00:00This is a really exciting time for Sheffield, new homes are being built, regeneration is in full swing and now we're turning our attention to improving the buses.
00:12Buses are vital for thousands of people across the city to get to work, to access education, to see loved ones, to see their friends and family.
00:22But I know that our buses are currently not good enough.
00:26For too long private bus companies have been able to put profit before passengers.
00:32Our deregulated bus system means that communities have little say and no control.
00:38But there is a way to turn this around and this week we've taken a big step forward to bring our buses back under public control in Sheffield and right across South Yorkshire.
00:50On October the 23rd a public consultation is being launched about whether to move to a franchise model for our buses.
00:58This would bring regulation of bus routes, frequencies, fares and tickets under local public control.
01:06Improving public transport is about social justice.
01:10Unreliable and infrequent buses rob people of opportunities.
01:15I'm hugely optimistic for our city.
01:18Creating a better bus network in the coming years is a key part of our plan to give people more opportunities.
01:25Keep an eye out for the consultation and please have your say.
01:29Whether you currently use buses or not, we really want to hear from you.
