Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Wednesday (Oct 9) encouraged all delivery and logistics companies to leverage technology such as electric vehicles (EV) and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.

He emphasised that AI was unlikely to replace human labour but would instead change the scope and nature of jobs.

00:00I would like to officially announce the results of our conference today.
00:04Please, Mr. President.
00:09200 e-bikes and 143 e-vans have been operated in Senanjong, Malaysia.
00:15Moose Malaysia has received another 1,112 e-bikes
00:20in groups since October this year
00:24and 347 e-vans since January next year.
00:30All these lorries and e-vans have been installed with a telematic system.
00:3516 Post Malaysia locations have been installed with photovoltaic solar panels.
00:42It is enough to supply energy to 2.5 to 3 million homes for a day.
00:49And, Moose Malaysia also has 15 solar panels that are fully operational so far.
00:56There are 6 e-vehicle inspection stations that have been installed.
01:02And, I have been informed that although we usually think of Post Malaysia as a letter carrier,
01:11but Post Malaysia itself has reduced the use of paper by 28%.
01:17I have also taken the responsibility.
01:20So, my speech is no longer printed on paper.
01:27Moose Malaysia has also issued a Post Hijab Carbon Release Report
01:33which was first issued by Protistik Malaysia
01:37which was scheduled to be launched in December this year.
01:41This is a help to companies to systematically increase their carbon footprint
01:46and increase their scope of investment.
01:49So, for our colleagues at MCMC, I see that for Post Malaysia,
01:54they have given a commitment that has never been given before
01:58to ensure that in terms of operation,
02:01they follow the principles in the Sustainable Development Goals.
02:07What about the others?
02:10So, I would like to ask MCMC to be more careful.
02:13Maybe we have to call other Korean companies.
02:17Ask them what their commitment is.
02:19If Post Malaysia can show a commitment without considering the cost,
02:27but looking far ahead,
02:29I think it is reasonable for other logistics companies to participate or be given.
02:37I don't think it is an incentive, but maybe an accusation.
02:42It is not fair that Post Malaysia is doing all of this,
02:45and the others don't care.
02:48So, I hope that we take Post Malaysia as an example.
02:52A company that is doing its best to deliver services,
02:58but they care about the future of the country.
03:02Why do you emphasise on the use of AI in services?
03:06And why do you comment on how the job security will be improved?
03:10I believe that what can be done is to improve the use of energy,
03:18to make the work done more efficient,
03:24and at the same time, to improve the service level.
03:28So, I don't see the need to fire employees by using AI,
03:34but the workforce can be adapted to new jobs,
03:40such as data analysis.
03:42And AI can only do a few things,
03:46it cannot replace human labor.
03:49And we see that at the moment,
03:54AI can be applied in the management of companies,
04:00including logistics.
04:04And we don't expect that jobs will be lost,
04:09but maybe the scope of jobs will change.
