00:00When Sophia first gets out of Arkham rumors are swirling around here comes

00:11this woman who clearly is insane she's the hangman we don't know what that

00:14means my first conversations with Lauren had to do a lot with Sophia's history

00:19and her journey throughout the show it felt right to see her origin so we

00:24understood where she came from Sophia's depicted very very differently in the

00:34comics she really loves her father I wanted to do something different with

00:38Sophia so I thought a lot about Rosemary Kennedy who was the forgotten Kennedy

00:42daughter her father really despised some of the action she took at that time

00:49women were often put away when they were not insane in the comics there's so

00:54many characters that come out of Arkham but all of them are depicted as

00:58psychopaths and I was like what would it be like to be an Arkham but be a sane

01:01person what would happen to you if you were there for ten years who would you

01:07become then what would you find within yourself

01:12Sophia before everything went awry didn't question what her world was she

01:18is involved in all of these different charities and all these different

01:21organizations she's the apple of her father's eye and was really celebrated

01:26he knew that she was the smartest and the most wily he wanted her to really

01:31carry on the family she was probably more prepared than Alberto but I also

01:35think that there's a lot that she's like really really pushed down her father

01:39never wants to talk about anything and no one ever talks about her mother's

01:42passing a young woman named Yolanda Jones committed suicide last week it's

01:47actually been a number of women like miss Jones most of these women worked

01:51for businesses owned by your father and it's Sophia unraveling that truth and

01:56realizing not only that her father has been killing these sex workers but that

02:00he did it to her mother too and Carmine seeing that his daughter knows that

02:07about him is unacceptable and so to punish her he puts her in Arkham State

02:11Hospital Carmine betrays Sophia in such a profound way and it is the thing that

02:24turns her into the hangman she was dealt a very difficult hand because she was

02:30entrapped she was set up this very very dark and compelling history about the

02:35betrayal gave Sophia a really powerful arc she's one of the most complex

02:42female characters that I've seen in a very long time

02:49it's a huge fall for her because she goes from like this princess of the

02:54family to being alone in the solitary confinement treated horrifically and not

03:00visited by anyone like an immediate cutoff from this entire world she's

03:04punished so thoroughly

03:14this changes her forever she never comes back something so much bigger than her

03:19takes over in order to survive

03:23we see what it is to be a young spoiled woman and what she turns into she's

03:37truly becomes her own villain she comes out primed like a real hot wire just a

03:46fuse ready to explode to new beginnings
