00:00Putrajaya is strengthening its military defense for East Malaysia, with a new naval base in Bintulu, Sarawak, to deal with increasing tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea.
00:14Scheduled to launch in 2030, the base will strengthen the defense of Sarawak and Sabah in the face of a clash of Chinese naval forces in Malaysia's Exclusive Economic Zone off the coast of Sarawak, which has happened repeatedly.
00:28This is part of a report that reports that at least one Chinese coast guard ship enters and operates in the waters of Malaysia every day between January 1 and September 27 this year.
00:40The strategic Bintulu base near Kasawari gas field, which has about 90.61 billion meters of natural gas, will protect this critical resource.
00:52The base in Bintulu will be the fourth naval base in East Malaysia after Labuan, Teluk Sepanggar and Sandakar.
01:00The project is aimed at encouraging Sarawak to increase its military presence in Bintulu, given the increasing importance of the city as a natural and industrial resource.
01:13Sarawak's oil reserves account for about 61% of Malaysia's oil reserves, with about 4.2 billion tons of oil being mined, with Petronas contributing at least RM1.2 trillion to the economy.
01:27In addition, about 90% of Petronas' natural gas cargo originates from Sarawak or through the region.
01:35With oil as a source of financing for state spending, development funds and defense bills, the country needs to prioritize the importance of protecting its oil and gas assets.
