00:00A cardiac arrest is the ultimate medical emergency, where the heart suddenly stops beating. Across
00:12the East of England, we provide life support to almost 4,000 patients in cardiac arrest
00:17each year. You can help us to increase their chances of survival. Just half of people in
00:23the UK say they would be able to perform CPR, with a third of the population having never
00:28learned. Most cardiac arrests occur at home, meaning that you may need to know CPR to help
00:33a loved one's chances of survival. When we speak about survival, we consider each link
00:39in the chain, beginning with calling 999 for help. One of our call handlers will guide
00:44you through the steps to recognising a cardiac arrest and initiating CPR. We understand that
00:50this might be scary for you, but we will stay with you until help arrives. Stay with the
00:55patient, I'm organising help for you now. Stay on the line, and I'll tell you exactly
01:00what to do next. If high-quality chest compressions are started early, a person's chances of surviving
01:06an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest can double or even quadruple. We may direct you to one
01:13of the 8,000 registered public access defibrillators across our region, which is the next link
01:18in our chain. Public access defibrillators are easy to use and designed to be operated
01:23by someone who hasn't been trained. Responding to your call may be one of our 900 incredible
01:29community first responders, who are trained to support us in providing emergency care
01:33to their community. When our clinicians arrive, they will work as a team to deliver advanced
01:40care. Those basic actions at the time of a collapse will strengthen our treatments and
01:45may lead to a more positive outcome. 30 seconds to the next rhythm check. CPR is easy to learn,
01:52and if you're physically unable, you can still learn how to talk someone through providing CPR.
01:57Survival starts with you. Be the link in the chain of survival.
