The Election Commission has announced dates for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections, intensifying the political battle. Analyst Banuchander Nagarajan suggests that offering freebies may not be enough to sway voters in these states. He argues that the Freebie model could falter due to factors like local issues, voter priorities, and the need for long-term solutions over short-term benefits.

00:00On similar lines, Yogesh, main phir se yehi baat rakhna chahunga inse bhi ki Bhanu Chandra Nagarajan se ki
00:08when it comes to issues, we have seen time and again different states, different story obviously
00:14when Delhi votes en masse for Arvind Kejriwal, there are you know several voices which would say
00:21ki dekhe Delhi walon ko toh matlab hi nahi hai, Delhi walon ko toh free ki cheezon ki aadat pad gayi hai.
00:26When similarly in Uttar Pradesh, BJP comes back to power romping on and riding high on the same freebies that is being given
00:35usko masterstroke hum log keh dete hain. Irrespective of the political parties, logon ko kya chahiye?
00:40Janata, what do they need? Is it the freebies that guide the elections? Is it the roads?
00:46Or is it some caste calculus that is at play?
00:49I think formula for electoral success, that will be great, right?
00:56But what we learn from Haryana is that politics is so confounding.
01:01We actually especially analysts and political watchers, it's as if the politics is teasing us to come up with something
01:08and then giving up at the last minute. So I don't think there is a particular formula for that.
01:12Since I already spoke about Maharashtra, I'll speak about Jharkhand.
01:15I travelled in Jharkhand for more than two weeks, the last couple of weeks.
01:18It is a very different election from Maharashtra.
01:22There is a clear anti-governancy against the ruling party, ruling coalition.
01:27Like what the Congress spokesperson, I guess, he was saying about the athiyachar against the tribal chief minister.
01:37That issue is over. It's not there anymore.
01:40I think the performance of the state government has been under question.
01:44The corruption issues against Hemant Sohra is what people are talking about.
01:49And there is also a polarization happening between the OBCs and the tribals there, with the OBCs favouring the BJP.
01:57And with the latest salvo from the chief minister is the Maiya Samman Nidhi program, which is the cash transfer government.
02:05The BJP is countering it with the Bogo Nidhi program, which I think offers almost a similar amount to the women.
02:11And also the infrastructure development, especially in the Santal-Balgana region, if you look at the north-eastern part of Jharkhand,
02:20in fact, the region where the chief minister comes from is a very, very pathetic state and people are complaining about water.
02:27Even the fact that they are less than 100 kilometers away from the Ganga.
02:33In fact, the Ganga flows through Sahilgunj, etc.
02:35The water infrastructure and health and sanitation are absolutely pathetic.
02:40It seems that there are certain parts of our country that are still living in the 1980s and 90s.
02:47Those sort of situations are there.
02:49And also the urban tribals, the tribals that have moved to urban parts of Jharkhand, like Azadipal, Ranchi, Jamshedpur,
02:56these people are actually not voting based on tribal dichotomy.
03:00They are actually looking at how progressive Jharkhand could become and how they can benefit from the economic growth.
03:06So, I think it's a very, very interesting content.
03:09One last point before I give it back to you.
03:11Both in Sardar Baghdana and in the Palanpur region, the Palanpur section of Jharkhand,
03:19the religious polarization from Bangladeshi migrants and the Christian conversion is a very, very big issue.
03:26People are working on the ground on that and we will see the results of that in the elections.
03:31Thank you very much.
