No need to ban vape like Maldives, says Health Minister

Malaysia has comprehensive regulations on smoking and tobacco control and does not need to follow other countries in banning vape and its products, says Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

When asked if the country should follow the Maldives, which has banned vape, the Health Minister said Malaysia should instead focus on the implementation and enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852).

00:00Maldives has announced a new directive on 15th of December to stop unpaid personnel.
00:09Is it enough for us to follow this example?
00:13We don't need to follow any country's example.
00:18Although in the early stages of this law, we have taken all the benchmarking
00:25or best practices from all over the world.
00:31But when we have a stand-alone law that regulates or controls
00:40what is called cigarette smoking products and electronic cigarettes and so on,
00:47we have the document and the rules and regulations that we will use
00:58and implement the rules and regulations that I mentioned earlier.
01:04And that will be applied when we implement and enforce the things
01:11that are related to smoking control, both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
01:21So, don't worry. We will implement all of these.
01:26Some of them we will implement immediately after we have clarified.
01:30And some of them will take approximately 6 to 12 months to be implemented.
01:34Whatever it is, we already have all the rules and regulations to implement
01:40the 2024 Cigarette Smoking Control Act.
01:44We don't have to keep looking at others.
01:47Because for guidance, we have already got ours.
01:50A stand-alone or one that is complete and comprehensive
01:56on issues related to smoking control and vaping.
