Masjid India sinkhole investigation in final stages, says FT Minister

Investigation into the August sinkhole incident involving Indian tourist G. Vijayalakhsmi is in its final stages, says Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said the findings of the investigation will be presented to the Cabinet.

00:26First of all, I would like to draw your attention to the use of the term,
00:32which describes a scene hole on the road to Masjid India.
00:36And the term Tanah Jelus or Tanah Mendap, which is often used, is incorrect.
00:40According to the Department of Languages and Literature, the term should be Lubang Benam.
00:45So I myself, Mr Tan Sri Yedipertua, apologize for being confused in using the term.
00:50As for the information of the respected members,
00:52touching on the current safety status and preventive measures to prevent the same incident from happening again,
00:59I would like to say that based on research carried out by the task force or task force led by Dato' Banda Kuala Lumpur itself,
01:09it was found that the road to Masjid India is currently safe for all types of activities.
01:14This is after taking into account the collective expertise of various agencies,
01:19including PDRM, Polis Diraja Malaysia, Jabatan Bomber dan Penyelamat Malaysia,
01:23Jabatan Kerja Raya, Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Malaysia,
01:26as well as professional organizations such as the Institute Jurutera Malaysia IEM
01:31and also the Geotechnical Malaysia MGS organization.
01:35So several immediate actions have been taken.
01:39First, the integrity audit of utility assets carried out by utility companies in the Central Business District or CBD,
01:48including the road to Masjid India,
01:50and the approval and integrity test under the ground were carried out to identify any weaknesses in the old assets.
01:57Second, the use of technology such as ground penetrating radar, GPR and Macintosh probe
02:04were used to investigate the structure of the land.
02:07Geophysics equipment such as microgravity and ground settlement monitoring were also used
02:12to detect any movement of the land or holes under the land.
02:16For long-term actions, the BKL will carry out an in-depth land survey
02:21involving the use of deep boring techniques and practical tests to ensure a stable land structure.
02:27Geotechnical reports by Jurutera Malaysia IEM will be provided for areas that are known to be at risk
02:33and the BKL will also carry out public communication on social media
02:40to provide information and confidence to the public about the level of safety in the area of Masjid India Road.
02:47Next, related to the payment to the family members of the deceased G Bijaya Lakshmi
02:53for the information of the deceased on the basis of concern,
02:56the government through the BKL has donated as much as RM30,000
03:00to help the family members of the deceased in alleviating their burden due to the tragedy.
03:05The family also received RM10,000 from the private sector.
03:10All of this is a social responsibility to help the family members of the deceased
03:16who are traumatized due to the loss of a loved one.
03:19The government does not prevent the government from touching the land.
03:21If the family of the deceased does not meet the requirements,
03:25through an invitation letter to the relevant agency.

03:32not to just see the amount of RM30,000 as the value of the deceased's life.
03:39Of course, the deceased's life is not valued.
03:42In the three incidents,
03:44the Malaysian government has also allocated all the members' power and assets to the incident area
03:50where we involve up to 13 government agencies.
03:53During the nine days of the search,
03:55a large number of documents have also been used for the purpose of cost and daily operations.
