not getting fuel
20:17because we saw that it was getting spark.
20:20There's just nobody home and you crank it.
20:38Okay.
20:40All righty.
20:44We tested the fuel pump.
20:46We pulled the hose off of here and checked the output,
20:49but the fuel is supposed to go through the diaphragm here.
20:52This acts as basically an automatic petcock,
20:54and we weren't getting gas when we pulled this hose off.
20:57So we basically bypassed it directly from the fuel filter,
21:00and now the motorcycle starts.
21:03Back in the big, cozy Wingabago saddle,
21:07heading east.
21:14♪♪♪
21:25The Wingabago drama put us on the road later than we expected,
21:29but you're never really behind schedule
21:31when your house has wheels.
21:37Just about to join up with classical Route 66.
21:41I mean, what better road trip RV and route than Route 66?
21:46Well, it depends how windy it is,
21:48but theoretically, what better road?
21:50I agree.
21:55We're turning north,
21:57and the wind is going from approximately tailwind
22:00to fully perpendicular,
22:02so I'm carrying my traditional 10 degrees of lean.
22:06Oh, my gosh.
22:08♪♪♪
22:12Oh, my.
22:16Dave, the trailer-hauling jixer, was unfazed,
22:20but once again, the USS Wingabago was struggling in rough seas.
22:27Conditions were bad,
22:29and when we finally saw shelter, we took it.
22:32♪♪♪
22:37Oh, his jack stand just broke off.
22:40Oh, wow.
22:44Half of it appears to be missing.
22:46I think I know where it is.
22:48That's too bad.
22:49That's the side I really need to, like, support the bike
22:51against the wind, too.
22:54♪♪♪
23:05I guess I feel better now that I'm out of the wind, briefly,
23:10but it doesn't look like it's going to relent,
23:14and we've only gone about 60 miles out of the 200 we want to do,
23:19so, yeah, might feel better after a little regroup,
23:24but right now, it's...
23:28Seems like a really bad idea.
23:31You want to try riding it for a while, camera guy?
23:34Try this little helmet on, just take it for a little cruise?
23:38Hopefully, this is the crescendo of the bad idea, you know?
23:41We'll look back, and we'll think, remember with the crosswind?
23:44Oh, that was bad.
23:49Eventually, the wind died down,
23:51and we felt ready to brave Route 66 yet again.
23:58The wing of Bago leaned into the wind,
24:01and Dave's trailer shimmied down the road.
24:05We weren't going fast, but we've gone slower.
24:12Suiting up for another stint in the wind.
24:19Wow, look at these beautiful mountains.
24:21Really pretty, very dramatic.
24:23We were in Beige Desert today,
24:25now we're in Dusky Mountains.
24:27It's beautiful.
24:29Dude, there's some burros.
24:31There's, like, wild donkeys over there.
24:33Oh, yeah.
24:39We're going to have a little break,
24:41and then we're going to head back to the hotel,
24:43and then we're going to head back to the hotel,
24:45and then we're going to head back to the hotel,
24:47and then we're going to head back to the hotel.
24:51Now, normally, we're excited to get to twisty roads.
24:54We're coming up on some twisty roads,
24:56Ari Henning, how are you feeling?
24:58I'm trying to be as grateful and optimistic as possible,
25:02but I'm not going to lie.
25:04The road being straight is much more to my liking
25:07on the wing of Bago.
25:09It's just so big and cumbersome,
25:11but you should enjoy Dave's performance and athleticism.
25:14That trailer seems like it follows the wheel track pretty well.
25:19There we go. Go, Dave, go.
25:25Zach and Dave the Jixer disappearing into the distance
25:28as I drag my scissor jack through corners.
25:34Go, David, go.
25:36Dave, the trailer queen, versus the twisty road.
25:45This is a super cool area.
25:47I would love to spend some time up here
25:49and explore all these little ruins
25:51and mine shafts and all sorts of stuff.
25:55Listen to that K5 Jixer sing, trailer or not.
26:09It was only a few minutes away from the end of the day,
26:13it was only about seven miles of twists and turns through the pass,
26:17and frankly, that was enough of a challenge
26:20with our motorhome contraptions.
26:24But it was a nice change of pace before the end of the day.
26:29We made it, which seemed questionable on several occasions today.
26:34Those crosswinds were, I know I've said this many times before,
26:37but vicious and terrifying.
26:39But, yeah, we persevered and actually made it to Kingman, Arizona
26:43to this wonderful KOA campsite where we're doing the RV thing.
26:46It turned into a beautiful still life campground,
26:49and we're going to spend the night there,
26:51and we're going to spend the night there,
26:53and we're going to spend the night there,
26:55and we're going to spend the night there,
26:57and we're going to spend the night there,
26:59and we're going to spend the night there.
27:01A little chilly, but no wind, which you got to say is quite nice.
27:04Which we learned in Wyoming is very important.
27:06And today, frankly.
27:08We also experimented with the agility, or lack thereof,
27:13of these machines on that twisty road through lovely Oatman, Arizona.
27:18I will say, slow as we were for motorcycles,
27:22We had a pretty good time, and I don't see any mini-winnies or Jaycos going that fast.
27:26There's no conventional RV taking those hairpins at those speeds.
27:29That was a lot of fun, actually.
27:30It was a beautiful mountain pass, a gorgeous road, and like, you know, exactly what I enjoyed
27:34riding motorcycles, even if they're encumbered with ridiculous loads.
27:37I mean, we did make it to the destination we planned on making it to tonight, which
27:42means tomorrow, a couple hundred-ish miles to get to the very Grand Canyon.
27:48And so far, more or less, so good.
27:51Yeah, if we make it there, it'll be motorcycle motorhome success.
27:56Or we'll freeze to death tonight.
27:58Good night, everybody.
28:01You're probably going to be warmer in your bed tonight than we are.
28:04Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
28:18Morning brought more wind.
28:21But the sun warmed us up, as did packing up our mobile homes.
28:26Some more labor-intensive than others.
28:45Next stop, Grand Canyon, because what else could go wrong on this trip?
28:48Nothing, I assume.
28:50Still, it much feels nice.
29:02For once, nothing did go wrong.
29:05We made good time all morning.
29:07And soon, I had an idea.
29:10Big surprise.
29:21Jixxer Bro wants to flex and drag race against the old guy on the Gold Wing.
29:27This is true.
29:28I do.
29:29But not because I'm trying to shoot fish in a barrel.
29:33We've had a lot of time to talk on this trip so far.
29:36We've been genuinely curious because both of these machines are heavily encumbered.
29:42We're not sure which one's faster.
29:43Well, I think I got something for you, sonny boy.
29:45I got six cylinders, 1,500 cc, 110 foot-pounds of torque.
29:49I see.
29:49Your tune has changed.
29:51Yeah, I mean, you know, we'll see how it goes.
29:53But what do you think?
29:54Like the taxiway, like the yellow sign?
29:56That's plenty far enough.
29:57I don't want to go any faster than that.
30:00Well, I do believe that's a tailwind, so that should benefit the sail of a Wingabago.
30:04So let's line them up, sonny.
30:34Three, two, one, go.
30:52Come on, Dave.
30:53Get to the top of first gear.
30:55Yes, there we go.
30:57Yes.
31:05Oh, I thought I had you there.
31:08I looked back and all I saw was billowing smoke as Dave spun the tire.
31:15There you go.
31:18Pump that front end.
31:22Wow.
31:26Did you hear the fork bottom?
31:27Yeah.
31:31Another notch in Dave's belt.
31:33Another victory.
31:33First, a Panigale V4S, and now a 34-year-old Goldwing.
31:38Dave takes no prisoners.
31:42Also, we struggled with different things here.
31:45Dave struggled to put power down, what with the ball and chain and the two extra contact
31:50patches behind there, 500 extra pounds.
31:52Airy, no problem putting power down.
31:55I just struggle with sheer mass and a lack of power to move it.
31:58And some wind resistance, probably.
31:59That's true.
32:01Yeah, we kind of expected it to work out that way.
32:03But it was fun to find out for certain that Dave is still the king of the jungle, as we
32:07all knew.
32:07And now we got to quit dilly-dallying and screwing around and get ourselves the Grand
32:11Canyon, because that is ultimately our destination.
32:14So.
32:14Indeed.
32:16Okay, now that your tires warmed up, you shouldn't have any issues.
32:19Onward to the canyon.
32:28Back at legal speeds, we boogied along Route 66 and enjoyed the sights.
32:34As we climbed toward the lip of the Grand Canyon, temperatures dropped, but our confidence
32:41stayed high.
32:44Things were going so well, in fact, that we decided not to take the boring, well-traveled
32:49route to our campsite.
32:51Instead, we opted for a dirt road shortcut.
32:55It would be the perfect test of overland capability for our motor homes.
33:04All righty.
33:08Snow on the road.
33:10Oh, gosh.
33:11Oh, gosh.
33:12Oh, gosh.
33:12Oh, gosh.
33:13All right, well.
33:14What the hell is this?
33:15It's not so much a dirt road as a snow-covered road, which I was not expecting.
33:20Yeah, well, a snow-covered road on, like, a dirt bike with knobbies is one thing.
33:25A snow-covered road towing a trailer with hypersport tires.
33:29I just saw your trailer come off the ground.
33:32Yep.
33:33It is incredibly cold.
33:36Yep.
33:38Oh, that's a big bump.
33:40Just felt the fork go straight to bottom.
33:45Yeah, careful.
33:46I'm good.
33:47Okay, okay.
33:48F**k.
33:48I don't want to crash.
33:53All right.
33:55I'm not cold anymore.
33:59That is a very large tree across the road.
34:01So it is.
34:03All right, well, progress has been halted.
34:07I mean, I'm willing to try to go around to the left,
34:10but that definitely seems like a sign to me that's like,
34:12hey, you guys probably shouldn't do this.
34:14Like a sign from above, like you're going to freeze to death out here.
34:17Like a sign from our family and loved ones who would like to see us again.
34:22So we try and turn around.
34:24Okay, I'm going to back up, I guess.
34:26I don't know how or what I'm going to do.
34:31Over she goes.
34:31Oh, no.
34:34The large ship has capsized.
34:37I'm going to need some assistance.
34:39I mean, thankfully, it didn't fall over very far.
34:42Like, that's pretty cool.
34:44It's got the crash bars.
34:45It's got the crash bars right on it.
34:46Gently tipped over.
34:47I've never tried to pick up a house and a motorcycle at the same time.
34:50Ready?
34:50Yeah, one, two.
34:52Okay, three.
34:54Thank you, sir.
34:56And that was just a little three inch rut that caught me out.
35:00Yeah.
35:02Didn't damage my house.
35:04Didn't damage my bike or myself.
35:07Do you want me to spot you on the U-turn?
35:09Oh, so awkward, dude.
35:12Okay.
35:27Oh, no.
35:31Fell all the way over that time.
35:33One, two, three.
35:37Upon the tires.
35:39One, two, three.
35:45Careful.
35:46I got it. I got it.
35:47Okay.
35:53We learned that the Wing-A-Bago U-turn is a two-man job.
35:57There you go.
35:59In yet another victory for the Hypersport Touring Pavilion,
36:02I simply unhitched Dave and spun my motorhome around.
36:08A one-man job and much more dignified.
36:16Well, it's been a day of ups and downs.
36:18Typical CTXP.
36:20I would say we're experiencing a down right now in so much as the temperature is down.
36:26And morale is down.
36:29And falling down from the sky is now snow.
36:32Oh, wow.
36:33So, you know.
36:36We're approaching the Grand Canyon.
36:37However, it's getting dark.
36:39There are no RV spots available because people, it's probably a destination.
36:42So we're just going to look for a place to camp
36:44and hopefully make it to the Grand Canyon tomorrow.
36:47So today did not quite pan out as we had hoped.
36:57Temperatures were below freezing and dropping fast.
37:01We needed a fire for warmth
37:04and some food in our bellies if we had any hope of being comfortable overnight.
37:10Fire?
37:11Check.
37:13Food?
37:14Check.
37:17Comfortable?
37:19Well...
37:20Comfortable?
37:22Well...
37:32You okay, man?
37:36It's pretty cozy like this, though.
37:39Harry says he's gonna sleep in there like this now, but I smell leaking fuel.
37:44I think the, I think the Wingo Bago tank is slowly weeping.
37:48I'm so tired.
37:48I know you're tired.
37:50I'm in my underwear out here.
37:51And it's comfortable like this.
37:53Okay.
37:54Should I go back to bed then?
37:58Well, the jack that I peeled off yesterday at Roy's on Route 66
38:04would have come in handy tonight and would have prevented me from falling over.
38:08That was a pretty rude way to be awoken.
38:10But like we have said before, the Wingo Bago is a proof of concept only.
38:15So we now know it needs more outriggers for stability.
38:18Thankfully, I am uninjured.
38:21I did spill tomorrow morning's coffee water, which is pretty upsetting.
38:26Third time it's tumbled down today, and it still seems to be intact.
38:29So we can at least say it's well built.
38:38All right, well, uh, back upright and ready to go to bed again, I guess.
38:42So good night.
38:48That was a record last night for how cold we have camped in, um, eight degrees.
39:10And I am grateful I was not in a tent.
39:12Although I will say my motorcycle motorhome did capsize last night,
39:17which made it a little hard to sleep through the rest of the night.
39:20But yeah, we survived.
39:21We should really make it to the Grand Canyon today,
39:23seriously, because we're about 15 miles away.
39:26So if we don't, something's gone really sideways.
39:29And, uh, I mean, I think the, the Hypersport Camping Pavilion proved its worth once again.
39:35Insulation?
39:37Non-existent.
39:37Two out of 10.
39:38But I was able to, you know, curl up in my sleeping bag in the fetal position and cry myself to sleep.
39:43You weren't worried about falling over, that's for sure.
39:45I did not have concerns about falling over.
39:48And I had even had my little pop-up bathroom in place in case nature called.
39:56So one last ride on the motorcycle motorhomes to the Grand Canyon.
40:00And with any luck, it's early enough that we'll beat the crowds.
40:16This is brutal.
40:28We came all the way from Los Angeles to the Great Open West.
40:31To sit in traffic.
40:32To sit in traffic.
40:33The irony is, uh, almost thick enough to slice up and spread some butter on it.
40:39Fun fact!
40:45The Grand Canyon sees approximately 6 million visitors per year.
40:50And apparently they all came to see it on the same day we did.
40:57How you doing?
40:58Two, please.
41:02To the Grand Canyon seriously this time.
41:04I feel like we're gonna see it any minute, man.
41:11We're like rising up and there's clearly a drop-off over there.
41:14Uh-huh, uh-huh.
41:14Oh, I'm getting glimpses.
41:20Wow, that is grand.
41:23My goodness.
41:24Wow.
41:29Wow.
41:33Wow.
41:38Nice job, dude.
41:41Take a look for yourself, folks.
41:43There's a reason they call it the Grand Canyon.
41:45That sucker is huge.
41:47That's really, that's really something.
41:51You know, it's funny.
41:53I feel like it's easy to take for granted just because we live in the U.S.
41:56And it's like, oh, it's just a big hole in the ground.
41:58It really is special.
42:00I mean, it's incredible.
42:01Yeah.
42:03I'm glad we finally made it.
42:04All right, well, I've had enough.
42:06Yeah, let's go home.
42:09Let's take this guy's camera and sell it for breakfast sandwiches.
42:15We were worried when we left on this trip that our moto homes were a bad idea.
42:19So we decided to go to a place called the Grand Canyon.
42:23It's a place that's been around for a long time.
42:25It's a place where you can rent a motorhome.
42:27And it's a place where you can rent a motorhome.
42:29And it's a place where you can rent a motorhome.
42:31And it's a place where you can rent a motorhome.
42:33Motorhomes were a bad idea.
42:36And after riding them 600 miles across the American Southwest, we knew for sure.
42:45Like real motorhomes, they are slow, heavy, and perhaps a little dangerous.
42:53On the plus side, you really can't put a price on the admiration of European tourists.
42:59So, do motorcycles make for good motorhomes?
43:04No.
43:05No, they do not.
43:08But do bad motorcycles sometimes make for good adventures?
43:17Without a doubt.
