00:00The National Artificial Intelligence Office, NAIO, was launched on Thursday, aimed at shaping
00:08policies and addressing regulatory issues, as it looks to establish itself as a regional
00:14hub for AI development.
00:17Malaysia has secured billions of dollars in investment in the past year from global tech
00:21firms seeking to build critical infrastructure to cater to growing demand for their cloud
00:26and AI services.
00:56In Bahasa, 120 billion ringgit to the country's GDP by 2030.
01:04But all estimates sometimes are quite flawed, because once you review in the next two years,
01:13you may even quadruple the amount.
01:16So among the crowning achievements is the entry of global tech giants.
01:23Some you have heard.
01:25They have set up their R&D centres in Malaysia.
01:30And of course I take this opportunity to thank and express my appreciation to them, their
01:36governments for support, the embassies, they have taken the trouble to give them the additional
01:41confidence.
01:44The NAIO is expected to serve as a centralised agency for AI, providing strategic planning,
01:50research and development, as well as regulatory oversight, among others.
01:55It will pursue seven deliverables in its first year, including developing a code of ethics,
02:01an AI regulatory framework, and a five-year AI technology action plan until 2030.
02:07And ultimately it really comes back to us building trust.
02:12People need to know that the government is on top of it.
02:16They are on top of things.
02:17They understand the benefits that technology brings, the risks that flow along at the same
02:24time, and how it is we as government need to balance it so that we can benefit from
02:33technology without sacrificing humanity.
02:38But there's a lot of work to do moving ahead.
02:41So ladies and gentlemen, let us today start this journey.
02:47Let us accept the fact that AI will change everything.
02:50Technology will change everything.
02:51Let us accept the fact that we are prepared to do what it takes so that we can lead in
02:55this area as well.
02:57Let us look at the National AI Office as being that office that will facilitate this, ensure
03:03that we develop, and we develop fast, on the right path moving ahead.
03:10So Malaysia, let us together rise.
03:14The future is now.
03:17The government on Thursday also announced strategic partnerships with six companies,
03:21including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, which have all announced data center, cloud and
03:26AI projects in Malaysia in the past year.
