00:00Today's math lesson is on positional words.
00:05I can describe the position of objects in space.
00:12Do you know what positional words are?
00:15Think about maybe a part of that that you know.
00:17Do you know position?
00:24Positional words tell us where something is located.
00:27So if you look at the picture, the monkey is in different spots.
00:30So when we talk about positional words, that's telling us where something is.
00:37When we use positional, we use positional words when we want to explain where something
00:41is located or when we want to help someone get somewhere.
00:47So maybe you want to tell someone how to get to your house.
00:50You would use positional words like turn left here or my house is behind the Kroger.
00:58You would use positional words to help your friend find your house.
01:03So let's review some positional words.
01:06Where is the ball?
01:08Beside.
01:10The ball is beside the boy.
01:13So what does beside mean?
01:16Well beside means next to.
01:19So I want you to read it again.
01:21Read it with me.
01:22The ball is beside the boy.
01:27Where is the ball?
01:28In front.
01:30The ball is in front of the boy.
01:33Okay, read it with me.
01:35The ball is in front of the boy.
01:40So you might think of who stands in front of you in line.
01:45In front of.
01:48Where is the ball?
01:50Behind.
01:52The ball is behind the boy.
01:55Read it with me.
01:56The ball is behind the boy.
01:59So think of who stands behind you in line.
02:05Where is the ball?
02:07Inside.
02:08The ball is inside the box.
02:12Read it with me.
02:13The ball is inside the box.
02:17So you can barely see the ball because it's inside the box.
02:22Where is the ball?
02:24On.
02:26The ball is on the boy.
02:28Okay, read it with me.
02:31The ball is on the boy.
02:33See how it's touching his head?
02:36When something is on something, it has to actually be touching it.
02:40So the ball is touching his head, which makes it on him.
02:46Where is the ball?
02:48Above.
02:49The ball is above the boy.
02:52Read it with me.
02:54The ball is above the boy.
02:56So see the difference between on and above?
03:00On, it had to be touching him.
03:02Above means it's not touching him.
03:05But if he looks up, it is up above him.
03:09So it is, if he looks up, it's directly above his head, but it's not touching him.
03:16Where is the ball?
03:18Below.
03:19The ball is below the boy.
03:22Read it with me.
03:24The ball is below the boy.
03:27So see how he is above the ball?
03:30So we could use our position words to say where he is,
03:33but we're talking about where the ball is, and the ball is below his feet.
03:37So it's under him.
03:39Under is another word for below.
03:42Where is the ball?
03:44Outside.
03:46The ball is outside the box.
03:49Read it with me.
03:50The ball is outside the box.
03:54So see how it's no longer inside the box?
03:57It is outside the box.
04:01Where is the bird?
04:04Between.
04:05The bird is between the cages.
04:09Read that with me.
04:10The bird is between the cages.
04:14So there is a cage on each side of the bird,
04:17and that's what makes him between.
04:19Another word for between is middle.
04:22So the bird is in the middle of the cages, or between.
04:28Where is the monkey?
04:32The monkey is to the left of the bananas.
04:37To the left.
04:41Where is the monkey?
04:43The monkey is to the right of the bananas.
04:46So you have to think of when you use your hand to write words,
04:50do you use your left hand or your right hand?
04:53And a good way to tell the difference
04:55is if you hold your two hands in front of you, try it,
04:58and you make an L with both hands,
05:01the one that has the L facing the correct way
05:05is your left hand, and the other one is your right hand.
05:11Okay, so now let's check and see
05:15how well you know your positional words.
05:18The ball is the pool.
05:22So how would you describe the ball?
05:24Your choices are outside or inside.
05:27What do you think?
05:31Inside.
05:32The ball is inside the pool.
05:37The boy is the tree.
05:40So where is the boy?
05:42If you were gonna tell your friend where the boy is,
05:45where would you say he is?
05:46Is he in front of the tree or behind the tree?
05:52The boy is behind the tree.
05:58The owls are each other.
06:02Oh, are they beside each other or between?
06:06Hmm, remember the word between
06:09means there's three things or more.
06:12So it can't be between, they are beside each other.
06:15Another word for beside is next to.
06:18So the owls are beside each other.
06:23What is to the left of the house?
06:26So if you're not sure, remember,
06:28hold your hands out and make Ls,
06:30and whichever one makes the L the correct way
06:32is your left.
06:35So which one of these is to the left of the house?
06:38It is the ant.
06:40He is to the left of the house.
06:44The insect is the net.
06:48Oh, where is the bug or the insect?
06:50Is he above the net, behind the net, or under the net?
06:57The insect is above the net.
07:00And you could say that he is next to the cactus, right?
07:06You could also say the bug or the net is under the bug.
07:12All right, let's try this one.
07:13The boy is the tree.
07:16Is he beside the tree or above the tree?
07:21Let's think about that.
07:23He is beside the tree.
07:25The boy is beside the tree.
07:29What is to the right of the house?
07:32Okay, so remember, right is the opposite of left.
07:36So which one is to the right of the house?
07:41That is that little ladybug.
07:43He is to the right of the house.
07:46What shape is above the triangle?
07:50Hmm, what's above mean?
07:52Which shape is above the triangle?
07:56The circle is above the triangle.
08:02All right, now I want you to try
08:04to practice some positional words.
08:06Maybe move some things around in your house
08:08and then tell someone where they are.
