Gael & Diego talk about their lifelong friendship, the oldest memory they have of each other, being very competitive, 23 years since Y Tu Mamá También, their new Hulu boxing series “La Máquina,” and Jimmy surprises them with an old clip of the two of them fighting each other, and Diego wearing a prosthetic butt.

00:00Our next guests are friends, too, real-life ones
00:02since they were children.
00:04And now they are co-stars in a new series about boxing.
00:07La Machina premieres next Wednesday on Hulu.
00:09Please welcome Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.
00:13I'm excited to have you guys here together,
00:37because rarely do we have people on the show who've
00:40known each other since how long have
00:42you guys known each other?
00:43Oof, like 15 years, no?
00:46No.
00:47Since we were born, basically.
00:48Since you were born.
00:49Yeah.
00:50Your families were friends.
00:51Well, no, no, I came a year later, you know?
00:53Uh-huh, OK.
00:54He came here to check it out, get everything ready for me
00:57to come.
00:58He was waiting at the hospital.
01:00He wanted to receive me, everything.
01:03He didn't let me.
01:05Back in those days, he was very the man.
01:07Yeah, they were very tight back then, you know?
01:09They didn't let one-year-olds deliver babies.
01:13Like, what's the earliest memory, though,
01:14you have of being together?
01:18It's strange, because it's a kind of constructed memory,
01:20no?
01:21It's definitely one.
01:22Our parents used to tell that we went to the hospital,
01:25you know, to receive Diego, who was a very beautiful baby.
01:28Mm-hmm.
01:29And the, and when we talk about this,
01:34like, the memories start to fall in, you know?
01:35And I start to remember reaching out and with my finger
01:39going into his mouth like this.
01:42And, yeah, and magic happened.
01:44I don't know.
01:45Yeah.
01:47Magic happened, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:48And then you were, you play together?
01:51Were you, like, competitive with each other as kids?
01:54But always, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:55Always, yeah.
01:56Always.
01:57We liked basketball.
01:58Mm-hmm.
01:59Oh, OK.
01:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:00Who's better?
02:01What do you mean?
02:02Obviously, myself.
02:03Like, we decided to quit, you know?
02:08No, it was, I had, like, a tiny basketball kind of, like,
02:12court in my house, you know?
02:14But you remember those, like, tiny ones?
02:16Like, an office.
02:17Yeah, Nerf one, right?
02:18Yeah, exactly.
02:19But we took it very seriously.
02:20Oh, sure.
02:21Like, we kept the scores for a year and everything.
02:23It was a real tournament happening, you know?
02:26And then was E2 Mama and Tom
02:27Bien the first movie you did together?
02:29Yes.
02:30Yes.
02:31That was, how many years ago?
02:3220-something years ago?
02:3325.
02:3425 almost, yeah.
02:35Have you guys, have you ever watched that?
02:36Have you gone back and looked at it
02:38and watched yourself as kids together?
02:41Yes, yes, yes, yes.
02:42I mean, I hide it from my kids, you know?
02:45Right, yeah.
02:46Uh-huh.
02:47They're not old enough to watch it.
02:48But yeah, I have watched it.
02:50And, uh.
02:51Why are Daddy and Uncle in a threesome together?
02:54That's a, yeah, that would be confusing.
02:58Let me explain.
03:00Cinema back then.
03:03It's not the first time Dad has had his finger in your mouth.
03:06And, boy, it's really a little crazy.
03:11You both grew up to become successful, famous actors.
03:14It is, I mean, the odds of that happening to one person
03:18are pretty long.
03:19What happened to the two of you, it's really amazing.
03:23And now you're doing this series.
03:25That's true.
03:26And that we stay friends, you know?
03:27And that you stay.
03:28And we're not acting here, pretending we like each other
03:31just because it's good for our careers.
03:33This is a real relationship that you have.
03:36And you wouldn't be working together
03:37if you weren't friends either.
03:39Well, no.
03:41Well, I mean, they pay, no, when you work.
03:43Yeah, I know, but who's like.
03:46It wouldn't be here, because you don't actually pay, but.
03:49No, no, very little.
03:50Very, very little, yes.
03:52Who is, whose idea was it to do this boxing show together?
03:56It happened in the snow, in Berlin,
03:58at the Berlin Film Festival.
04:00We were walking, very hangover, or drunk.
04:02Drunk.
04:03And a kind of a mix of, you know, like in that moment
04:06that you're like, well, I don't know.
04:07And so we were going out for a kebab,
04:10and we were a bit frustrated.
04:12A kebab?
04:13Yeah, that's what you do in, no, in Berlin.
04:15Yeah, uh-huh.
04:15In the middle of the night, snow.
04:17I mean, you are, we released the film.
04:20We had a premiere that night, and it
04:22didn't go like fantastically.
04:24Oh, it didn't.
04:25Clearly, I mean, we ended up having kebabs in this.
04:27Yeah, right, right.
04:28So it wasn't like, it played well,
04:30but we were like, let's do something else, because.
04:33So we talked about, yeah, let's do something about boxing.
04:35Let's do something.
04:36We always loved boxing.
04:37So three, a few elements came about that night.
04:40So it was the boxing.
04:41It was obvious who was going to play the boxer, come on.
04:44Was it obvious?
04:45It was very obvious.
04:46Yes, it was very obvious.
04:47Because this is not the first time
04:49that you guys have been in a boxing-themed production.
04:54As young men, in fact, I believe on it,
04:56there's a television show on which
04:58you boxed one another, correct?
05:01Do you remember this?
05:03If not, luckily, I'll be able to.
05:05Oh, no.
05:06What is this?
05:07Oh!
05:08Oh!
05:08Oh!
05:09Oh!
05:10Oh!
05:11Oh!
05:11Oh!
05:12Oh!
05:13Oh!
05:14Oh!
05:15Oh!
05:15Oh!
05:16Oh!
05:17Oh!
05:18Oh!
05:19Oh!
05:19It looks like you may have been in a different weight class
05:21back then.
05:22Yeah.
05:23That was incredible.
05:25Oh, my god.
05:26Jimmy, that's really, we've never seen that, no?
05:28We're very surprised.
05:29I have to say something.
05:31Yes, go ahead.
05:33That's not me.
05:34It's a guy that looked like me.
05:39He looked like you, huh?
05:40I already had people looking like me in the business,
05:43like going like, oh, I should look like that guy.
05:45But that's not actually me.
05:47In fact, it's Gael getting ready for his role.
05:49Exactly.
05:50Did you guys box each other when you were kids like that?
05:53Was that something you would do for sport?
05:55For very little time, because it hurts.
05:57It hurts.
05:58Yeah.
05:59That's why we are actors.
06:00You wake up.
06:00Yeah, we felt it for real once.
06:02And it was like, oh, no, let's call it a tie.
06:05Let's stick to the acting, yeah.
06:07Exactly.
06:08La Machina is the machine.
06:09Yes.
06:10Yes.
06:11And that is a fighter's name, the nickname.
06:13That is the boxer's name, yeah.
06:14Boxer's nickname, no?
06:15Yeah.
06:16And Diego plays my manager in the show.
06:19And those things were agreed right there.
06:22But one thing that I think when I got Diego's attention,
06:25when I was pitching him this frustration of let's
06:27do something about boxing, let's do something, this and that,
06:30it was when I told him that maybe it would be
06:32good to have some prosthetics and maybe something
06:35and maybe a big butt, no?
06:38And that's when he was interested in boxing.
06:42I play a manager that is not really
06:44happy with the way he looks and decides
06:45to start doing little things here and there, you know?
06:49Till he gets a gigantic ass.
06:51Oh.
06:52Oh.
06:52Oh.
06:54I mean, I have to say.
06:56It's the pitch.
06:57It's the pitch of the show.
06:58That's a moment where we got the attention of the people.
07:01You know?
07:02People with money were like, OK, let's talk about the project.
07:05You know?
07:06And you're like, yeah, and in it, I will have a gigantic ass.
07:08And that's when he sold it.
07:09And you know what?
07:10It feels great.
07:11It feels great.
07:13I wore it for like six months of production.
07:15It was fantastic.
07:16Really?
07:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:18What's it made out of, your gigantic ass?
07:20It's, well, it's like a strong pillow.
07:22But very, I mean, it's nice to touch.
07:24Uh-huh.
07:25Yeah.
07:26It's comfortable.
07:27It's comfortable.
07:28Did you poke it at all?
07:29Yeah, I ran into it.
07:30A little bit?
07:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:32Yeah.
07:33Well, it's, well, it's.
07:35You what?
07:36Yes, yeah.
07:37I think, oh, come on.
07:38We have to talk about these things here.
07:40Finally.
07:41Finally.
07:41Well, for those who are interested in seeing
07:44a television show about boxing and a gigantic ass,
07:47it's called La Machina.
07:49It premieres a week from today on Hulu.
07:51Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, everybody.
07:54Thank you, fellas.
07:55We'll be back with Ben Platt and Brandon Clark.
