00:00The Malaparte Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the Italian literary panorama,
00:21was celebrated on the first weekend of October in the subsequent Cornice di Capri by Rachael
00:26Cusk, British author and essayist, known for her innovative approach to narrative and
00:31essay.
00:32The award, reached at the 27th edition, born on the initiative of Graziella Lonardi-Bontempo
00:40and Alberto Moravia, found a new life thanks to the determination of Gabriella Bontempo,
00:45who, taking up a family tradition, thanks also to the support of Ferrarelli and the
00:49Benefit Society, restored to the island of Capri the historical identity of Polo della
00:54Cultura.
00:55I practically grew up with this award, at the beginning when it was organized by Graziella,
01:01who was the promoter together with Moravia, Graziella, my aunt, Graziella Lonardi-Bontempo,
01:08together with Alberto Moravia and Capri and all the other friends involved, I was the little
01:13mascot.
01:14I grew up with the award, then I had a forced stop when Graziella, unfortunately, was not
01:20very well, then the same Moravia was missing, so those things that stop for a moment, then
01:27thanks to an energy found mine and also of the presence of the Ponte Corvo family, of
01:34the Ferrarelli Benefit Society and of many other friends involved who supported us in
01:42this idea, first of all the presence of Capri, which unfortunately left us some time ago,
01:49and we came back on stage, thanks also to the same city of Capri.
01:57For 13 years with Gabriella Bontempo, Ferrarelli and the Benefit Society have decided to support it,
02:02precisely because our purpose as a territory company is to preserve our territory,
02:09helping and restoring value in the form of culture, of support for art, so this is
02:15the reason why for many years, with great conviction, we continue to support the Malaparte
02:20Award and other activities of culture, art, beauty and environment for our regional territory.
02:27This year we have reached the Casco, a European award, and it is certainly a moment for Europe
02:32not very simple and therefore also an opportunity to create a small stage and it is important
02:37the visibility that the press and the media give us, because thanks to this we can bring out
02:43these positive ideas from Capri and hope to leave not only on the island but in all public opinion
02:48in the culture of the country a small sign.
02:51The event attracted a large audience made up of literature lovers, critics and writers,
02:56all united by the desire to honor an innovative and profound voice in the world of contemporary
03:01narrative, with which they faced each other in a public debate.
03:05When this name came out, we were, let's say, aware of the bravery of the writer,
03:15because everything is there, that is, there must never be something artificial created to give a prize,
03:22it must be something that really likes beyond any use that you want to make.
03:28And in the splendid setting of the Certosa di San Giacomo di Capri, awarding the English author,
03:38the jury wanted to celebrate her entire journey, started in 1993, which today consists of nine novels,
03:45three collections of essays and a play, in which the English writer explores themes of identity,
03:50the experience of motherhood, relationships and the search for truth.
03:55Sometimes it may seem that it is almost at the bottom of literature, let's say,
04:01to write and deal with such brutal themes of life in writing, and it can be difficult at times,
04:08but receiving the award makes me feel that it was the right thing to do.
