00:00:00Take there by Hannes Stradum for South Africa.
00:00:07Well, Canada just bridging the upside line there right at the start of the match.
00:00:14One fancies that there'll be very, very close defensive tactics by Canada today,
00:00:20certainly if they're not getting the amount of ball that they wish.
00:00:25Well, that was an ideal way to start for South Africa.
00:00:28They took the pressure, they took the sting.
00:00:31The kick-in shows, as we saw, a very clean take there by Hannes Stradum
00:00:35as the forwards pile in.
00:00:37Let's see if we can pick up...
00:00:39Well, the referee indicates that the little scrum of John Graff was offside.
00:00:44South Africa have the advantage of the put-in from that penalty kick.
00:00:48Into the middle it goes.
00:00:52There's a knock-on from South Africa, no advantage.
00:00:55That'll be Canada's ball.
00:00:58Let's just have a look how they stand up, the two teams,
00:01:05because South Africa are the heaviest side, as we've mentioned.
00:01:08That's Ruiz's launch.
00:01:10Johnson's done well to get back quickly.
00:01:13That was good defensive work by Johnson,
00:01:15but a thumping tackle there from David Loewy.
00:01:18Well, those are the sort of tactics that South Africa will be wanting to counter Canada with.
00:01:29A very good take by Gavin Johnson there,
00:01:32but one would have hoped that Johan Ruu would have got in a little closer
00:01:35and acted as a buffer and almost acted as a ripper.
00:01:40Pagel, Dalton and Hurter against Evans, Cardinal and Snow.
00:01:49Both teams just feeling each other out.
00:01:55Stockbroker Johan Ruu, always seemingly so relaxed.
00:01:59That's a long throw-in, and South Africa have the advantage of the catch.
00:02:04Christian Schultz going in, and then the Canadians going over the top.
00:02:08Well, there'll be a little message to Al Cheron.
00:02:12Al Cheron's not happy at all, and Dave McKee has done extremely well,
00:02:15because he's actually told both sides, through his actions thus far in the game,
00:02:20that he's not taking any nonsense.
00:02:24Stransky, that's a delightful punt from the fly-half.
00:02:28And John Stransky, if you remember, against Argentina last year,
00:02:32had an outstanding match at this ground,
00:02:34and he'll be looking to put in a good performance.
00:02:37Let's see if we can pick up here.
00:02:38The referee indicates that the Canadian forwards were coming over the top,
00:02:42and at that, Al Cheron had something to say,
00:02:45and was penalised accordingly.
00:02:48Good tactic, this, for South Africa.
00:02:50Hannes Stratum at the back of the line-out, and then Visser takes in the front.
00:02:53Penalised for lifting, though.
00:02:56But the thinking was good from South Africa.
00:02:58They're mixing it up in the line-outs.
00:03:00There's a lack of predictability there,
00:03:02which is what we've seen in the last few games.
00:03:04There's a lack of predictability there,
00:03:06which is possibly just what's needed.
00:03:14That's Visser's kick. It'll drift inside.
00:03:17Back foot to Bay.
00:03:18Now, can he send this back with interest?
00:03:21A huge punt there from him.
00:03:23A great kick, kept in by Graf.
00:03:27That's Scott Stewart.
00:03:29Scott Stewart's been very impressive in Rugby World Cup.
00:03:31He's such a good runner with the ball,
00:03:33kicker, defender, catcher out of the air.
00:03:37Very talented.
00:03:39What a fine kick that was from André Gebert.
00:03:41Off his left foot, he probably had a metre from the touchline.
00:03:44Very, very fine angle, and he's taken play with South Africa
00:03:47with the put-in into the Canadian territory.
00:03:53Dalton, can he find his man?
00:03:55That's straight on, good jump, good throw-in.
00:03:57Good throw-in.
00:04:00Good momentum for South Africa.
00:04:01That's getting the ball going towards the Canadian line.
00:04:09Over-elaboration is what is not needed,
00:04:11but while they can keep that momentum going,
00:04:13that's important.
00:04:14This is Ruus Huist.
00:04:15It hasn't gone deep enough.
00:04:20The kick was a little bit too defensive.
00:04:25Graf.
00:04:27Christian Stewart.
00:04:30It's a little poke through, and this is Gebert.
00:04:34Gebert guilty there of not kicking the ball out
00:04:36because they can have a counter-attack now from Canada.
00:04:40It's a poor kick from the Canadians,
00:04:41but Richter makes a hash of it.
00:04:47Well, that's not a bad torpedo from André Richter either.
00:04:53South Africa certainly should have made more of a meal
00:04:55of that encounter in the Canadian 22.
00:04:58They had great support from their forwards,
00:05:01and Johan Ruus' kick not going far enough
00:05:03to really put the pressure on the Canadian back line.
00:05:07Well, that kick from Richter would have
00:05:08gladdened the hearts of Frick de Prea.
00:05:12To the back it goes.
00:05:13Was that in straight?
00:05:14Stransky straggled.
00:05:19Referee asking for release.
00:05:25Well, a comeback for the Scrum to South Africa.
00:05:28Ball not going in straight at the line-out.
00:05:32It was a good adoption of advantage by Dave McHugh.
00:05:50Solidity in the South African Scrum.
00:05:53Ruus just putting his head in
00:05:55and getting the momentum going.
00:05:57That's a very tiring factor for any defensive side.
00:06:01Stransky's kick this time.
00:06:03David Lougheed was standing quite flat.
00:06:06The bounce was a little unkind to South Africa.
00:06:10Gavin, that Scrum just proving how important it is
00:06:12when you put the ball in to get the lean.
00:06:14And South Africa, as you saw, as they went down,
00:06:17they managed to just get that initial shove on the Canadians.
00:06:21And that resulting in 10 or 15 metres push
00:06:23from the big forward Peck.
00:06:27That's the Canadian bench.
00:06:31Just two backline players amongst the six players.
00:06:41That's big Hannes Stratham.
00:06:45He's done well. That's his third catch in the match.
00:06:48Good clean ball for South Africa.
00:06:54Ruus looking to the hoist this time.
00:06:57David Lougheed. He's dumped on this occasion.
00:06:59And that's Gavin Johnson.
00:07:01But they come back for a knock-on.
00:07:12Well, they pecked in like sardines on that open stand
00:07:15and they rose in unison as Gavin Johnson went through.
00:07:19Well, South Africa will want to keep this pressure on now.
00:07:26Scrum them hard.
00:07:28Keep pushing hard in the rucks and mauls.
00:07:30Try and tire those forwards out.
00:07:32They've been pretty tireless thus far in the competition.
00:07:36And good pressure on Gareth Rees
00:07:38from three of these South Africans.
00:07:42That's going to be an important factor this evening.
00:07:44The pressure that Stransky and from the back of the line-outs
00:07:47able to put pressure on Gareth Rees.
00:07:49And we might see him to start to crack a little bit
00:07:52under enormous pressure from Johan Ruus
00:07:54from the base of the Scrum as well.
00:07:56In the middle of the line-out is Glenn Ellis for Canada.
00:07:59But it's Hannes Stratham again.
00:08:01South Africa have done well in the line-outs.
00:08:03They've been organised.
00:08:04This is Stransky's drop goal.
00:08:06Is that straight?
00:08:08No.
00:08:15Deep kick in on to André Gubert.
00:08:20Gubert just probing down the touchline.
00:08:25So good with those kicks is André Gubert.
00:08:27He has the ability to put the little chip over the top
00:08:31and even more capable with the grubber along the ground.
00:08:39Well, it's Mark Conley.
00:08:42Well, it's Mark Cardinal's turn now for Canada.
00:08:46Looking for Glenn Ellis and Al Chiron.
00:08:53Penalty free kick going against Hannes Stratham.
00:08:59Drive in there by Colin McKenzie.
00:09:01He's a very physical man.
00:09:02He's the eighth man for Canada.
00:09:05Slighter hand there from Christian Stewart.
00:09:09South Africa, Canada not scared to look for the physical encounter.
00:09:14That was a good quick take by the scrum-off John Grob, the coffee merchant.
00:09:23Well, surprise tactics from Canada.
00:09:25Just getting that thing moving well.
00:09:27John Grob, very much in Johan Roo fashion, taking quick kicks.
00:09:32And South Africa will need to guard against the element of surprise.
00:09:38Well, that might be one of the things that Christian Stewart will have shared
00:09:42amongst his teammates to catch the South Africans off guard.
00:09:45So often we see when a penalty is awarded, we turn our backs.
00:09:51Well, Mark Cardinal is guilty there of going over that line.
00:09:54That's him in picture.
00:10:00Stransky calls for his men to go even further back.
00:10:04One point drop from him.
00:10:05Hannes Stratham can't take.
00:10:06Alcheron takes.
00:10:10The Canucks have been impressive and aggressive in these situations
00:10:14in the matches so far.
00:10:19Stransky finds the safety of the touchline.
00:10:22Stransky finds the safety of the touchline.
00:10:33Well, there's no scoreline here at the Budi Rasmus
00:10:35and South Africa have shown a lot of pressure in these opening six minutes of this match.
00:10:44Good clinical play from them on most occasions.
00:10:46Stransky, there's a late charge on him.
00:10:52It's Scott Stewart who's back there and a fine bounce for Scott Stewart.
00:10:58So far, Joel Stransky has chosen the option to kick it deep into Canadian territory
00:11:03but not kicking it close enough to the touchline.
00:11:06And that giving the Canadians a suitable angle to reply on in that instance
00:11:11with a great deal of interest.
00:11:17Robbie Brink at the back of the South African line out
00:11:20but one behind him is Adrian Richter.
00:11:25That's Corbis Visser.
00:11:28In a clear message from the South African camp,
00:11:30we've got to improve our line out count and so they've done it in this match.
00:11:39Well, James Dalton got sandwiched between the Canadians
00:11:42and we were not allowing the ball to be released by the South African hooker.
00:11:51André Dubé's punt is safely into touch.
00:12:00Well, the awarded penalty to South Africa and James Dalton comes around
00:12:06and it looks like big Colin McKenzie just falls over the wrong side of the ball here
00:12:10and very difficult from a player's point of view to keep yourself out of those situations
00:12:14because they sometimes happen not through any fault of your own.
00:12:18Good work from François Pinault in the line out.
00:12:23South Africa need to regroup a little bit quicker than that.
00:12:30A knock on came there from Yohann Roux according to referee Dave McHugh from Ireland.
00:12:41John Groff tells his men to stand up.
00:12:45Certainly position gone South Africa's way.
00:12:48Concern only, there are no points on the board.
00:12:51But is the foundation being laid for a later onslaught on the Canucks?
00:12:57That's to Christian Stewart. Great running by him.
00:13:01A superb play by the Canadians.
00:13:05Now the referee indicating that ball went forward.
00:13:09Psychologically, that'll be a great boost to Christian Stewart.
00:13:12Play against many people that he plays against in the Curry Cup system here in South Africa.
00:13:18And he proved there what an elusive centre he can be.
00:13:23South Africa's close in defence under scrutiny.
00:13:27This time it comes out left footed to Jabair.
00:13:29So useful having a left footer in your side to give you further options.
00:13:33That was not a great kick by him.
00:13:38Certainly not by his own personal standards.
00:13:42The reply from Scott Stewart was safe enough.
00:13:54Al Turan, great servant of Canada.
00:13:59With Glenn Ennis today playing in his third Rugby World Cup.
00:14:06So far the line-outs have belonged to South Africa.
00:14:12Out! Out!
00:14:17South Africa has one man under that proverbial blanket.
00:14:25That is an excellent effort from them.
00:14:27And then the hoist again from Johan who doesn't go where he wants it to.
00:14:31South Africa have got to concentrate on tidying up despite the fact that things are not going that well with those kicks.
00:14:4214 minutes gone then. No scoreline yet at the Budi Rasmus.
00:14:53No opportunities for either side.
00:14:56The half runs wide.
00:15:02That's Steve Gareth-Rees.
00:15:12That's Robbie Brink.
00:15:22Placed for the Western Province in South Africa.
00:15:25Franchois Pienaar in the front.
00:15:27Captain of Transvaal and his country.
00:15:33And a straight him. He's been so impressive in the line-outs in this match.
00:15:43Canadian players being warned by the referee to come in from behind the feet of the last man.
00:15:48That's another launch from Johan Roo.
00:15:55They're not allowed to tackle the man when he's up in the air.
00:15:59South Africa very aggressive on that occasion.
00:16:03Well that was a better kick there by Johan Roo.
00:16:05He got the distance he required and also allowed the ball to come down just that metre outside the 22.
00:16:12And that's preventing the mark.
00:16:14Well, Canada not scared to take South Africa on with the ball in hand.
00:16:18They did that well against Australia.
00:16:23But they're going to have to guard against going to ground too early.
00:16:26Tony, I spoke about it a little bit earlier on and that's something they need to guard against
00:16:32because they are going to ground early.
00:16:34They know the referee's interpretations.
00:16:37He's blown them for the third time and the first chance for Stransky.
00:16:41Well, there's no doubt that the laws favour staying on your feet and we see there
00:16:45as the big Canadian forwards go to ground and far too many of them over eagerly
00:16:50just going over the top, being penalised accordingly.
00:16:59Plenty of local support for South Africa.
00:17:1222 points in Rugby World Cup 95, of course.
00:17:18Kicked well has Joel Stransky.
00:17:21This one, is it going to make it? Yes, he's got it!
00:17:28Joel Stransky certainly hitting that one so sweetly over the crossbar.
00:17:33And as we said earlier, nice to know that in reserve we have a man like Gavin Johnson
00:17:38who certainly has proved his worth as a kicker.
00:17:42Well, Tony, there's some discussion with referee Dave McHugh and Gavin Johnson in picture there
00:17:46and Gavin Johnson seemingly not very happy.
00:17:52One wonders just what his problem is.
00:17:55South African medical doctor, transfer staff.
00:17:59But it looks as if Johnson is going to leave the field and we'll have to see whether or not this is permanent.
00:18:11Just in front of Estes is the man to probably replace the South African wing
00:18:20if in fact he stays off.
00:18:22At the moment Adrian Richter has gone out onto the right wing.
00:18:29Johan Roe finds Pena and then Richter.
00:18:32Interesting option from South Africa there.
00:18:41They chose to run the blind side knowing full well that they didn't have a winger
00:18:46and instead found the big eight man there, Adrian Richter, who put a foot out into touch.
00:18:53Well, it looks fairly clear-cut that Joost van der Westhuizen is then going to replace Gavin Johnson
00:18:59for an injury that we're unsure of at the moment.
00:19:05Very popular man is Joost van der Westhuizen.
00:19:11Joost van der Westhuizen in the past has played on the wing for South Africa when he came on as a replacement.
00:19:17My memory serves me correct against England.
00:19:20Well, he's a wonderful ball player, is the scrum half.
00:19:25Very committed man.
00:19:28Mark Cardinal will try and find some line-out ball for his country.
00:19:35There's been a dearth of it.
00:19:38Cheron in the front, that's better ball.
00:19:40Good pass from Graf and then once Steve Gray comes through, South Africa not tackling in the midfield.
00:19:48Another chance for them. Eddie Evans goes through.
00:19:52He's their most experienced player but he has a real chance for South Africa.
00:19:55That's great running by Roux.
00:19:58Not too many options for him and then the little kick through.
00:20:01Well, I think Johan Roux will be forgiven because he didn't really have a clear pass to any of his men.
00:20:07Well, he had very little other options on hand there and certainly the Canadians in defence just getting amongst the spring boxes.
00:20:14They take a quick throw in here, deep into their own 22.
00:20:19Good thinking by Canada and then the switch from them.
00:20:21Well, they're not shy to try and create some opportunities under their own poles but this is often what comes from it.
00:20:28Can South Africa make something of this? He has a real chance for them.
00:20:32That is a great tackle there on Joel Stransky.
00:20:37One fancies it was David Lougheed.
00:20:40Literally swamped Joel Stransky.
00:20:44David Lougheed as well when we saw them play against Australia last week proved that he's an outstanding tackle.
00:20:51And if I remember he took out David Campisi quite neatly as well.
00:20:57Canada want a short line out and to the back it goes.
00:21:00They're also mixing up their line outs.
00:21:02Well, they'll need to because they've shown no strength in it in this particular match.
00:21:11That's Gareth Weiss.
00:21:21That's David Lougheed.
00:21:26Well, Joel Stransky gets the ball and sees the line and just look at that tackle from David Lougheed.
00:21:31Really outstanding, smothering the ball and the tackler at the same time.
00:21:37Kruvis Visser in the front is the catcher.
00:21:42Almost like clockwork South Africa get the motion of the ball moving forward.
00:21:48That's forward for them of course.
00:21:51Well, South Africa didn't control that ball well and they need to be a little careful, Tony, with over elaboration when they are driving through those malls.
00:22:09Yes, indeed, but I do think the referee needs to keep a closer look on the mall there.
00:22:14The Canadian players and particularly Big Al Sharon are guilty of just collapsing the mall.
00:22:19And we know that the rule says that if you do in fact collapse a moving mall, penalty goes against you.
00:22:27John Graff, Canadian scrum standing steady despite being outweighed.
00:22:34It's all defence for Canada at the moment.
00:22:44That's the Canadian bench once again.
00:22:46Pensive mood of the men there, Ron Toge, Alan Tynan, John Hutchinson.
00:22:54South Africa's success in the line-out will be heartening to the locals.
00:23:03Robbie Brink, that's Hannes Stratum again, catch number six for him.
00:23:11Kruvis Visser always gets so central to those driving malls.
00:23:17Well, Tony, that was what you were talking about and the referee is keeping an eye on it.
00:23:20He blew them up very early in the match for those transgressions and a chance now for Stransky.
00:23:29Well, that was some fine driving play by Kruvis Visser there, but South Africa will need to take a leaf out of the All Blacks book at the moment.
00:23:35And they're cleaning up and mopping up of the people standing around and just getting hands in.
00:23:41Let's see if we can pick it up here as Kruvis Visser goes to ground.
00:23:44The Canadian forwards quite clearly on the wrong side of the ball, but South Africa not taking enough men out quickly.
00:23:53That's the angle that Joel Stransky has.
00:24:05No legs, that's not going to go the distance, although it's straight.
00:24:09Graf looks for Rhys, Canada looking to open up.
00:24:12Winston Stanley, little pass on the inside to Christian Stewart.
00:24:20Well, this was an area of the game against Australia where Canada were impressive.
00:24:24Mark Cardinal with a quick one, almost caught his own players unawares.
00:24:29Ian Gordon driving down the middle.
00:24:32South Africa want to close them down.
00:24:35Rhys finding André Gebert well positioned.
00:24:39That's a lovely punt from André Gebert, what a great kick.
00:24:43Well, a lovely reply from André Gebert there as he sent that kick fully 50 metres down into Canadian territory.
00:24:51And that's the obvious game plan from the Springboks is to play in the opposition 22.
00:24:56The obvious game plan from the Springboks is to play in the opposition 22.
00:25:0224 minutes gone, 3-0 South Africa lead, one solitary Stransky penalty.
00:25:07That's Rod Snow.
00:25:11Big Rod Snow scored the first try of Rugby World Cup 95.
00:25:17We have news that Gavin Johnson who left the field is losing focus in his right eye.
00:25:27He's left the field as a precautionary measure.
00:25:31And those of you that have perhaps tuned in late, although I'm sure there's not too many of you,
00:25:36the Joost van der Versteysen has replaced Gavin Johnson on the right wing.
00:25:43Van der Versteysen of course is a scrum of but a good versatile player.
00:25:49Mistakes being made by Canada as evident from those statistics.
00:25:57Well, Canada have been penalised for collapsing that scrum and it was good impetus from the back
00:26:02because South Africa were keen to get Johan Roo and another party in there
00:26:06just to get them shoving towards the Canadian line.
00:26:10But it's always the team defending that collapses all normally, Tony.
00:26:15Well, normally it is so and we see that South Africa have opted for another scrum.
00:26:19In my opinion, probably the best option.
00:26:21They've proved that their pack is a powerhouse this evening as Johan Roo gets in and lends his support.
00:26:28Well, that's positive for South Africa and they will score.
00:26:31That's a great effort from South Africa.
00:26:35The try has gone to Adrian Richter.
00:26:38Well, that's his third try in Rugby World Cup 95.
00:26:45And that's really perhaps broken the back for South Africa.
00:26:48They really needed to get that try, Tony, and it's been long coming.
00:26:52Well, that'll do the South African forwards a great deal of good.
00:26:55Their mental and psychological approach to this match will obviously change now
00:26:59knowing that they have the upper hand.
00:27:01And even Joost van der Veste comes in, offers his support, but it's not required.
00:27:06Adrian Richter makes the try that much easier.
00:27:13Well, we have the right angle for Stransky's conversion.
00:27:16Will be the easiest kick he's had tonight.
00:27:26That's a bitter strike from Stransky.
00:27:38Well, it's just what a difference a try makes to your scoreline.
00:27:41Ten points South Africa have now, and it came from that terrific shove.
00:27:45South Africa choosing the option of another scrum instead of a penalty.
00:27:49Richter picks up. Bang. Through he goes.
00:28:00Ries' start is bombed to South Africa's side.
00:28:03Rue, that's a huge long punch from Johan Rue.
00:28:07All things are going South Africa's way at the moment.
00:28:12Awful hash up there from David Lohede.
00:28:15Well, is this a chance for South Africa?
00:28:18Scott Stewart kicks it virtually out of Brendan Fenton's hands.
00:28:25There almost seems to be a magnet on that far side there,
00:28:28as every ball kicked there seems to favour the touchline,
00:28:31and that one almost finding the touch that Johan Rue was seeking.
00:28:37Can South Africa exert the same scrum pressure on Canada?
00:28:40There it comes.
00:28:44Pick-up coming from Canada's side. They've recovered well.
00:28:48Good work there by their loose forwards, Gordon McKinnon and McKenzie.
00:28:56Will South Africa have the advantage of this throw-in now?
00:29:00And, well, the referee is a little unhappy with James Dalton, one fancies, Tony.
00:29:06Well, in fact, James Dalton just chose to stand on Gordon McKinnon's hand there purposefully.
00:29:12That's really a lack of discipline from the player who really has changed his ways on the field.
00:29:19We've seen him in the past being responsible for a number of penalties,
00:29:22but he'll be ruining that one.
00:29:26Well, both teams need to remain focused in the event of victory.
00:29:30He has a good chance for South Africa.
00:29:32That ball is just kicked away there by Colin McKenzie,
00:29:36and it was rather silly of James Dalton to throw away the opportunity for South Africa.
00:29:46Robbie Brink, who came storming through from that long throw-in,
00:29:51relishing the opportunity at a tender age to represent his country.
00:29:59A draw for the pick-up, little flick pass, that was rather neat from the scrum half.
00:30:08Very difficult for Canada. Scott Stewart came into the line,
00:30:11but unless you're playing on the other side of the advantage line, it's not easy to bridge that gap.
00:30:21McKenzie holds. Slide pass by Christian Stewart, he's dumped by Brendan Fenter.
00:30:28Now this is Christian Scholz.
00:30:33It pops out on Canada's side.
00:30:35Well, little control there from South Africa, but they're going to come back for a scrum,
00:30:40and it was good play of advantage by referee McHugh.
00:30:43Christian Scholz pounced on that opportunity with both hands,
00:30:47and unlucky not to get in for a try there under the poles,
00:30:50as all they do is see in picture there, and we see a number of the dignitaries
00:30:55and Kitsch Christie himself looking favourably on his team.
00:31:01South Africa have controlled these scrums so well on their own ball.
00:31:05It's always said that their own ball tonight will not be negotiable,
00:31:08and it hasn't been thus far.
00:31:10Dalton.
00:31:15Good play by South Africa.
00:31:16Stransky was possibly looking to drop, and then he comes back inside.
00:31:19That's good running by Joel Stransky.
00:31:23Excellent play by him then.
00:31:24Visser.
00:31:27Almost like a tank.
00:31:28Flibbers Visser.
00:31:29Well, South Africa right on the Canadian line.
00:31:33Canadians penalised for pulling that, or holding on to the ball on the ground.
00:31:42Colin McKenzie possibly the culprit.
00:31:44Once again, South Africa choosing to go the route of the scrum
00:31:48rather than the penalty.
00:31:51Well, they know that they can do it.
00:31:53They've done it already, and they're going to do it again.
00:31:56Colin McKenzie at the back, just doing his best to keep that scrum steady.
00:32:02That's Joel Stransky coming in.
00:32:04Richter.
00:32:05Robbie Brink with a pick-up.
00:32:08Made good ground there to Robbie Brink.
00:32:12Well, the pressure continues.
00:32:16And he's got it.
00:32:17He's got it.
00:32:18He's got it.
00:32:19He's got it.
00:32:20He's got it.
00:32:21He's got it.
00:32:22He's got it.
00:32:23He's got it.
00:32:24He's got it.
00:32:26Well, Robbie Brink certainly having an outstanding game so far tonight.
00:32:30He's getting involved in all facets of the match.
00:32:33It's certainly one to watch for the future in terms of South Africa's international rugby.
00:32:39Eight minutes left in the first half.
00:32:40South Africa lead by 10 points to nil.
00:32:44Can they get this to 15?
00:32:52A little bit of unhappiness in the front row.
00:32:56Both sides maybe just getting a little bit agitated.
00:33:03South Africa will want to keep their cool in such an attacking position.
00:33:09Good shot from him again.
00:33:11Is the momentum going?
00:33:12That's a fantastic shot.
00:33:13That's another try to Adrian Richter.
00:33:18Well, try number four in the Rugby World Cup 95 for Adrian Richter.
00:33:23And what a player he's proving to be.
00:33:26He's certainly making a strong claim for a position in the green side.
00:33:32And when you've got a pack of forwards like that, everyone doing their job,
00:33:37it's very difficult not to score at the back of the scrum, Gavin.
00:33:40Pleasure for Joel Stransky.
00:33:50He's in quite close.
00:33:5415 points without reply.
00:33:56Will it be 17?
00:34:05Up there with a 75 percentage is Joel Stransky.
00:34:09That's a good kick from him.
00:34:15The conversion of both tries of Adrian Richter.
00:34:23And here again we see that outstanding scrum from the South African pack.
00:34:27They get the momentum going and Adrian Richter has little to do but fall on it with the attention of Johan Ruu.
00:34:34Can Gareth Rees marshal those troops of his?
00:34:38Get them back into action?
00:34:4017 points is a big margin to make.
00:34:45South Africa towering above Canada in the lineouts.
00:34:48In fact, all the faces of the game at the moment.
00:35:04Just four minutes left to halftime.
00:35:10Sloppy play from both sides.
00:35:12Referee allows advantage well.
00:35:17Canada will take possession.
00:35:20Good running from David.
00:35:21Low heat on the outside.
00:35:25But South Africa come with a counterattack.
00:35:27Somebody needs to straighten that line.
00:35:29They do it well.
00:35:31Peter Hendricks first touch for him.
00:35:37Once again, good possession for South Africa.
00:35:40Yes, Van der Veer stays in.
00:35:41That's a long haul that for Colin McKenzie.
00:35:47Keeps it in field is Colin McKenzie.
00:35:48Well, the Canadians have certainly tried their luck in keeping the ball available inside their own 22.
00:35:55But South Africa were in offside's position.
00:35:58Well, quite clearly, the Canadians in all sorts of trouble.
00:36:01And to their credit, their forwards managed to get back quickly and add support to that situation.
00:36:07And in the end, South Africa conceding the penalty.
00:36:12There we see the territory statistics.
00:36:14Possession and territory being dominated totally by the Springboks.
00:36:23The scoreline looks a bit better.
00:36:25It goes better with those statistics than it did in the first 10 minutes.
00:36:29Good running by Graf and then running off the ball from Ian Gordon.
00:36:34That's Rod Snow with a pick up.
00:36:39Francois Pienaar comes away with it.
00:36:40Once again, South Africa do well.
00:36:43Peter Hendricks.
00:36:45Well, South Africa perhaps just not finding the right impetus amongst the backs there.
00:36:49And the line may not get straightened early enough because they've come in numbers at the back.
00:36:55Well, they've had some very fine opportunities to run at the opposition of South Africa.
00:36:58But Peter Hendricks just caught here by the cover defence.
00:37:01And he'll be asking his players inside of him, straighten up the back line.
00:37:05Get the ball back.
00:37:06Get the ball back.
00:37:07Get the ball back.
00:37:08Get the ball back.
00:37:09Get the ball back.
00:37:10And he'll be asking his players inside of him, straighten up the back line.
00:37:13Get someone to come through and give me a clear run.
00:37:17Tehran with a jump in the front.
00:37:19Good catch by him.
00:37:24Canada showing South Africa that they're also able to get those balls driving.
00:37:29On the short side is Ian Gordon.
00:37:35Good defensive work by South Africa.
00:37:37Will it be tested on this occasion?
00:37:39Steve Gray.
00:37:40Now to David Lougheed.
00:37:43Also a good tackle from Brendan Pinter.
00:37:46Outstanding tackler is Brendan Pinter.
00:37:55South Africa with a couple of long passes.
00:37:57Well, this could be an opportunity created here as Richter got the legs.
00:38:01He certainly got the nerve and the strength.
00:38:04But that was a great cover tackle.
00:38:10Super cover tackle that from Christian Stewart.
00:38:18Just as we were saying there, give Peter Hendricks an open trial line.
00:38:21Where was he?
00:38:22And big eighth man, Adrian Richter, who's had a busy evening thus far.
00:38:27Caught out there on the left wing.
00:38:35Pleasing strum for Canada.
00:38:37Rims reach the right platform.
00:38:47Canada will certainly be feeling the pinch right now.
00:38:49They came out all fired up.
00:38:52And let's look at that tackle again.
00:38:54Christian Stewart puts in a fine tackle there.
00:38:57There'll be no love lost on this occasion, I'm sure.
00:39:01Four men in the line are clean and quick from Visa.
00:39:03And then the switch to Pinar.
00:39:08South Africa getting over the advantage zone,
00:39:10which is important on that occasion.
00:39:18Well, quick throw in from Canada.
00:39:20Caught almost everybody unaware as is Scott Stewart.
00:39:28A bit of mingling from both teams.
00:39:30One must mention, Tony, lots of pulling and pushing.
00:39:33But it's a needle game out there.
00:39:37Well, there's a great deal at stake.
00:39:38There's a place in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.
00:39:42And it's up for grabs.
00:39:43Well, Canada running from under their own posts.
00:39:46They've decided that they need to throw caution to the wind
00:39:49if they want to challenge South Africa tonight.
00:39:53Graf keeping it in feel.
00:39:54That's a good kick from him.
00:39:56Long kick through from Christian Stewart.
00:39:58Now it's him and Brendan Fenta in this race.
00:40:03Fenta does well. Up he gets.
00:40:04That was good interplay by South Africa.
00:40:06And credit to Joost van der Veste for some wonderful thinking.
00:40:11Well, full credit there to South Africa
00:40:13for recovering what almost looked like a try-scoring opportunity.
00:40:17But the Canadians are willing to take every opportunity,
00:40:20running from deep in their own 22.
00:40:23And well done to them.
00:40:25Well, out of picture, the touch judge on the far side,
00:40:30Steve Lunder from England, has got his flag up
00:40:33and he's having a little word with the referee.
00:40:40That was Brendan Fenta going down
00:40:41and then the clean-up from Joost van der Veste.
00:40:43But prior to that, there seemed to have been some other problem.
00:40:47And we'll hear it from the referee.
00:40:55He's calling over Brendan Fenta.
00:40:58In fact, it's Christian Scholz who'll come across.
00:41:04Well, Canada have a choice now of a line-out,
00:41:08roughly where the opposite where they're standing now,
00:41:11or back to the 22 for a penalty.
00:41:13So they'll take the line-out.
00:41:16And François Pienaar just clarifying the message
00:41:20given to him by the referee,
00:41:22that the line-out is not going to be a penalty.
00:41:24It's not going to be a line-out.
00:41:26It's not going to be a line-out.
00:41:28It's not going to be a line-out.
00:41:30It's not going to be a line-out.
00:41:32The message given to Christian Scholz by the referee.
00:41:43Canada choose four in the line-out.
00:41:46That is their option.
00:41:51South Africa with their big men in as well.
00:41:53It's a good clean-up by Canada, then Graf's pass goes astray.
00:41:58Good pick-up by Steve Gray.
00:42:00there's been good defensive pressure by South Africa other side the advantage
00:42:04line
00:42:07a couple of the big men just go flying into the Canadians Evans with some
00:42:14support by Cardinal
00:42:17Graf often looks for the short side in Gordon and that's Gordon McKinnon good
00:42:24running by Gordon McKinnon he's quite an athlete is Gordon McKinnon
00:42:30McKenzie Graf again can they stretch it wide enough they're not interested in
00:42:35that it's the short side that they want to go
00:42:40so that we're absorbing pressure well from a defensive point of view one of
00:42:44the few occasions that Canada have got in close
00:42:52Graf and then Christian Stewart Stewart can't get his pass out but he's also not
00:42:57brought down by the South Africans
00:43:02Graf back it comes to Rod Snow this is a good period of play for Canada
00:43:10Graf looking again for the short side
00:43:20well an outstanding period of play they're coming from Canada they really
00:43:24threw everything at the spring box and in the end really should have scored a
00:43:29try there they had all the different options opening up to them and at that
00:43:33the ball just being prevented from coming out and subsequently the scrum
00:43:37awarded their way well this is a need to be a show of metal for Canada they run
00:43:43the pressure in the scrum good support play for a scrum are from Ian Gordon
00:43:55pick up and then the run through for Mark Cardinal but they can't take the
00:43:59pass well there was a knock on there but that is the halftime whistle then with
00:44:06Stransky starts that's James Dalton in the thick of things
00:44:12yeah hungry that's a bit of hoist from him he's got more distance with that one
00:44:16Scott Stewart takes beautifully
00:44:27South Africa have been penalized and one fancies Tony that that might have been
00:44:31for a tackle on Scott Stewart in my day well so often today when that up and
00:44:36under does go up and the fullbacks underneath it there is going to be a
00:44:40resultant penalty and that that Scott Stewart is still down on the ground and
00:44:45he received a pretty hard tackle that one let's see if we can pick it up here
00:44:50he goes up well in the air and it's Robbie Brink who just makes a colliding
00:44:54crash with him and the referee penalizes him for doing so those are such dangerous
00:45:02situations Gareth Reese the Canadian captain indicating to the referee that
00:45:09one of the South Africans slung him but I think we saw fairly clearly there that
00:45:13Robbie Brink came through and there was no malice intended but those are the
00:45:18dangers when you go up for those high hoists from the back Gareth Reese was
00:45:23having some very firm words with the referee there and he must remember that
00:45:28it's a game of rugby out there both sides need to take the opportunities
00:45:33accordingly that time Robbie Brink was certainly making no intent to do bodily
00:45:39harm to his opposite man Scott Stewart well if Scott Stewart leaves this field
00:45:44and it looks like he's not going to they've just got the two replacement
00:45:48backs in Ron Toews and Alan Tynan Toews is a wing and center and Tynan
00:45:52reserves Scrum off so they would have been hard-pressed
00:46:00Reese looking for the hoist well that's a brave kick under his own poles back
00:46:06for it Brendan Fenta and then Bissett takes from an offside position there's a
00:46:13lot of niggling and pushing in this game and I think both sides will do well in
00:46:18fact South Africa and Gareth Reese to talk to their men and
00:46:23concentrate on the ball good running by Canada Scott Stewart back in action
00:46:27again well this game possibly at the boiling point right now both sides as
00:46:34you said niggling off to tackle the whistle the blowing all that kind of
00:46:40quick action happening out there on the field but Canada throwing everything
00:46:43they can at the spring box right now they need a score they need to put
00:46:47points on the board and certainly from the lineouts it doesn't seem that they're
00:46:52winning ample possession to be able to do so South Africa's ball in the line
00:46:57outs is not negotiable in fact in all phases of the game they've done so well
00:47:02with it in this match first half they controlled well they got these malls
00:47:08from the line out driving forward and everything they got against against his
00:47:12over elaboration hungry looking to platform South Africa that's a great
00:47:17kick from him quick throw in from David Lougheed
00:47:22Canada in all sorts of trouble that's Winston Stanley
00:47:27well Canada have decided when Fancy's some ten minutes before the end of the
00:47:32first half that they were going to throw caution to the wind it being the
00:47:35only chance of them taking on that South African scoreline well it's a very good
00:47:40closing the gate there by the South African back line Andre to be quickly up
00:47:44there to smother any attempt by Scott Stewart to clear the ball South Africa
00:47:50will be hoping that it's only the goalposts that will get in the way of a
00:47:53nine or ten man scrum is who gonna put his head in good control is this another
00:47:59chance for Adrian Richter pick up by South Africa
00:48:09well that'll be scrum attackers ball which is South Africa
00:48:22I wouldn't like to be in that Canadian front row right now with it so that we
00:48:26can pick operating so well as a unit I'd want to keep that scrum straight
00:48:33Richter Richter is Richter gonna get over no
00:48:46well the referee will know that South Africa are dominating these scrums on
00:48:49the Canadian line and Canada will have to watch here because they don't want to
00:48:54concede a penalty try under the poles
00:48:59well Canada on this occasion that looks like they've taken a heel against the
00:49:03head South Africa little slack on that occasion
00:49:07Canada really looking to keep the ball in play big Tony because even in their
00:49:1122 we've seen a couple of tactical kicks towards some of the other players we
00:49:17said earlier Gareth Reese is obviously set to his players we're here to win at
00:49:21all costs run from every opportunity and in those circumstances unless you
00:49:26have numbers in support you're throwing yourselves into a lot of problems seven
00:49:31great catches in this match behind a straight him in a tower of strength South
00:49:37Africa looking to tap there the ball going a little wide and in Gordon
00:49:43Canada's better forwards today as in Gordon once again the run through on the
00:49:51inside by Steve Gray for Canada
00:50:00South Africa will want to tackle Canada on this side the advantage line and stop
00:50:04the momentum of their runs we'll remember these against Australia a
00:50:07little flip pass on the inside good running by Christian Stewart but it's
00:50:13Corbis Vista that comes away with it
00:50:17once again popping out on the Canadian side but the referee is told Canada on
00:50:23many occasions to not play the ball on the ground well ill-disciplined there
00:50:27from Canada they worked so hard almost up to the springbok halfway line well
00:50:33the field halfway line I should say but with that Andre to Andre Jabeer's
00:50:38attempt at finding touches not done so
00:50:46Oh
00:50:51the messages are very clear from the players but referee McHugh doesn't want
00:50:55any players around while he talks to the two parties one with age on his back one
00:51:01with 18
00:51:04Oh
00:51:13the penalty is going to go against Canada the message will be very clear to
00:51:17Colin McKenzie who started the action just part of his days and is happy with
00:51:23that fact
00:51:26now what is South Africa do now Tony logically they kick for gold and that
00:51:31message is already being given well Gavin should they have elected the
00:51:37scrum it would have been the longest pushover to try I'm sure from almost 20
00:51:41odd meters and let's just pick up here the action between yours from the best
00:51:44days and and Colin McKenzie Colin McKenzie really getting riled up about
00:51:49that little incident and in the end the referee secures both arms firmly around
00:51:54him says we'll have another that
00:52:02that's a lovely record for Charles Stransky up there with a 75 percenters
00:52:07that's where he's got to be a South Africa's premier goal kicker
00:52:1517 no becomes 20 and that the obvious right decision for South Africa to keep
00:52:22chiseling on the scoreboard keep the points rolling and indeed take the wind
00:52:26out of the Canadian sails Gareth he's looking for a quick restart
00:52:34falls gone in fact looks like it's gone over the touchline so they'll come back
00:52:38now South Africa have an option of a short strike well it was good thinking
00:52:41by Peter Hendricks South Africa looks so alive today
00:52:49well in terms of the scrumming they've proved themselves and when it's Canada's
00:52:54put in South Africa have the advantage of their loose forwards able to stand
00:52:57off because they're tight five are holding them considerably
00:53:01Stransky that's a bit of punt from him David Loewy well that's a really fine
00:53:06bounce no heed but too much to room to move in for David Loewy
00:53:16a few opportunities to show his places tonight most of these attempts have been
00:53:21from a defensive position well the condition of David Loewy's shirt tells a
00:53:28story he's been in the thick of things with some outstanding cover defense
00:53:32tackles those results are thanks to that man
00:53:38Corvus Visser and that other man taking the ball from him
00:53:43straighter Pinar drives on
00:53:49quick pass to the outside now he has a chance for South Africa Brendan Fenton's
00:53:53through can they take that for well Andre Joubert might well have been able
00:53:57to leave that ball for Peter Hendricks but took the right option that's the
00:54:03pass at the time it was the right option felt the pass was for him there was a
00:54:08snapping break from Brendan Fenton well that was a beautiful break from Brendan
00:54:12Fenton there just look how he sticks his ears back looks for the long pass there's
00:54:16no one running off his shoulder and let me tell you if anyone was going to make
00:54:19that catch Andre Joubert would have done so he has a fine pair of hands on him
00:54:25Grok and Gareth Reese under all sorts of pressure it's so nice to see Brendan
00:54:32Fenton snapping his way through gaps we haven't seen enough of it in recent
00:54:37seasons so aggressive when he goes and breaks the line
00:54:46South Africa's advantage of the throw-in James Dalton asked for the towel so
00:54:50there's a little bit of dew out there one fancies
00:54:56wonderful jump that from honest straightened but unfortunately he was
00:55:00aided
00:55:08Canada looking to run it this is Eddie Evans who's the most experienced forward
00:55:14on in the Canadian side
00:55:20Peter Hendricks comes away with it straight on to the boot and as if he
00:55:26could have just looked for some support
00:55:38oh that's a quick tap taken by Canada South Africa were caught unawares on
00:55:43that occasion backward to bear it always seems to have so much time
00:55:52lovely footballer Andre Joubert adopting the safety first
00:55:57attitude he wants to play in the Canadian half of the field and really has
00:56:03had an outstanding game this evening is on major beer there's Henny Le Roux on
00:56:08the South African bench in Ennis and Alcheron well that's two in a row lads
00:56:20is the message from Dave McHugh this is not happy with it is on a straight him
00:56:29carbon copy for Canada as Eddie Evans charges in physical encounter coming
00:56:41from Canada really are a tough side
00:56:50well South Africa hindering that ball coming out the referee gave them the
00:56:54option he told him to let it come out once again the quick ball and through
00:57:02the middle comes Scott Stewart South Africa defending really well just watch
00:57:08how well once again they stop Canada other side the advantage line
00:57:14Oh
00:57:20it's again reasonable position for Canada but seemingly no way through the
00:57:25greens
00:57:29well South Africa we're in an offside position and he has the quick take again
00:57:34from John Graff Christian Stewart comes flying through they say that sides can
00:57:41only absorb the defensive pressure for so long but South Africa have done this
00:57:45well you are looking to run through Stransky
00:57:57well graph they almost look guilty of trying to elbow in fact it was Reese who
00:58:02tried to elbows Joel Stransky as he went in for that tackle but the Canadians
00:58:07really throwing everything at South Africa right now and full credit to the
00:58:11South African defense they've stood up to it
00:58:14yeah they can tackle equally as well as the opposition
00:58:19your honorees kicking today after a sluggish start with some of those up and
00:58:26unders he's come into his own
00:58:41tap coming from Canada just a little bit of football from them which works rather
00:58:44well some solid running from once again from Gordon McKinnon well on that
00:58:54occasion some sloppy tackling from the South Africans they Audrey and Rifter
00:58:57couldn't make the tackle and Joel Stransky was left grabbing for a jersey
00:59:04I'll need to make those first-time tackles count that's the man Richter
00:59:11double cross score and Canada come away with it good running from Ian Gordon
00:59:16he's almost up to the line now what is graph do Beckett comes and that's Colin
00:59:22McKenzie South Africa have tackled so well but right up on the line our
00:59:30Canada
00:59:32Cardinals Jersey virtually got pulled off there by a straight Jersey straight
00:59:37hand and then it pops up McKenzie
00:59:46that's McKenzie's face that's John Graff and in the drive-in coming once again
00:59:52South Africa made some telling tackles in the last five minutes
00:59:57can it continue can it continue this time it's James Dalton
01:00:07also that we go blown up for being off sides which is almost inevitable in that
01:00:11type of situation what a Canada do touch kick Eddie Evans again graph on the
01:00:21outside that's David low heat
01:00:27well we've got to give credit to South Africa for some great defense well
01:00:32indeed they've tackled their hearts out on their line there but Canada's ball
01:00:35retention skills are really fantastic they've gone in full eight men and the
01:00:41ball keeps popping back and there's always a man in support so with this
01:00:45kind of pressure they're definitely looking for a try
01:00:47well Canada seemingly will not be able to push South Africa so they choose to
01:00:51pick up quickly there's too many upright men there in the Canadian side I want to
01:00:58get the momentum going
01:01:01my cardinal just showing his blue undershirt and then a swinging punch
01:01:07there from one of the Canadians pass out there to Gareth Reese
01:01:15well Marius Hurt and Eddie Evans are having a swing at each other back they
01:01:21come again do Canada would there not be any wisdom in there maybe trying to find
01:01:26greater gaps further out
01:01:30in Gordon
01:01:35graph long pass out Christian Stewart comes back in field
01:01:46branch off Pino comes flying through this is quite an incredible period of
01:01:52play Rod Snow up to Alcheron my cardinals snow again snow on G and
01:02:00Gordon and they push him over the line
01:02:05well the touch judges flag was up and there's bodies stood all over the place
01:02:12well this is really an exciting period of play there we we're seeing some
01:02:17tackles made from just about every corner of the field here and South
01:02:23African player Joel Stransky just down receiving some attention and he put a
01:02:28fine tackle in on Christian Stewart as he made his attempt at the line just
01:02:32look at Rod Snow there big powerful man young crop got lots of men in support
01:02:37energy-sapping stuff this for a Ford as they drive for the line Gareth Reese in
01:02:42there and in the end it's going to be a line out well Tony this is exactly what
01:02:49South Africa did not want and that was injuries Johnson has already left the
01:02:53field that was Stransky they're involved in a players running and jumping through
01:03:02their one fancies he might have got a kick to the head
01:03:12well the players will be enjoying this moment to take a breather as we see Joel
01:03:17Stransky he's obviously taken a crack there as you can see mark just below the
01:03:21left eye he's indicating that he's in a little bit of distress is Joel Stransky
01:03:28well one of the Canadians are down to and we're not able to pick up who it is
01:03:32can't quite pick up who the Canadian is that's down on the ground and he too is
01:03:43not looking not looking very happy
01:03:47that's John Hutchinson warming up flank forward
01:03:54well Stransky is going to leave the field and there seems to be some wisdom
01:03:58in that Henny LaRue will take his place it might be temporary but one fancies
01:04:04that South Africa don't want to risk any further injuries to their premier fly
01:04:11half and LaRue will probably enjoy the opportunity to stretch his legs
01:04:16well Henny LaRue is an outstanding tackler also at fly half and his
01:04:22tackling ability I'm sure will be welcomed by the Springboks and let's see
01:04:26if we can pick up there Joel Stransky you can see just catches the elbow
01:04:29almost straight on the cheek there goes down like a sack of potatoes
01:04:36well that's a big Glen Innes who was down there in distress and starting a
01:04:42little chat to Gareth Rees he's captain
01:04:46there'll be some concern from Gareth Rees as well that if Glen Innes is not
01:04:50comfortable it would be wise to leave the field
01:04:58well he's a big brave man is Glen Innes survivor of three Rugby World Cups
01:05:11well the courage of the Canadians need not be denied they've shown terrific
01:05:15courage tonight with a minimal supply of ball
01:05:24throw in this close to the line is a two testable hookers abilities to throw with
01:05:30pinpoint accuracy will it go to the front with Visser
01:05:37Visser
01:05:41back to Andre Dubé and that's the benefits of having a left-footer
01:05:48so composed is Andre Dubé well he almost made oodles of time there as he
01:05:55prepared himself for that kick and really James Dalton finding Kubis Visser
01:06:00with ease this evening and that'll be very encouraging Canada jumping in the
01:06:06middle they also mixing it up a little bit in terms of short lineouts pass on
01:06:13to Christian Stewart really been the playmaker for Canada on the few
01:06:17opportunities that they've had in the loose punt downfield with South Africa
01:06:25some sort of distance if not accuracy Bobby Brink
01:06:31Richter running off at pace
01:06:35Pienaar with a pickup that's good play by South Africa they've cleaned up so well
01:06:42La Rue's big up and under once again Scott Stewart goes up for it
01:06:51good play that by Scott Stewart
01:06:56Canada not too much that Winston Stanley could do he certainly had a quiet game
01:07:00today Tony well he has they haven't had much possession to shovel out wide this
01:07:05evening have Canada and have tended to take the ball on with their forwards
01:07:09close to the fringes and so far haven't had much success although they have
01:07:15threatened for the last five odd minutes of the South African try line
01:07:22a greater percentage of territorial advantage in the second half for Canada
01:07:28they haven't really turned that into much and South Africa defended well on the goal
01:07:32line for a period of about five minutes this is the run from Canada David Loweed
01:07:37some good support play by the Canadians they're not giving up Scott Stewart
01:07:46Rhys on the inside to Gordon Gordon's really been the playmaker in respect of
01:07:55running off the ball Crystal Stewart not too much room through there
01:08:00no love lost between him and Brendan Fenta well one fancies that Canada could
01:08:07just have maybe had a look up there was another option for them there was plenty
01:08:10of space behind the Australian South African forwards but they're looking to
01:08:15keep the ball in hand
01:08:19John Groff lovely ballplayers John Groff and then Colin McKenzie now Winston
01:08:29Stanley gets his chance
01:08:33been well shadowed by Peter Hendricks that's Rod Snow
01:08:41ball for Canada and they make something of this Scott Stewart back inside to
01:08:46Christian Stewart
01:08:55enormous amount of talking from the referee
01:09:01well the South Africans are doing well in defense here and Canada really are
01:09:06throwing everything at them but as you said earlier Gavin they tend to go to
01:09:09ground too easily and in terms of a defensive side it's very easy to defend
01:09:13against that you only need one or two men to join that ruck and the rest can
01:09:18fan out and act as blockers for the runoff coming from the Canada Canadian
01:09:22forwards well Colin McKenzie and Francois Pinot in some sort of distress
01:09:30that's John Hutchinson man we saw a little bit earlier primarily a flanker
01:09:36is John Hutchinson he was warming up just now in Glen Innes the lock was not
01:09:44feeling very happy and and fancies that Glen Innes is going to leave the field
01:09:48Pinot is back on his feet so is McKenzie but Innes is going to be
01:09:54replaced by John Hutchinson
01:09:59and that'll be the end of the Rugby World Cup in South Africa for Glen Innes
01:10:11Graf as usual with a good feed to Gareth Vies but South Africa take well
01:10:17that's Kristian Schultz well Peter Hendricks was in front of the kicker on
01:10:22that occasion because without that one fancies with a pace of the man and a
01:10:27kind bounce he would have scored well a hairline decision there right made by
01:10:32the referee there he ruled that Peter Hendricks was ahead of the kicker and
01:10:38just a reminder to ETV viewers that because of the delayed start to this
01:10:42rugby match between South Africa and Canada ETV programs are running about 20
01:10:47minutes late this morning in fact it's Kristian Schultz and in fact I tend to
01:10:53think that the referee made a poor decision there
01:10:57kick from Johan Ruu well taken by David Loheed
01:11:02some surprising passes there
01:11:04seemingly no way through the South African defence
01:11:09it almost seemed that they have a pact amongst them this evening Gavin that
01:11:12Canada are not going to score we've agreed on that
01:11:18that's just about 12 minutes left in South Africa lead to Canada by 20 points
01:11:24to zero
01:11:27straight in marvellous jumping by the Springbok lock tonight
01:11:34once again getting good ball and just a little tick kick over the top
01:11:54Canadian bench
01:11:58well Eddie Evans will know he's been in a match and a game of rugby tonight just
01:12:07not giving up is he as Mark Cardinal finds his line out jumper
01:12:21South Africa just not linting up and getting the push going back the Canadian
01:12:26direction Christian Stewart that was good play by Canada they slipped the
01:12:32passes through on the South Africa
01:12:36Reese's held up and now John Graff
01:12:43scrum-off and despite being a little man charge on the inside by Ian Gordon
01:12:57the Canadians jumping all over the men close to the ball what snow does well to
01:13:03keep it in field the right pick up by the Canadians that was a good period of
01:13:11play for them because they must be getting quite frustrated by the fact
01:13:14that they're not able to bridge the South African defence well some very
01:13:17good play from Canada then the skills of the man pinging up the ball there as we
01:13:21saw that big rod slow making a charge down the left hand touchline really good
01:13:27to see that forwards and backs combining so well what all we see from your Andrew
01:13:32will it be a launch down the line just in fact a little tap kick this is any
01:13:37LaRue not a kind bounce for him the counter-attack coming from John Graff
01:13:43and Ian Gordon he's been very evident as he's slung to the turf
01:13:49L2 on Canadians have numbers on the outside now can they make something of
01:13:54this Christian Stewart looking for the switch and then the dummy pass
01:13:59Jabair on the tackle and that was Winston Stanley well that's unnecessary
01:14:04one feels from Winston Stanley initially
01:14:14there was very little animosity shown by South Africa on that occasion and
01:14:18Winston Stanley has started something which should never have happened
01:14:26South Africa don't need anybody sent off the field right now Tony and the
01:14:31players will just have to try and get them in back front shopping on needs to
01:14:35talk sternly to them all those were ugly scenes from a match that has really been
01:14:39entertaining and produce some lovely rugby and the Canadians certainly not
01:14:44holding their heads it was Scott Stewart has joined that little fracas between
01:14:48Peter Hendricks and David Lahide over there back Winston Stanley we will need
01:14:56to make some very clever decisions here well one hopes that the decision that is
01:15:00taken is is a logical one from the touch judges now talking to the referee he was
01:15:06right on the spot
01:15:13that's honest straight him with the bloody die Tony we'll pick this up from
01:15:22the slow-mo well Peter Hendricks doesn't make any attempt at all to impede Winston
01:15:29Stanley and Winston Stanley takes it upon himself and Scott Stewart joins the
01:15:34fracas and well then it's anyone's guess
01:15:39well that was totally unnecessary and very sad is how to straight him in fact
01:15:43leaves the field
01:15:46you
01:16:03well this is a very sad occasion for both teams here because the referee is
01:16:08sending off James Dalton Gareth Reese and Rod snow one fancies all three of
01:16:14them off the field and this is a tragic set of circumstances because I'm not
01:16:19entirely convinced that those were the guilty parties initially I've got to
01:16:25agree with you Gavin I don't think they were guilty at all and the referee under
01:16:30these circumstances must know that he's made the correct decision well that I'm
01:16:36not entirely convinced of that's James Dalton in picture in the interim it
01:16:42seems like Prado Otto has come on the field as a replacement for honest
01:16:46straight him so what's really looked like a merry March for South Africa is
01:16:51turning into quite a dismal the picture is looking rather dismal that's what's
01:16:57no
01:17:01on would you be searching for the touchline well we've still got eight
01:17:05minutes of this match left seemingly South Africa have it pretty well under
01:17:09their belt that's Gareth Reese
01:17:13Gavin one cannot help but feel sorry for a young James Dalton there he's obviously
01:17:19wanted to be a part of South Africa's further interest in the World Cup and in
01:17:23terms of the laws it doesn't look like he's going to be playing too much more
01:17:27of a role in the South African efforts sad occasion for him
01:17:33well the match continues that's Colin McKenzie it at the back in fact wasn't
01:17:38Colin McKenzie it was replacement John Hutchinson
01:17:45that's Chris was so warming up on the side
01:17:51well the referee certainly must be asking himself do I need a front row
01:17:57hook on we have to have a specialist Ford in the front row and that may be the
01:18:00reason why Chris Rousseau is warming up that'll mean dispatching one of the
01:18:04other South Africans and French off you know we'll need to make that decision
01:18:16that's Paul Leblanc of Canada he's also on the side so
01:18:24interesting to see what South Africa had in fact done in that scrum
01:18:31drop to Christian Stewart Steve Gray comes on the inside the Rugby World Cup
01:18:37to Steve Gray drop to Christian Stewart again assume the fly half role well he
01:18:43has a chance for Canada now can they get that race to that was Peter Hendricks and
01:18:48the ball still in play good recovery work from yours for the Vista's but
01:18:54that'll be a five-meter scrum on fences
01:19:00but it looks like Francois Pinot has assumed the hooking role he's gone into
01:19:15the hooking position for South Africa
01:19:20just a bunch of scrums would have been taken away that's brought the switch
01:19:24past to him looking to come back inside hard work there from Prano Otter
01:19:30replacement for honey straight and what a sad day behind a straight him off it
01:19:34and he performed so well in the lineouts
01:19:44the defensive work by South Africa
01:19:55well Christopher's services the man who's just in picture will probably not
01:20:00be needed
01:20:04I've been on possibly Jordan's Rollin hooker
01:20:09this is Andre Joubert
01:20:16Francois Pinot must certainly be a worried man at this stage knowing that
01:20:20you may well have to face the rest of the World Cup tournament with only one
01:20:24recognized person again Christopher so long throw from Canada
01:20:30Chiron meets the South African players no letting up for Canada they continue
01:20:36to fight for points in this particular match
01:20:41Canada will be short of men in their back line as their captain Gareth Reese
01:20:51was also sent from the field and one just wonders if South Africa won't
01:20:55exploit that opportunity well left in the line out then a Corvus
01:21:02Visser and Prano Otter at lock Richter and Pagel are the other two men
01:21:15well historic match this in respect of the first meeting between the two
01:21:20countries South Africa's first match in Rugby World Cup here at the Budurasma
01:21:25Stadium and sadly has turned into a little bit of a debacle
01:21:32oh
01:21:39well on that occasion perhaps young Ruth choosing the wrong option there he knows
01:21:45that his men outside him have a lot more ability than their Canadian counterparts
01:21:50and should look to use them more well that was good play by Winston Stanley
01:21:54and Canada will want to try and make something of this it took a quick throw
01:21:57in at the line out
01:22:05graph on the outside to the ever-present in Gordon so he had a busy second half
01:22:12as Ian Gordon
01:22:15just two minutes of time left in South Africa lead by 20 points to nil against
01:22:29Canada
01:22:32just a little bit of a hold-up of play one of the Canadians is down on the
01:22:37field
01:22:46the Canadian reserve bench has been sorely tested
01:22:52Chris Michalak is the man just getting warm he was in picture a little bit
01:23:00earlier on that's Colin McKenzie down
01:23:08well he's a big tough man is Colin McKenzie just stormed away and said I'm
01:23:12fine like the rest of the Canadian team they really want to finish this this
01:23:18game here today
01:23:27solid scrum from South Africa LaRue South Africa looking to open up and then
01:23:32Jibbez rubber kick through well picked up by Scott Stewart he's a lovely ball
01:23:39player Scott Stewart
01:23:47well those far better options exercised by the springbok back line they're
01:23:51taking the opportunity to run at their men and really tonight they haven't
01:23:55tested the defense of this Canadian back line and with a man short of fly-off
01:24:00perhaps now the opportunity to do so with a minute or two remaining South
01:24:05Africa will be looking to perhaps put at least one more trial on the board
01:24:10well it looks like Colin McKenzie is going to leave the field and it could
01:24:16well be a knee injury you'll be replaced by number 19 Chris Michalak
01:24:27Canada will be pleased to the fact that they've got so much position but South
01:24:31Africa equally pleased by their defensive exploits they want Chris
01:24:39Michalak on to the Canadian side players in the lineout
01:24:49Francois Pena is the man chosen to throw the ball in in the lineup for South
01:24:55Africa good throw to Pisa and well taken
01:25:00the run around from Henry Leroux too much room through the middle
01:25:06well Francois Pena certainly a captain for all occasions Gavin slotting in at
01:25:11hooker throwing the ball in at the lineouts and it'll be encouraging for
01:25:17South Africa knowing that they have a man of his ability to fill in
01:25:21Drifter picks up well there's space for South Africa on the outside
01:25:31well that's the referees final whistle then South Africa winning this match by
01:25:3720 points to no just the solitary three points scored in the second half
01:25:42Francois Pena will be pleased with the fact Tony that the match is finally won
01:25:47and what a pity about the debacle well absolutely the scoreline the result for
01:25:53South Africa ensures them a semi-final place a quarterfinal place I should say
01:25:58they finished top of pool a but the loss of James Dalton the way in fact this
01:26:03game turned out to be was really not the way that it was intended to it was meant
01:26:07to be the first encounter historical encounter and certainly it will go down
01:26:12in history noted for the three players that were sent off in the latter stages
01:26:17of the second half well the players have always forgotten now as the players
01:26:24prepare to in fact swap jerseys quite a number of them have and this this is
