00:00Indias External Affairs Minister S.J. Shankar is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan
00:19on Tuesday, October 15 to attend a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
00:25This marks the first high-level visit from India in years amid the continuous strain
00:29in relation between the two neighbors.
00:33Pakistans main opposition party, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, has called off its protest
00:37on Tuesday as the 23rd meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of the SCO begins
00:43in Islamabad under tight security.
00:47The two-day meeting will discuss ongoing cooperation in the field of economy, trade, environment
00:52and socio-cultural linkages and also the review of the performance of SCO.
00:57For the unaware, Pakistan assumed the rotating chair of the SCO-CHG, the second-highest forum
01:02within the SCO, for 2023-24 at the previous meeting held in Bishkek in October 2023.
01:10Shortly after the visit in Islamabad, J. Shankar will be going to attend a banquet reception
01:15hosted by Pakistans Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to welcome the delegates from the SCO
01:21member nations.
01:22However, both sides have already ruled out any bilateral talk between J. Shankar and
01:27the Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar on the sidelines of the SCO-CHG summit.
01:32It will be for the first time in nine years that Indias foreign minister will be travelling
01:37to Pakistan, even as the ties between the two countries remain frosty over Kashmir issue
01:42and the cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
01:46It is learned that J. Shankar will stay in Pakistan for less than 24 hours.
01:51The threat of unrest was avoided when Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf last night agreed to call off
01:57Islamabad after assurance by the government that a medical team will be allowed to meet
02:02the jailed leader Imran Khan.
02:07Pakistan had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India for the SCO summit in August.
02:11J. Shankars visit is being seen as a significant decision on New Delhis part.
02:16The ties between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after Indias Balakot strike
02:21in February 2019 and the withdrawal of special powers of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019.
02:28Pakistan had downgraded the diplomatic ties with India after the abrogation of Article
02:32370 and 35A.
02:34Similarly, India also lambasted Pakistan on key events.
02:38Yet, India maintains that it desires a normal relation with Pakistan while insisting the
02:43onus is on Islamabad to create an environment free of terror and hostility.
02:50The visit, while focused on just SCO meeting, is being closely monitored for any potential
02:55development in the complex India-Pakistan relationship.
