00:00But this is one of the young men who was saved by his experience of attacking Japan in the Philippines during World War II.

00:06He will also tell you how they were saved in the middle of the war.

00:46Here in Kalamazoo, Michigan,

00:49GMA Integrated News introduced one of the young men who was saved when the Japanese attacked the Philippines.

00:59He is the 85-year-old American Dean Hawk,

01:03founder and owner of the Michigan News Agency,

01:06an iconic landmark and bookstore in Michigan State.

01:10Dean was born in the Philippines in 1939 in Baguio.

01:40By the next month, the Philippines were invaded, of course.

01:44That is Bataan and Corregidor.

01:46Dean was brought by his mother and brother to the University of Santo Tomas in Manila

01:52which served as the largest camp or internment camp for the Americans and the Filipino people of Japan at that time.

02:00Dean returned to his father early when his father was killed and became a member of the guerrilla warfare.

02:07The ship was bombed. Actually, the ships weren't marked, so it was bombed by the Americans.

02:12And he is buried in the Pacific Ocean.

02:16Within more than three years of his childhood, Dean learned to establish himself in the field.

02:23This is where he met the other Filipino youth who accompanied him in studying to read with the help of his mother.

02:32Dean also learned to work with other Filipino youth.

02:37When the US General Douglas MacArthur's force returned to the Philippines,

02:42Dean was looking for hope that they would be saved from the field in the UST.

02:48But it was sounded by the Japanese forces and they were lined up to be shot.

02:54But before the Japanese forces could start their plan to wipe out the people in the field,

03:00the American soldiers arrived with the help of the Filipino guerrillas.

03:06The reason that I am alive is because the Filipinos helped the Americans liberate us

03:13and they got to us an hour before we were actually going to be shot down by the Japanese.

03:18We were lined up for that.

03:19And the American tanks got there earlier than thought because the Filipinos helped them.

03:27And that is why I'm still alive.

03:31And from escaping to the Philippines and coming here to America, Dean did not return to the Philippines

03:36because he said it was too painful for him.

03:38But according to Dean, the love of the Filipinos will continue to live on in his heart.
