The DVSA has issued an urgent warning to UK drivers after parking fine scam texts have targeted motorists. So, have you recently received a text message that read: ‘DVSA Notice For You: You have a parking penalty charge due…if you do not pay your fine on time, your car may be banned from driving…’ Well, this is a scam. One way to notice that this is indeed a scam is the fact that the DVSA, as the UK’s road safety and education body, do not deal with fines.

00:00So there are actually two types of car parking scams that we've been closely monitoring in
00:05recent weeks. The first being the text message scam, whereby individuals are being sent a
00:10text message stating that they've received a parking charge notice and that they have
00:1428 days to pay before legal action will be taken. The link then takes them to a fake
00:19page to make payment, which looks obviously very legitimate. The second is a fake QR code
00:25scam. So it's QR codes that are being stuck over legitimate ones on the signs next to the car
00:30parking meters. So drivers are prompted to scan them to make payment and will be redirected to
00:36sort of a convincing, again, convincing looking payment page. It's impossible to ascertain whether
00:41the link you'll be redirected to is legitimate. Just by looking at the QR code, you wouldn't be
00:46able to do it. And much of the time, busy people will literally scan, pay and go in good faith.
00:51So we believe the reason for the surge in these types of scams is opportunity.
