00:00G'day, I'm Paul. So it's time for another car expert drag parison. If you don't know what a drag parison is
00:05It's where we do a comparison at a drag strip
00:07Done a whole bunch of these before and they are so much fun to produce. Now
00:10This one is a little bit different because yes, we're not at a drag strip and also they're not really comparable cars
00:15They're kind of from the same mother but have different fathers. So it is the Toyota GR Yaris
00:21Which is brand new one of the most anticipated car launches of this year plus the Toyota GR Supra
00:27So the one that they did in collaboration with BMW and by the way, that's my car
00:31You can see because of the stupid number plate and the different wheels today. We're going to compare these two
00:35It's not gonna be a direct comparison, but we just wanted to see now that Toyota has a complete GR family gazoo racing
00:42Let's see what they've done and how these cars go
00:44So today we'll do some 0 to 100
00:46Testings an exhaust comparison and also a drag race between the two to see just how quick the all-new GR Yaris is
00:53Now if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this drag parison
00:56You can use the time codes up on the screen there or if you're on YouTube just scroll down and use the chapters below
01:01And if you haven't done so already make sure you hit subscribe and press the bell icon
01:05That's going to tell you every single time we check out a sibling rivalry
01:09Okay, let's start over here. This is the GR Yaris engine. I know it's not overly exciting
01:14But here's some news that is the most powerful
01:173-cylinder production engine in the world
01:19So that means it pumps out 200 kilowatts of power and 370 Newton meters of torque
01:25It's a 1.6 liter engine and that's impressive because this weighs barely anything
01:29It's just under 1300 kilograms six-speed manual only so no automatic transmission and all-wheel drive only as well
01:35So no front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, but it can vary the torque split as it drives
01:39So it is a fairly complex setup. So I'll be keen to see how this goes when we put it up against our stopwatch
01:43So let's go over to the Supra
01:46Okay, look at that that may look familiar to you BMW people because it is BMW's B58 engine
01:54It is a 3-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine fits nicely under that bonnet
02:00In fact so nicely I reckon they'll be able to fit the m3 engine under there at some point and I'm looking forward to that when
02:06That happens this one on the other hand produces
02:08250 kilowatts of power and 500 Newton meters of torque and unlike the Yaris
02:12This is only available with an 8-speed automatic transmission and it's also just rear-wheel drive with an electronic
02:19Locking rear differential and in terms of weight this weighs just under 1500 kilos
02:23So it is slightly heavier than the Yaris, but it doesn't have a complex all-wheel drive system weighing it down
02:29Okay, let's talk design and we'll kick off with the Yaris. Now. This isn't just a normal Yaris
02:34Let me quickly explain why this one is so special
02:36So this started off life as a normal Yaris
02:39But they needed a homologation car for the rally series and to do that
02:43You have to produce 25,000 of them and it needs to resemble the rally car in some way
02:48And if you've seen the Yaris that definitely doesn't so they came up with this which sits on its own platform, which is crazy
02:54So the front end is regular Yaris
02:55The rest of it though is shared between the C-HR and the Corolla and it has a whole number of other differences that I'll walk
03:01You through in just a second, but have a look at this front end
03:03That is a massive massive mouth and that is to get in as much air as you can into that
03:09Super powerful three-cylinder engine and if we jump around to the side actually before we do that
03:14You can see all these vents are kind of blocked off
03:16I have a feeling that down the track we might see a more powerful version of this
03:19So they might pop those open and kind of like the Supra
03:22Where they'd come out and you can actually put things on tuners are gonna have a field day with that sort of stuff
03:27Jump around to the side here. Now. This is the impressive part about the brakes. They are whoppers
03:32356 millimeter rotors, they're slotted and they also have four piston calipers. You've got an 18 inch alloy wheel
03:37That looks really cool as well. There is a
03:40Performance slash track version of this car called the rally e that is coming to Australia
03:44That's gonna have lightweight wheels different brake calipers a front and rear locking diff and a few other sort of bits and pieces that are extra
03:49This is just the standard car GR badge there
03:52So you can tell this Yaris aside from others have a look at the roof
03:55If I bet you never thought you'd see Yaris with a carbon fiber roof
03:58This helps save around three and a half kilograms. The roofline also sits 95 millimeters lower than a standard Yaris
04:04So you can see the dimensions just look completely different and it actually shows over here. Look at these wheel arches
04:10They are huge haunches. They just pop out nicely and then in terms of the dimensional differences between this and a standard Yaris
04:16It's 55 millimeters longer than a standard Yaris 60 millimeters wider and 45 millimeters lower
04:22So moving on to the Supra, I think most of you know the platform here is shared with the BMW Z4
04:28But what a lot of people don't know and you can actually watch the video
04:31We recorded on my car and why I bought and all that sort of stuff up there
04:34But a lot of people don't know that Toyota was actually involved from the inception of this platform
04:39So they've had a lot to do with the engineering work
04:41Yes, it uses a BMW engine and some interior parts, but there is a Toyota engineer at heart in there somewhere
04:48So in terms of the design, you've got all your standard air vents
04:50You've got a big gaping one in there to keep it cool and then air vents off to the side
04:53But it is worth noting that there are some fake vents on this car
04:57But as we've seen with the aftermarket a lot of aftermarket tuners have gone and bumped those air vents out
05:02And there is space in there to create additional cooling as well. So they have thought about that in the long run
05:07We'll jump around here to the side and have a look at the wheels. So these are aftermarket wheels
05:11They aren't the standard wheels, but the tire size is the same. So 255 millimeters at the front
05:16275 millimeters at the rear and this is a 19 inch alloy wheel and then in terms of braking you have a
05:22348 mil rotor up front with a four piston caliper
05:25There's one of those fake vents that I mentioned now come around to the rear
05:28Now this is my favorite angle around the rear because you can see those massively wide wheel arches there that contain those
05:34275 mil wide tires and then these cool led taillights plus the bimodal exhausts
05:40Okay, so it is time to hear some exhaust sound now
05:43Both of these cars have been warmed up and we're going to do this stationary and moving as well
05:48Scott you're in the car fire it up pop it into sport mode and let's have a listen
05:52Let's go
05:59It's actually pretty quiet, okay, so first stop when you get a GR Yaris is going to be an exhaust
06:04Let's see what it sounds like once it's moving
06:14Okay, what about the Supra it's got three more cylinders let's have a listen fire it up scott
06:20Now this is in sport mode give it a rev
06:27That sounds awesome i've never actually sat behind my car and listened to it. Okay. Let's see what it sounds like once it's moving
06:43Okay, so we are inside bay my supra
06:47Um, this is what we're going to start our drag parison with i'm going to do zero to 100 in this first
06:52It is slightly uphill here
06:54So I guess that is just something to keep in mind
06:57This time is probably going to be a little bit slower than the official claim
06:59But it should give you an idea of how we go
07:01So first time around i'm just going to use sport mode with stability control kept on
07:05now when I did this just before when I was practicing I left a
07:09Big old set of skid marks on the road here. So, um, yeah, i'm gonna have to be a little sensitive with this
07:14But yeah sport mode first stability control on let's set a baseline time for zero to 100
07:18So all i'm going to do is just load it up a little bit
07:21And then just slam the throttle down
07:31There's a hundred
07:324.6 seconds. Okay. So the official figure is 4.3 seconds
07:37So we're just a little bit off that time, but I suspect there is still a little bit more in it
07:42Okay, let's give this another try so this time i'll try it with launch control it is incredibly temperamental
07:46So you press the stability control button once it puts it into a traction mode
07:51and then what you're meant to do is
07:53Foot hard on the brake foot on the throttle down to the kickdown and then it comes up saying launch control active
07:58It lets you just have a little bit of wheel slip as you get along
08:01So i'm going to try and activate that now if I can't activate it. I'll just let it go with just limited stability on
08:07Okay, there's launch control active
08:12Oh
08:15This is going to be slow
08:194.9 seconds. Yeah, you see what I mean? It just it let the wheels slip too much
08:24It's not a very good launch control program. Okay, let's try that again. Uh this time i'll try and be a little more aggressive with it
08:30Here we go
08:32There it is. That's better
08:34Still holding
08:36It's still torque limiting me there
08:38That's really annoying 5.1 seconds, yeah, it was just torque limiting me off the line
08:42It was just I could feel full throttle. It just wasn't giving me everything
08:46So i'm going to try this once more without launch control and we'll just see if we can get the final good time out of it
08:52Does sound good though just as i'm returning here
08:56Giving a little squeeze a bit of a crack and a pop on the overrun
09:01Yeah, I still really like this car
09:03Okay, so like I said, um, no launch control this time i'll just try walk it off the line
09:08It'll probably have a little bit of wheel slip, but i've got it in that limited traction mode. Let's see. How we go
09:19Felt okay
09:23It's still not amazing though 4.7 seconds
09:26Yeah, so look a little bit off the time I was hoping for but it is a little bit uphill
09:30Maybe that's got something to do with it. But yeah, it's just notoriously hard to launch
09:34There's so much torque there and it either just gives you everything or nothing
09:38You sort of never really get in anything in between that lets you sort of get off the line nice and clean
09:42Okay, so we are inside the GR Yaris now the official 0 to 100 time is 5.2 seconds
09:49I want to see how close I can get to that
09:51But there is a caveat that I want to point out really quickly. This isn't actually a press car
09:55This is a customer's car. It's from the legends at tuners edge
09:59Now these guys are tuning up the Yaris GR and they have one of the first customer cars in australia
10:03They've very nicely loaned us this and by the way
10:06If you want to see this on the dyno plus some of the work they're going to be doing to it
10:09Click up here to watch that video
10:11So i'm not going to go too hard with this
10:13But I will reveal the times that the owners have actually achieved after sort of fairly brutally launching it
10:18So let's give this a shot first start
10:20We're going to put it into sport mode
10:21But leave stability control on for our first run now
10:24The owner of this car has told me that he launches it from some astronomical rpm, but I genuinely don't want to break the car
10:30So let's just see how we go. I'll try from around sort of 3000 with a slight clutch slip. Here we go
10:44God that is quick
10:47Oh
10:50That is seriously impressive I enjoyed that
10:53Wow, okay 5.4 seconds that is straight out of the box just in sport mode
10:58All right, let's try that again this time around sport mode stability control off
11:02So it's a push of that button
11:03It comes up with all the messages now i'm going to raise the rpm here a little bit because it did bog down out there
11:08At the start so I think it actually has a little bit more latitude there before it slips
11:12Let's go up to about 4000
11:15Kind of holds it there, which is good let the clutch out a little bit
11:20Oh, it feels better
11:26Far out this is this thing is quick
11:30Okay, 5.4 seconds again. Okay this time around it is track mode
11:35I'm going to keep stability control up but dial up the revs a little bit more and we'll see if we can just get a touch
11:41More out of it. Um, okay. Here we go
11:43So i'll have it up just over 4000 rpm
11:52That felt good
11:58Okay
12:00All right, 5.7 seconds. That one was even slower. So it looks like sport mode is actually the mode that you want to go for
12:06Okay, it is time for
12:08The sibling rivalry the grudge match it is the supra up against the yaris both gr cars
12:14Obviously the supra is going to win, but i'm just curious to see how close it is
12:17I think this will have it off the line, but we'll see how close they are down the line
12:21Eagle is going to start us off. So let's give this a crack
12:24three
12:25two
12:26one
12:32I got off the line a little early. Oh, he's catching me. Come on. Let's go
12:39140 150 there goes the supra 160
12:43Just over the line
12:45I'll tell you what this car is
12:47Colossally quick
12:49All right. Let's see how we went. So zero to 100 in 5.4
12:53So that was a really good launch and then we'll have a look at our quarter mile time
12:5813.5 seconds at 169 kilometers an hour
13:02Seriously quick. Uh, let's see how scott went scott. How did you go?
13:0612.8 for the quarter mile at 180.4 k's an hour. Okay, that is quick. I'm proud of it
13:13It's quick the guy that owns this
13:16He's actually done his own testing before they started doing tuning
13:19He's a drag racer
13:20So he knows how to properly launch it and he's more willing to be a little more aggressive with the car
13:24But he has managed a sub five second zero to 100 kilometer an hour time. Oh, that is impressive stuff
13:32So this is normally the point where we would do the brake test between the two cars, but look it's not my car
13:37I don't want to take the piss. Uh, they've loaned us this car, which we're really grateful for and
13:42I don't think i'd want to watch a video where some bloke was just smashing the brake pedal on my car
13:46We might just wait till we get an official press car from toyota
13:48And I think i'll feel probably a little bit better then but I know that it's not someone's actual car
13:52So that is another car expert drag parison done whenever we finish these
13:56I always have a big smile on my face and that's always a good thing because cars are so much fun, especially these two
14:01Still absolutely love that that has blown me away. I was not expecting them to be close at all
14:06They're completely different cars
14:08They're completely different price brackets
14:09But the smile that thing puts on your face and how much it keeps up with that off the line even down the quarter mile
14:15There's not that much of a difference. So let me know in the comment section below were you surprised with the results?
14:20Did you think one would be faster than the other?
14:22Yes in the hands of a professional and someone that kind of wants to be a little more abusive to their car
14:27That thing will go sub five seconds zero to 100, which I think is pretty awesome
14:30So let me know in the comment section below. Have you bought a supra or a gr yaris if you have?
14:34Let me know what you think of it so far. Have you done anything fun with it?
14:37What kind of mods have you done to it, especially to these?
14:39I think they're about to get some absolute power out of these once the tuners get hold of them and big
14:44Thank you to tuners edge as well for letting us loan that car
14:46Now if you haven't done so already, I would love it
14:47If you could share this video hit the like button and don't forget to subscribe and press the bell icon
14:52Because that'll tell you every single time we do a smile inducing drag parison, but until next time take it easy
