00:00It appears in studies that not only our environment and oceans are being affected by plastic waste,
00:06but also our bodies.
00:09But according to the Department of Science and Technology,
00:12plastic may still be out of our circulation.
00:16Here's Benji Durango's report.
00:20If you are a consumer of products from various stores,
00:24you are part of the shale economy.
00:25Single-use plastic is still abundant in the Philippines.
00:28According to Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey,
00:32plastic waste collected in the country is at 2.7 million metric tons per year.
00:37This is equivalent to 7,397.26 tons of plastic collected in the country every day,
00:44and the country is considered to be the third largest in the world.
00:46But not only in the area where plastic pollution ends,
00:49because it can go back to our food that we don't know about.
00:53In a study conducted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque,
00:56they found 100 cadavers of plastic waste in the brain.
01:00As a result of their autopsy,
01:024,800 micrograms per gram, or 0.5% of the human brain's weight,
01:09was found in blood, liver, and stones.
01:12For DOST Secretary Renato Solidum,
01:15can plastic be removed from circulation?
01:17We cannot just say that we can eradicate it soon.
01:20There are possibly the use of certain,
01:23or plastic for certain purposes can be replaced by other materials.
01:28So to address the problem,
01:30the agency is partnering with a large company
01:32to somehow solve the big problem.
01:35Today, DOST and SM Investments Corporation
01:39launched a memorandum
01:41for Sustainable Plastic Materials and Plastic Waste Management Strategies.
01:46This is the Tactics for Better Plastic.
01:49We are looking at how do we reduce the amount of plastics we use in packaging.
01:53You know, we also encourage customers to bring their own bags
01:56so that they're not using plastic bags.
01:58And some of our retail affiliates, like Watson's for example,
02:01you know, they have a program where you can go and refill
02:04so you're not using new plastics.
02:06Solidum is happy with these projects
02:09because the opportunity to build this
02:11can be imitated by other industry players and communities.
02:14Circular economy, which would include the use,
02:17the recycling and the repurposing of plastic,
02:21is one of the eight big-ticket R&D projects that we have.
02:25And so we will really pay particular attention
02:27on circular economy proposals
02:29because it is not only saving the planet
02:32but also providing additional livelihood for many people.
02:36At the same time,
02:38the Exhibit of New Innovations in Plastic Management and Recycling
02:44that will not only help the environment but also the well-being of the people.
02:48Benji Durango for Pambalsang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
