00:00Did you know that over 50 million Americans are foreign-born?
00:04This is over three times the amount of immigrants in the next highest country of Germany.
00:09Since the discovery of the continent by Europeans in 1492,
00:12this land has drawn immigrants from every country on Earth.
00:16Immigrants are what give this country its rich cultural diversity, culinary variety, and multilingualism.
00:23In this list, we will look at the 25 states with the most foreign-born residents,
00:27including both legal and illegal immigrants.
00:30We'll look at what countries they come from and why they are drawn to each specific state.
00:35Number 25 is Utah, which has a foreign-born population of 271,222,
00:41which is 8.6% of its population.
00:44The vast majority come from Mexico, making up 39.9% of the foreign-born population.
00:49This is followed by India, Canada, and El Salvador,
00:53coming in at about 3% of the foreign-born population.
00:56Many are drawn to Utah because of its natural beauty, but mainly because of its Mormon community.
01:01Mormons from around the world look to Utah as a beacon of Mormonism.
01:05Number 24 is Wisconsin, with a foreign-born population of 297,928,
01:11making up 5.1% of its population.
01:14The top country is Mexico, making up 28% of the immigrant population,
01:19followed by India at 8%, China at 5%, Laos at 4%, and the Philippines at 3%.
01:25In addition to this number, another 5% of Wisconsinites have a foreign-born parent.
01:30Wisconsin has a vibrant job market, which is attractive to those wanting to start a new life abroad.
01:35Immigrant spending power in Wisconsin added up to $7.2 billion in 2017 alone.
01:41Number 23 is Tennessee, with a foreign-born population of 348,562,
01:47which is 5.1% of the population.
01:51Immigrants make up 6.7% of Tennessee's labor force and support the local economy in many ways.
01:57Mexico once again makes up the largest percentage of the immigrants at 22%,
02:01but Guatemala takes the number two spot at 8.5%.
02:05This is followed by India, Honduras, and China.
02:08Many immigrants come to Tennessee, more specifically Nashville,
02:11for its job opportunities and cultural diversity.
02:14Despite being far from the southern border, and Central America in general,
02:18there is a thriving Guatemalan community in Nashville, which is evident in its restaurant scene.
02:23Number 22 is Indiana, which seems a little shocking given that it doesn't have any megacities
02:28and isn't exactly known for its diversity,
02:30but they have a foreign-born population of 354,348,
02:35which makes up 5.3% of its population.
02:38About 60% of all undocumented migrants in Indiana have been living in the state for over 10 years.
02:43The top countries of origin for immigrants were Mexico at 30% of all immigrants,
02:47India at 9%, China 7%, Myanmar, and the Philippines at 3%.
02:53While the state may not boast the same diverse immigrant populations as states on the east or west,
02:57it does offer a cheaper cost of living.
02:59Number 21 is Oregon, with a foreign-born population of 432,410,
03:05which makes up 10.3% of its population.
03:08The top countries of origin for immigrants in Oregon are, and don't be too shocked,
03:13Mexico making up 36% of immigrants in the state,
03:16followed by Vietnam at 6%, China and India at 5%, and the Philippines 4%.
03:22Oregon was the first state in the U.S. to declare itself a sanctuary state,
03:25so it's no surprise that many undocumented immigrants may choose to head to the beaver state.
03:30Number 20 is Minnesota, with a foreign-born population of 484,192,
03:35which makes up 8.6% of its population.
03:38While the majority of immigrants hail from Mexico,
03:41they make up only 9.8% of the immigrant population.
03:44Somalia takes the number two spot, making up 7.6%.
03:47In fact, Ilhan Omar is probably one of Minnesota's most famous Somali-born residents.
03:52Omar has been serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District since 2019.
03:58The next three countries of origin, all making up over 5% of all immigrants,
04:03are India, Ethiopia, and Thailand.
04:06Minnesota has a long history of welcoming refugees,
04:09largely due to its robust social service and voluntary resettlement agencies,
04:13even embracing the phrase,
04:15a warmer welcome in a colder state, published in an article in The Economist.
04:19Number 19 is Connecticut, with a foreign-born population of 520,262,
04:25which makes up 14.61% of its population.
04:29This is the first state on this list where Mexico isn't the top country of origin.
04:33In fact, Mexican immigrants make up only 4.3% of the immigrant population,
04:37coming in at number five.
04:40The top spot goes to Jamaica at 8.4%, followed by India at 7.1%.
04:45Taking the third and fourth spots are the Dominican Republic and Poland, respectively.
04:50It should be no surprise why people would choose Connecticut.
04:53Its proximity to both New York City and Boston make it the perfect landing place
04:57for people who want to live in the suburbs while taking advantage of the big city jobs.
05:01Number 18 is Colorado, with a foreign-born population of 539,514,
05:07which makes up 9.5% of its population.
05:10The top countries of origin for immigrants were, like most other states,
05:14Mexico at 40%, India at 5%, China and Vietnam and Canada all with 3%.
05:20Nearly half of all Colorado immigrants have become naturalized U.S. citizens.
05:24Nearly a third of adult immigrants had a college degree or more education as of 2018.
05:29Number 17 is Ohio, with a foreign-born population of 555,583,
05:35which makes up 4.8% of its population.
05:38Like Connecticut, Mexico isn't the top spot here.
05:41India takes that honor with 11% of its immigrant population.
05:45Mexico does come in second, however, followed by China, the Philippines and Somalia.
05:49An interesting statistic about Ohio is that their immigrant population
05:53outpaces Americans when it comes to college.
05:5620% of all foreign-born Ohioans have a bachelor's degree,
05:59compared to 18.7% of U.S.-born Ohioans.
06:03That disparity is even higher when it comes to graduate degrees.
06:0622.3% of foreign-born Ohioans have a graduate degree,
06:10which is twice that of U.S.-born Ohioans.
06:13Number 16 is Nevada, with a foreign-born population of 587,686,
06:19which makes up 19.4% of its population.
06:22The top five countries of origin for immigrants were Mexico, making up 39% of immigrants,
06:27the Philippines at 15%, El Salvador at 4%,
06:30and Cuba and China both making up 3% of all immigrants.
06:34It's no shock that Mexico is number one, given that Nevada used to be part of Mexico,
06:38so the culture is open and welcoming to others who cross the border.
06:42Las Vegas also has an endless stream of construction projects,
06:45which employs a large number of undocumented migrants for these projects.
06:49So it goes without saying that Nevada will draw a crowd.
06:52Number 15 is Michigan, with a foreign-born population of 695,217,
06:58making up 7% of its population.
07:00Mexico takes the top spot, but not by much.
07:03Mexican immigrants make up 12.3% of all immigrants, followed by India at 10.2%.
07:09The next three are Iraq at 7.5%, Canada at 5%, and China at 4.5%.
07:16One of their more famous residents is Rashida Tlaib,
07:19who serves in Congress and is the child of Palestinian immigrants.
07:22She has been a voice for immigrants in her state.
07:25Number 14 is North Carolina, with a foreign-born population of 824,177,
07:31which is 7.9% of its population.
07:33North Carolina has been a hot state to move to for Americans,
07:36so it's no surprise that immigrants will be drawn to its pleasant weather,
07:39breathtaking coastline, and low cost of living.
07:42The countries that make up the top five places of origin are Mexico at 28%,
07:46India at 9%, Honduras at 4%, and China and El Salvador at 3%.
07:52Immigrants comprise 11% of the state's workforce,
07:55so they are a vital part of the North Carolina economy.
07:58Number 13 is Maryland, with a foreign-born population of 915,191,
08:04making up 15.1% of its population.
08:07It's not surprising that immigrants would choose Maryland,
08:09given its proximity to D.C.
08:11In fact, many of Maryland's foreign-born residents work in Washington, D.C.,
08:15in various governmental capacities.
08:17In this state, people of Mexican origin don't even make the top five.
08:21That honor goes to El Salvador with 11%.
08:24Many Salvadorans fled a 12-year civil war and economic instability,
08:28but the country has completely turned around,
08:30so many are considering a return.
08:32After El Salvador, the country with the next highest immigrant population is India with 6%,
08:37China and Nigeria at 5%, and the Philippines comes in at 4%.
08:42Number 12 is Pennsylvania, with a foreign-born population of 922,585,
08:48making up 7.2% of its population.
08:51Pennsylvania has beautiful rolling green fields, the Poconos Mountains,
08:55and two decent-sized cities.
08:57Their immigrant makeup is a bit different than some other states on this list,
09:00with the majority of immigrants from India making up 10%,
09:04followed by the Dominican Republic at 9%,
09:06China, Mexico, and Vietnam round out the top five.
09:09Number 11 comes as no surprise as it sits along our southern border
09:13and was once a part of Mexico,
09:15and that's Arizona, with a foreign-born population of 960,275,
09:20making up 13.4% of its population.
09:23Of those nearly 100,000 people, 55% of them are from Mexico.
09:27Mexican immigrants have an easier transition to a state like Arizona,
09:30where there are entire towns in Arizona with a Latin population as high as 98%.
09:36Coming in next takes us to the northern border with Canada,
09:39making up 4% of the immigrant population.
09:41They should have the opposite motto as Minnesota,
09:44a warm welcome in a scorching hot state.
09:46Number 10 is Georgia, with a foreign-born population of 1,064,073,
09:52making up 10.1% of its population.
09:55The top spot goes to Mexico with 22%,
09:58but the rest of the makeup is slightly more unique.
10:01India, Jamaica, South Korea, and Guatemala round out the list.
10:05Rural Georgia has a low cost of living,
10:08and many agricultural jobs draw migrant workers.
10:11Atlanta is also a thriving city offering more opportunities for immigrants
10:15that want cultural diversity,
10:17or perhaps to find cultural similarities and fewer language barriers.
10:20Number 9 is Virginia, with a foreign-born population of 1,065,076,
10:26which makes up 12.5% of its population.
10:29Like Maryland, its proximity to D.C. does account for some of the foreign-born residents.
10:34The top group immigrating to Virginia are from El Salvador and India,
10:38making up 9.4% and 8.6% respectively.
10:42Mexico, the Philippines, and South Korea round out the next three.
10:46Immigrants in Virginia have a rich culture of entrepreneurship,
10:49with 20.7% of all entrepreneurs in the state being foreign-born.
10:54Number 8 is Washington State, with a foreign-born population of 1,104,850,
11:00making up 14.7% of its population.
11:04Despite being on the West Coast, the demographic makeup is similar to other states on this list.
11:08Mexican-born Washington residents make up 23% of all immigrants.
11:13Washington's status as a sanctuary state has drawn in many immigrants
11:16as they can live without fear of deportation should they have an interaction with law enforcement.
11:21Number 7 is Massachusetts, with a foreign-born population of 1,198,148,
11:28making up 17.4% of the population.
11:31It's no surprise why immigrants would choose Massachusetts.
11:34Boston is the state's largest city and was one of the earliest settlements in the New World.
11:38Its rich history of immigration from the Irish to the Italian to the Chinese
11:42has made it a beacon for those coming from abroad.
11:45Despite having an enormous Chinese population,
11:48many of them are now second-, third-, and fourth-generation Massachusetts.
11:52The Dominican Republic makes up the largest chunk of foreign-born residents at 9.3%.
11:58China comes in second with 8.5%, and Brazil comes in a very close third with 7.4%.
12:04India and Haiti round out this state.
12:07Number 6 is Illinois, with a foreign-born population of 1,791,313,
12:13making up 14.1% of the population.
12:16With a big city like Chicago offering a wealth of cultural and culinary diversity,
12:21it's no wonder that people would choose Illinois when immigrating to the U.S.
12:25The country of origin by far is Mexico,
12:27with 34.5% of all immigrants hailing from our southern neighbor.
12:31The next four countries don't even come close.
12:34The total number of immigrants from India, Poland, the Philippines, and China combined
12:39don't add up to those from Mexico.
12:41Chicago has been in the news a lot lately, since its status as a sanctuary state
12:45has drawn busloads of illegal migrants crossing the southern border.
12:49While it's not always easy to track and count undocumented persons,
12:52eventually they will likely be a shift in the makeup of Illinois' demographics.
12:56Number 5 is New Jersey, with a foreign-born population of 2,033,292,
13:02making up 22.8% of its population.
13:06With its proximity to New York City, legal gambling, and famous coastline,
13:10New Jersey draws many immigrants because of its economic opportunities.
13:14India is the country of origin that makes up the majority of all immigrants at 12.5%.
13:20The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, and the Philippines round out the state.
13:25Number 4 is New York, with a foreign-born population of 4,447,165,
13:32making up 22.8% of its population.
13:35This state needs no introduction.
13:37Home to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island,
13:40the state's biggest city is practically synonymous with immigration.
13:43Of course, there is more to New York than just the city.
13:46Rochester, Buffalo, and Albany also boast immigrant communities.
13:50Like Chicago, New York City has been receiving more and more migrants by the day,
13:54as Texas attempts to share the burden.
13:56But what many people don't realize is that the buses from Texas are nominal
14:00compared to how many people are choosing to come to New York.
14:03The Dominican Republic makes up the largest percent of foreign-born New Yorkers at 11.5%,
14:08followed by China, Jamaica, Mexico, and Ecuador.
14:12Number 3 is Florida, with a foreign-born population of 4,475,431,
14:19making up 21% of its population.
14:22South Florida feels more like Havana, Cuba than the U.S.
14:25Its tropical climate and mere 90-mile distance make Florida the perfect place
14:30for people brave enough to flee and take the perilous journey to Florida.
14:34In terms of countries of origin, that far and away goes to Cuba,
14:38making up 21% of all foreign-born residents.
14:41Haiti, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela round out the state's top immigrant groups,
14:46but those pale in comparison to the Cuban population.
14:49Anyone who visits Florida can't mistake its Cuban scene
14:52boasting some of the best Cuban restaurants in the world.
14:55Number 2 has been in the news in light of the recent migrant crisis,
14:58and that's Texas, with a foreign-born population of 4,928,025,
15:04making up 17.2% of its population.
15:08One in six Texans are foreign-born.
15:11Like Arizona, Texas was once part of Mexico,
15:14so the cultural and linguistic overlap offer no surprise
15:17as to why just over half of all immigrants in Texas come from Mexico.
15:22It's a border state, so if you are crossing in from Mexico,
15:25odds are you'll be in Texas.
15:27The next four countries of origin,
15:29India, El Salvador, Vietnam, and Honduras combined,
15:33don't even come close to the percent of Mexican-born Texans.
15:36And Number 1 takes the cake in both raw numbers and percentage of the population,
15:41and that honor goes to California,
15:44with 10,625,980,
15:48making up a whopping 26.9% of the population.
15:52There aren't a whole lot of surprises when it comes to countries of origin.
15:56Mexico reigns supreme at 37.1%,
15:59followed in a far second by the Philippines, China, India, and Vietnam.
16:04California is a sanctuary jurisdiction,
16:06and this has resulted in a mixed opinion from the American public.
16:10Nonetheless, California prides itself on being both welcoming
16:13and a safe space for people coming to America.
16:16Immigrants make up 32.2% of California's workforce,
16:20and nearly 40% of all STEM workers in California are foreign-born.
16:24Over half of all California immigrants are naturalized U.S. citizens,
16:28so the American Dream is alive and well in the Golden State.
