Blinken reaffirms US commitment to Asean amid deepening geopolitical conflicts

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed Washington's commitment to supporting Asean centrality during the Asean-US Summit on Friday (Oct 11).   He said China continued to harm vessels from Asean nations in disputed waters in the South China Sea but the US will continue to support the freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific. 00:59DPRK's destabilizing behavior, to Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, which continues

01:04to violate principles at the heart of the United Nations Charter and at the heart of

01:08ASEAN's Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

01:11We remain concerned about China's increasingly dangerous and unlawful actions in the South

01:14and East China Seas, which have injured people and harmed vessels from ASEAN nations, and

01:19contradict commitments to peaceful resolution of disputes.

01:22The United States will continue to support freedom of navigation and freedom of overflight

01:27in the Indo-Pacific.

01:28We also believe it's important to maintain our shared commitment to protect stability

01:33across the Taiwan Strait.

01:36But whether it's responding to urgent global challenges, or advancing the shared hopes

01:40of our people, the relationship between the United States and ASEAN will continue to be

01:44essential.
